  • eBike motors go through a lot for us, we plough down chattery trails and tackle steep climbs and they always provide the power when needed. Although it's not an easy life for eMTB motors there is hope! What if we told you there is a way to make your motor last longer and run quieter? Well... there is, Steve Jones is at the eBike Motor Centre learning how they service motors and install the upgrades they've come up with.

    In a time when the bike industry is suffering as we all have less spare cash to buy the shiny new expensive models and instead we want to keep our older and beloved bikes going longer this is brilliant. Like with third party companies making parts for cars we need this 'repair rather than dump' ecosystem to expand in the emtb world. And the bike industry needs to take note and make it easier for third party companies to do this to the motors rather than landfill. More of this content please EMBN! Time as well maybe to do some more films on the home kit build area like that engineer fella who built up his own bikes in Wales you covered a while back - and see what are the new developments going on there with any new motors, batteries etc.

    I had my 2019 levo motor this upgrade carried out there after the 4 year warranty expired. I was one of the lucky owners that didn't have a motor fail throughout the preceding time. I took the motor in myself and collected when ready, which turned out to be quicker than initially advised. I chose to have it carried out for preventative reasons after watching some of the eBike Motor Centre's own videos on this upgrade. When I collected the motor it was returned to me by the owner of the company, Pete Collard.
    I was/am extremely impressed with the whole experience and setup and certainly enjoyed to last bit of the journey in through part of The New Forest

  • @Almajtek
    @Almajtek 26 днів тому +16

    Pete did an excellent job with the mechanical restoration of the motor, which is easy to maintain as long as we have access to outsourced spare parts. However, the most critical and challenging aspect to maintain or replace is the motor controller and other electronics housed within the motor case. These components are proprietary, and if the manufacturer decides to discontinue production or stop selling spare parts, we are left with a non-functional motor. This practice should be prohibited, but unfortunately, we consumers have allowed it.
    My recommendation, which is our only viable option, is to purchase a second motor for spare parts. Additionally, it's crucial to identify the types of SMDs used on the PCB and secure any available components for future PCB repairs. To enhance the controller's protection, apply a high-performance waterproof conformal coating, such as silicone or ceramic, and use a superhydrophobic coating on the PCB and inside the motor case. This will significantly improve the water resistance and extend the overall lifespan of the motor.
    Please remember this: while mechanical parts are easy to replace and maintain, proprietary electronics are NOT.

    • @robhaskins3068
      @robhaskins3068 26 днів тому +1

      Yes very true. I did have a spare rebuilt motor for 2 years but when I finally fitted it went to 93⁰c in 2.5 km with little power. Something definitely wrong with the windings .Mechanical it was fine. My idea to keep the moisture out is to fit a mini computer fan to provide positive air flow from a breather up at the steering head and add a bag of moisture attracting crystals .

    • @Almajtek
      @Almajtek 25 днів тому +1

      @@robhaskins3068 how bout to have a humidity sensor inside the motor? they are really small, for example i use the "Aeotec - 6 in 1 Multisensor" you have a heat sensor, humidity sensor, fire sensor, smoke sensor, motion sensor, light sensor, and vibration sensor.
      also a good idea would be using a small pump (button that you press with your thumb) to can generate positive pressure inside the motor case.

    • @robhaskins3068
      @robhaskins3068 25 днів тому +1

      @@Almajtek Humidity sensor would be a great idea as you or it could turn on a fan to dry the moisture before the bearings go rusty. It's not the electric motor but the bearings that are the problem. Circuit boards should be available as spare parts. Replacing a belt on a Brose is incredibly easy. Thousands of brose motors have been thrown out simply with broken belts. Sprag bearings are always going to give trouble from massive forces from big pedal strikes. It's like smashing the end of the crank arm with a massive sledgehammer. I recommend 150mm (shorter )cranks and 170mm Fox 38's forks with 29x3.0 front tyre and a 27.5 x3.0 or even 3.25 rear tyre .This gives great ground clearance and brilliant smooth fast ride through the rock gardens and is much easier on your body. It's a bit like when someone first rides a Emtb. It's a revelation but the tribe mentally will not be prepared to try it. E=Mtb²

    The original Brose in my 2019 Levo was replaced under warranty after it became VERY noisy. That was about 4 years ago. Last autumn, the replacement Brose exhibited most of the failing sprag clutch symptoms. The bike was barely ridable. I had the motor rebuilt with upgraded parts by eBike Motor Centre's United States affiliate. It was very expensive, about the same as buying a new motor, but my hope is that my rebuilt/upgraded motor will last longer than a new one.

    Fantastic video, thank You! I just have a few questions: If the planetary gears or something inside that hole (bearing, gear, rotor) fails in a Brose motor, that means it must have a new case with the electric motor and planetary gear? What is the best grease for the planetary gears to be the most silent? When You torque the belt tensioner screw, You only torque it once with 0,2 Nn , or (this is how i do) i spin the spider schaft backwards than i re torque the screw with 0,2 Nm once more, and the screw turns like another half turn? Thank You very much! (a Specialized bike fan :)

    • @Ebikemotorcentre
      @Ebikemotorcentre 26 днів тому +5

      We have developed a tool to change the planetary gear, so this part is now totally repairable, without changing the case or ECU. We use Molykote EM50-L on the planetary gears, it's much quieter than the original grease. I used to back the motor off and re-tension the belt, but we found the planetary gear support bearing was failing prematurely, so we now torque the belt exactly the same as it is done in the factory. I hope this answers your questions.

      Lucky you. I've got an 9 month old Kona Remote, admittedly with an older E7000 motor but in UK conditions it failed after 460 miles. Its never been jet washed and never been carried on a car (driving rain into it) but it failed due to water ingress and the bearings going as a result. Pretty hard to avoid water during the last 8 or 9 months in the UK.....
      Agree though, the lack of protection for water is absolutely mind blowing.

      @dirtyoffroader2093 26 днів тому +11

      I agree, E-Motor manufacturers are producing inferior products, and bike manufacturers don't seem to care and still use them. It's crazy how people don't kick up more of a fuss about it. If an off-road motorcycle engine was letting in water the company would be ruined over night.

    • @mauriceperry2165
      @mauriceperry2165 26 днів тому +5

      The crazy thing is when its debated on forums or YT like this there are always comments about it being new technology, how water protection isn't as important in road bike motors etc and excuses made. But it's not exactly a new issue, it's not really being addressed either as more and more manufacturers keep developing motors which are either more powerful or lighter, rather than more reliable.

    It’s a shame that the manufacturers couldn’t take the time and effort that the team at the Ebike Motor Centre do in upgrading and making a good product better and ‘fit for purpose’. As Steve points out on a few of these videos - you can be reassured that your motor is repairable but more importantly, at a reasonable cost compared with any other area from drive systems through to forks 😎

Peter is in the business of repairing mountain bike motors as OEM's appear not use 'O'rings to seal shafts. What's a $2 lawnmower belt doing in that gearbox? Wonder why these units don't have a tap on them to let the water out, hopefully used before the guarantee runs out?

But we are working on it.
