  • @shingnosis
    @shingnosis 3 роки тому +3

    All these eMTB motors should have old school tractor grease nipples. Wherever there is a bearing you're then able to push new fresh grease in and your can push old grease and dirt out. The "outer outer" seal is an easy replacement part and you change it maybe every 2 years. Behind the "grease seal" you then have some SKF sealed load carrying bearings (full units, no direct axle contact) and they will in no way shape or form be able to come into contact with water or dirt. That design on the Brose motor with the needle bearings against the axle and poor seals is honestly 100% shit. Hard to believe something like that came out of a 26000 employee 100 year old German company.

    • @Ebikemotorcentre
      @Ebikemotorcentre  2 роки тому +2

      The belt was upgraded in the year 2020, it has now been upgraded again in 2022. If the belt is a carbon belt, it should be lubricated "greased up" with "technical Vaseline" This will not be true for the new Polymer belts, but you won't be seeing these just yet.

I wish I could send it to performance line bearings instead of brose fixing or switching it.. also I wish if I did send it to PLB that they would make the belt stronger and the tensioner stronger so it doesn't happen every fucking year.. Hello Peter. I made some comments about a year ago. After 4 years of owning and a lot of Emtb riding including beach exploring water ingress mainly from washing is the killer. My conclusion is all ebike motors need a tiny computer fan within the main frame to slightly pressurise the casing while riding and washing to repel moisture and even dry out any moisture sucked in by heating and cooling. It's the only solution to the problem but are any of the motor companies smart enough to see this or are they too preoccupied with developing more problematic motors and rushing them out without proper reliability testing. What did Brose know in 2018 with the Near SILENT ,powerful 90nm ,smooth Aluminium 1.3 motor that they don't know now 🤔. Add your X rings, upgraded sprag bearing ,belt and firmware and hose vents with a mini fan you couldn't get better. But what would I know. Cheers Rob Haskins E=Mtb²
    RELIABILITY and SILENCE are GOLDEN.

    • @Ebikemotorcentre
      @Ebikemotorcentre  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Rob, We did look at this positive air pressure solution some time ago, but after some debate decided to drop the idea in regards of a retrospective kit. We also found that after 3 years now, we have had no Brose motors back with water ingress! We seemed to have managed the impossible, 4 layers of sealing, with almost zero added friction!

      @@Ebikemotorcentre Thanks for the reply I'm impressed that you replied to a comment on a old video.
      Glad to hear the X rings and other sealing is working. Your Australian agent Paul Moir has rebuilt a 2018 1.3 motor for me and all good so far. We have two brose 2018 levo's one 2020 levo and a 2018 shimano E8000 Merida. I have also hired Bosch and lightweight Orbea Rise carbon with 60nm shimano Ep8 but the bottom line is that when I go back to the 2018 Levo the motor is simply the best 👌 ever. Near SILENT, powerful, smooth and the FEELING is "it's me but younger and faster" and now you've been able to add reliability it's even better. Again What did they know in 2018 that they all don't know now.?
      At 61 kg and 67 years I prefer a heavier bike for Stability and not really interested in a lightweight emtb for Flickability .
      If carbon was any good they would make aluminium from it and if aluminium was any good they would make steel from it. 😁😁 Just a few of my Observations and not necessarily right .Cheers Rob E=Mtb²

      There is definitely an advantage in sending a motor to us, or one of our worldwide partners because then it can then be upgraded to help stop some of these issues. And we also apply our own 12 month warranty. These motors are not really designed to be stripped and inspected on a regular basis, so this is best done externally by getting to know how your motor feels and sounds when it's new. This is done by removing the chain from the front chainring and rotating the crankshaft by hand, if the crankshaft starts to feel tighter or sound rough etc. then it's time to get it looked at. Prices and explanations can be found here: www.ebikemotorcentre.com/repair-overhaul-service/

    • @Ebikemotorcentre
      @Ebikemotorcentre  3 роки тому +1

      Great question! We test a great many motors here and the noise can vary from totally silent to quite annoying. The noise usually comes from the planetary gear area and is usually just a manufacturing issue. Sometimes a moulding issue, sometimes a bad bearing from new etc. Some of the early S-Mag motors had an issue where the belt would rub on the motor housing inside. We can now replace this end of the motor, but it is an expensive and risky operation. Not really recommended.

    Hi, I bought a 2021 Levo HT 2 months ago, my son borrowed my bike today and on his return I noticed paint missing on the drive side crank arm end near the pedal, he told me that it happened while he was walking the bike over some rocky terrain, now when I back pedal the bike I noticed a slight rough sound where previously my bike had been completely silent back pedalling, do you think I should have this looked at by my local specialized shop as it sounds to me that I might have damaged sprag bearings, although you mention in this video that my 2021 model has been upgraded already? So maybe its water ingress on the needle roller bearing as I do not have any issue pedalling forward and everything is perfectly smooth riding the bike. I have been using the bike in very wet conditions and have washed the bike over 6 times now but always careful with low pressure hose. Any advice would be great appreciated with what bearing you think might be causing the sound. regards, Paul.

