The New Republic is the kind of government you get when the chaotic good faction actually wins and ends up in power... chaotic goods aren't usually competent in operating and regulating a government. I think it's cool how the Mandalorian dives into this trope. Same thing actually happens in Star Wars Legends as well! Just takes a long time to happen. Not as immediate as it happens in The Mandalorian.

Hello, a Sikh here. Just a small correction. Kirpan actually means “sword”. It is the bare minimum a Sikh must carry. Weapons are a major part of our religion and culture. We literally worship them. In reality a Sikh is supposed to carry a sword, a knife, a fire arm, a hand dagger and know how to ride a horse in battle. Or in these days a car suffices. A Sikh must also be Shastar vidya (a master of war). So a Sikh must learn warfare and know how to fight when it’s needed. A Sikh must also be a member of a Misl (clan) or Jathabandi (armed group).
    -
Although weapons are our religion and when the mandalorian said this it resonated to me on a person level. Sikhs are to use weapons or war as the last resort. In defence of self or the innocent others. Which is a trait more akin to the Jedi. In fact the Jedi order is very similar to the real life Sikh Nihangs. A warrior order that numbers about 10,000.
    -
The only country where we can really actually practice these traditions is the USA. Although I as a Sikh do own a fire arm and a kirpan. I live in Canada and hence cannot fully appreciate my people’s culture. But Sikhs in America practice it to the fullest extent. For this reason I see America as a beacon of freedom in the world and I praise America a great deal.

The sequence of Din and Bo chasing the SBD through the nightime streets was great, but it reminded me of all the videoes I've watched on droid sapience and their lack of rights. I've never seen a SBD run like that in all of Star Wars, and the body language was very much of a person running for it's life. I was kind of disappointed when the chase ended with it's death. I would be curious to hear what a 'free minded' battle droid has to say on their new station in life and to someone like Din, who has a clear, justifed predjudice against them.

    • @sovietunion7643

even stranger to me was when in the robot bar you had all the robots agree that they wished to find the problem with the malfunctioned not only due to the fact that they would be scrapped but that they genuinely want to uplift their creators. sure you could say that the population is reliant on droids but that scene you saw the droids appreciate given the responsibility of being the foundation of their organic masters civilization. they are treated with much more importance than most droids are in the galaxy, and sure its still a form of servitude, but the idea of droids being happy to take up the main responsibility of their organic master's society brings an even deeper consideration.
not only are they sentient but that scene indicates that they have emotions such as loyalty and a sense of responsibility of not borderline caretakership of their organics, opening up philosophical can of worms that blurrs the lines between servants and foundations of society for droids. could droids be more satisfied with their position if they were given such responsability in other worlds? its a strange question.

    • @Edithae
      @Edithae Рік тому

      @@sovietunion7643
The organic population also seem to be pretty hands off with the droids, leaving them to it to fulfil their jobs without direct control, interference or oppression. The overseer we see at that factory/facility supervising the super battle droids isn't an organic, its another (1st Gen) battle droid. No droid is seen being mistreated by organics (besides the malfunctioning SBD which Bo Katan destroys), in fact IIRC the only organics we see directly interacting with droids are the Urgnaught mechanics, who do their work maintaining the droids with diligence and pride.
This is probably as close to a droid Utopia as droids are ever going to get.
They get to fulfil their (newly re-programmed) peaceful base function without direct mistreatment or direct interference from organics, and they enjoy some degree of freedom and self determination with their publicly operating own droid bars.

Mando noting how reliant the people were on droids was pretty good, and I liked seeing old Clone Wars droids again. But I do still prefer the EU version of the New Republic, instead of being an inefficient and ignorant wasteful organization, the New Republic fell apart after being withered away by many Imperial warlords, Thrawn Campaign, the Yuuzhang Vong War, and Second Galactic Civil War by Jacen Solo

What EU did you read? The New Republic in the EU lost all support from Leia, Han, Luke, etc due to its chronic inaction, multiple times over. Isaard blasted her way out of Coruscant, killing millions, and released a virus that killed non-humans. What did the NR do about it? Nothing. During the Bacta War, they knew full well that taking Thyferra and wresting control of the Bacta supply away from Isaard was their best bet, and what did they do? Nothing. Wedge and his squadron had to defect and take care of it themselves. And let's not forget that their treatment of the Vong is VERY similar to current canon's NR treating the Imperial Remnant; the canon NR ignores the Remnant until it's too late, like the EU NR ignoring the Vong in favor of "maintaining the image of peace" until Coruscant had basically fallen.

