      What a great attitude about this!! thank you for the feedback. I totally agree and frequently find myself talking people down from various frustrations about having to repair motors at all. So, i't refreshing when we see people who understand things break and then glad when there are service options available! We have discussed this many times here in the shop. The big question “why not?“
      We kind of make a joke that perhaps a seal will produce just enough drag to reduce the battery life by about 0.02 seconds and God forbid a published charge time not be a few milliseconds better than the next competitor battery life. 🤣🤣🤣

    • @ebikemotorrepair
      @ebikemotorrepair  9 місяців тому

      It’s hard to say for sure, but you may not actually have a noise. Sometimes noises can be tricky to trace down the source. Most likely if you had a noise that would. But again, without having eyes on, it might be a little tricky to troubleshoot. If the noise comes back and is consistent, then you could consider shipping it to us for an inspection. But considering your problem went away after you watched it from what I understand, that sounds like something was just noisy outside of the motor.

    Hi.. Great video. Are all these issues also present on the 2.2 motors from the 2023 Specialized turbo levo line up? Also, comparing Brose, Bosch and Shimano, which are the best motors in your opinion?

    • @ebikemotorrepair

      I get asked this a lot. So far, I must say they all have pros and cons. I tend to persuade people to buy the bike first and consider the motor second of the ones you asked about Shimano is my least favorite since it’s almost impossible to service them once they’re out of warranty. Speaking purely as a rider I have no fundamental performance complaints about the Shimano. speaking as a mechanic…. I wanna throw them all in the trash lol

      It might be something else altogether. Sometimes problems will manifest and it can be easy to assume it is something like what you suggested. however it might be the clutch bearing in the drive pulley going bad or bad already. You should send it to us for inspection. We can see what is going on with the motor. Also, it is possible you have several things occurring. Repairing the health of the motor will help diagnose other potential problems outside the motor. These are usually fairly easy to diagnose once the motor is fixed. But I will be willing to bet everything will get back to working order once repaired. Im no engineer but I have my moments. I would say it is there for support. In most internal motors the drive spindle is quite close to the internal motor. The drive spindle in the brose is a significant off set distance away from the internal motor. Like by nearly 2 inches. Make sense?

    Really good video, what would the average motor do mileage wise before things like the belt or bearings go on the Brose 2.2 Turbo levo?

    • @ebikemotorrepair
      @ebikemotorrepair  Рік тому +4

      On average around 3000mi. But it’s subjective. Riding conditions, rider weight, drive train, how hard it’s ridden, and other factors can effect the life. Like anything with a performance motor the harder you push the more likely something will break. There’s also the chances for small manufacturing defects to pop up and cause early death. But most customers get about 3000mi. One guy got nearly 12,000mi on a factory brose!! 😳
      That’s unheard of frankly. But still. Pretty cool.

    • @ebikemotorrepair
      @ebikemotorrepair  23 дні тому

      @@RonA-s1g these kinds of noises, believe it or not can be quite tricky to figure out without tearing into the motor. And sometimes we find that it’s not the motor at all. You should try riding with the motor off and see if you can still get the sound to occur. it doesn’t rule the motor out completely if you still hear the sound, but it sure does begin to pinpoint the only possible culprit in the motor. Also, this would highlight a lot of other culprit outside of the motor. Such as pedals, crank arms, chain, rear, cassette, etc.

      Not sure how we missed this comment. but to answer your question specialized motors are all either SL or Brose. We service both. We have a kit for both bafang mid drive and shimano line-up. But both bafang and simian are not motors we offer service for. The bafang are so cheap usually to pay us to repair them you are almost at the cost to replace it. The shimano motors are too tricky as they have booby traps that can sense if the motor has been opened which will make the motor fail completely.

