  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Liberace Protégé, Steve Garey
    About Harvey's guest:
Today’s guest, Steve Garey, is a renowned, 2-time gold record winning pianist, vocalist and recording artist who has a very prestigious connection to 2 show business legends: Liberace and Frank Sinatra.
He was selected by Liberace to be his very last protégé, and he is the only protégé of Liberace’s to receive the endorsement and support of the Board of Directors of The Liberace Foundation and the Liberace Estate.
And the other superstar with which our guest shares an illustrious history is the Chairman of the Board, the one and only Frank Sinatra, who chose our guest, when he was only 20 years old, to be his piano accompanist. Our guest began his career in the 1970s as a child prodigy, performing concerts throughout the world, which led to a successful career in nightclubs as well as in films and on television. And in 1981, Mr. Showmanship himself, Liberace selected our guest as his last and final protégé.
He studied with Liberace for the last six years of his life. Our guest has performed at the most prestigious venues around the world, and besides performing with Liberace and Frank Sinatra, he’s worked alongside dozens of superstars including Rosemary Clooney, Dinah Shore, Bernadette Peters, Johnny Mathis, Debbie Reynolds, Jane Russell, John Travolta and many more.
With his incredibly versatile repertoire, which includes everything from the Jazz Classics, Pop and Country Music to the great American Songbook, our guest has given Command Performances for 5 American Presidents in addition to a number of Crown Monarchs in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He’s been featured in Cosmopolitan Magazine, the Hollywood Reporter, and on the cover of both TV GUIDE and the American music industry publication "The Score” magazine".
He’s also a Contributing Editor to Keyboard World Magazine, and he continues to serve as a consultant on books and film projects regarding both Liberace and Frank Sinatra.

What a lovely Gentleman, Harvey, I enjoyed his stories so much.
You asked him a question and just let him speak & it turned out wonderful!
I have to say Harvey, you have been looking pretty sharp for awhile now in your new wardrobe...love it!
I sure hope he does write a book, he's filled with such precious stories that need to be shared. I realize, maybe not all stories.

Thank you, Thank you! I was mesmerized by this wonderful interview with Steve sharing his personal life with Liberace, what an honor! Loved the way he shared about feeling Lee's presence as he played the piano with 'bits' of Liberace's notes included, and to actually smell his fragrance and after at his home. I have read that people who tour his home can smell cigarette smoke in the dining room! I also agree with him about his view re the movie 'Behind the Candlelabra'. I do hope he will write a book some time and so sorry for the passing of your spouse Steve. XO (for the fur babies). 🙏

These included several onesies of hot pants (one with an attached ermine cape). Believe me, the hot pants were so very short in had to be a concern that something might fall out. This venue contains all of Liberace's cars and his stage pianos and countless glamorous artifacts etc. It really is an impressive place and a fun tour that is one of the most popular tours to take in all of Las Vegas right now surprisingly. Then also they have the official, original Liberace Museum Collection tour which is located at the former Michael Jackson home there in Las Vegas called Thriller Villa. That tour is a master class in the history of Liberace and of the entertainment industry and of Las Vegas itself. Good interview. I remember when Liberace was on Oprah's show. I watched it when it first aired and only that one time. This is all from memory of many years ago, but what stood out for me is Oprah asking him why he never married. Not just asking him once but making a topic of it. I think that Liberace ended the subject in good humor by saying that since his brother George had multiple marriages that he didn't want to make the same mistakes. From that day forward I have never been an Oprah fan. I didn't admire her interview style. My mother was a great Liberace fan and that is how I became a fan also (I visited his Museum in Las Vegas years ago.) My Mother was aware that Liberace (no doubt) was gay but had no issue with it. However, I do understand that many of his lady fans my mother's age would have been horrified and unforgiving and thus his reason for remaining private. It was no one's business.

Totally awesome interview Harvey. One of your best I think. You ask the best questions. I tried googling the 60 Minutes interview, but couldnt find it. Could it be called something else perhaps. Im in Australia so not sure about U.S. show names. I would love to see how Liberace was on that interview that Steve mentioned.

I looked for that 60 Minutes interview as well and had no luck. Too bad, as like you, I am anxious to see it. I am delighted that you enjoyed this interview. We’ve been inundated with requests to have Steve Garey return to the show to continue the conversation, so get ready for more fascinating insights about Liberace!

It is in a compilation video originally offered by the Liberace Museum and is now owned by Viacom in New York. I have a copy of it that I used in my stage shows. My copy is here in my archive room. I also believe the entire video has been duplicated on to UA-cam by one of the outstanding Liberace historians channels like Liberace Girl. It runs approximately an hour and features a variety of media appearances by Lee over the years with this one "60 minutes" type show being just one of them. I could mail you my original if you absolutely have to have it I suppose. I do know that interview segment we are speaking of was filmed in the late 1960s at his new (then) home in Palm Springs outside in the front garden just after sunset.

@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 Thanks for that. I found another interview on UA-cam with Steve and another man doing an interview outside Liberace's old house. He looked quite different to how he looks now. I didnt recognise him at first. It was another interesting interview. He seems a lovely man full of interesting stories (especially about Elvis intervention !!!!)

It seems really unfair to evaluate or judge his not "coming out" publicly based on society's values today. As we all do, he lived life mainly in accordance with the values of his time. He was a wonderful performer and, I suspect, a pretty wonderful person.

I just don't buy that Liberace was real macho in real life off stage. But the thing I didn't like about Liberace the most though was how spitefully a brag bag he was in interviews & in real life. Just Sickening....you could tell Liberace was very poor at one time Early in life.