And lets not forget the coup orchestrated by former imperial members against a hostile supreme chancellor who opted to use mandalorians to besiege the jedi. A coup that involved teaming up with an emergent faction of sith, cause that never goes wrong.
The EU NR definitely wasn't perfect, it suffered from many of the same failings as the old one by the time Disney started their continuity. But I do feel like it was at least a bit better than Disney's NR. At least they had the wisdom to not end the military and scrap all the imperial ships.

personally i prefer the canon that the new republic was too decentralized because people hated centralization after the empire, so the new republic was so weak, that it only took the destruction of a few seats of power for the new repulbic to fall apart completely, as the political power was barely there at all. it makes a lot of sense as people have a tendency to go to opposite extremes after times of stress which can be equally as bad. ask someone in the outer rim whether they prefered the empire or new republic and they will tell you that both situations had attacks and unsafety. whether its pirates attacking due to neglect or imperial troops, it changes little. at least the empire was honest and was very straight about not caring of the outer rim, and did take out some of the worst of the pirate problem, the new republic however acts like it cares so much about everyone and then does nothing about even the mid rim, let alone the outer reaches.
its not even the new republic's fault as many systems didn't even join the new republic because people became so distrustful of big government because of the empire. honestly i like that canon the most because it shows how opposite extremes can be just as destructive as the main problem in the first place.

I found the new environment, i.e. within a sci-fi city environment besides Coruscant, a very refreshing addition as we get to see other developed sci-fi cities on other worlds as the Star Wars galaxy is meant to be. I also found the noir detective and forensic aspects equally refreshing as it reminds me of the Jedi Temple bombing story arc.
I also enjoyed Season 3's deeper look into the criticisms and flaws of democracy when not properly balanced..... as seen with the flaws of the corrupt, bloated Galactic Republic and the New Republic which swung to the other extreme to the point of apparent complacency and incompetence or "burying their heads in the sand"(?).
Finally, seeing possible hints within this episode about how Din is going to fix IG-11 later in the story. I mean come on, that city has a lot of hints about getting the proper droid technicians/programmers and finding possible spare parts to fix IG-11 since we have droids dating back to the Separatist and Clone Wars eras.

I loved the details in this episode about the political situation in the Galaxy. It really bothered me that teh New Republic was presented as the same democratic monolith as the rpevious one and yet it fell so easily. It was also strange to me that the movements like the Separatists and Partitionnists didn't make a new decentralized system. The Mandalorian is giving us interesting details about how independant worlds are rising in the Outer Rim. The Galaxy has known in the last century a demographic shift that makes non authoritarian centralized galaxy wide government impossible. I hope that in the new movies 15 years after Exegol they at least explore that aspect of a Galaxy that is not united and partitionned into countless world governments, federations, empires. I don't have much expectations story wise but if they can at least expand the lore so we can over-analyse it.
Also ust a quick question about the Dooku fan commissioner. Did Luke ever make public the truth about the Empire and the Clone Wars? He had everything in Obi wan's diaries. He knows Dooku was a sith and Palapatine orchestrated the whole war. In a galaxy still reeling from the Clone War, it would be a useful thing to leak to challenge the legitimacy of the Empire. And also transparency and the right to know what the hell happened. The Resistance knew Palapatine was a Sith but did the whole Galaxy know this was all part of a thousands of years old religious War?
Finally will you do a video or a short on the Romeo and Juliet of the Star Wars Galaxy ?
"Two species, both alike in dignity,

So I would like to share an observation. I agree with Alan, it's not filler. It's all part of a bigger picture. What we're seeing is the beginning of a new Mandalorian empire. If you remember during the clone Wars, mandalor led a thousand independent systems. Now they have two. Navarro and the pleasure planet. And that ancient order of independent regency that grogo was knighted into, that's going to be his version of the Jedi order. Mark my words. They will be the royal guards of the new Empire led by Sir Grogu

well characters like c3po can feel pain and show discomfort at moving for long periods of time and he and others show signs of individual wants and desires, I'd say yes it is unethical to exploit them as they for the most part can feel pain and are capable of free thought, it is arguably worse than most think as in the clone wars the b1 droids often showed resentment towards their orders but could not abandon the war like clones could, now if owners wanted to be ethical without getting rid of droids they might remove the sensors inside droids that makes them "feel" pain you would have to monitor them more closely if they themselves don't feel anything wrong, or they would hire droids that have no
"individual thought" like the oom droids, more simple and capable of receiving commands

There's also a pretty blatant commentary on meritocracy & aristocracy with the situation of Bo-Katan. While she's both royal by blood and probably one of the best fighters in the galaxy... She really hasn't learned how to properly lead and unite people. But she's learning. At it's core, most forms of government are flawed by the fact that people are involved. As they say, "People suck." Collectively and individually we are definitely not infallible. And sometimes we are lucky if we get a second chance at it. The French have already tried 5 times.

The early Britons, before what we know as England had united into a single kingdom, practised a hybrid of aristocracy and meritocracy. It was a rare case where the throne or inherited positions would pass directly from father to son, but rather would step sideways to a younger brother or eldest nephew rather than their own son. This was because while someone had to be in "the family" to have the position, the most capable individual of the choices available would often be chosen by the nobility. When the son eventually became mature enough to lead then it may be their turn.

