- Alright, time to dive into some BRAND NEW Encanto theory territory! I'm getting real and talking about actual Colombian history today (to the best of my ability at least. ^^; ) Yup, with Encanto being confirmed as a future franchise by Disney and the likelihood of an Encanto series and/or sequel looking brighter than ever, I wanted to theorize what exactly the Madrigals might see if they ever decide to leave the Encanto for some adventures! What's Colombia been up to while they've been hiding away? Should Abuela Mirabel Luisa Bruno Camilo Dolores and the rest even bother leaving? Or is it safer to just stay put for a while? Well, here are the findings from the research I did! Let's see what we've got!
P.S. This is the first video where I document real life history and I did run into a lot of conflicting sources while doing my research. If I get any facts wrong, I apologize and I'll be sure to correct myself in a pinned comment if I am wrong.
P.S.S. Glad to see you guys are still enjoying the Encanto videos. Not sure how many more I have in me, but I do still enjoy making them! Maybe I'll tackle stuff like the songs or the potential series at some point if you guys wanna see that!

Outside Encanto the Madrigals' gifts would be seen as some kind of danger, weapon, or dark magic, since no one out there knows about their backstory. The Encanto seems like a very religious town, with churches and a priest, but the community doesn't seems to see them as threats. Maybe the town's priest considers Pedro and Alma as saints and their Miracle as a gift from God.
I always thought that. At first i assumed it was another "Magic exist but religion is the same" cliche but how everyone refers to it as a miracle and Mirabel's solo being seen as some prayer made me think it's part of their village belief
They will need to make the people outside trust them, slowly they will earn their trust

What if they tried their best to keep their gifts a secret from everyone in wherever they're going, and then suddenly Pepa causes a hurricane and the townspeople find out their big secret? After that they're shunned from the town. Or maybe some other event happens that causes the townspeople to get suspicious. Antonio is busted talking with an animal or Julieta is investigated for having healing foods?
It would be interesting to see how the Madrigals with gifts might feel like outcasts in comparison to the ordinary majority of the outside world while Mirabel is viewed as the normal one.

Really hoping for a Disney + series. Probably the thing we could get most Madrigal Shenanigans on, as opposed to a handful of shorts or a new movie

Personally I think that a tv show is superior to a full on sequel, as the arc of the madrigals has already reached its logical conclusion, so there would be barely anywhere to go in a sequel, while a chill disney+ show or series of shorts could show the madrigals tackle smaller, day-by-day concerns. Love the content by the way
I have a feeling they'll go the TV route anyway, seeing the Tiana and Moana series coming up.

A think the Magic could also be expanded (not explained). The theme could be coming to age and the perception that leaving home to go to your own Path isnt a bad thing, for both parents and childrem.
Actually, I think that should be Isabella's arc for the next movie. Falling in love with a man from another city, and having to talk it out with everyone that leaving to join/form a new Encanto is not a bad thing... especially since they're going to get this new "telephone" thing installed, and the cars make the commute to visit a couple times a year easier than ever.

It could also be focused in what Mirabel wants to do. She's accepted by the family and they're fine, now what? The sisters can bond in this scenario, leaving Luisa to do... What? I would like the "fall in love plotline" to go to her instead. Of all three sisters, I think Luisa would have a harder time leaving, more than Mirabel.
It would be good if they find their extended relative cause remember alma and abuelo escaped colombia and establish encanto but what about their first family i.e siblings, parents, cousin
some thing i think would be cool is if they met a family where everyone was cursed rather than blessed and maybe bruno and miribel have a crush on some one in it that could be fun
I was thinking about that. Something like the Finch's from What Remains Of Edith Finch where the family members are cursed to die in horrible ways.
I would LOVE for Encanto to get it’s own Disney channel or Disney+ series! I liked the idea that it would be 2D animated and the art style could be similar to the art style of the concept art of the movie or the art style of the painting of the madrigals in the village. I can also see not only the Madrigals leaving the encanto to explore (like a vacation) I also like the idea of travelers or tourists stumbling upon the Encanto and those travelers could spread the word about the encanto then the village would be an awesome tourist spot. Maybe some people might move in with the village or become friends with some of the Madrigals. New travelers coming in would make amazing character potential, like maybe they can be a villain or a love interest or just another acquaintance.

