    Picked up a chaos army set box for $125 from a LGS cause he thought it didn't have all the weapon options for the knight. I now have 3 fully magnetized abhorrent knight a Tyrant knight with 4 war dogs. All together $330. Cheapest army I have, but the most points on the board. Tyrant was a shock when I had to 3d print some A10 & A11 pieces ;)

    Try to find wardogs.
    Realise nowhere has them in stock.
    Get them 3D printed.

    tip for chaosifying the imperial kits, you can hold back bits like the pauldrons and shin guards from the chaos kits and swap them with the same bits on the imperial kits. then you have all your models with bits from chaos and imperial and nothing looks out of place

  • @TheXasTube

    One additional hint for starting the army:
    When you allready have any other chaos army you can use your first 3 wardogs or 1 big one as allies for your other chaos army.
    Allows you to play with your big toys before you have a full 1k pts ready.
    Assembling a full "sideboard" of 3 brigands, 3 karnivores and 1 big knight of your choice is a very motivating way to setup such an army.
    Most chaos armies really love having the big boy or dog swarm take over some duty that their main book is bad at.
    I personally love having either a few brigands or a fat tyrant with laser lance and plasma blaster to lend fire support to my world eaters. It really screws your opponents brain when suddenly there is a very real scenario where a world eaters army can OUTSHOOT him if he makes mistakes. Additionally it forces them to keep honest with transport vehicles. Without the knights there usually is diddly eff you can do against a cheap, cheeky rhino other than trade one of your more expensive units for it. A pair of brigands has a very real chance to just smoke it from 24" away with their melta spears without getting into too much trouble themselves. Or you commit and already have a unit ready to charge whats spilling out.

    They're currently my favorite army to play specifically due to the versatility of choice from having magnetized the War Dogs.
    While War Dogs+Daemon lists are the meta, there were a few recently that did well with a big knight added in.
    If you want all dogs, current best seems to be 1 Stalker, 5 Brigands, and 6 Karnivores with either 2 squads of Nurglings and a Sloppity Bilepiper, or just 3 squads of nurglings.
    When it comes to big Knights, you need to decide if you want more of a melee or more of a shooting focus. If melee, Rampagers are the way to go every time. If you want to focus on shooting, I'd recommend either a Knight Lancer or a Knight Castigator as the former gives assault and the latter gives sustained hits. Unfortunately, the Abominant is just not overly good and the desecrator and despoiler are too overcosted. The despoiler can output okay damage, but it's 455 points with poor abilities.
    Recommended lists here would be:
    Melee= Rampager, 1 stalker, 1 Huntsmen, 2 Brigands, 6 Karnivores, and 2x3 Nurglings.
    Shooting= Lancer/Castigator, 1 stalker, 5 Brigands, 3 Karnivores/Executioners, and 2x3 nurglings.
    At the moment, we rely on daemon allies for doing secondaries consistently without handicapping our other units, but you could theoretically play fixed and ditch them.
    If you really want to go overboard, it's possible to fit 14 War Dogs into a list following the last update. It wouldn't be good, but the look you'll get would be worth the effort.

    • @scottdevnull5778
      @scottdevnull5778 8 місяців тому

      question on the rampager, and karnivor, both have 2 melee weapons so when they get into melee do you have to chose between the two (I know with infantry you do but want sure given the whole super heavy walker thing) or use both ?

    • @Darkja
      @Darkja 8 місяців тому +1

      @@scottdevnull5778you select a single profile to attack with. However, if you are in engagement range with 2+ units you can divide said profile as you want. For example take sweep with Chainsword Rampager into 2 units in engagement range, you can separate the 18 attacks in 9/9 for example, if 1 unit has only 1 model and the rest is full, you can do like 2/16 and so on.

