The third season of the Mandalorian is going be divisive amongst Star Wars fans, because lets be honest there's no franchise that has a more passionate fanbase. I actually believe despite the problems with pacing and occasionally cheesy dialogue (which have always been apart of star wars) the message behind the third season is extremely important.

A great way to summon up Bo and the Mandalorian's is that poem by Tennyson. To barrow from B5 again, 'Though we are not now of that strength, Which in old days moved earth and heaven, That which we are, we are. One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, But strong in will, To strive, to seek, To find and not to yield.'

My favourite moment of the series, was when Din and Bo went to bathe in holy Mandalorian water and Din went underwater. She didn't even blink. She just jumped right after him. She really is Din's friend and her chemistry towards Mando was in my opinion super natural and well acted, you could pick crystallised respect out of thin air when these two were together. She even respected that Dark Sabre should be Din's, until he rightfully gave it back to her. Best team in entire show.

They’ve also ALWAYS had very different purposes in life. Bo-Katan found her purpose in the protection and unity of her people back in The Clone Wars. Djarin found his purpose in protecting this child and growing into his humanity in the first season of the show. That’s what made the appearance of these characters like Bo-Katan, Ahsoka, Luke, and even Boba Fett so impactful. There is this galaxy spanning loom of fate spinning with these legendary figures weaving in and out of it, and at the very edge there is a father and a son borderline oblivious to the gravity of it all, just trying to survive, do what’s right, and find some kind of peace.

@@uhwaykin This is what i liked about Mandalorian. Moving legendary figures to the second plane, and experiencing them as Mando, almost like for a first time. I got really tired of Jedi being the bread and butter of Star Wars. Mandalorian, Bobba and Anor gave focus to what is going on in the background, (real talk, with a real folk ;) and added depth to already rich lore. Almost shrouding Jedi in a fog of mystique. The idea of force users not jumping at you from the screen every 10 seconds with a new and more ridiculous force power, flashing laser swords left and right is very refreshing. Jedi/ Sith is a dish best served sporadically and in meaningful way.

Yeah natural chemistry when she was coming back out to tell him to piss off permanently the second time the ship came back or when she met him originally and made fun of him for being in a cult...bo-katan was there to make Din and the rest of the mandalorians look inept and needing rescuing repeatedly just to get to her getting the darks error back and being the leader, even tho they wrote her as uninterested in anything after doing what no member of deathwatch would do and that is surrender....they wanted her to rule just by having the dark saber she could never win even tho she turned her back on that whole supposed absolute rule when maul won it...then they give it to her and she forgets she has it most the timeit just so they can kill off Paz Vizla and then easily destroy it forgetting it was made of beskar...every interaction between those 2 was forced for plots sake

Clone Wars season 3 was fairly clunky too if I remember. It also doesn’t help that Boba Fett was all over the place, Andor was a smash hit, and I really do think they tried to shove Rangers of the New Republic into Mando. Bo Katan has the narrative thrust for this season, for sure. But you know who was beside her the entire time, and was actually the source of character growth? It was always Din Djarin. Even if Bo became the face of season 3, Din was still the core of the season.
Bo was left in a state of depression. Din came along lifted her out of it, gave her a place to call home, and then through that gave her a reason to keep fighting for what she believed in. And every step of that Journey for her Din was right there to support her.

The dynamic at play, is something I love seeing in storytelling.
The “hero” isn’t the one to actually fix the problems and save the day… but merely the initial spark, supporting hand, and enabler to bring the fires to bear against the problems.
Din is the protagonist. But his role is not to save the world. He is the spark, that ignited the flames that forged a new era, through the hands of others who carried the strength to do so.
He is not the savior, he is the one who pushed the real heroes to get up and move.

