- Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Singing Legend Peggy Lee’s Granddaughter, Holly Foster Wells
About Harvey's guest:
One of the most popular features of our show is our “Gone But Not Forgotten” series, celebrating the careers and legacies of the greatest stars who are no longer with us.
Today’s guest, Holly Foster Wells, is descended from show business royalty. She’s the granddaughter of one of the most popular and beloved music artists of all time: the fabulous Peggy Lee, whose contributions to the world of popular music and jazz were monumental.
Over her 7-decade career, she recorded over 1100 songs and released over 50 albums, with over a hundred top 100 hit singles, including “Somebody Else is Taking My Place”, “Why Don’t You Do Right”, “Golden Earings”, “Riders in the Sky”, “Is That All There Is”, “Lover”, and of course, everybody’s favourite, “Fever”, for which SHE came up with that distinctive arrangement, AND she wrote new lyrics.
As a matter of fact, Peggy Lee was an extraordinary songwriter, who wrote or co-wrote over 270 songs, including her hits “Little Fool”, “What More Can a Woman Do”, “I Don’t Know Enough About You”, “It’s a Good Day”, and “Manana”. For the Disney movie “Lady and the Tramp”, she co-wrote ALL of the original songs, and she supplied the singing and speaking voices of 4 characters. She also wrote songs for many other movies, including “Anatomy of a Murder”, “The Jazz Singer”, “The Rawhide Years”, “Johnny Guitar”, “Tom Thumb”, “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter”, “The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming”, “Walk, Don’t Run”, and many more. She appeared in 10 movies including “Stage Door Canteen”, “The Powers Girl”, “Jazz Ball”, “Mr. Music”, “The Jazz Singer”, and my personal favourite, “Pete Kelly’s Blues”, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and the Audience Award for Most Promising Female Personality of 1955.
Ms Lee received 13 Grammy Award nominations including 1 win, plus a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. She was the first female recipient of 2 awards from the Songwriters Guild of America: the Aggie Award, for her composing skills, and the President’s Award, for her support of young, emerging songwriters. In 1990 she won the ASCAP Pied Piper Award, and 2 years later she was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. She received 2 honorary doctorates, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2020 the ASCAP Foundation established the Annual Peggy Lee Songwriter Award.
Peggy Lee was a creative powerhouse, who directed her life and career on her own terms. But for her millions of fans, it’s all about her quietly captivating voice, that continues to resonate with audiences of all ages.

Can you possibly imagine the joy in my heart every time I get to interview the children or grandchildren of the greatest stars? Holly Foster Wells is Peggy Lee’s granddaughter, and CEO of Ms Lee’s substantial estate operations and publishing company. Once you’ve seen this interview, I think you’ll agree that she’s the perfect person to carry on Ms Lee’s legacy. We should all be so lucky to have a descendant like Holly. I absolutely adore her!!
What an honest down to earth woman. Liked her a lot..great work of love she is doing for her grandmother...my mom born in North Dakota and loved to play her records while I was a little one!
Thank you so much for watching our show, and for posting your comment. I appreciate you so much. ❤️
Harvey, I was completely absorbed in this interview about the sensational Miss Peggy Lee!! Holly Foster Wells is the perfect person to carry on the legacy!
Thank you so much for writing this lovely comment. I agree that Holly is an exemplary heir to manage Ms. Lee’s affairs.
Another winner Harvey! Peggy was one of a kind. What a wonderful interview. What an magnificent opening tribute. You certainly have the incredible knack to make all of your guests feel so comfortable. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your appreciation of my introductions, which have become renowned as part of my “signature” interviewing style!
Read her autobiography. I could relate the the chores. I grew up also on a ND farm and certainly know what cleaning the separator is. I drew the line at cleaning a chicken. And my hands couldn't get the knack of milking. She did it all. Hope Mim is burning somewhere
@meggy8868 yes the book was certainly very revealing. Peggy had a tough life in many ways. Thank you so much for watching our show
Ms Foster Wells has class. A pleasure to view this video. Great job with the interview on both your parts. Thank You.