I personally wouldn't call plazir15 a true democracy. Direct democracy is by the people for the people (representatives are a non-direct democracy). The droids are part of the people. One day it's the ringing of the bells and the casting down of the evil tyrant, and the next it's everyone sitting around complaining that ever since the tyrant was overthrown no one's been taking out the trash. As a Brit, the reason why Brexit took so long was that the people who wanted it weren't in power. The referendum was a cynical promise that the ruling party had no intention of following through upon and expected to win the referendum for Remain, so they had no plans in place.
They then appointed a Remain voter to oversee the process, who immediately lost her majority, and was eventually booted out in disgrace, to be replaced by a Brexiteer. By this point 3 years had passed. A Brexiteer was appointed, but the parliament obstructed him, because the overwhelming majority of parliamentary MPs were against leaving the EU, causing the process to once again grind to a halt, resulting in the 2019 election, that the Brexiteers won in a landslide.
Being a mouth-breather, the Brexiteer PM BoJo then forced through a half-baked policy to get his party over the finish line (in name rather than in practice), and hoped that no one would notice the gaping holes in his plan. Now those short-sighted fudges are continuing to haunt the conservatives, who now seem to be adopting a policy of "actually let's sort-of rejoin the EU while pretending we're not".
The only people with a clear vision for Brexit, i.e. Farage, was shut out by the two party system and had no chance of implementing the changes he campaigned for.

I honestly doesn’t believe that the numerous US foreign involvments since WWII, let it be soft of militaristic was ever “in good faith”.
It was either fueled by ideological reasons (South American CIA involvments, Cuba, Vietnam etc) or purely money. (Lybia, Iraq and like every other place having oil).
The rise of authothatism, or we what we should call it in most cases, fascism has a load to do with the rise of fascism in thr US. As someone living in one of said states (Hungary) I’m too are very concerned.

I think the interesting thing about Plazir-15 is ...it really looked for all the world like our heroes were getting set up for a typical Lotus Eaters/secretly dystopian thing in that world, but it actually seems like a place with a largely well-meaning, comfortable, therefore generous and friendly populace and that was really OK to a point. They may have been subtler about the challenges of *direct democracy* ..possibly like we sometimes see about say California's rather expedient simple-majority binding referendums process. Which can easily be turned to bad things with lots of disinformation if people aren't paying enough attention, but also can mean well-intentioned people, over time, vote for two good things that may conflict with each other at least in the ways and means. It's kinda like people wanted to tidy up neighborhoods and improve property values, ended up voting in too much power for the busybody HOA's, people say they want a more comfy shopping area, the auto repair chains propose bills to close down their smaller competition or even driveway wrenching.
I do think where direct democracy might actually help would be about voting on desired *results* rather than necessarily proposed bills themselves. If you want to reduce CO2 emissions, don't ban any but factory-original parts (what major automakers and dealer markup beneficiaries love) ....even in older applications where improvements are cleaner, (side-effect, rashes of catalytic converter theft: at first it was for the metals, then quickly became a side-trade in selling dubious used parts to people when it's what they need to fix it after their cats got stolen....) .... test cars for what they actually *produce.*
When only a minority out of people understand a technology or issue or the people involved in something, that can make direct democracy, especially in a media-disinfo environment, somewhat problematic and *exploitable.* But there's a lot more that people really agree on than it seems when politics present it much more like a split-down-the-middle over partisan ideologies and such, especially in a 'both-sides' 'controversy-driven' opinion-based media. But if you ask simply, "Do you want equality and justice/nondiscrimination for racial and ethnic minorities, women and LGBT people?" vast majorities say *yes.* That may not be reflected in what people get elected do with the power and how it's proportioned and obtained even in our representative democracy.
Even a lot of thorny issues that become huge tugs-of-war between extremes could probably benefit from some more direct polling of the people on, "Is this OK?" "Is this OK?" "How bout this here?" If we did that about some things like what civilian arms Americans are comfortable with and what's 'too much'... I think we'd get some pretty coherent answers as opposed to trying to argue about tidy legalistic definitions and treating particular ideologies or extremes as 'the will of the people.'

Lots of Anti-Democracy Chuds are reading the episode's analysis of Democracy very incorrectly.
Democracy is a valuable system with an educated population. If you have a population that is uneducated, or largely susceptible to miseducation- _cough cough_ *America,* then your system can easily be undermined.
The lessons to learn, are that there are necessary safety barriers and education needed to keep ignorant or bad faith actors from causing long-lasting damage in governance.

What I loved about the episode is the “bright side” of the dystopian Star Wars universe.
What prosperity technology (even if in the form of used droids) can acomplish. Imagine all the resources of the galaxy going towards such goals instead of military founding or megalomaniac megaprojects or getting lost due to curruption. Imagine a few Dyson Spheares instead of the Death Stars.
The workers of the galaxy should really rise up...
