- The Children of the Watch have a bad rap, they're an offshoot of the controversial Death Watch organization and are described by many as an extreme cult. But in the most recent episode of the Mandalorian we're given a much closer glimpse at how this organization operates, and surprisingly found many positive things.

@@user-mh6dc2ok4h I think Din had respect for Paz, but I don't think it went both ways. Paz has taken every opportunity to give Din a hard time, but I think that will stop now.
I think once din was redeemed, all beef was gone, these are all fully devoted members of the watch, dins only transgression was breaking the creed, when he redeemed himself he restored his creed. I think Paz was probably a little salty about the first clan’s headquarters being wiped out and din breaking the creed kinda made it worse. But after he continued to follow the creed I think Paz saw how serious he was
@@MTBJJ2001 Paz challenged Din to a knife fight in the very first episode, before any of that happened. It was literally our first introduction to the character.
Honestly this episode has changed my view of them a lot.
That's why I love this channel so much. Having the humility to admit he was wrong in front of the audience shows something that makes sense. Good content like this can only come from good people
has been one of my go-to for Star Wars content for a half-decade now...regnited my passion and reminds me of many a late-night Denny "coffee talks" over Star Wars theories pre prequels.. all we had was the OGs and the "Legends"

but i disagree with concerns of things being pushed for political narrative. Lucas made a choice to dress the Imps as Nazis..because nazis are villains historically, used as a metaphor, and when i saw the movie as a child in 77,it was a diving board into my father to teach me more about WW2 and the Nazis and helped me process it. I see it as a tool , not the weapons critics of the "woke" culture. just my 2 cents, nothing more...

Agreed, He has the wisdom to admit when he is wrong and work to correct his mistakes. This is the key difference between boys and men or women and ladies.
I find it interesting that they know Din has the Dark Saber, yet no one after his reinstatement to the creed. Has tried to take the Dark Saber or pushed him to wield it to rally the people yet.
It’s as if they are waiting for the leaders within the group to take up their positions themselves, gradually. No one seems to be getting ahead of themselves over the Saber or the feats that Any one Mandalorian has made. The Armorer seems to be the one they all eventually turn toward when they want to make a move in life, being methodical most of the way. A far cry from the Mandalorians of previous shows or continuity
They say they follow the "old ways" so probably the ways of the mandalorians from 800-200BBY. They live isolated from others and rather peaceful and at the same time the get so easily beaten by some animals. They should at least pick a place where they wont lose members to the wildlife so easily.
There is also something to be said about how Din, the owner of the Darksaber bows to the Armorer, further cementing her place at the top of the Mandalorian hierarchy.
It honestly seems like a stupid thing to rally behind, but it’s sphess Excalibur so there’s that.
I think Paz Vizsla only tried to take the Darksaber because it was considered an ancestral relic of his Clan, and his "right by blood," so to speak. Note, in the scene where Grogu trains against Vizsla's son, Vizsla does not speak, until he repeats the line "those who do not know, do not speak." He trusted Din as a judge of character and strength. Despite the idea of his blood right, he is still an honorable warrior, not a sore loser. However, if someone else ever gains the Darksaber besides Din, I have little doubt that Paz Vizsla will challenge for it because that person will not have defeated him in the challenge.
@@ravenRedwake The thing is, it wasn't at first. It was considered a relic of House Vizsla, until Sabine Wren (Clan Wren is a part of House Vizsla, sort of a subdivision) gave it away to Bo-Katan Kryze. Or perhaps it became a symbol of the leader of Mandalore when Maul justified his rule with it.
Point is, the Kryze family is implied to have ruled for a long time (and followed their version of the Creed, with the exception of Bo-Katan's sister/Obi-Wan's love interest Duchess Satine) without needing the Darksaber. It was considered an inherited relic of the Vizsla line because it was made by the greatest member of House Vizsla in history, not some sort of occult relic of the leader of Mandalore. It's even presented that way in _Rebels_ at first IIRC, that if Sabine Wren was properly trained to wield the Darksaber, as a member of House Vizsla, she could unite the disparate factions of House Vizsla, the second most powerful Mandalorian House behind Kryze.
Mandalorians in the clone wars really gave off the Samurai/way of the warrior vibe - everything was about victory, glory and honor. Risk of death didn't seem to matter, and "honor" was just ego and greed. Beliefs were inconsistent and they did what they needed to do to gain power, the ends justified the means. But this new episode changes things. The extreme traditions are still there, but now it's followed consistently. True warrior code instead of warlord's convenience.
As much as this channel is a Star Wars channel. I feel like Alan uses it as a way to teach us life lessons as well.
Yup, he has great points and is pretty wise. My daughter is 12 and still doesn't have access to a phone, UA-cam or any social media. On paper social media is fine, it's a way to stay connected to family and friends sharing memories, however it's not used that way the majority of the time. I wouldn't drop my daughter off in some dangerous neighborhood and that's exactly what the internet is for a child. So many parents just don't care, they think they're being friends with their children, instead they're creating disrespectful entitled sensitive brats that instantly conform to any trend. Our future is far from bright at this rate.
I learned more about the nature of politics from this channel than I did in school, because it's put in a way that actually holds my interest.

