I wish more people did talk about the Reddit issue, as it will just become a trend of companies killing off third party related products and it's not good for consumers.
I'll be deleting my Reddit account.
Bad decisions and bad culture ALWAYS start at the top.
Elon comes along and makes it ok to steamroll people and all the other "brilliant" and "forward-thinkng" CEOs are like, 'monkey see, monkey do'.
Bravo.
Then maybe those API companies should make their own platform. It’s costing the company money to let you run through an API
@@toptiertech7291 You mean it's actually saving the company money by actually implementing the features they don't? You know that if those users were not calling the APi they would be calling the services directly, right? If anything, an API service is much less data and requests than directly accessing a service.
@@VanisherXP you know that when you use the service directly you get things like Ad revenue right? All those ads you see while scrolling down the Reddit app and website? They get paid for that. If people are using APIs they don’t get the same views on that ad which could hurt how much the receive. There’s a reason Twitter did it first
It's always running a risk making an app that's fully dependent on another company, but still Reddit really could've handled this A LOT better.
I can't believe you guys didn't make this episode 8 seconds longer... 1:23:45

25:44 in the age of internet where SEO has taken over, Reddit is so invaluable. During the blackout I really realized how many useful reddit posts I can’t see(details abt a concert venue, my Twitter bookmarks not working, etc. I used Reddit semi-regular for like two years, and over the past few days have learned a lot about the platform. The fact they didn’t have an official app till 2016 and all their moderators are sub volunteers like other sms that post people is wild!! It’s really sad because it’s become the home of a lot of niches and community information. I saved hundreds of dollars & gained for much perspective from ACTUAL students from my university’s subreddit the summer before I transferred. I hope the blackouts impact their business to enough to listen to users.
It won’t. Because they’ll remove mods and reopen before they lose money
@@toptiertech7291 If they have ANY hope for a successful IPO, they need this to go away now - the longer it festers, the more Reddit sinks into oblivion - I know I wont use Reddit while this CEO is still in charge ...
@@toptiertech7291 There isn't enough volunteer hours available to moderate a lot of the larger subs without the help of 3rd party tools. So even if they remove the mods and give someone else mod privliges they're not going to be able to moderate the sub according to Reddit's sub moderation standard so the subs will just be banned or unmoderated. Neither senario is a good one for Reddit.
It's actually facinating because Reddit has over the years made more and more rules for how subs need to be moderated which has made the user experience really great, but they've never provided mods with the tools needed to moderate subs according to those rules. Most communities that have been around for 5 years or more have done all nighters to make/configure 3rd party tools to moderate their community in accordance to new rules just because they're so passionate about the commuity and don't want to see it dissapear.
An update: Reddit is, in fact, forcing out uncooperative moderators and replacing them with people who will toe the line.
And the mods caved and reopen the subreddits, smh.
@@stickzilla Is anyone surprised? If we're being all the way honest, I'd say majority of these reddit mods don't have much else to feel important about in real life.
Wow, that is dystopian. Reddit has been anti-consumer for a while, especially how they are more and more aggressively pushing users to use their garbage app and before that the new layout. All because they want to maximize profits by leveraging their monopolistic power, while that profit is mostly user generated and moderated content which they pay zero for.
@@sinez999 partly that but also we'd kinda rather keep running our subs instead of reddit pretty much burning down our subs by putting mods in that don't know what they are doing. But I'm all for keeping subs closed and going down with the ship.
People said the same think when twitter monetized the blue tick. But Reddit got it absolutely right. They created a platform which is hella additctive and people spend way too much time on it.
In addition, the moderators are on their own power trip. So Reddit decided to make more money off these addicts and this is absolutely good business sense.
As a first-party Reddit app user, I was not too concerned about the other apps. However, after the Reddit CEO attemped to scape-goat the Apollo dev, then double down on it, and the how disrepectful he was toward the people in the blackout, I will wait another week (without going on Reddit) to see if there is any chances in their tone, if not then I will just going to delete my account.
delete your app then

I have almost never liked a video on UA-cam lol.
The reddit CEO is going about this whole situation terribly
He’s got it handled pretty well it seems like. On Reddit most people were more angry at the mods than Reddit. Because 99.9% of people just use Reddit normally
@@toptiertech7291but mods are unpaid labor. You don't have communities without mods.
@@toptiertech7291 This is not my exprience, but I guess it'll highly depend on the circles you're in.
Some angry teen that can't access their Roblox reddit is indeed likely to feel inconvenienced more so than others that have a good beat on exactly what is happening here.
From any metric of reason Reddit is handeling this whole thing excruciatingly bad. From the timeline of the API changes, to the charges they want (pulling a twitter after explicitly stating they wouldn't do so) to the disregard Spez has for his mods and by extention the users and even just basic integrity. Nothing about this is elegant.
And mods participate the most. So they're the biggest target for the API charge.
@@JohnKerbaugh why? People keep saying that buy why? What does a mod really do? Over react and ban people? You can literally have AI do all of that. Mods don’t set a community up. I can create a community right now. No problem. Not sure what you mean.

