      It isn't about going far and fast. We feel we haven't seen enough because we have been in a rush to get to the good trade winds. You are truly seeing a place and can take joy in that!
      We are excited to slow down once we get to the BVIs!

    Likely related to that crap you put in to fix the head leak. It exacerbated any other weakness you had in the coolant system.

      Oh you are testing my memory, what went wrong in this video related to the engine?

      @@ShesTheSkipper not testing anything. Just saying, as an ase certified mechanic, that my experience is that that stuff can be motor ending.
      I would’ve done everything to pull into port under sail and fixed the problem properly.

      @@mikejmardis oh no I just mean I cannot remember anything happening with the engine in this video. As of Charleston we were already overstating our US visas and were being actively monitored by US Customs and Border Patrol to leave as soon as the north winds stopped so that was not an option.
      And to be honest I didn't realize how much it mattered and that that was not an acceptable fix, that meant ir wasn't a huge priority in the months that followed either!
      Wish I had your comments back then :)

    The head stay failure you had a few videos in front of this one ? I have been trying to figure out why you had the failure?
    The normal operation of the head stay when opening or closing the sail is to pivot on the internal wire / head stay.
    The failure I think came from a drag on the pivot points.
    Is it possible the head stay has a sag / bow in it due to improper backstay tension ? Causing a bow in the head stay which could cause the damage to the internal head stay wire ?
    What did you or the rigger find when doing the head stay replacement ?
    Please let your viewers know, you may stop someone else from having this problem in the future.

    Non sailor question: Why is it a bad idea to cross the gulf stream if winds are from the North?

    • @ShesTheSkipper
      @ShesTheSkipper  3 роки тому +1

      Because the gulf stream flows from the Caribbean and up past Florida heading north, all of the water is moving from south to north. If winds are blowing north to south, then you get something called wind against tide (wind against current in this case).
      If you picture the wind blowing in the SAME direction as the current and how it would almost help to flatten or round out the waves, then that should help you imagine the opposite - when the wind is blowing against the current/waves and the way the waves would stand up and be even taller and choppier (like petting a dog with the hair growth direction vs against the hair growth and seeing how that makes the hair stand up).
      It can create very dangerous and rough/choppy conditions!
      I hope that helps illustrate for a non-sailor - thanks for the comment and questions 😊

      I think this is what everyone does now that we are out here sailing!

    Hi Cally. Why did you travel from the US in the winter? Wouldn’t it have been easier to travel in the summer? Why did you have to put the quarantine flag up? Awesome videos! Safe travels.

    • @ShesTheSkipper
      @ShesTheSkipper  5 років тому +1

      Well we had a wedding of John's best friends at the end of August, and we thought our repairs would take a month at most. But there were a few surprises and it took TEN weeks (see all the repairs in episode 1)!
      But it shouldn't have been this bad. Tons of sailors have said November should not be that nad but this was the WORST year in the last decade by far for weather!!

    • @ShesTheSkipper
      @ShesTheSkipper  5 років тому +2

      Also, you put up a quarantine flag when you arrive to a new country but haven't cleared customs and immigration yet. It's how you declare you are a new arrival. You cannot go ashore until you check in and then once the formalities are done you put up the flag of the country you just checked in with and keep it up until you leave for your next country.

      We loved it and wish we could have explored it more but bad weather and limited visas mean it will have to wait until next time! Plus did you see how great the rhode islanders were to us! Apologies for not balancing that statement out!! But you know how much weather affects a sailor! It's all you think about! ⛵