This is the Way.
Children of the Watch have simple guidelines and rules:
1. Never take your helmet off in front of another living being.
2. Raise your foundling to become an apprentice and later a real Mandalorian.
3. Stay loyal to one another and work together as a family.
The number one rule of never taking off your helmet is instrumental. This allows many new recruits, including adults, to keep their identity safe as well as their loved ones or family members across the Galaxy safe allowing better anonymity from enemies.
There are no restrictions to how the foundlings or apprentices should be raised. I mean the Watch's Mandalorians can even allow their foundlings or apprentices to attend normal schools if they desire but they cannot remove their helmets in front of other living beings. An example would be how there is no restriction for Grogu to also learn from Luke in understanding the Force and wielding a lightsaber.
The Mandalorians in the Children of the Watch also can remain as warriors who answer to no one (aside from getting advice from seniors like the Armorer). They take normal mercenary jobs or jobs that require police or security work that does not involve killing innocents but hunting other criminals for money like bounty hunters.
The Children of the Watch allow members to leave the group. The Armorer told Bo-Katan that she can leave whenever she wants but, for now, she is one of them.
Overall, the Children of the Watch is a more simple organization who lives simple lives as honorable warriors like Hedge Knights. Hedge Knights are wandering knights who make a living lending their swords to those in need with no true political affiliation.
The Star Wars tv series is teaching us how we don't need to rely too much on political governments for protection and survival but that we need each other, as a community, to have a proper, peaceful life with no oppression. Examples would include independent systems and worlds that do not need the Empire or the Republic for protection, security, and guidance on how to live their lives. The Republic has grown outdated. In my opinion, a Galactic Alliance is more suitable.

I got the same impression. If Din was raised by the Children of the Watch, and he turned out to be a stand-up guy, maybe they aren't so crazy after all...
Honestly I think the Children of the Watch should switch their base to a safer planet. Two beasts almost killed one of their own twice. If they wish to preserve their culture. They should at least keep the next generation safe from harm until they’re ready to survive and explore the galaxy on their own.
@@kingnamor7777 Maybe their thinking the planets so dangerous that nobody would think of looking for them here. They are relying on their fighting prowess to keep them safe. And maybe use the planet to weed out the weak.
@@kingnamor7777 Mandalorians are warriors. The planet Mandalore used to be home to the most dangerous beasts that the Galaxy cannot imagine. Living on a planet with dangerous creatures that can kill you is a classic Mandalorian move.
Mandalorians are like: "I will rather die as a warrior and be killed by another badass warrior or beast rather than die of old age on a bed". This is similar to how Vikings and many warriors would believe.
Great job Alan (Allen?)...as a 74 year old Grandpa Boomer I was struck by your analysis...I have often reflected on my role as a Grandpa especially one that lives far away from all my grandkids and have come to a similar conclusion that my main role is as a mentor... also to love unconditionally. I like what you said about leaders with ambition. In the new Thrawn books, there are several instances where he is convinced to keep rising up the chain of the command for good reasons. He tells Eli he will become an Admiral so he can right the wrongs of the ways Eli was treated. He was persuaded to taking the 7th fleet because another commander would not be as adverse to collateral damage as he is.