As a Swede I'm so happy to see Volvo (Polestar) getting more attention in the tech space. I really like Volvos design language and specs in general. Volvo will definitely be my first car if I ever get one.
It is a Chinese company now
As a neighbor, I love seeing them do well, unlike my fav, Saab, but still sad Volvo is now Chinese-owned. I would be a bit vary of pairing my phone with the car etc. if it "phones home". :(
Don’t get your hopes up, Volvo/polestar have been bought by a Chinese company years ago, it’s not the Volvo we loved anymore, just a shell of itself for the Chinese to penetrate the European market
I'm swedish too and I just saw on the news that they are boycotting Volvo here because Ukraine has blacklisted a Chinese Company that owns (part of?) Volvo. The boycott is by some officials, not just random people, but I don't know the right words in English unfortunately. Just thought it was interesting. Love Polestars design though!
one thing you missed about the new YPP requirements, that i think would be worth clarifying next week, is that the new lowered requirements don’t allow you to put ads on your videos, they just get you into fan funding such as super chats. you still have to get 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours for ads.
I think this is the most important thing they missed. Lower Requirements allow for other ways of funding, ads which is the biggest thing, is still the same.
Was looking for this comment - thanks! Yeah, massive context to the change, when you hear monetisation on UA-cam you naturally assume Adsense revenue. It's nice to see the change from UA-cam though, helping small channels with passionate fans and giving the creator a step towards qualifying for AdSense revenue at 4k watch hours and 1k subs (or the Shorts equivalent).
A small correction:
API calls need not to be single updates. One can aggregate all upvotes for upto 10 seconds and then make a call. It depends on how the app is written, and how much of a latency is an issue.
I think it’s a big hypocrisy that the Reddit CEOs has this attitude, Reddit doesn’t produce original Content everything on the website is links to other websites or user generated content.
He’s complaining about the third party apps bypassing reddit ads, when Reddit users regularly bypass pay walls to post other websites or creators contents.
Bingo!
Gotta hit that like button before I finish the pod, because we all know it's going to be another banger of a podcast.
same I do that always!
12 years on reddit, millions in comment karma, account deleted. Users like myself and others who comment didnt code the site or build the servers, but we are the ones who truly "built" reddit. The attitude that Huffman is taking towards the community is unnacceptable.
13 years on Reddit, 400k karma. Lots of contributions to subreddits that solve technical issues, console mods, Apple history... ALL DELETED. I will not let Reddit profit off of my knowledge while completely ignoring what the community wants. I don't plan on creating a new account until Huffman steps down.
guys, I think there's another way to go about it. Just saw a Louis Rossman video where users keep uploading GBs of videos to crash the site.
boycotts dont work very well unless a sufficiently large community of ppl engage in it. And u/spez has recognized it as noise because he knows we dont have too many options. I have stayed off for a while but heavens know there are some things you will never find on a google search. But yes. Users intentionally working to break a service is one where no investors will go to.
lmao this is cute
Thank you for covering the Reddit boycott - informative discussion - the Reddit CEO is a 2-faced jerk that should NOT be a CEO for such duplicitous anti-consumer behavior. Hold your ground Reddit fans and if they force moderator changes, they have dug their own grave and this much ill will for an IPO is a disaster ... quite literally the worst thing that could have happened. Cannot believe a CEO has that much disdain for his own community that buttered his bread for years - unreal.
I think you missed a dolphin noise at 1:05:37
Lmao imagine thinking a 2 faces jerk who fed plays anti consumer behavior SHOULNT be a CEO 😂😂
I would love a discussion around alternatives to Reddit that people could agree to start posting on. I've tried out a few like Squabbles and Tilde and they have potential but without the community that has been naturally grown on Reddit its tough to make a switch.
Maybe for a future waveform episode like when they discussed Twitter alternatives. Lemmy and kbin are also good reddit alternatives to try, and are part of the Fediverse
Anti-consumer behavior should never be rewarded - stay strong boycotters ...
You are not a consumer of social media. You are the product. Advertisers are the consumer. Reddit is about to IPO and to do so they need to generate disclosure and reporting documents that are approved by the SEC. Play Store and App Store figures provided by third party apps are one way to validate that reddit is reporting the right number of eyeballs. Reddit has to get rid of these apps so that it can count bot and sockpuppet activity as legit users and inflate their numbers for the IPO--just like Meta and Google have been doing for decades at this point. What is an "impression"?--it's horseshit. BigMouth Elon blurted out about bot activity when he was in negotiations to buy twitter and has been silent about it ever since--ever wonder why?
We can pretend Spez is an irrational moron, or we can figure out exactly what he's doing.
it's not as simple as it seems. Did you read the interview where Reddit expressed their opinion? There is a bunch of companies charging for the services and paying nothing to Reddit. How is that sustainable or just? do you have any idea of the price of AWS services? (you don't have to know, but it's expensive for big deployments).
@@jaimeduncan6167sure but the pricing structure was a “f*** you” price and not a reasonable price with reasonable margins. It’s a blatant attempt to pump user numbers before an IPO.
@@jaimeduncan6167 nobody is against actual charges. People are against them being too high. It's estimated that Reddit charges about 20 times more money per user, than it takes them to actually service the user themselves.
App developers would be plenty happy if the price was reduced 8 times or so - would be about in line with another service, such as Imgur.
Also, the official Reddit app is pretty crap, and Reddit also has been test-driving a new "feature" on their mobile website - inability to log in. Just to force users on the app.
Bad practices, high prices, bad UI/UX buggy app.
Reddit is not a product or a service. You are not paying for anything. It's not anti-consumer. It's bullshit but it's not anti-consumer. There are no customers or consumers, only users.
It's very interesting to hear the comparison of reddit with a centralized form of forums. It's reminds me of a technology from the early days of the internet which was called newsgroups, you could subscribe different topics and get your daily updates via your newsreader. Usually email programs supported newsgroups.
Newsgroups still around for pirates. So I hear..