    • @Darkja
      @Darkja 8 місяців тому

      I still feel like War Dogs outperform even the "good" big knights in the end, i have been trying big knights and even after winning i trully feel they are not great and i could have done better with pure dogs, its a shame. Rampager is x2 Karnivores +100 extra points to put into more dogs or allies, i dont think he is quite worth that.
      I think part of the problem are the Army Rules/Detachment rules, they are just bad, i can ignore that with more models in the field, but once the number goes down by playing big ones i really start to feel the abscence of army rules since now your models are more expensive and they get nothing too, they are simply too situational and absolutely random if they activate or not, so you can never count on them, and CK's dont have good ways to force battleshock tests outside the once per turn test and you need to be close, and you need to have done damage, and you need to be turn 3 forward... it jsut sucks. 40K doesnt work that way, you shoot until thing dies, you dont want to leave them alive, so if they live it was a fluke to begin with, and then the the only good part is the +1 to wound, since -1 to be hit is super redundant since most units that might survive your attack would be bracketed (so -1 to hit already) or you are probably in engagement range so -1 to hit already again... -1BS and -1WS would be much better
      The only good part of the bad army rules is that when you play allies they are really not missing out anything... oh, and other than Nurglings, Beasts of Nurgle have been performing really well for me, dropping one on the backfield and marching it towards the opponents home objective is hilarious, they are so tanky that normally can survive and kill a small unit just sitting in the objective, they have to dedicate some firepower to take it down and lose time moving back, or just ignore it and lose the objective.

    • @MrHoneuma
      @MrHoneuma 8 місяців тому

      @@scottdevnull5778 You still have to choose one of the two. They've got different uses. On a Karnivore, you want to use the sweep profile on the Reaper Chaintalon for dealing with chaff units with 1 wound models. For everything else, you'd want to use the Slaughterclaw since it has higher strength, the same AP, and higher damage output.
      On a Rampager it's a similar situation, but with a bit more choices to make. Into infantry like marines, you'd want the sweep from the Reaper Chainsword; if the target is like terminators, you'd want the sweep on the Warpstrike Claw. Alternatively, the strike of the weapons serve for dealing with big units. The Claw should be used for though units that possess either a 3+ save or worse, or a invulnerable save, to get the most damage out of each wound that makes it through. The Reaper Chainsword you'll want to use for heavy units that do not possess an invulnerable save, to either push a 2+ to saving on 6s, or bypass it entirely, provided you have the strength and damage to kill the target. Occasionally you'll need to decide between the 2 for striking a target based on their toughness. Weighing if it's better to wound on 3s and give no save, or wound on 2s and they save on 6s

    My personal favorite proxy is using Gunpla models as my Knights. The 2 basic scales match the small and large knights really well, and attaching them to some bases with temporary adhesive like blue tack or a pin with socket has worked great for me. They're a fun hobby all their own, and they are much cheaper than particularly large knights is your group enjoys a fun themed proxy army.

  • @Ravnican127

    As someone who recently started this army, if you are in the US, find 3 wardog boxes. They are constantly out of stock compared to the others. Also, having 6 wardogs and some small unit like say nurglings (yeah IYKYK) you have a solid 1,000 point army where you can take the chaff unit, or add an enhancement to your stalker. After that work on gathering your big knights or, if you enjoy the playstyle, grab a few more wardogs.

    I actually created my own chaos knight household taking inspiration from the beasts of chaos line from age of Sigmar. I use a lot of kits from that range for either daemon proxies (my house, uses beastman auxiliaries in lore) or to decorate their bases. I have even created some little extra models like different beastman troops to aid my nobles, or even a heretech sacresant out of the Warhammer plus sorceress that came out last year. I also have an alt account called “Knights of RedGor”, where I drop different bits of my war, and games that I have played with my household. Feel free to check it out! All of my notes are converted, and I am even painting my most recent Cerastus Knight, Tower of Silver, while listening to this video!

    Do keep in mind that individual knight kits can be fairly expensive (particularly in Canada and I'd guess for the Aussies), but the overall is less. This could be relevant to those on a tight budget that could only afford a box of space marines every month or two. If you are in that budget situation you may want to consider another faction or keep it as a slow burn project.

    Just swap the knightly head to a big 3D printed ork face, speed stripe paint job, rear spoiler, ork guns pointing to every direction without any meaning, a circular saw blade as a melee weapon, and some grots on shoulders etc to repair it.

We often give eachother friendly reminders if they are walking into a 'gotcha' moment too.
      But yeah, if I'm playing a big tournament where I'm under strict time pressure, I would prefer WYSIWYG.

    Get x6 War Dog boxes, then some Nurglings and a couple of Beasts of Nurgle, there. Until big knights get a buff either points (or skills for the Abominant) or Army rules improvements, there is no reason to run big knights in a competitive list. Now, if you want awesome models, get a Desecrator/Rampager/Abominant, they look amazing, they are just not good on the game.
    Army Rules (Traitoris Lance) is trash, its one of the worst army rules in the game, its random and only happens once per battle round, and you have to wait until battle round 3 to even have a real impact... and still it wont most of the time since its random. The -1 to hit its pointless, most of the times you will be in engagement range, or the battleshocked unit would be bracketed, which means the -1 tho be hit is most of the times useless. Play the game without relying on anything but your datasheets/stratagems because most of the times your Army/Detachment rules mean squat.
    Abominant is comically overpriced, i wouldnt pay even 300 pts for one with how bad it is, id rather take 2 war dogs 100% of the time. The others still need points drops but most of the time they cost about 2 and a half + war dogs, and 95% of the time when i play with a big one i think to myself "i would be doing so much better if my big knight where 2 or 3 dogs + allies"... its really sad.