As a religious person, I too hate hypocrites. I do my best to stay logically consistent for that reason

As a former special operations Marine,I see similarities between the mindset of spec ops and the CoW. Both stick to rigid traditions but flexible enough to adopt new techniques/strategies
The dogmatism and refusal to take off their helmet makes me think of penance and remorse, as well as mourning. I have the feeling that the helmets are coming off when they feel redeemed. Perhaps after one of them tames the mythosaur, or something like that.
I feel like the helmet thing is more about how Mandalorians are not one race but rather one people, the fact that you can't really tell if someone is an Alien or not easily makes everyone not be as prejudiced as other people in the galaxy, Mandalorians will welcome anyone so long as they walk the way of the Mandalore.
In the Old Republic times the Mandalorians would actually recruit anyone into the ranks of the Mandalorians, I feel like not taking off your helmet helps create a unified Mandalorian identity through the iconic appearance of their armor, you see someone with Mandalorian style armor and you think Mandalorian and not Human, or Zabrak, or Wookie, you think Mandalorian, and it is because Mandalorians don't take off that armor that it create a mystique around that armor.
Frankly speaking we don't even know if the armorer is an alien or not, me and my friends believe she might be Zabrak but at the end of the day she never takes off her helmet so does it really matter?
She is the armourer and she is Mandalorian and that is all that matters.
It is also a shared sacrifice in order to unite them

The most nuanced take on this season I've seen on UA-cam. While everyone else is screaming that the "cult" is crazy and the story hinges on Din learning to take his stanky helmet off, you're the first person I've seen to, imho, correctly say it's about Bo learning to keep hers on.
Great episode, you made some great points about not shitting on the younger generations coming up behind us. I think some of this aggression comes from jealously or that each generation has access to greater knowledge or the advancements in technology that makes life easier. Each generation feels threaten by the one coming up behind it. Each generation gain prominence as their influence grows. You hit the nail on the head when you mention society isn't focused on preparing the next generation for the future. We have become a very self-centered society looking only out for themselves and to hell with everyone else.
Watch Grogu’s first word be “Allen” and you’ll feel bad about calling him Gogurt. Not as bad as all those people who were cruel to Jar Jar online, but bad.

Ep.4 might be my favorite episode thus far this season, but man, that runtime... I've taken cigarette breaks at work that feel longer.
We're halfway through the season and have only had around 2 1/2 hours of show. That just ain't good enough, Bob! We pay GOOD MONEY for our Disney+ subscriptions, and a LOT of ppl signed up specifically for this show.

A lot of people seem to see Din's tribe as "religious extremists," but it seems clear to me that they're more like the Star Wars equivalent of Orthodox Jews -- a community that clings to restrictive and idiosyncratic traditions (including never taking off their headgear) because they are exiled from their homeland and facing extermination. As you say, a lot of their choices seem quite rational in that context. Even the decision to settle on this very inhospitable planet makes sense if their goal is to be left alone to survive.
The Mandalorians will return to their homeworld of Mandalore and restore their great nation.
Then they'll start oppressing the Alamites, drive them out into the wastelands, build a wall to keep them out, take away their homes, build settlements inside their lands etc because well, all of Mandalore was promised to them according to...the Book of the Way of the Mandalore or something.
Compassion coming from this group opens them up for more development. Since people want to know who the armorer is, maybe something will happen to the armorer to add more to her character. Maybe something happens, her helmet comes off and Bo katan sees who it is. She can be emotional and irrational temporarily by having her identity exposed, connecting her to the mauldaloroans. In the end just as the armorer forgave Bo, Bo will forgive her in turn. This is all wishful thinking though.

