  • Tying the Bunny leech
    Here is another one of my favorite guide flies, the bunny leech. The bunny leech is super fast and easy to tie and it catches fish! Not only that, the bunny leech is a super durable fly. You are more likely to loose this fly or have the hook rust out before the fly gets worn out.

      Would this be fished on a sinking or intermediate line typically?

    Loved the Lefty Kreh quote about Chartreuse. My favorite color for lots of flies.
    You’re videos are so much fun to watch. I like your positive attitude and simple guide flies.
    I have tied these for years and in sizes 3/0 and 5/0 they are my go to fly for northern pike.

    I can say they do catch Texas redfish. Fishing in the southern Caribbean now and they work great for little barracudas that want movement and less flash.

    This guide flies series has been amazing. I love fly tying but I do not like hours at the vice. I also like keeping everything as streamlined as possible and I don't think you could have made it any easier. A few easy flies for multiple situations! THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO ALVIN!!!

    I have a bunch of these in magnum sizes that I tie for pike. Black and red head/white tail are my favorites! I’ve also seen guys put a hot spot with marabou above the tail before wrapping the body. Good stuff.

    It’s a great pattern that people don’t use because it’s to simple , I have a bugger box full of just these in multiple colors . Heading to AK in August for silvers pink is like candy for them . Very rarely do I weight these because as you say when they are wet they are heavy and in most cases I’m using a sink tip anyways . I Like your channel because you work off the KISS theory , why complicate things when you don’t have to .

    I've started to use mono thread because it allows the material's color to sho through. Important to tie a half hitch every time you pause so thread doesn't unravel.

    I really like the weighted version with a conehead (either brass or tungsten). The way it jigs in the water is very realistic when comparing to actual leeches.

    I've tied a lot of these in rusty orange crayfish colors and they work real well. I gussy up the fly a little by using a straight-cut Zonker strip for the tail and a crosscut strip for the body. The body comes out a little fuller that way. As you say, it's a great guide fly.

    Alvin! Another awesome fly for everywhere! Your guide flies over the last couple weeks have been awesome. They got me stoked to take my family down to North Padre Island the first week of April but with all the fish die offs, we decided to wait till next year to let the Gulf breath. We live in NW Wyoming so its a haul to get down there. Hopefully Ill get to use all the flies I tied next year! Cheers!

    Love to see the action in the water for this fly. How do you saturate it to allow it to sink?

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  3 роки тому

      It soaks up water pretty fast usually just a couple of strips. Or if you can just let it sink on it's own.

    Awesome fly! Thanks for sharing. When using different hook sizes, is there a ratio for tail length to hook size?

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  3 роки тому +1

      Not really, I usually make the tail a little longer than the hook shank, but I have seen it tied with a much shorter or longer tail.

    Hey Alvin... do you find that particular Loon UV glue to leave some "junk" after you hit it with the light? It's the only UV I've ever used - but I always seem to have a little slime or stickiness or something left on it.

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  3 роки тому

      I have noticed it at times. Not sure what causes it, maybe the battery is not fully charged in the light? I have hears other people complain about that as well.

    • @toddbaker4712
      @toddbaker4712 3 роки тому

      @@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing yeah - I think mine could be kind of weak. Sometimes a little cleanup with rubbing alcohol afterward helps, but it'd be nice not to have to. Time for a new
      light.

  • @JeffHartman

    Stupid questions n but why did you cut the tail and tie it in. Could you just tie it all in in one piece and wrap it it? I hope that makes sense.

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  3 роки тому +1

      Yes you can do it that way, but you would have to wrap the rabbit back over itself and tie it down and then wrap forward. That would leave a bump in the back. Does that make sense?

  • @randychappell5955

    I guess it would depend on the skill level of your clients. But novices targeting bigger fish around structure and tying novice level knot could run thru and big box of flies.
    Handing out 5 shank game changers would bankrupt you.
