- Live from Google I/O, it's Waveform! Okay, so it's not really live. But we did race right back to the hotel room after Google I/O to discuss all of the AI news and gadgets while it was still fresh. First, Marques, Andrew, and David talk about some of the more impressive AI news that Google announced before digging into the newly announced Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet. Enjoy!

I'm a scientist and we use Google workspace at work, everything from Gmail to Google deep consensus to analyze genomes. So a lot of this AI stuff is really cool, and I hope it sticks around. Because having an AI summarize an experiment for me or create a summary based off Google docs or sheets would be so sick

The level of effort to provide value is duly noted! Could have easily waited come back to the studio but no, they put in the effort to sit all that up in a hotel room means so much to this community. I have mentioned before everyday Friday I look forward to sitting down with a cheeseburger and watch this.
I just wanted to say thank you for going the extra mile always. I actually talk to academics at the university about information I have learnt via this podcast!
Just used Google labs this week for the first time to make a music quiz for my band class. The quiz was about 80% usable but after I tweaked it I was able to use it. As a teach I think this is pretty sick.

I'm actually that person without a smart watch and buying the Fold. Never was much into the foldable phone thing, especially because of the price. Because it's a Google device though, and I really enjoy Google UI, plus all of the Pixel exclusive features, I figured I'd give foldables a try. Getting a free smart watch was just an added bonus for me.

Your quality of a rushed hotel recorded podcast still manages to be at the high quality level I expect whenever I consume your content. You guys are incredible. Very inspirational level of professionalism/expertise.

As a bay area native, it's probably mostly real. It's not super uncommon to even just see ducks sitting next to people
@14:33 they did mention in the keynote that project tailwind will include citations for what it generates, so you can always fact check what it gave you by comapring it to where it pulled it from.
The Pixel Fold is so thin because of the bezels. They're putting components for the hinge behind there instead of behind the middle. It also allows them to put in a bigger selfie camera.

What was that charger you showed in the video that could charge all 3 devices? Finding a 3rd party charging station to work with the pixel watch is difficult
Are you using some kind of software editor which you all spoke about in one of the podcasts where the speaker will be centered in the frame? I can't remember the name but it's like some AI plugin in an editing software? The transitions are different from the usual episodes.
17:01 I've been using Bard to find artists with a similar artistic sound. It also does a good job at giving context, I've asked it what certain songs were about and it gives me a little brief.
Me being dyslexic AI has helped me greatly. I have always hated to write but now if I need to write something I have GPT start it off and I will read and edit. Writing was even painful but now it's not and I can express myself better.
What if the Pixel Tablet could dock in your car too and boot into android auto... They could sell a dock with all the standard hookups as a normal car stereo so you could replace it just like any other after market stereo system
I've pre-ordered the fold, to your point about everyone in the pixel ecosystem already having a watch. That's pretty much true, I'm going to give my pre-ordered pixel watch that comes with this fold to my mom who already also has a pixel 7 pro that I got for her.
I have a theory about the pixel 7a
And the A series in general since 6a
They may have taken the lower performing tensor chips which were clocked down due to some issues and decided to keep them for the cheaper phone while the regular pixels only get tensor chips which pass a certain spec
At 12:10 Object detection is in Samsungs too now. Even in S21 Ultra, you can hold any object in the picture to crop and drag.

I think the option to have the additional docks for the pixel tablet is a great idea (and think if they included Marques' idea of already having google assistant integrated into it would make it near perfect). I can see people having docks in their kitchen or office and also having one on their nightstand. So you're not moving docks - you just use the tablet as you need and have docks in rooms where you would utilize that feature. Great idea in my book. But will be a while before I move on from my Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 & S7's
@mkbhd I think the price of the Pixel 7a will make more sense when you make a forward comparison (vs. the expected Pixel 8) rather than a backward one (vs. the Pixel 7). I believe that the Pixel 8 will also see a price bump (to $649) and then the delta in price will be $150 again vs. the Pixel 7a.
Even if u think forward a $150 price bump in one year is a dumb decision as nobody will buy the 7a until the 7 is discontinued

For the AI photo metadata thing - what if every major camera app and photo editor started having an encrypted key in metadata that could be used to verify that this image was created or edited without AI? AI images made with other programs would then not be able to prove they weren't AI.
I think this would be a good way to at least be able to know when a photo was definitely *not* AI, though you couldn't prove that something definitely *was* AI.
One of the best Podcasts to listen to with some awesome production quality. The content is nerdy but very simple to understand as well.