I’m starting to notice a thread possibility in this season which, if I’m right, is a very gutsy and possibly genius story telling move on Fav-loni’s part, especially going forward.
They could use the Dins as our view into major Galactic events from the viewpoint, not of the “main” character (Bo, Ahsoka, the Skywalkers, etc.) but rather from the eyes of a pair of extremely competent “support” characters who come in, help the “heroes” resolve their conflict, and then ride off into the sunset and the next adventure.
That way they can “cross paths” with, say, Sabine or Boba, or even Po or Ray, help them, and move on.
In season four of “their” show I can see them taking various missions that lead to them uncovering information leading up to the Thrawn movie. They will also come across things needed for their own growth like a Holicron for Grogu’s training as an example.
    The possibilities are endless.

This is actually a well known story telling technique. In the first Star Wars film we were experiencing a brand new world through Luke’s eyes. By the time we get to Mando we have longtime casual Star Wars fans who know about Boba Fett and deeper fans who’ve seen everything including the animated stuff.
It was necessary to write the story in a way that allowed it to introduce casual fans into a deeper lore without alienating them, hence the covet of hidden Mandalorians who had little contact with the rest of Mandalorian society, and the main character of Din Djarin who is our narrator, who knows basically nothing about Mandalore’s history. We get told that story as he learns it.

They came together largely because people kept on doing the right thing like rescuing children. Bo Katan has consistently been a favorite part of this show for me. For a bit, I wished this was actually her show -- kind of like Crosshair in The Bad Batch. Her story is one of the most powerful character growths told in the universe yet.
Speaking of biases, I think mine comes from Andor and shows like it, where the depth of character is much more efficiently expressed. I was able to understand the stakes and care about pretty much all of these brand new characters (with just a few exceptions) incredibly quickly. With Bo, it takes more time. I don't think I would have cared nearly as much if not for her Clone Wars and Rebels arcs.

She comes out ready to fight from her castle and sees a grogu needs help, without hesitation goes to help, Din falls in the water, without hesitation she jumps in to help. I agree with you. There were distractions in Season 3, but it was clear in the Boba Fett episode with the Armorer that the Season 3 was about Mandalorians overcoming their devisions in order to retake Mandalore. This story was embodied in Bo-Katan overcoming her irreverence to the core principles of the Creed, that moment when she says that her father was 'a great man', and she stops thinking of Din as some zealot when he honors her father and then does it again when he takes the Creed. Katee Sackhoff has Bo-Katan swelling with reverence for what it means to be Mandalorian. Yet she continues to be pompous and entitled. Her redemption, or the reversing the curse, was not rushed in one episode. I particularly like the scene with the Ugnaughts, when she announces herself basically as the Princess and is completely ignored. Din then has to teach her a lesson in how to respect other cultures. Paz Vizsla then teaches her a lesson in selflessness. After she saves Din Djarin over and over again over the last two season, it is the littlest among them, little Grogu who saves her life; it was not her shield that saved them. Takes a lot to humble Bo-Katan. Thanks for your post.

I agree with your assessment of Bo-Katan. My favorite part of this season has been watching her grow as a leader. I also believe that the dark saber being destroyed is the best thing that could have happened to the Mandalorians. Having the ruler of a planet being the person who could fight better is not a sustainable way to choose a leader. I've met people in my life that were amazing in a fight, but otherwise very nasty people. Bo is a true leader, she doesn't try to change people, she works with them for the greater goal. The Armorer understood what was needed to bring the groups together and did a brilliant job of communicating that to Bo. Working together with Bo, the Armorer helped restore the Mandalorians. There are a lot of people on the internet that wanted Din to be the ruler of Mandalore, but he had no desire for that. Designating a person to be in charge who actively doesn't want to do it can be devastating. Yes, this season was clunky. But it also told a great story of Bo-Katan and true leadership, and the winning back of Mandalore through her leadership. This is the way.