I liked how she treated Grogu, she was gentile but firm with him, teaching the orthodoxy to him but in a nurturing manner, but staying in character.
This episode "The Foundling" has so many parallels to Native American lore.
Right after the episode title, Bo Katan ship flies in front of a strange looking rock formation. This is an actual rock formation, which is a very sacred place for my clan.
A Monster Bird grabs our people and flies on top of this rock and feeds her babies.
Once the Monster Bird is defeated, her babies become sacred birds that helps our people gain redemption for our past transgressions.
Like the Mandalore, we have traditional Native Americans and non-traditional. However, working together we overcome adversity and are reborn again.
I Din Jarin and Bo Katan both working together to reunite the warrior clans. Similar to the Warrior Twins (Monster Slayers) reuniting our clans.
For me, it was like watching my people's lore. Each Mandalorian has different war colors (war paint) different symbols that represent our different clans.

There is a relevant theme in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Gandalf mentions that the Kingdom of Gondor was more focused on it current glory, as the kings and lords built halls and monuments to themselves and their ancestors, while not looking towards the future. Thus, the "line of kings failed", and the kingdom was given over to "lesser men". When a culture focuses on the now, and not raising the next generation, it is sowing the seeds of collapse.
Mandalorian culture is so similar to that of Sparta here on earth training children to be soldiers at a young age in order to win glory for the state .
Can't wait to see some Mando Sparta kicks.
Admitting he was wrong, willing to learn why and adapt, and then share that reason with us instead of letting us believe the previous information without the full story just upped my respect for Allen.
Someone who's honest, humble, willing to admit then they're wrong, own up to the consequences of it, learn from it, and teach from it while respecting the intelligence of others are key traits in what makes someone a good leader or a good role model. Respect is earned. You don't get it only by holding up the biggest gun. You get respect by giving it.
Im glad you were able to put those biases aside and see them in a new light! As someone who loved Mandalorians in Clone Wars and what I could read from Legends, I adored the children of the watch since season 1, at first they could seem like dogmatic assholes, but the way Din acted around others made me believe that he couldn't have been raised by an asshole society. He was empathetic, kind and headstrong after all, not things we know Mandalorians (aside Sabine) for. And then we see that they actually died for Grogu, and the armorer didn't care he was a jedi foundling, she still told Din he was as his father and gave him his quest. That showed me they treated people as individuals and not judged them for their origins, something I find fascinating (Pre Viszla must have been dying a second time after seeing these mandalorians die for a jedi lmao).
And now they're showing the same openness with how accepting they're with Bo, despite the Armorer calling her someone who tried to rule by blood right and the dark saber. All in contrast with the nite owls who ditched Bo with no qualms.
It's sad that people hate them because of the helmet rule, it sucks but reminds me a bit to the hate some religions get for choosing to conceal a part of themselves, as if there's something wrong with that, Im of the opinion that if it's a choice to live a certain way, it should be respected so long it doesnt affect others. And if we are fair, the creed is what has kept them alive, it's natural that they adhere to it so strongly.
They're what the death watch could have been had they not being led by an asshole like Vizsla (and I still think their organization predates death watch, being the warriors who were exiled to Concordia moon, DW were just the military faction of them that Viszla led. And I think this because Din was rescued in the Clone Wars and he had to be taken somewhere Mandalorians didn't take their helmets off, so these factions must have existed already)

I can't buy that. It wouldn't make any sense for Death Watch to be an arm of the children.
For starters they take their helmets off WAY too often.
It's more likely they broke off after Maul got the dark Saber, but before the fall of Mandalor. Probably because Maul got the Dark Saber as well.
They likely became like we see them as a reaction to everything that happened after Maul became their ruler.
They had a series of nontraditionalist leaders and it ended in ruin. The most logical reaction from an ultra conservative group such as that would be to reassert what they see as proper tradition to prevent it from happening again

@@nicholashodges201 i think factions like these existed pre DW, but not necessarily as children of the watch, just as some religious mandalorians who were among the warriors exiled to Concordia, who as you said saw what happened with DW and Maul and decided to not participate anymore, maybe they called themselves the watch and thus the current ones we see are "children" of the watch. I mostly say this because of Din, had he been rescued in the imperial era it'd be a different story, but it was definitely during the clone wars
@@Yamineftis you can't really go by that. The only thing we see of Din's childhood is him getting picked up off of an active battlefield.
We don't know if they were the "Children of the Watch or not, nor do we know if they were ultratraditionalist yet or not.
For all we know the Smith is a Jim Jones/Charles Manson type that assumed control over the children around the time of Endor.
Or they could be the descendents of Mandalor the Great's privy council.
When you speculate and grasp straws you get nowhere. You've got to restrict yourself to what little we know and keep speculation to a minimum.
We know they're ultra conservative and that they are an offshoot of Death Watch. That's IT. Everything else is just head canon