    • @Ebikemotorcentre

      Firstly, I don't think this is anything your son has done. This sounds typical of needle roller bearing failure due to water ingress, you should be entitled to a new motor under warranty. Although your motor is 2021 the new type sprag bearings can still fail, but you won't feel this by turning the cranks, you just won't move forward so think these are fine.

    • @Ebikemotorcentre

      When I made this video, I did not want to point out any weakness of any one motor. These are very early years in the eBike world, and ALL motors have their week points and issues.
      I am not defending the motor manufacturers, but don't lose sight that these motors were originally designed for the European road bike market. As a road bike motor they don't tend to suffer repeated pedal strikes, pressure washers, deep water, mud, grit, bull dust, 30 ft jumps, rocks, tree roots, etc. etc.
      I believe it was the bike manufacturers that started using them in mtb's when Moustache first fitted a Bosch classic into one of their mountain bikes. I don’t say that the motor manufacturers were not to blame as they would not be blind to the fact their motors were being fitted to mtb’s. But, in manufacturing terms, this only happened yesterday. To scrap a product run before it has started paying you back is not great business sense. To fit a seal that creates friction and makes your bike look bad on battery range against your competitor is also commercial suicide. Any sizable company with due diligence will normally spend 4 to 5 years before releasing millions of new motors all over the world too. (I know, I used to be involved in this process).
      There are a million and one other things to consider but my one finger typing skills don't afford me the time to discuss everything. Please rest assured, the manufacturers are aware, and they are working on it. Change is coming and I will probably be out of business in the near future.
      Also helps to know there are millions of motors out there working happily after thousands and thousands of miles…
      Remember when you would get off your normal bike and carry it through the mud because you could no longer pedal the thing! And now you use your eBike as a tractor. I know, I do the same and its great fun, but I bet the manufacturers never saw things like that coming!

      This is a scenario that we have thought about many times, even to the point of considering fitting a small air pump to keep positive pressure in the motor. But that would just consume power and may introduce damp air into a sealed system. I feel that with the limited space and small air quantity within a motor, coupled with the relatively low temperatures they run at and brief period of time they should be submerged for (not that they should be submerged at all), pressure differential issues should not be a big issue. We are still looking at this scenario though and when I have time I will heat a motor and drop it in the sink for a few seconds, just to see.

And the engineers should have known that the plastic housing/spacers on the sprag bearing were an obvious item that would fail under the loads of an eBike! Also we have our own Brose, Yamaha, Bosch and Impulse test bikes to do our own work. Please remember, we do not state that this motor is "waterproof". To water proof these motors would create too much friction. We have used a solution that causes absolute minimal drag or friction and helps with keeping a majority of water out. What about using sealer on the gasket to ensure beater sealing, I use type 3 aviation gasket on my other hobbys, does not increase width off the gasket, its really good stuff.
      Thank's to your vids I'm able to take my motor apart and in the process off making parts in the lathe to press the bearings.

    It's really shocking that such an old and established company like Brose would use such inferior parts and poor engineering . They knew from the beginning that they would have to compete with the likes of Bosch and Shimano and yet went ahead and dumped an untested
    motor on the market . they initially got rave reviews for power and smoothness of ride and then their reputation went into the toilet once these problems showed up . pity .

      When I made this video, I did not want to point out any weakness of any one motor. These are very early years in the eBike world, and ALL motors have their week points and issues.
      I am not defending the motor manufacturers, but don't lose sight that these motors were originally designed for the European road bike market. And as a road bike motor they don't tend to suffer repeated pedal strikes, pressure washers, deep water, mud, grit, bull dust, 30 ft jumps, rocks, tree roots, etc. etc.
      I believe it was the bike manufacturers that started using them in mtb's when Moustache first fitted a Bosch classic into one of their mountain bikes. I don’t say that the motor manufacturers were not to blame as they would not be blind to the fact that their motors were being fitted to mtb’s.
      There are also millions of motors out there working happily after thousands and thousands of miles…
      Remember when you would get off your normal bike and carry it through the mud because you could no longer pedal the thing! And now you use your eBike as a tractor. I know, I do the same and its great fun, but I bet the manufacturers never saw things like that coming!

      @@Ebikemotorcentre Fair enough , however Brose glossed over the belt and bearing issues by claiming that the problems had been solved via a software upgrade AND by increasing the warranty on the specialized bikes to four years ,instead of admitting to the real problems and fixing them as quickly as possible . That four year warranty won't do you much good if your bike breaks down in the middle of nowhere .
      Even if Brose does manage to fix these problems , the damage to their reputation has been done and to restore it will be a monumental task .
      i almost bought a Nox e bike with a brose motor until i heard of the problems . i now have ordered a Nox bike with the new Sachs Rs motor .
      So far , after three years there are no reported problems ,,,,,, YET . 😂

    This is very bad design, looks like they dont care about waterproofing things at all. I ride to work whole year, even in heavy rain and snow and that motor would die in one month probably...

    • @Ebikemotorcentre
      @Ebikemotorcentre  6 місяців тому +1

      Don't worry, these motors are fine in the rain and snow, it's normally deep water crossings, power washers etc. that cause problems and currently, this is the same for 99% of eBike motors on the market. Brose are now adding extra seals and weather protection, so this issue should start to become a thing of the past.