      Now?, he is a waaaaay more expensive Neurolictor, less survivable as well funny enough, Neurolictor is so much harder to kill than a big knight. A single battleshock test out of phase amounts to nothing most of the times and for 400 points?, no thanks. Neurolictor actually gives you the entire CK army rule... but from turn 1 on top of that. Sure, Abominant hits harder than Neurolictor, but he is 5 times the points and still its nothing in comparison with its peers.

      @@Darkja What makes abominant so great and what it's pointed is for the context of the army rule and strategems. When he does mortal wounds, if he kills a 1 model or does 1 mortal wound that's a battleshock test on their battleshock phase that not only comes with the usual debuffs of battleshock, but also combos your strategems. I've used pteroshades to heal an abominant 11 wounds between two phases, and I've used it to heal a wardog who was bracketted and needed to kill an important target. I've used 2 abominants, increasing the likelihood of at least one target getting battleshocked, and getting the FNP in combat. It's been a star for me whenever I've used it, and others who I know used it say the same.

      @@redrumssam5888way too many "IF" parts to his skills to make him usable for me... i dont think its worth it, not for 1/5th of my army, when on top of that its a unit thats inferior in both shooting and fighting to other options. Maybe its themeta you are in, but in mine having an Abominant at 9" of anything to make use of its skills means that Abominant is dead next turn... and thats IF it even makes it that close beyond all the chaff that can get in the way and prevent even that.
      Sisters get a +1 to hit and might get a +1 to wound, IF they are battleshocked from turn 3 forward then at best you put them at 3+ again... and risk putting them at +1 to wound anyways.
      Votann just brutalizes you even more if you have fewer models.
      Any Space Marines with Oath will love having a focal unit to destroy easily. I dont know about you, but i have faced quite a few Ironstorm Spearheads that just love to face knights, specially big ones!
      Tyranids dont care about battleshock at all because 90% of the time they roll 3d6, and in fact can battleshock you waaaaaay easier with x2-3 Neurolictors, x1 Deathleaper, Shadow + Neurotyrant or Screamer-Killers, they have way many more tests that you do and costs way less too in points. Focusing bs tests on a single big knight and then bringing it down after is super easy (i know since i also play Nids)
      Chaos Daemons dont care about battleshock either, they pass and HEAL from battleshock tests more often than they fail, in fact giving them battleshock tests at below starting strenght just make them heal full 60% of the time!
      World Eaters... oh this guys, MoE and Kharn are still monsters, and all big knights are characters for MoE, i guess you know what wil happen to them if any Knight gets charged, they all dies on the spot, again, id rather have more firepower and more models because if they do get charged i lose way less points overall with dogs. Nurglings are great screens but at some point they will get a charge
      Sorry, but my meta is incredibly bad for relying on big knights for anything but wasting points, SPECIALLY Abominant, at least if they focus down a single unit if its a dog i lose 140-170 points, not 400+., and splitting damage to trigger bs tests is absolutely not worth it.

    If you're not printing your knights army you're doing yourself a serious dis-service.
    1) Models are FANTASTIC, better than anything GW has EVER released. No contest at all here, especially when it comes to customizing for a specific god. Want a Nurgle wardog? There's options. Tzeentch? yup there's one of those too.
    2) STLs are CHEAP. A whole knight may be FREE in parts or at most around $15-30 USD. That's nothing compared to GWs cost. Like it's literally cheaper than a basic kit of some random character let alone a knight. You also own that file forever. So the one file could make 12 Tyrants and an Abominant for less than a chaplain on bike.
    3) Wardogs are sold out, eternally, perpetually, and probably forever more. I can't even buy from scalpers, cause there's none to find. Meanwhile the files are Free and I can print one for about $2 of resin.
    Really the cost of a Great 3d printer is less than a knight by itself. Honestly it's a complete victory for resin printing in this category. There's no need to buy GW here for anything except paints, and only if you like those.