Yes Holly is a real class act. I absolutely adore her. Thank you so much for watching our show. I hope you’ll check out more of our great interviews and consider subscribing to our UA-cam channel. 🙏❤️
Plus she seems like a genuinely nice person who told interesting stories.
She’s absolutely adorable
What an enjoyable interview and what a lovely and admirable lady Ms. Wells is. She looks a great deal like her legendary grandmother. I always loved Peggy Lee and Judy Garland's duets on THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW from 1963.
Funny you should mention that. After we finished filming, I told Holly that my favorite TV appearance of her grandmother was her appearance on Judy’s TV show.
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 Oh how neat and I am so glad to know that. AND I think somewhere there is a Peggy Lee museum, of sorts. Not sure if Ms. Wells is involved with it or not.
She certainly is. The Museum is at a train depot in her home town. Very small. Nowhere near sufficient to honor a legend.
Harvey, your interviews are so good!
Oh thank you so much!! I put my heart and soul into every interview, so your positive feedback means the world to me. 🙏❤️❤️❤️
Great interview, thanks so much! Miss Peggy Lee was part of my childhood. I especially remember the song about a gypsy with fire in his shoes. I also remember seeing her on TV in some kind of salute to Duke Ellington (other female artists were Sarah Vaughan, Aretha Franklin and Roberta Flack). You got some excellent news - a film, documentary and coffee table book. They surely are worth waiting for.
Thank you so much for watching this very special episode of our show 🙏❤️
As a fellow North Dakotan born in her hometown of Jamestown ND & steeped in her history, I urge everyone to visit The Peggy Lee Museum in Wimbledon ND, which was her home during her high school years. A must-see collection of memorabilia, costumes, pictures, gowns & history of her formative years.
I attended her concert in 1988 in Toronto and was amazed at her stage presence & rapport with her audience.
I’m so happy you enjoyed this very special episode of our show
Great interview Harvey. I had heard an interview and playing of various Peggy Lee songs on Seriously Sinatra Sirius channel a few times. She was interviewed by Charles Pignone and I was just fascinated by her life and her songs. Thanks for the interview and learning more about Peggy.
My bad. Holly was interviewed by Charles on the channel. It was great and worth the listen if you haven't heard it.
Thank you so much for watching this very enjoyable episode of our show. Holly and I bonded immediately, and I absolutely adore her!❤️
Wow wow Holly brava
I’m so glad you enjoyed this interview.
what a wonderful interview!
Thank you so much!!!
My favourites are Folks Who Live On The Hill and the marvellous Is That All There Is? I had no idea she was a songwriter too! I will visit her website and investigate further!!
It’s heartwarming to know that our interviews inspire our viewers to learn more about our legendary (and even the not so legendary) guests. Thank you so much for watching!
Holly strongly resembles her grandmother, a great thing!
Yes exactly!!
the more she talks the more she embodies her grandmother in spirit and tone of voice. Beautiful interview
That’s such a lovely thing to say. Thank you so much!🙏❤️
Such a fantastic interview with heart and soul. Excellent questions that put Holly complete at ease and allowed her to open up and share some new insights and information. I’m a Peggy Lee super fan and this was truly enlightening. Thank you both so very very much! Peggy Lee is my favorite singer.
Thank you so much for watching our show. I hope you’ll check out our other great interviews and consider subscribing to our UA-cam channel 🙏❤️
Holly says it perfectly: Peggy's songs were timeless because she recorded songs by the best songwriters. She even wrote many of her classics herself! I discovered Peggy through her duet with the great Gilbert OSullivan, Can't Think Straight and I've got many of her albums on CD. Great interview as always Harvey!
Have you seen my interview with Gilbert O’Sullivan? He talks about that duet with Peggy.