I love the video as usual. But how would they handle their powers in the "real world" people would likely try to take control and use them for political or other types of conflicts. Plus in many movies before we all know that if people don't understand something they instantaneously will assume it's the enemy. How would they deal with that?
Imagine its like the who hotel transylvania thing where Abuela tries to warn them to not leave the encanto because shes still afraid for their safety, then they get chased out of the town, back to the encanto, heck a whole musical number could come from a violent chase scene! but, this would go against abuelas character development of "hanging on too tight" but hey, its possible!
@@tracerracer1003 Yeah, Abuela saying so wouldn't be unbelievable. I think that an obvious theme for any follow-up stories would be the path of recovery from trauma. At the end of the movie, things weren't "perfect" again between the family members, but they recognized the problems in their family and why things turned out the way they did. So in the potential follow-up, they could show the individual members trying to change the bad habits that formed over the years. And of course it wouldn't be easy. Pepa for example trying to address WHY she has a cloud, instead of constantly repressing her emotions. Or Abuela, like you said, trying to not control her family, trying to listen more, sometimes slipping back into these habits but stopping midway. There would have be a lot of arguments to catch up on. One does not simply stop being the matriarch who runs this show.

alma was 20 when she lost pèdro, and she’s 70 now, soo.... when she says: “50 years ago” that is correct. also, here are all the ages:
Antonio: 5 years old.
Camilo and Mirabel: both 15 years old.
Louisa: 19 years old.
Isabela and Dolores: both 21 years old.
Augustin and Fèlix: both around 40-47 years old.
Julieta, Bruno and Pèpa: all 50 years old.
Alma: 70-74 years old.

edit: Camilo and Mirabel have a few months (probably 3-5 months) gap. so Camilo is technically older by a few months)
Grandmother Alma lost Pedro at 25, and she's 75 now. Also, Agustín is about 48 and Félix about 53, as we know that Félix is slightly older than the triplets and Agustín is slightly younger than them.
I feel like Camilo would want to be the first one to leave the encanto. I think everyone else would just want to stay home, but leave only sometimes to go camping or go somewhere and travel then just come back to the encanto again and do it sometime next year too, but I feel like Camilo's wild spirit would just want to literly leave, mabye he could unlock a different side of his powers so he could transform into animals since he only transforms into different humans in the movie, and even if it isn't safe outside the encanto he would be the only one that could actually be safe out there if he grew his powers to turn into animald he could just be a chettah or something and go anywhere he wants without being hurt or killed, and he could come visit his family sometimes.
Alot of people want Camilo to have a girlfriend, and I guess I dont hate that theory but i dont like it either, yes hes a teen and I could think of him as the flirt type but not every teenager wants to do that stuff, especially Camilo, he just cares about his family and protecting them. This movie is more about family then true love, especially now since the family is caring about themself more he could try caring about bow he feels and what his goals are too.
I always had the idea that maybe have the madrigals meet another family that may have been blessed with a miracle

Most people think the community was escaping from the 1000 day war in the beginning, hence the current time in the movie being 1950. This places them in the middle of the cold war. I would imagine America would go check it out if A MOUNTAIN BROKE IN HALF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE COLD WAR!