There is no words too how much I relate too the last 5-7 minutes of this video. You worded and presented these veiws very well. I love Star Wars because it hits these deep notions and topics that is hard too comprehend in the real word. Fantastically worded can’t wait too see more videos!
We need to protect this man. Why is he not doing ted talks? That speech at the end was so moving and motivating and empowering.
After last night's episode I really had a similar thought. These ppl are just looking out for one another. They actually have a better chance of being mandalorians together than the rest of the groups that splinter away from each other.
this is how I wish everyone would see them, it seems like all it took was bo katan saying the C word for the entire community to deem the children bad and old fashioned and that din needs to leave their silly little rules behind, when all we've ever seen them do was be extremely loyal and protective of to one another and ask that you follow a few simple rules (idk why so many people get hung up on the helmet thing do yall really want to see Pedro Pascal's face that badly?) the whole idea of this group is so cool and it's one of the reasons I originally fell in love with this show so to see everyone want him to break away from that just so he can become another generic helmeted sharpshooter really frustrates me
We attach a lot of meaning to the term cult, understandably, beyond its strict definition.
Not gonna lie I like it better when characters keep their headgear on, I watch the Red vs Blue series as it was being made and that series for the longest time was just helmets bobbing up and down or moving in ways to portray characters talking and emoting, there is alot you can do with helmet "acting".
Building on from this its just practical, one things that annoyed me is how Bo kept putting her helmet on and taking it off while in the ruins of Mandolore, this was a situation that not having head protection can lead to someone getting killed, especially in a combat situation.
@Zeratul____12 I agree, as much as I love temura Morrison it annoyed me how much he took his helmet off in book of boba fett and same feeling for that power rangers movie from a few years back
@Doradexplora to me it just sounds like people are making assumptions based on the opinion of one person who, might I add, probably isn't the most unbiased source of information on the matter, all things considered

Thanks for your videos! I found this channel last year and really fell in love with your content. Showing that you can be wrong too is something that makes me like you and your channel even more as it shows that mistakes happen and they are human.

I think it's fascinating that while the armorer is undoubtedly the leader of the COW, the title she takes up is The title of The Armorer focuses on what unites mandalorians, and she draws authority from that instead of her own strength.
I still find the idea of never taking off your helmet stupid, but I can understand the points you are bringing up. But this way I feel will only work with small groups, maybe a few clan but not an entire planet/galaxy wide people.
This man needs more than a million subs, seriously. He's wisdom incarnate.
The problem is that the older generation always wants to be the tortured past. The problem is when that you have an older generation that endured no hardship, then all they do is torture their children.
The helmets also hide the dwindling numbers when you cant tell them apart and the limit contact its hard to tell how many there are

I suspected at the time of watching this episode that there was much more going on than a straightforward rescue story. It is, as you say, in the end more about a people learning to change to survive. To remain spiritual and well-focused when so much has been lost. Nice, honest, analysis.

While I've always loved your channel, it has easily become one of my favorites these past few years. In terms of the Mandalorian, I like your new viewpoint of the Children of the Watch, and I wholeheartedly agree with your view of how they operate! There's really more to them than we thought (or at least most of us, me included, could see).
As for that little talk about generations, I cannot state how much I appreciate you saying it. It seems like it's an endless circle of blaming the new generation for problems, or rather only seeing their faults and things you don't like about it. Instead, I really think that we should care for generations that come after ours and teach them to be better. Prepare them for what is to come for them as best we can. According to me: the Mandalorian is the Best Anti-Hero I’ve ever come across, and who I have learned to admire, adore, and acquiesce to, whereas usually, my first reaction would be to judge negatively because it was something I didn’t initially understand. And I believe they have done a great job with this series exploring this same concept as it applies in our society.