Literally hate watching anything on twitch. It's such an awful experience.
its sooooooooooooo bad
Twitch's video player and style of ad placement (completely interrupting the content) is terrible. But Twitch's chat, game categories/browsing, discoverability for finding new streamers to watch, and their APIs, all that's great. UA-cam (at least for livestreams) has terrible chat, APIs, and discoverability/categories, but has an amazing video player. If I'm not chatting and I'm just going to passively watch then I definitely prefer watching on UA-cam, even just being able to scrub back a few minutes when I join a bit late and watch at 2x speed to catch up is amazing, but if I want to actually interact with the stream and chat (such as with the integrated polls, or all the interactive stream overlays where viewers can directly click parts of the video player to interact), or find a new streamer to watch and chat with, I'm going for Twitch.
@@Californ1a And it sucks that Marques kinda sounded like he was siding with YT > Twitch, despite the fact that I've found more people Faster on Twitch than I did even in YT Gaming's peak (which was, ironically, when it first started up IMO). Now I Have to scroll down to even get to YT Gaming and even then, I Have to do More digging for live channels. I kept trying to figure out the words to say in regards to how much less UA-cam cares for livestreaming than Twitch does. Like it's Painfully obvious when the best changes done to UA-cam [Livestreaming] is Super Chats & Donos/Tips.
It's honestly gonna be a struggle to see how things with livestreaming unfold. I vowed to stay away from watching Livestreams for about a year, but if Twitch does indeed come crumbling down...ooh boy...

Boom! Another episode drops! Thanks guys!
The eyes on the Marques's shirt and his microphone are really aligned well.
damn, its crazy how much youtube lowered the requirements for being eligible to profit off your channel. nice job youtube!
They already run ads on some non (creator) monetised content. Unfortunately this change to join the UA-cam Partner Program (YPP) won't unlock earning AdSense revenue for the creators, you'd still need 1,000 subs and 4k watch hours for that. This just allows access to things like Supers (Super Thanks etc), Channel Memberships, selling via UA-cam Shopping.
So true about the twitch v UA-cam thing. UA-cam can rest easy while Twitch constantly shoots itself in the foot. I think twitch will forever probably lead when it comes to livestreams but as a platform as a whole it won't catch the others anytime soon coz places like UA-cam offer so much more beyond the livestreaming
Another great podcast! I still think you guys should do an update to the intro/outdo video and even maybe music, Just to freshene things up. But no big deal. Doesn’t change the fact that this is always a GREAT pod

The Reddit situation is such a mess on their part. I can understand why they needed to make changes but the way they presented it was just so poorly done. Especially with the CEO continuing to double down on taking a stance against users.
It's interesting too the sheer amount of calld and tracking the first party Reddit app does when you look into it, its freaking insane, and honestly scary.