I enjoyed season three, especially after watching them in one binge. The formula was the same as previous seasons with an overarching quest of mandalorians are stronger together with a different quest for each episode. In seasons one and two, Din was continually doing something for others to get what he was looking for, whether it be Boba Fetts armor or the location of other Mandalorians. The Jack Black Lizzie episode was necessary for Din and Bo learn about each other and to work together instead of just fighting off enemies. I think one of the reasons season three was not as popular is viewer and critic expectatios. There was so much to tie together to get to the culmination of the retaking of Mandalore, but viewers expected it to take most of the season for Din Jarin to be redeemed in the living waters. Instead, Din teamed up with Bo and brought her to his covert where she was accepted. And then there was the when is Thrawn going to show up expectation. It is like Gideon was suddenly relegated to minon in viewer expectations, instead of remembering he had a plan and some end goal relating to Grogos blood all along.
There was growth and change in multiple character arcs, including both Mandalorians groups. TheArmorer has even relaxed her beliefs for the sake of all Mandalorians, accepting that the sighting of the mythasaur is heralding in a new age, which means re-evaluating and possibly changing or updating your beliefs. She took the ill refugee Mandalorians to the fleet where they could get better medical, and they were not even part of her sect. The Armorer also did not include the keep the helmet on part of the creed in the ceremony, and the helmeted and not helmeted Mandalorians are standing mixed instead of in 2 groups at the forge lighting.
The Mandalorian is an escape from our day to day life, and it definitely entertains. The hero vs villain plot line leads us to speculate on who is actually the villain in each episode. Is it Bo, the Armorer, Elia Kane, Ax, the other group of Mandalorians?
I enjoy your thought provoking posts. Thanks for sharing!

Bo Katan is a FAR better character than Rey. Mostly because of how flawed and checkered of a life she's lived. It's the tenacity she's shown in spite of her failures, mistakes and flaws that makes her one of the Top 10 characters for me tbh.
She rebelled against and overthrew her own sister by fighting alongside a Warband of Mandalorian Terrorists, who in spite of how morally bankrupt and radical they were, genuinely believed that Satine's mandate of pacifism was making the Mandalorians to weak for their own good. A chapter in her life which probably haunts her now after having the time to reflect upon her days as a youth during Deathwatch's reign of terror.
In spite of all that, she managed to turn herself around from that and would go on to become the leader that her people needed in such a turbulent time in Mandalorian History during the Imperial Era. A leader who in spite of her flaws and how massively she has failed her people time and time again, she never gave up at trying her best for her people. A quality I respect her for.

Really excellent, thoughtful points raised here. Bo Katan has a huge backstory compared to Din Djarin and Grogu. There's a timeline established and she is the live action embodiment of that [tho not really accurate age-wise]. Her growth reflects the growth to be of Mandalore. The Armorer has given lessons, interpreted events she may or may not have been on site for, and not only shaped the CotW but held them together against the odds. Part of her must be exhausted, another part exhilarated to see the new age arriving. The efforts these two characters made to expand their own horizons must have been awesome but alas, it was all off screen and I admit, I resent that, greatly.
That's MY biggest complaint with this season. In Season 1&2, we saw Din Djarin and Grogu confronting moments that changed them, advanced their understanding, healed a few of their aches and fears. IF this season had say, 10 extra minutes an episode, we might have seen the Armorer and Bo Katan interactions - not to mention Din Djarin and either, or Paz Visla and any others, or any Night Owl and anyone! To have those type of moments so Season 3 wouldn't feel so much a cast of extras tossed in overwriting the "main characters" of this show. The creators and writers surely saw / felt the Frustration of Mando, Luke & Grogu "stealing" Boba Fett; to do this again in the neglect of character moments was an error they didn't have to make. IMHO it is why the marketing rumors of who is the other spy made such a hash of it all. It simply wasn't Obvious Enough for the average viewer watching and nibbling snacks with friends or on the sly on their phone during their lunch break that the 'other spy' was the small group returning to Mandalore and discovering not only survivors but Imps. That is clunky writing, not gullible to controversy fans, IMO.
Life IS busy. Shorter episodes make sense in the I've only got 41:21 to spare lives that we lead. BUT that means the pacing and moments and writing must be perfect. We *know* the creators and writers can do this, we've seen that. Season 3 missed the mark. But, in the larger scheme of the Galaxy, far, far away, it's one season, out of hopefully many. It will be a footnote attached to the overall groovy content you can't wait to recommend to a friend, or fifty.