    • @ebikemotorrepair
      @ebikemotorrepair  Рік тому +3

      You got it my friend. We are currently doing one on Bosch. As it is a much more popular motor than the Yamaha and some of the other motors. But we will add the whole yammy legacy to our what’s wrong series thanks to you!! Meanwhile just for you…
      Yams are really simple. The most common thing we see is simply sloppy drive assembly bearings. Mainly left and right. Then we also see the drive gear (small nylon gear that transfers power from internal motor to the drive assembly) can break off teeth during sudden change in load. Also inside that gear is a small clutch bearing. If the gear starts to crack near the center it can allow the clutch bearing to slip inside the gear working against its its purpose.
      Lastly, there’s a common “torque sensor error code” that actually spells game over. The motherboard is to blame. It’s a fault that prevents the motherboard from actually seeing the torque sensor. So it won’t see a new sensor either. And the unfortunate part is a motherboard is keyed into the exact magnetic field of its own internal motor magnet at the point that f manufacturing. Meaning the motherboard isn’t something we can “swap” if it’s faulty. Replacement time in that case.
      Can’t say we have seen much more on the yams. But we love the freaky things so let me know if you hear any good odd stories.

    Looks like a complete under engineered piece of junk. Unfit for purpose comes to mind. If that kind of build quality or lack of was fitted in cars etc there would be a law suit against the manufacturer. I think quality like that is totally unacceptable ! Where are they made?

    • @ebikemotorrepair
      @ebikemotorrepair  Рік тому +8

      They are made in Germany actually. And yeah that would be quite unacceptable type of treatment if this were in the automotive world. Although in my opinion one of the biggest problems with the Bros motor is in fact that it’s over engineered. They were trying to keep the weight down the power high and the noise low. The Bros has more moving parts than any other motor that we service. Classic German engineering. Super complicated and high-performance for some amount of time at least. Until it breaks. 🤣

    my turbo Levo is 1.5-year-old, I was cranking up a hill, then my motor made a high-pitched free-spinning sound and the pedals & cranks would not engage the motor but just spun without moving the bike. I turned the power off, coasted down the hill. turned the motor on, it worked for a few minutes then repeated the same symptoms, i turn power off and got off and waited a minute and turned power on and started pedaling back. still 5 miles away from parking lot i kept repeating the off on thing until i could build enough forward momentum to coast back. load the bike I went home about 30 min drive. at home, i had to see if the problem still was there. turned it on, rode around my half acre yard, it was working fine so i kept doing laps, harder and harder but it wasn't failing. i don't have any hills in my yard, but i tried to crank harder and harder and after about 15 minutes it finally failed the same way again. on my specialized app i did a diagnosis and it pulled and error code: SL1-B-HS-256

There are all kinds of things the motor need to know to operate properly or at all in some cases. What do you recommend that a new Levo owner do to protect their Brose motor from water? Your adding an oilseal outboard of needle roller seems like a no-brainer ( why don't they do this at factory???) but may void warranty. So what would you do if you bought a new Brose bike?

    • @ebikemotorrepair
      @ebikemotorrepair  Рік тому

      So I’m a big believer in warranty support. If somethings under warranty and it breaks let it break. You could put a little grease down in that gap between the shaft and the sprocket carrier and that will certainly not void your warranty. At least I would be very surprised if it would. You could also put the X ring on the left side Between the case and the crank arm. That certainly won’t void your warranty. While this isn’t bulletproof it should aid in preventing bad dust and water ingress into the unit. Otherwise I would play the odds and just fix a motor when it starts giving symptoms once it’s outside of warranty and then fortify the motor at that time.

      @@ebikemotorrepair Thanks. I suspect most people agree with you but for me it seems quite insane that Brose do not install that ($1?) oil seal at the factory knowing that water will get in and start corrosion from the first wash of the bike. Thankfully, I haven't had a problem yet. Even while running unrestricted.

    • @ebikemotorrepair
      @ebikemotorrepair  5 місяців тому

      It certainly doesn’t hurt the motor, but it may not perform as good as it could. I’m not exactly sure which way the power map would be affected by a shorter crank arm length I would have to think deeper about it but what would occur is power delivery difference. A shorter crank arm length will produce less torque on the torque sensor. So knowing that length is how the system compensates for power delivery.