Those photo edits are crazy, but most of them work for cell phone screen sized quality. That said, social media & messaging is all most people do with photos now so it is probably fine for the vast majority of users.

I pre ordered the Pixel fold, but I was wondering wondering if it necessary to get insurance on it. I had all the Samsung fold phones and never had insurance on them and have never had any issues with them, but I'm not sure about the Pixel fold?

The chainlink fence actually does work to remove, its just using magic eraser, but the annoying thing is that you have to hand select everything and it doesnt do it well
I believe the term "newer phones" was referring to phones that contain the Tensor SOC.
So the first thing I looked for when I saw this demo at Google I/o was if the editor would pick up on the shadow of the bench. I'm not going to lie. I'm impressed by what Google Photos can do right in the app without having to go to a dedicated photo editor like Photoshop, but I'm also a little bummed out that the shadow wasn't moved along with the bench. If you look, you can specifically see the shadow of the leg of the bench remains further back where the bench originally was.
Couldn't wait for this
It's very exciting what the tech can do, but I feel like I want my photos to capture the moment the way it was. Somehow I wouldn't feel attached to those photos as much if I know they were edited.
Was this edited with that AI podcast tool you guys talked about previously?

About the licensing fee on Find My Network, I'm pretty sure there is a licencing fee for Google as well. The already existing trackers from Tile are not supported in this network and only the new ones (which will be more expensive) are going to be supported. For example, Pebblebee has 3 versions of the same device. One for their own network that's 25, one for Apple's Find My that's 28 and the last one is Android's Find My Network that is also 28.
I've been thinking about this and was at first disappointed by the tensor G2 chip on the pixel fold. But the more I think about it the more I think Google did it to piggyback on the most successful selling pixel phone (p7) so the apps that were optimized for it can work well on the fold. Plus with the release of the 7a and pixel table that means the chip will be out there way more in the next 6+ months and, hopefully, more and more apps are going to get even better on devices running the G2 chip.
As an early adaptor and enthusiast, I can tell you that I happily deal with the bezels because I have purchased every Samsung fold except first one and never able to keep it (despite my enthusiasm) because of the aspect ration and bulkiness. My constant complain was that 80% of the time neither front screen and nor the big screen are right for use. This is why I am super excited about this because you can use the front cover for pretty much anything and fold display is for multitasking or just pleasure. The fact that it has Pixel UI instead of Samsung's (even thought it is much better now than it used to be) and it's flatness (when folded) and thinness are all gravy.
Also, the fact that Google apps (which is what I use for personal and work) are optimized for the fold is also a big deal.

Was the close up camera panning auto controlled utilizing mic feeds? Dare I say AI powered? I think a previous episode discussed a plug-in that could do that, but I thought that was for editing and not live recording.

I know they touch it very briefly around 1:02:40 but, folds having slightly sub par cameras compared to their sibling flagship is the number 1 reason I haven’t gotten a Fold yet.

Though my #1 complaint is actually the GARBAGE internal aspect ratio of all tablet-style foldable phones like the Z Fold 4, Vivo X Fold 2, Huawei Mate X3, Oppo Find N2, etc.
My Galaxy S23 Ultra can literally see more content during web browsing, gaming, and watching 16:9/21:9 videos with minimal black bars vs the internal foldable displays of the phones I mentioned above.
Galaxy Flex S aka Galaxy Z Flex is what a foldable phone SHOULD BE. 😎👍

Why Google was not using it's own image gen(imagen) tool is because of the copyright issues. Adobe Firefly is trained on images which are all licensed by Adobe.

HoneyComb came installed on the Motorola Zoom. I had one.
Also the Pixel Fold, I pre-ordered. And I traded in my Z Fold 4 to make the price less painful. I love the PF form factor and do not like the Z Fold 4 form factor. I also think the likelihood of getting Tablet optimized apps is higher with Google in the foldable fray now.

The hard problem with making invisible watermarks is two-fold. First, it would be extremely difficult to make a generalized watermark that can be adopted by others; it would have to be an open standard and that also means that bad actors can potentially thwart it.
Secondly, for AI generated images, sound, and other digital assets, lossy compression is going to make invisible watermarks much more difficult. It would probably be comparatively easier with generated text since compression in this sense would mean to potentially remove words, context and meaning.
Image steganography has been around for a long time and been used for watermarking as well, but has these limitations as well. The subject is interesting, though.
I think Chipolo has their own Android versions of AirTags. They are called the ONE Point and CARD Point.
Pixel Tablet also has Chromecast built in.
I was very excited for Fold but it is not released in Australia. 😑