if they were ever to leave their home and went onto some other place, would their gifts fade out?
Dunno maybe not but after sometime maybe fade if they didn't visit/come back
I feel like if they left it'd be more like maybe once as a whole family and in later episodes be a place that indivisual characters can go back to and side note I feel like Augustin is a real city boy I kinda assumed he stumbles upon the encanto and never left but i dont know if that makes sense that abuela would let him marry her favorite daughter then, I just get the sense he'd really vibe with the city . Another thing I thought of is how much Isabela would love it because she can fade into the crowd more and with so many diffrent people she less "special" and perfect.
You know going forward you could do both you could do storys all centralize in the enconto. like mirabel helping bruno reconnect to the town, and at the end she at the river, and she sees lights on the horizon.
With each episode going like that with the lights getting brighter, or Delores hearing sounds, and voices on the other sides of the river.
Later Antonio animals telling him they saw people. all leading up to Delores wedding at the river where group of strangers appear lead by a familiar old man and then the story really begins.
If they want happy... Alma's husband is still alive. (But it's HEAVILY implied that he's dead.)
If they want bittersweet, the captain of that unit is now a general, and respects the man who sacrificed himself to save his family and friends, and both him and Alma reconcile enough to put the past behind them.
Maybe they’ll explore the outside world in a possible tv series?
I'm glad you did your reaserch on the historical background of Colombia as many people belive that what happened to abuela alma was due to colonizers when its highlighting some very real issues that are still present here today, as a Colombian it means a lot to me. also fun fact our entire independence is thanks to a flower vase.
Another possibility for a hypothetical Encanto 2 is instead of the family leaving the Encanto, people will be going to the Encanto instead and with context of La Violencia being set in the 1950s, the people are most likely trying to escape the war and found the refuge by accident. Also there might be people outside the encanto that had their own legends and stories about what lies beyond the mountain range, where some might probably be the opposite of what is inside of the encanto (example: scary creatures lurking within). But then when certain people end up in there they'd be shocked and surprised at not just how an entire town was there, but by the fact that the town itself feels like they have been living in another decade, which is exactly what is happening. Then ofcourse we would get a scenario that's a bit like how Johnny from Hotel Transylvania, who is a representative of the people from the current time period, came to the hotel that has been operating for centuries while hiding themselves from the humans outside. But this time instead of those people just going there on a whim, they bring with them their experiences of this other war that would bring back that trauma to abuela and later on maybe... just maybe, those people will be adopted as madrigals and they will receive gifts in which they will use to fend for themselves and the people of the encanto against the people that were after them.
So, about using present technology to date the movie's events:
I would take any technology referenced by Bruno with a grain of salt - particularly the television/telenovas.
Bruno is able to see into the future and might have been doing very far "readings during his spare time in exile.
He very well may be pulling a "Genie" gag from Aladdin with the amount of magical info he has access to.
La Violencia could be a good theme for season 1 and Isabella falls in love with a soldier
I still think Isabela should stay single tbh, or at least stay single until much later in the series, it makes sense for her character that the movie wanted to portray
This storyline would fit Luisa better. Breaking the streotype of physically fit women not finding a romantic partner. Luisa deserves some love so a soldier being in awe of her strength and going all goey goey for him.
i still think that it's a bit too dangerous to go outside of the encanto because i feel like that some might get injuried and die during a war.
They missed both world wars, both because Colombia never participated anyway and because of isolation, but they're in the middle of the cold war in the time. I'm kinda expecting a sequel where America checks in on the cracked mountain like "... Hello?"

I think Encanto plays way closer to Modern Day, due to 2 things. The film establishes that they were isolated for 50 years, so no influx of outside technology and news. While telenovelas (from 1959 in Colombia) are mentioned and no Radio Receivers (circa 1920s) & TVs are shown, there is one historical reference that people isolated since circa 1902, with no outside communication, shouldn't be able to make. Luisa references the "Titanic Disaster" from 1912. So I would suggest that they self-isolated after La Violencia (1948-1958), which should place Encanto around 1998-2008.
That's interesting! But the movie was really made to sugest beginning of XX century. There's concept art of a mural about Pedro's sacrifice, and the date of his date is 1902. And also the clothes the characters are wearing are traditional-folkloric; you wouldn't see people wearing it on a daily basis today, not even in remote towns. We wear jeans and t-shirts lol. But 70 - 60 years ago, sure, bring on the dresses that inspired the clothes of the movie. Luisa's song references were more the anachronic narrative device Disney have done before (Genie from Aladdin, i.e.), something for the audience to understand and enjoy.

I'd love a TV show, because it's so much time and space to play around with.
I personally would prefer a sequel series cause I think you can do alot more with many short or a few moments/episodes to discover the characters. I'm not personally into the world building but it may be good
If a series exists , that means that the movie would be a 4 part pilot episode.
I do enjoy how you actually brought up history, most theory channels I know I would watch would just be like "ya we gonna ignore it because they can just write that off since is cartoon" despite.. Encanto literally referencing bits of history..