I find the idea that season 3 is clunky very funny to me. Honestly in my opinion season 3 is the first one that is NOT clunky compared to one and two. And don’t get me wrong I like seasons 1 and 2. But this felt much more concise and to the point we have all of these characters finally coming together for a cause and it’s building into the sequel trilogy. There was significantly less filler and way more main story. The story was ALWAYS going to have Bo Katan be more important, and that’s exactly how it should be. In fact I think all of the characters are where I want them going forward. This season did almost everything I wanted. My only complaint was that one boring ass section on Coruscant in episode 3 because MAN was that a stinker.

Spot on with this one. I don't think any fan has had a problem with the strong female lead. There are plenty of popular examples throughout movies and games. What we are seeing is a strong reaction (over reaction?) to the un-deserving characters being forced down our throats based specifially on gender. (looking at you, Rey) But Boka Tan is actually a very well fleshed out character with a long history of failures and succeses. She is one of my favorite Star Wars characters, unfortunately she gets lost in the whole "Force is Female" conflict. It's one of the biggest problems I have with the current Lucasfilm leadership. They seem intent on splitting the fandom. And we are falling for it.

@@rexlevitak1 I have no disagreement that sex appeal has been a component for the popularity of many characters. You said the fandom is “full of fans” who have this “revolting” problem. But then you say they are a loud minority. Seem contradictory. No, I think that when the creators attempt to push strong female leads like it’s new thing and people feel preached to as if they are guilty of something they are not; It adds to the toxic splitting of the fandom. Especially with established franchises. I do agree with you that normal fans do not have a problem with well written, strong and interesting female characters. Im fact let’s just have more good characters that are not given more or less value because they have an immutable trait.

ITA switching from all characterization having to be through your Voice to the physical evolution of characterization must be a funky & fun transition. I think she [the actress] has grown in to her character and the challenging difference in this format. I kinda wonder if Pedro will face that same transition [& fan fuss] IF the helmet comes off more in the next seasons. His voice carries so much of the character up to this point; it might be a distraction to have his expressions & growth in to that before us at first.

    • @AstinCrow
      @AstinCrow Рік тому +1

@@unclebozo9845That doesn't mean she was instantly able to act the part of Bo Katan in live action seamlessly. Voice Acting divides the voice from the rest of the body, meaning VAs don't have to care about facial expressions, posture, and movements of their limbs and so they don't think about it. Instead, everything goes into the tone, inflections, and other parts of the voice to make it as immersive as possible.
Now, all of the sudden, you have to add in everything else without a baseline animation showing what your lines are for, or how the character will be moving. That's a real challenge for anyone who goes from voice acting a character to playing said character in live action. She was pulled in not because she was the best actress for the job, but because she has been in the role for a long time. Not that this makes her a worse choice, but it does explain why it takes a while for Bo Katan to feel more alive with her actions. Just look at her introduction in season 2 to her final scene in season 3 and you can see extravagant improvement on the actress's part.

Took me about 29 years before I figured out why I had such a bias against women, so little trust in women, etc. Of course too many bad relationships where you get cheated on, etc, don't help heal that wound. Unfortunately in my experience, whenever a man voiced his feelings on this matter it was met with scorn, mockery, and just the usual insults too. Which obviously doesn't help either. I think we need to remember that this show is connected to other shows. We're only beginning to really understand the new republic which wasn't fleshed out by the sequel trilogy at all. But I'm sure in the coming shows like Ashoka we'll learn a lot more about them and how incompetent they are to withstand Thrawn.

