Interesting theory, also while we're on the topic of Maul's new saber, why is the ring part of the blade pointing up? shouldn't it be pointing down if the ring was broken? this has been bugging me for quite a bit and I still don't get it.

I always wondered that too. Like, MAYBE it was damaged in such a way that he had to move the piece that had the broken ring attached to it to the top of the saber so it would work? Aside from it looking menacing, it looks hilariously impractical, unless Maul plans to use it to stab somebody without the ligthsaber blade.
