I'm a veteran, former prison guard and now a truck driver. I don't often feel very emotional. Steve Hartman's stories draw emotions from me that I often forget are still within me. Thank you sir for being one of the best journalists in this earth's history. Thank you to this tender hearted and generous woman for this beautiful act of kindness and healing. God bless you all.

Jeffrey, thank you for your service then & now. This hit me hard too. My son's first week at his first duty station, they found out two of their members committed suicide. There's just not enough care in the world it seems, that's why I come to Steve's stories. To feel those emotions that are often forgotten. I'm not religious by any means, but I pray for you - and all of those that serve 🙏

I watched this segment and wept for the soldier involved, then I cried for the thousands of broken men and women who have served our country for the military industrial complex. I go out of my way to hire veterans because of this and have seen how these wars have broken good people.

Acts of kindness never go out of style. I update this comment as of April 19th 2022. It is 4 days after my retired soldiers funeral. Thankfully he didn’t suffer from PTSD. Brain cancer took his life. But I extend my deepest thanks to this woman for her persistence. I would want anything of my husband’s returned to me as well. I’m so sorry for this family’s loss. I’m assuming for whatever reason this young soldier was unable to get help which is why more and more we must support groups that help these soldiers in any way we can.

Everyone commenting here. From every background imaginable. Veterans and non-Veterans. Those who have experienced trauma and those who trauma has yet to visit. What an amazing thing that this beautiful act of kindness, something we desperately need more of, has brought us here together. I watched this story this past Sunday, and like many, many others wept because it touched something deep inside. A connection to bravery, kindness, determination, and heartbreak. Let us never forget the bonds we all share. Our humanity. Our capacity for compassion.
Thank you once again Mr. Hartman. Thank you Donna, you are an angel. God Bless You Mckenzie Family. We grieve with you. We pray for you.

Steve's "On the Road" series is one of the few positives of mainstream media today. Seeing people like Donna who has God's love in her heart is one of many that have been profiled for a number of years now. It's so sad that Sgt McKenzie took his own life. He had much to live for.
My brother did three tours in Vietnam during the war from 1967 to 1970 and has PTSD. The things he saw and had to do to survive pretty much tell why.

My father was a Korea and Vietnam vet. And the most violent P.O.S. He never spoke of his service to our country. The only this he talked about was how badly he was treated when he came back home. Many years later I applied to get his service records though National Personnel Record Center. It took 10 years to get the records. Many parts of his files were redacted. It was rather shocking. He was a true military hero. He had many metal and service badges. He was a Tank commander in Occupied Germany. He was an sharp shooter a military weapons expect ect. Then I read his files and found out he was a P.O.W. in Vietnam in 1968.. I have no idea why he was in Vietnam at at that time. But at least I can tell his great grand son his great grandfather was a war hero.

If this is the PTSD members of the military face after coming back from fighting battles they know little of and have little control over, how much more those innocent civilians in those countries where they fight, who lose limbs, loved ones and livelihoods daily? We should humanize them as much and get their stories as well, that way the appetite for war and the urge to support wars our governments propose will reduce significantly.
Many in Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria were forced to quit jobs as doctors, pilots and teachers, and leave behind their homes, shopping malls and ancestral lands to become homeless yet unwanted and treated like trash in foreign lands just because of the choices of their leaders. Sad sad world out there😥