@@GenerationTech But they have to realise that not everyone is going to watch every show. So if I only watch Mandalorian, that episode was a complete waste.
Maybe they could do some sort of anthology series for these small stories that don't really go anywhere except to grow the world.

Of course Bo-Katan isn't a Mary Sue, I don't think anyone ever said she was. Her long story of growth into the woman we see in Mando has been played out through the Clone Wars show. Where she is getting grief is because they have used her to supplant Din Jarin, the main lead of the show and a man. This season she has constantly saved his life time and again when in the other two seasons he could take care of himself pretty good and didn't need help. They have used her to lever him out of his own show and make it about her now.

    • @katiekofemug
      @katiekofemug Рік тому +1

I think one of Din's strengths was he knew when he needed help & asked for it. From Kuiil to Cara to Greef Karga to Boba Fett & Fenic Shand to Mayfield and even Peli Motto. He was grounded in the covert but he knew, out in the galaxy, he needed back up, assistance and input/ info. That didn't make him weak then, and being part of a larger story doesn't make him weak now. It has expanded his universe and ours with a broader frame, characters, adventures and small step growth that is how we usually evolve.
On the Other Hand >g< I do agree with only 8 eps, the focus was jarring this season and it did feel like an abrupt switch from a tightly focused tale to an ensemble of extras that we barely got to know and plotting that felt incomplete or badly paced. Din's character growth and realizations mostly happened off screen and we were cheated of those moments. Even his earnest pledge to BoKatan was diminished by the 'little cabin with the frog pond' ending imho. Realistically, darn it, that's how life goes. Intense moments followed by the hum drum mend your gear, repair your transport, get some rest and try to stretch the budget to nourishment beyond beans and rice 3 times a day.

@@katiekofemug Yes, that's the part that I was commenting on, the jarring aside from focusing on Din to focusing on ensemble group. And yes, I agree, Din did ask for help if the quest was to hard for him, but in this season he boldly goes on a mission, gets caught or the crap kicked out of him but its ok, Bo-Katan is close by to save the day, lol ... and it's always Bo-Katan.
I actually really like her character and how Katee Sackhoff plays her and if this was a series about the Mandalorians retaking their planet then she would have been a great lead, but it wasn't sold to us on that premise. It was sold as a western style gunslinger coming into town to take care of business, as a bounty hunter going on missions and that was a very cool premise. Now its the 'The Mando Family and Friends Show', lol:)

@@ukmediawarrior Side Quests Season didn't exactly suck, but it's not the shining moment either, ITA. I'm hopeful for Season 4, but 2 long years to get there, with this not pleasant taste in our mouths, won't generate the same excitement / anticipation we greeted this Season with. But, in the meantime, there's LOTS to talk about at least. >g

I think the problem is Bo katan feels like she's just been given everything she feels like a side character with supposed to feel anything with she hasn't really had any story only focus on her and she's feels like she's only cannibalising on other shows success she doesn't feel complete she just feels like the character that's there to fix the problems that the riders have put themself in and she does not feel satisfying both when she wins and lose

That's valid, i think they definitely could've spent more time on her character and fleshing her out instead of relying on fan knowledge from the TCW and Rebels series. But i guess filoni just expects everyone to know her background and history.

    Waxing philosophical again?
    Absolutely love it.
These moments when someone rolls through something like this, packed so densely with profound messaging and heavy themes in play, laying out all the parts on the table to be seen and understood plainly in their own right.
This is an important, I would say vital, component to the experience that is Star Wars.
It can be so easy to watch at face value, and completely miss the depth at stake for everything happening.

First, I am glad to see you are feeling better. I do appreciate your videos. This season had some great moments, but also had some that were eh. The problem I have with this season is how it ended. That past 2 seasons final episodes left you like WTF! What is going to happen next? This season was like ok, did the season or series just end. Could it be that we all are aware that these characters will be back if not in another season but most likely in a new series. Regardless, I loved the season and series.
