Chris wrote this song for the lead singer of Mother Love Bone, Andrew Wood (and pretty much the whole album for that matter). They were roommates and close friends. Andrew's death affected him hard. I miss both of them. Andrew would have been a superstar along with the rest of them.

The whole Temple of the Dog album is a tribute to Andrew Wood. Andrew Wood was Chris Cornell's roommate and singer of Mother Love Bone, which is basically Pearl Jam today. Andrew died from hermon and Chris asked the Mother Love Bone members if the would collaborate on the album. Eddie had just came to Seattle to audition with them. Chris took him under his wing. Seattle was a very tight knit music scene then with all bands supporting each other. Eddie just kinda joined in during a rehearsal. The rest is history. It was an amazing scene in those days. I'd just turned 21, these were fuck bar and small venue bands then. We didn't know it would explode, just that we loved it. Give Soundgarden-Slaves and Bulldozers a go. It will melt your face off.

This is a magical ✨️ album! These guys got together in honor of Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone. Chris and Andy were sharing a apartment and were very close friends. Andrew unfortunately died from a heroin overdose. 😢 And yes this was before Pearl Jam but the group mother love bone were so impressed with Eddie that they got together and Pearl Jam was created.

This was the first time Eddie Vedder appeared on any record. Eddie was sitting into temple of the dog practice as he had just been chosen as lead vocalist for Mookie Blaylock (who changed their name to Pearl Jam). Chris was trying to sing both parts but it wasn't working, on a run through Eddie stepped up and gave Chris a look, he then sang the low part and the magic happened. Temple of the Dog Jeff Ament Bass (Mother love bone/Pearl Jam) Stone Gossard Guitar (Mother Love Bone/Pearl Jam) Matt Cameron Drums (Soundgarden/ Pearl Jam) Mike McCready Lead guitar (Pearl Jam/ Mad season) Chris Cornell (Soundgarden/ Audioslave). If you are looking for something new listen to The Warning.

Nope, Temple Of The Dog album was recorded in late 90 and released April 91. Alive was the debut Pearl Jam single released after Temple OTD in July of 91. Think the Hunger Strike single and /or Temple album may have had another push after Ten debuted, which may explain things 😉

Yup. Classic of that era. Eddie wasn’t originally on the album, but spontaneously joined Chris in singing the chorus at a rehearsal. Chris felt like it completed the song and they kept Eddie on it. And when Chris starts hitting those high notes, people are just like.. bruh. “Say Hello 2 Heaven” and “Call Me A Dog” are other great tracks from this record. Chris was a beast. And Eddie joining forces with him was gold.

Eddie told us that a friend had told him that if he wanted to heal then he would have to help others.. and so he did.. and so I did.. I was in that concert listening to his words of wisdom that meant so much to me. PJ helped me get through a very rough time in my life and I agree.. Grandma from California, again!!! Love this reaction! I still have this CD and this is my favorite song on it! Of course at the time, I had no idea how famous these two would become. Supposedly Hunger Strike was about the frustration of dealing with record labels? Still a huge Chris Cornell and Eddy Vedder fan. If you’re looking for a 5th vocalist, I suggest Dave Grohl, lead singer of the Foo Fighters formed in 1994. Dave was originally the drummer for Nirvana, Corbain’s best friend. He was devastated by Cobain’s suicide, and eventually started writing music. The Foo Fighters are still churning out hits. He is the lead vocalist/lead guitarist for FF.

    @ina.aaahhh 7 місяців тому +3

With every one of these reactions I have to write a whole story behind the song, so here we go again
This song, along with the whole album, was a tribute to Andy Wood, singer of the band Mother Love Bone and close friend of Chris Cornell, who had just recently passed away due to an OD. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament (guitarist and bassist of Mother Love Bone) were looking to start a new band, which would later become Pearl Jam, so they sent out a bunch of demo tapes in hopes of finding a new singer. Some of those ended up in the hands of former RHCP drummer, who was a friend of Eddie's. He sent Eddie the tapes and Eddie sang over them. Stone and Jeff were impressed with Eddie's singing, and invited Eddie who was in California at the time, to come to Seattle. Around this time Stone and Jeff joined forces with Chris Cornell to create Temple of the Dog, and were in the process of recording the album. Originally, this song was just supposed to be a filler track on the album. Chris didn't see that much in it, and really struggled getting the singing in the chorus right. Eddie was there at the recording, and voluntarily stepped in during the chorus to fill in the lower vocal parts. That was the moment everything came together, the missing piece of the puzzle was Eddie. Without Eddie, this song would have just been another filler track on the album.

This is truly one of the greatest songs ever made. The only thing that kinda sucks is that it's so short, but I think that was intentional, so it leaves us feeling hungry for more of the song.
    P.S.
This wasn't an interview for Eddie, but it was at the very beginning of Pearl Jam before they were even called Pearl Jam. At first, they went by Mookie Blaylock, which was the name of an NBA basketball player. Also, Eddie's involvement in this song was because of a spontaneous moment where he was in the studio waiting to start working with the other members of Pearl Jam, who are also the band in Temple of the Dog. As he was waiting, he was watching Chris do take after take of lines of this song, and Eddie could see Chris wasn't happy with the way it was sounding. Then Eddie had an idea, I'm not sure how he approached the situation, but basically, he suggested maybe he could sing a verse and do harmonies to help blend in a different sound. Because, at first, Chris was recording double tracks to harmonize with himself, and he just wasn't happy with how it was coming out. So when Eddie proposed this idea, Chris was ready to try anything. As soon as Eddie started singing along with the track, supposedly Chris's face lit up, and everything just fell into place from there. That's the story as I've heard it, but I wasn't there and don't know how accurate it is, but it's an awesome chain of events if that's what actually happened.