I feel like they should make a series and at first give some more character development and screen time for some of the characters and focus on all their realtionships with each other and have them go outside the encanto later on in like a second season.

As for the “is it safe?” part I'd answer before even thinking: no! The government would want to exploit their gifts, other towns would want to invade, and a myriad of other social and cultural problems would arise. To me they should be extremely careful if they want to venture out
I think actually would be very interesting to see they bringing up La Violência. All the Madrigal's powers were gifts to help the family survive war, so I think it would be interesting if the Encanto started to protect near villages and become a refugie for new runaways.
I would prefer a series over another movie. Lately I watched a lot of "big-plot series", but encanto could just show day-to-day scenarios with no big bad. Just, time passing, exploring the characters, their future prospects, recovering from generational trauma after recognizing the overall problems in their family during the movie. Lot's of bad habits and past mistakes that need confronting. Mostly between Abuela and everyone else, but also between others. Lessons in communication can be an ongoing theme, as many small and big things previously ignored now get noticed and asked about. "Is this normal? How did it get like this? Why didn't you tell me?" Oh, and of course the villagers can't be ignored either, especially if there was - in this hypothetical series - an episode or ten about overworking yourself, burnout, saying no etc.
Some examples for possible character arcs would be:
Pepa learning to tell people Why she has a cloud to begin with, Julieta drawing the line at smaller injuries (her definition of "small" becoming bolder with the support of her family, as she gets a taste of freetime - she really is Luisas mother), and Bruno - where do I begin with Bruno? There's "Socialising after extended isolation", "Fixing/Dealing with a bad public image", probably lots of "bullying that you learned to accept over the years but now that you're back you are surprised by the fierce protectiveness of your family as they finally understand that you're just a lovable misunderstood weirdo and anyone who looks at you wrong has to deal with not only consequences of their own actions but also the projected guilt and fear of pushing you away in the first place."
I'm not saying anything new here, I just like getting my headcannons out there. For example, the gifts could also be explored a bit, though not nearly as much as the person holding it. Like that headcannon about camilo needing to eat more the more he shifts? It likely wouldn't be cannon, but yeah, details like that. What are the mechanics of some gifts? How does it reflect a persons mental state? Can Isabela control any plant or does she just summon them? Does she need to know the plant she creates or does she research any new species popping up in her room? To which extent can she manipulate a plants' properties (size, age, colour)?

Given the timing of La Violencia, it might be too dangerous for anyone to leave the Encanto during that time period. However, what if the Encanto - the actual miracle - didn't just raise the mountains, but also created a time pocket. To the villagers, time seems to move normally, but outside the Encanto, beyond the mountains, time moved just a little faster. Enough to be far enough after La Violencia that leaving wouldn't put them in quite as much danger.
Maybe the Encanto might have some alternate timelines and some realistic timelines that happened in the real world what you said maybe they could just make an alternate timeline where some wars never started and the Encanto can somehow be its own timeline
Another great Encanto theory video! Although, your sequel concept trailer isn't terrible. In fact, if Screen Junkies wanted a special guest for an Encanto Honest Trailer, they should definitely consider hiring you!