At a point in my life when I can’t seem to enjoy Star Wars the way I used to, this channel has become a bit of a light for me by giving me a new way to enjoy the Star Wars story without grueling through the shows

As parents it’s our job to instill the lessons we’ve learned throughout our experiences into our children, along with morality and ethics. They will then use what they’ve learned combined with their own experiences and pay it forward.
MUCH better review than other channels have put out in response to Ep 4. I thought that outside of some poor effects and short runtime, this episode did a great job at story building. It seems we're getting more and more into this practice of hitting a couple big episodes up front for wow factor, followed by a lull with boring storyline and arc-building with a GRAND ending that spans a couple episodes to wrap the season. I think the more people come to understand this format, we'll hear less bitching when their expectations aren't fully met. I have to say of the Star wars content creators I really like this channel the best because of how thoughtful and nuanced the approach is to the philosophical, political, social, economic and historical aspects of the universe and their connection to their real-world inspirations. This doesn't just feel like Star wars this feels like something deeper and that's why I keep coming back to this channel
I think this might be my favorite concept for the Mando's.

This, is probably why the bulk of the surviving mandalorians not only flipped the Bokatan and the watch the bird. But is probably why those survivors would cozy up to somebody else in mandalorian society. Preferably someone who carried on Shae's ideals and with a strong power base. With a logical choice being Cal Scarada.

I just notice the flag that the clan has with the kid taking the oath is the reed of sign of the fetts.
This episode ranks right up there (imo) with "The Believer" - the one with Mayfeld (played by Bill Burr) and that whole stormtrooper situation.
They're both good episodes but they shape the show in a way you weren't expecting it to go. They give us insight into topics we've never seen the other side of before.
That said, the first 3 episodes seemed... chaotic. they were all over the place and it was at times I was asking myself "what story are they trying to tell here?" and I think - or at least hope - that this "Is the way" they're going with it.
I'm just happy Bo Katan is turning a new leaf and trying to understand these people which by now she never really knew about.

This was a really good video all around. I liked the subtle point of overlaying sequel footage and then prequel footage while talking about older generations holding younger generations to unrealistic standards. The commentary on religion and spiritually was on point as well.

I'm not going to lie, I thought season two's ending was the perfect ending for this show. It was a fun Star Wars western romp with a lone hero and a kid. The mission was to keep the kid safe and then find his people. Season two did that, gave a beautiful ending; it was great. It was a let down to see Grogu reunite with Mando in Book of Boba Fett. Like Chewy being alive in Rise of Skywalker, it was the best decision, but couldn't you let that story beat have a little more meaning? I was skeptical about a season three, until the end of the second episode. And now, I'm all in again. This is a great new direction, I'm loving the fleshing out of the Children of the Watch and the 'outsider looking in' perspective we're getting through the "converted" Bo Katan. It's great device to help to humanize the dogmatic group which seemed more antagonistic to our heroes. It's a cool not quite soft reboot... ultra-plush reboot?... it's a neat new direction I didn't see coming.
From Feloni's statements about Grogu there is a slight chance that there will be an in-canon reboot of the timeline. Expunging the Sequel trilogy.
Fingers crossed.
i think a far more healthy approach to the helmet rule would be:
- never remove your helmet before anybody.
- the only exception lies in your closest bonds (your children, partner or bloodbrother) in the creed that have sworn silence and those of the creed dying in honor. they are worthy of the being that wields the armor.
- when disguise is the only way to protect the creed, one may remove ones armor as you are then not representing yourself of the creed. if the disguise becomes your self, you are no longer of the creed.
- the administration of healing sets the room of the medic as the armor the mandalorian fights in. so he is never unarmored when fighting death itself and can use all weapons the medic can grant him.
- bathing, sleep and helmet repair, as rituals of maintainace, can be partaken within the creed but never solemly observed.
this may be my favorite video you have ever done.

New media isn’t going into the isolated clans enough… there are several planets that have limited but fairly influential mandalorian presence. Wish they would go into detail on these and also mandalorian ship building.
I really apprecitate the conversations we have about humanity here. respect for being able to admit to being human. and as a Mill, I like Gen Z. cause they are really going for one of the movements i was in when it "began" and i think they will do amazing things. you have a great point with all of this.