This is the only song on the Temple of the Dog album that Chris and Eddie share lead vocals on. The band was a side project for Cornell. The band was what would become Pearl Jam, except for Matt Cameron, the Soundgarden drummer. The album was a tribute to another grunge singer that passed away, Andy Wood of Mother Love Bone. That's why this song and the rest of the album is more slow and ballady. I do recommend checking out more of the album, because it is a highlight for Cornell vocal wise and of course, more Soundgarden!

Green River was the one of the original names of Pearl Jam. Mother Love Bone a band fronted by Andrew Wood shared a flat with Stone Gossard of Green River (later Pearl Jam) and was good friends with Chris Cornell of Soundgarden. In 1990 Andrew Wood died of an OD. At the same time Green River (later Pearl Jam) were getting a new singer, Eddie Vedder, who'd moved to Seattle. Chris and Stone wanted to do an album to celebrate Andrews life so they did a collaboration and called themselves Temple of The Dog. This is quite a late comment on this video but I first was introduced to this song in a specific point of my life (first time I had moved away from my parents, for real, in another state). I was living with my brother and his partner and this song was played in an old broke down van we all piled into almost every day to drive an hour into San Fransisco. So whenever I hear this song, I just have the image in my head of the view of looking back into a city that seemed to hold everything I ever wanted, all lit up at night, through the dark hills of the Marin headlands as I rode home with two of my favorite people in the world. It has such good feelings for me.
This song was immediately followed with King of Carrot Flowers, Pt. 1 and then King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 2 & 3 (which of course, lead me to listen to the pivotal album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel). And also another song connected to that city and that time because I first heard it there is Closing Time by Semisonic.
That’s really all good music is suppose to be, the purpose of it. To recall moments in time that you will never forget.

Chris Cornell did a bunch of covers like Billie Jean and Nothing Compares 2 U and One…love how he added his unique flavors to his covers…really love his acoustic stuff to showcase his voice. Kinda like how Layne Staley’s voice is so beautiful and showcased in unplugged.

Eddie doesn’t appear much on this album. The album was written by Cornell, and the band is basically Pearl Jam before they released their first album. I’d suggest the song Pushin Forward Back.

Great reaction MollyBoy!! I wouldn't say this was quite an 'audition' for Eddie Vedder - but it was just around the time that Pearl Jam was forming. Chris Cornell (RIP) was a roommate of Andrew Wood, lead singer of Mother Love Bone. He had passed from an overdose, and the album was Chris' tribute to him!
    AMAZING collaboration!
Highly suggest: Push In Forward Back and Say Hello 2 Heaven as two other Temple Of The Dog offerings! Be prepared for Chris' vocals to blow you away. Cheers!

Got lucky with tickets and got to see these guys (sans Vedder) at The Paramount in Seattle a few months before Chris's death.
RIP Chris. ❤ No one sings like you anymore.

This was a tribute album to a band called Mother Love Bone. It was not a rehearsal or anything for Vedder, Mother Love Bone is where both bands came from, both Pearl Jam and Soundgarden

What a time in music. I was like 12 when this came out and spent every day listening to as much as I could. I'm not sure there's any better era especially for heavy music than 85-95

Your intro about how iconic these two voices were to this era was eerie to me, as for me this is THE song that plays in my head whenever anyone mentions how amazing their vocals are.
Plenty of people have said it already, but you’re gonna love “Say Hello 2 Heaven”.

Another great reaction! 2 of the best voices ever, then put them together… chefs kisses.
I think you are far enough in your journey to appreciate some Arch Enemy. Alissa’s vocals will amaze you… and the harmonizing guitars are out of this world. Please check out “Handshake with Hell” (the original video, not the recap) I think you’ll dig it. Congrats on 40k! Love your channel dude!

Stone glossary and Jeff Amett where in a band called Green rover with a singer named Andrew wood. Andrew was best friends with Chris Cornell.
Andrew died and this project was a tribute to him. Chris and Matt(the drummer) where already in sound garden and Jeff and Stone had brought Eddie in to form a new band then called Mookie Blaylock after the basketball player but later changed the name to Pearl Jam

Chis is an absolute master. I have a soft spot for Layne/Jerry and Scott Weiland, mostly because I enjoyed their bands' catalogs more than Soundgarden, but Chris really was a god amongst men. Objectively, he may be the greatest rock vocalist ever. And his solo material is also incredible.

I'm so glad you listened to this one... it showcases both voices so well. Knowing you love Eddie like I do, I'm going out on a limb to recommend a really slow one, but it's epic...Just Breathe at Austin City Limits by PJ. It's beautiful and his voice is a bit more mature than the tracks you've heard...and it ages really well. The ACL live version is important...it's the best ever. Great video again!

Also, since we’re getting TOTD I kinda feel like that has to lead you to Pearl Jam’s precursor, Mother Love Bone. This whole album was in tribute to MLB singer Andrew Wood
Highlight of theirs has to be Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns
