  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Kathleen Zellner, Renowned Defense Attorney and Star of “Making a Murderer”
    About Harvey's guest:
    Kathleen Zellner is an American attorney who has worked extensively in wrongful conviction advocacy. Notable clients Zellner has represented include Steven Avery (who was the subject of the 2015 and 2018 Netflix series Making a Murderer), Kevin Fox (who was falsely accused of murdering his daughter), Ryan W. Ferguson, and 19 exonerees who are listed in the National Registry of Exonerations.
    She opened her firm, Kathleen T. Zellner & Associates in Downers Grove, Illinois, in 1991. Her firm handles wrongful conviction cases, civil rights violations, medical malpractice, and prisoner abuse cases. Zellner had achieved 19 exonerations as of October 2018, and now 20 exonerations for clients.
    Notable clients Zellner has represented include Steven Avery (who was the subject of the 2015 and 2018 Netflix series Making a Murderer), Kevin Fox (who was falsely accused of murdering his three-year-old daughter), and 19 exonerees who are listed in the National Registry of Exonerations. Newsweek reported that a lawyer said that facing her at trial was "worse than my divorce."
    As of March 2016, she had won almost $90 million from wrongful conviction and medical malpractice lawsuits. In 2000, The National Law Journal named Zellner a top ten trial lawyer in the United States for a suicide malpractice verdict of $13 million. She also won a $15.5 million verdict for the violation of Kevin Fox's civil rights in 2007, an $11 million verdict for Ryan W. Ferguson in Missouri who had served 10 years in jail, and a $9 million civil rights verdict for Ray Spencer in Washington in 2014. In 2012, she won the American Bar Association "Pursuit of Justice" Award.

    A brilliant and very insightful interview of a true champion for seeking justice of those wrongfully convicted. Is it any wonder that the State of Wisconsin is obfuscating everything Kathleen puts forward? The stakes for them are massive. We all hope that Kathleen gets her day in court and that both Steven and Brendan are released. It's only a matter of time before the truth is finally revealed. Could you imagine the likes of Kratz, Fallon, Gahn, Culhane, Eisenberg and Colborn being questioned by Kathleen Zellner? MaM 3 - bring it 👍

    The questions you asked Kathleen Zellner were unique, ( as to, they haven't been asked hundreds of not millions of times already.) I am glad I got to hear what AMAZING things she had ALREADY done, the IDEAS she had for making the court rooms BETTER, and the way she speaks about mentoring, helping, and believing in YOUNG, NEW LAWYERS / ATTORNEYS of the future if HUMBLING. I would VOTE her in as a Judge ANY DAY!
    ( P.S. Could you IMAGINE what it would be like if KATHLEEN ZELLNER, KELLY SIEGLER, and JUDGE MILIAN, sat as JUSTICES of the SUPREME COURT?! 🤔😲😁

    6-12 suspected wrongful conviction cases left after a corrupt prosecutor has passed away. That prosecutor will never face justice, so the jurisdiction must. We have to hold jurisdictions accountable, because that will force their hand to create real oversight.

    Thanks for presenting this WONDERFUL interview. Kathleen Zellner is probably the only person in this country that has a chance to get justice for Steven Avery in the Wisconsin court system because she WILL NEVER QUIT when she is passionately convinced her client is INNOCENT.
    Unfortunately many thousands of innocent prisoners will never be able to get justice & will serve their entire sentence, even die as an innocent person serving life without parole, or refuse parole rather than admit to guilt to be released. My son served his entire sentence in spite of us spending our life's savings trying to get ANY chance to prove his innocence. No one in the Wisconsin justice system has ANY interest in an innocent person's story.
    I am passionate about the Avery/Dassey case & anything to do with Kathleen Zellner. This was one of the most delightful & inspirational interviews I've seen in a long time.
    When Kathleen took a second look at the case when Ryan Ferguson asked her to, she realized the case was bogus, & it should be easy to overturn because the evidence is completely fabricated & misleading to the jury. She didn't realize how deep or how high the corruption would take her. What should have been a hearing to present the case, followed by a new trial & release has turned into a HUGE MUD HOLE of excrement to wade through. I see she has her "big girl boots" on, & will continue to wade through it until she gets to "solid ground" & drag the entire state of Wisconsin into the middle of the excrement.

I wholeheartedly believe the documentary in which Kathleen got the experts to investigate, is fair and didn't try to be more favorable to Stephen. My question is: could it even be "higher up" putting pressure on judges to prevent a re-trial, out of fear 1. For loss of faith in the American justice system, 2. A renewed claim against corrupt Manitowoc County, police and that AWFUL prosecutor.....makes you think doesn't it.....

    It is amazing to me that despite the accumulation of so much new evidence and the undermining of the prosecution's evidence, the process leading to the retrial of Steven Avery is so complicated and time-consuming. I function in a different i.e. European, continental legal system. In your country in the United States, isn't there a path for the prosecutor's office to be re-involved in the investigation if there is new evidence pointing to a different perpetrator? Isn't there a path to request an investigation if new facts have emerged in the case?

    Kathleen is correct about the evidentiary hearing. She was right about it during MaM season 2. “They want us to just go away. And quietly. Please, go quietly.”

    Biggest takeaway from watching the Steven and Brendan Avery cases on Netflix is how cool and calm Kathrine Zellner is with everyone she works with on her staff, as well as her clients and experts. I strive to be like her in my life.

    Can you re-interview her with updates? I understand they are going to higher courts, but I have so many questions about what that means. This is my third time watching this one alone. Great job!

    You can tell that Kathleen REALLY knows her stuff. And the fact that she turned down multimillion dollar civil payouts to focus on exonerating wrongfully convicted individuals says a lot about her character. She seems to be super well rounded in her legal experience touching everything from civil to criminal trials to appellate law

    • @milart12
      @milart12 Рік тому

      Come on. She is a wealthy attorney. She has just as much character as the next person; no more, no less. AND Avery is 100% guilty.

      @@milart12 just saying. You learn a lot about people when they can either do something moral or take the cash. You don’t know until you’re in that situation. It looks like she was able to find a way to do both and good on her for that. You only get one go around in this life and to dedicate it to this cause says a lot.

    • @milart12
      @milart12 Рік тому

      @@TrevanDotCom But what is particularly "moral" about her. Don't you think the vast majority of people want genuinely innocent people freed? Of course, they do. Most attorneys would LOVE to be in her position. BTW, Zellner's husband is a commodities broker, and they live in a mansion in a wealthy suburb. She has made tons of money off of these cases. Is it moral to accuse these police officers of framing an innocent man without a shred of evidence?

    The documentary series was one of the first things I watched to see if I could tell which of the many characters were telling the truth based on a verbal pattern I had been noticing in liars. I didn't see a stick of manipulation in AWESOME Zellner!! I loved seeing her very detailed questions and analyzing the facts to figure out what really happened in the case.

    Amazing interview. I do believe Kathleen is right; all the people involved with what happened to Teresa, someone who knows something is going to eventually get a conscience and take the weight of this huge lie off their shoulders. It's just heart wrenching for Brendan and Steven in the meantime 😒

    There are many people who cannot afford reputable lawyers, why can't (after learning the "appointed attorney" works for the state not for the defendant) why can't they hire a law student in graduate school?

    • @harveybrownstoneinterviews8980