What is the best alternative? I hear users are switching to twitter. Is that right or are there also other platforms?
RIF is fun - for life
Not surprised Reddit is doing this - they're prepping for an IPO. Twitter did the exact same thing, kicked off the 3rd party apps, and they're doing fine. But to be fair, the OG Twitter app was always fine, just missing some features. The OG Reddit app has terrible UX, clunky, and full of ads.
Did you just say Twitter is doing fine? Twitter has turned into a cesspool of far-right meme bullshit and random hardcore porn replies to unrelated tweets. It's a dumpster fire. Moreso than before, anyway.
Full of ads is why they are doing this. 3rd party apps don’t make Reddit the ad revenue

I have a suspicion about why UA-cam doesn't try harder to compete against Twitch. Well, more than one idea.
1. UA-cam tried for a bit. They pushed UA-cam Gaming for a while there, and it just didn't take, despite their efforts.
2. I believe Twitch has rules saying your stream can't appear on any other platform until 24 hours after it airs on Twitch, so the transition path is not great.
3. The paid subscription model is just really different, and UA-cam probably didn't want to put in the work to make a comparable model that would pretty much just support gaming and similar streams.
4. UA-cam has a very different relationship with copyrighted audio than Twitch does. I think Twitch will let you stream songs that you don't have rights to, at least as a part of your audio, and they won't do much about it until replay (when they blank out the affected audio). UA-cam immediately gives the video revenue to the (claimed) rights holder, which means a streamer can accidentally lose the revenue for a whole stream.
5. Totally different channel / creator discovery models.
about UA-cam, you can upload a preview or trailer of the main video and then you could upload the behind-the-scenes version .....
The strength and reddit for me has always been the fact that these communities are so strong that the people who are part of them genuinely care enough that you get quick and accurate information about super specific topics. Quora also has a community of people who genuinely care about the topics they discuss or comment on because why would they be on core to begin with? The difference is they're way more people on Reddit. The responses are almost always immediate. It's honestly unparallel to any other platform that I've used. And I'm talking niche topics like something about an old board game or an old part from an antiquated piece of technology, or something more common like specifics about script writing. Whatever it is, I've always found genuinely passionate community of people who are willing to help and point you in the right direction and offer you information and guidance. And I think a big part of that are the moderators. Because of the moderators, the people that are part of subreddits are usually the people who care about the topic and they're not trolls.
I use the Blue Raspberry mic. Works really well.
I don’t think that UA-cam bands all third-party apps because you can only get third-party apps on kindle fire tablet.
This I believe is because Amazon didn’t want to load all of the Google apps on their version of android. But I don’t know if there is an official, API or companies just make one for themselves and I don’t know how official the Apps are on Kindle App Store. I think they just look the other way because it’s such a small market and it looks good to competition commissions to say that they allow this to happen. With android
the volvo "T" headlamps are called as Thor's hammer lights
I hope this question doesn't get lost in the comments....
So just out of curiosity, what happens to your old devices after you upgrade? (Old laptops or desktops or any of that) Do you all sell those or what do you do with them?
I am also curious
you were right about reddit just removing the moderators who are doing the blackouts
I think the big issue with the way we categorize social media is that we moved from "social network" platforms to the umbrella term "social media". And though I understand the days of MySpace are dead and Facebook for that matter, Social network should really be platforms where you build relationships, reconnect, establish community conversations. So today we have Twitter, Facebook, Reddit etc. Social media should be strictly places where you consume and create media in an online social platform. So UA-cam, Tick Tock, Crunchyroll (because it allows you to post comments which I feel like Netflix should have an option for) and Instagram. Then you have communication tools like WhatsApp that I believe can fall into the social network bucket. But even though most of these platforms are broadening the services they offer, there should be a clear distinction between UA-cam and Facebook or UA-cam and Twitter. UA-cam is just a place I consume content and the interactions in the comments section, although entertaining is secondary. By that definition, Facebook has moved from a social network to social media as well.
If anybody didn't understand what Andrew is saying at 44:00, David explains it much better just after that.
Twitch's size restriction, for context, 3% of a 1920x1080 stream is 250x250, decently sized but no idea why attempt to enforce restrictions.
Is it just me or does it feel like the podcast used Adobe Ai to refine the audio? I have used the software before and it changes your voice to sound just a tiny bit different. I'm getting that from Marques

They forgot to mention the Accessibility angle of the reddit issue. Disabled users of r/blind or r/deaf relied on third party apps because the official app was lacking.
I think twitch is better for the creator but as a viewer I prefer UA-cam. Twitch has too many ads and the ability to rewatch missed streams is such a hassle.