Wow!!! Fabulous interview with Peggy Lee’s remarkable granddaughter. I love Peggy Lee and have been rediscovering her in the last few years. I absolutely adore her song version of The Folks Who Live on the Hill and I was overjoyed learning it was her favorite song as well. I learned so much in this fabulous interview and can’t wait to read her recently released autobiography. I read about her early life and terrible stepmother a few years ago and her travels to pursue her career but didn’t finish her first book sadly. I put her album on everyday and just bought two more that I can’t wait to receive. Holly’s respect for her grandmother in so genuine. What a wonderful person Holly is. Thank you for this wonderful interview Harvey. I have enjoyed many of your interviews.
Thank you so much for your very kind feedback about our show. It’s greatly appreciated!❤️
There is nothing like the sound of Peggy Lee and David Barbour
I agree 100%
I am so surprised that no one has commented to the fact that she had the sexiest female voice of any woman singer because she did.
@lindaschaefer5499 I agree. Her voice was very sexy.
You look like that Norwegian beauty
She sure does!!!
Omg! “Is That all There Is?” Still plays in my mind. My father played non-stop after the death of my mother. (I was 5 years old, in 1972 & she was killed im a car accident at age 28. They had been married 8 years. He loved music, and I was well aware of Peggy Lee.
OMG what a horrible tragedy. I’m so very sorry to learn this tremendous loss you suffered at such a young age. My heart goes out to you. I wish I could give you a big hug. ❤️❤️❤️
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 oh gosh! Thank you for your kindness, but all that to say, even at that young age, I knew very well who Peggy Lee was! That voice could never be mistaken!❤️
Yes absolutely. She had a very distinctive voice.
WE LOVED THAT SONG AS TEENS WHEN IT CAME OUT!! I REMEMBER FRIENDS ALWAYS PLAYING IT! SINGING TO IT AS WELL!
@xavierminchello8431 which song?
Harvey, do you have a social media that we could follow? Also, were you familiar with singer Kay Starr?
You can follow my Facebook page and the Facebook page of our show. I’m also on Instagram. Our show also has a website www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com. Yes I’m familiar with the music of Kay Starr.
PEGGY WAS THE BOMB! HEART❤❤❤ INCREDIBLE TALENT!
Yes! I loved doing this interview with Peggy’s granddaughter!
Oh, my goodness. What a gift to meet Miss Peggy Lee’s granddaughter and to see that she has inherited her loveliness, warmth and dignity.
And the BEST interviewer out there gave us this conversation.
You all filled my heart today and brought me back to memories of Miss Lee’s artistry.
And I’ll definitely be playing some Peggy Lee music tonight!
🎼 🎶 🥂 💐
The fact that you feel I’m the best interviewer out there means the world to me. Thank you from my heart!!
That was a fantastic interview! So heartfelt and Harvey you are so talented in bringing out the best in people you interview. I know almost nothing about Peggy Lee, but she was really brought to life by her granddaughter and your deft questioning. Really fabulous!
I very much appreciate your extremely kind and generous feedback. Thank you so much!! Please spread the word about our show!!🙏❤️
Harvey, what a fantastic interview! I am not that familiar with Ms. Peggy Lee (aside from her song “Fever”) but the way Ms Peggy Lee designed her life and manifested the success she enjoyed, is so impressive.
I hope Holly is able to fulfill the goals of the movie; documentary and coffee table books. I can imagine them all being hugely successful.
I’m so pleased that this interview with Holly allowed you to rediscover the wonderful Peggy Lee. Thanks so much for letting me know you enjoyed it. ❤️
GREAT INTERVIEW! AWSOME!!
Thank you so very much!! I hope you will do me the honor of subscribing to our UA-cam channel. 🙏❤️
I loved this interview!
Thank you so much for loving our show. That means the world to me
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 Holly said Michelle Williams was slated to play her Grandmother in a movie. I feel Haley Reinhart would be wonderful because of her amazing singing talent. She did a cover of "Fever" which reminded me of Peggy Lee. Keep up the great interviews!
@maddyLV21 thank you so much