      That’s a great observation you make. We have seen it as well. Some of our customers say they’re on their fifth or sixth warranty within a few months of some of the newest bikes. We haven’t gotten any official response from anyone official within Brose. But, we speculate they must have made some changes within that model range the internal motor that could potentially cause the planetary gears to put unwanted stress on the bearings that support the magnets. Again this is pure speculation not an official diagnosis. But something seems different for sure. Mostly in brose noise occurs when the bearing stack inside the front drive spindle starts to loosen inside the front drive spindle itself. I can make a video about this once we have enough statistics to go on. Until then it’s smart guess work.

Rest assured the Yamaha don’t seem to have a lot of issues with hardware like motherboards, etc. However, if you ever get an error code for the torque sensor, then you should know ahead of time that is a motherboard failure in disguise. It would require the replacement of the motor. The PWX3 is something we are still learning about currently as it’s fairly new.

That makes me doubly frustrated, as I'm looking at a new Specialized Turbo Levo right now, as my next eMTB. Knowing that the motor has all these design shortcomings, makes me very wary of putting down several thousand units of my hard earned cash for it.
    I would like to tear into the motor while it's still new, and do all the sealing to make it at least somewhat more resistant to the elements. Unfortunately, I don't think the manufacturer would approve of this, come time to use the warranty. I actually think, that mountain bikes in general are really flimsy from a mechanical point of view. They're fun, and useful but sometimes you just have to wonder if you're getting you're moneys worth.

      all the motors seem to have some cons so i can't isolate brose. I would think of it more like the price to pay for the fun. It isn't unlike having a dirt bike, motors will give you problems. I would definitely not open a new motor as it will void a warranty. If I were you get that nike and have a blast and expect some day you will need to repair or replace your motor.

    Hi, my 2018 Turbo Como, Brose motor torque sensor seems to sometimes stick for up to 1-1.5 second when pedaling at some gear ratios. I also noticed sometimes I hear electric motor sounding cogging sounds when under heavy load.
    (Noted that at 6:31 you mentioned sometimes it's only a simple low cost sprag bearing that can be at fault)
    Is there a fair chance that these symptoms could be simple fixes (possible DIY route with right parts/tools) or is this motor complex/prone enough to water damage/wear that I'm better off getting a new motor?

    • @ebikemotorrepair
      @ebikemotorrepair  Рік тому +3

      This has definitely been the center of some hot topic discussions throughout the Internet. Personally, I’m kind of indifferent but definitely think they were ill informed about who was going to be using these motors. I think in a stable calm environment these motors are pristine pieces of engineering. As soon as they get exposed to moisture and blunt force that’s when they start falling apart. Lol
      Which, of course is exactly the demographics and their intended use. Abuse may not have been accounted for. but personally I have no engineering background but could certainly see the challenge that it must be to keep weight low, cost low, battery consumption low, and power and speed high. I guess there has to be a little Achilles’ heel in every design.
      One more little nerd moment here: I also believe no matter how much you simulate or pilot test something you will never know the true nature of an invention until it is applied to the masses in the millions of units. That’s where you really see the flaws come to the surface. I just don’t think there’s a way to test for that. I’m a patient individual and can say that what we are seeing now in the evolution curve of these types of devices is very exciting and encouraging. It will certainly take some time, but I will be willing to bet that whatever comes from all of this in the future we will see some magnificent machines hit the market. fingers crossed.

    • @ebikemotorrepair
      @ebikemotorrepair  Рік тому

      It’s always hard to say without testing it here at the shop. But more often than not loud noises from those motors typically come from the planetary gear cluster. In some shape form or fashion. There’s actually several places where noise can occur. But sometimes it’s an harmless noise and nothing to worry about. Other times it might get progressively worse. Other times it might be a symptom that the planetary gear cluster is close to failure. However, there are other things that can make noise also in those units. I’d ride it out until something happens and send it in at that time for service ebikemotorrepair.com/repair-overhaul-service/

      That’s good you found something that works for you. Yeah Bros didn’t really do a whole lot to the motor over their legacy so far. They have recently improved the Sprague bearings and the belts. They’ve also gone through multiple iterations of software which seems to have helped as well. But they are definitely on the struggle bus trying to sort out the glitches. I am optimistic in time we will see them get there. Because, that motor is a great performing motor all around. Powerful and quiet.