Unfortunately Encanto is set in is where Colombia enters another chaos era which has been going on and off since 1948 to this day. So the only way to leave the Encanto if they are going for realism is via magical doors. It they can take creative liberties and say the whole issue was resolved.
Personally, I would prefer if Encanto ever gets continued (though frankly I am nervous that no sequel or series can live up to the original) it stays in the Encanto. As small and isolated of a town it is, there is plenty to do and see there even after the first film. Most of the movie was spent in la Casita, so we really did not get much of a chance to get to know the townspeople, the town itself, and the cultured they created while isolated from the rest of the country for 50 years. I think that would be much more fascinating than them going into the city (and this is coming from a girl who got to see the beautiful city of Medellin a few years ago).
It certainly would be interesting to speculate the Encanto cast leaving their casita, but there's also a LOT of potential too. The overall moral or theme of the story could be something along the lines of “Home is where your family is”. Casita is a special part of the madrigal family, but maybe the main cast could somehow take their house with them. We're still not 100% sure how this magic works, and maybe they could take casita with them like Hooty in The Owl House. There could be a lot of speculation in the sense that the madrigals probably have never been outside their encanto in HALF A CENTURY!!! Maybe Mirabel is the new Abuela and the main cast’s descendants have screen time now. There are A LOT of possibilities!!!!!
They could do a blend, like "other families fleeing La Violencia find their way in the Encanto, and Oh No! We were separated from Uncle Esteban's group, we have to go back to get them!"
I did have a thought that I feel many have missed when speculating about Encanto's date, which leads me to believe that Alma received the miracle during La Violencia. In the opening song, we see Luisa using Casita as a treadmill while she's holding dumbbells. While technically they were invented in the 17th century, dumbbells weren't actually popularized until the 80's. Telenovelas were also rather obscure before becoming mainstream in the 90's. However, this theory isn't perfect, due to how old all featured technology is in the movie, but it's possible that that could be chalked up to this area being rural and underdeveloped due to the whole isolation thing. While a flawed theory in some areas, the movie COULD take place in the late 90's - early 2000's.

i can see some interesting ideas for a tv show of encanto: maybe when mirabel restored the magic other houses started manifesting gifts, even on the adults, a magical town instead of a magical house, encanto is the name of the town after all. another one would be to leave the encanto maybe mirabel manifests teleportation or something and they find themselves traveling to all the iconic places of colombia, the lost city, the guajira desert, piedra del peñol, the walled city of cartagena, and more it would be interesting how stranger react to their gifts, or if they choose to be quiet about it

I see where your going with your idea finntheponey and honestly I like it because it makes sense. It would be nice if they make a series out of encanto that slowly shows some side stories that explores the characters background or how they evolve in the aftermath. While the madrigals vacation during the 1950’s would be a bit interesting later in the series but I was thinking, what would happen if someone were to come to the encanto and that person came from the other side of the crack. It would be good to see how the villagers of the encanto would react with a new traveler. But we’ll just have to see what Disney do later on and hope for the best.
It’s a complicated dilemma to come up with a driving force to have the family leave the Encanto (we can all agree that they shouldn’t lose their home again) maybe we could have someone from the outside come in the Encanto? Like for example, have scraped character of Isabella’s boyfriend come in the picture (except not have him as her boyfriend)
I have a creativity demon where soldiers find the encanto and one soldier in particular is rescued by Mirabel and Co and I don't want to tell the rest but it would be an epic story.

i 100% would prefer a series like just shorts maybe. there could be like 2 minute shorts that just show more of the characters and personalities. i personally think that the main reason encanto is so popular is bc of the characters so it would be nice just to have little shorts without making it feel like the producers are milking it to much. i think it would be a little weird with a with a whole second movie.
edit: i like finn’s ideas with camilo acting and stuff so those could be some good ideas for episodes!

You do know that Mirabel is a wordplay on the word Miracle just like Madrigal is a wordplay on Magical?
I think a good story is that raiders find the Encanto and takes the family but using her new magic Mirabel escapes. Unable to leave the Encanto the casita opens magical portal for Mirabel to cross. But they do from within the walls. This way Mirabel hears where her family is and this opens the door for crossover
One thing I don’t want is them to go on a road trip, that’s for sure
It'd be interesting, but we'd also have to consider the consequences of them leaving. The rest of the world wouldn't have known of the Encanto or their magic before they did so, and if they plan to reintroduce themselves to everyone else that might trigger some wariness from the latter 😟

If you avoid sun exposure you avoid a lot of the visual signs of aging, and I think it's very safe to say Bruno hasn't faced much sun exposure for the past decade.
IF a war is going on outside (likely), you get a nice dynamic between people wanting to explore the greater world and those who are fearful. Trite version: Abuela is against leaving/exploring and Mirabel is for it. Interesting version: MIRABEL is against it and Abuela is for it. Look, Mirabel has finally found her spot, she's the guardian of the family now, and has a sort of magic (Casita). Abuela, on the other hand, has a much broader experience and knows you can't keep the world out forever. Especially with that big ol' crack there. Let's say NEW refugees come in and, while they are welcomed and given shelter, they highlight that Magic Valley isn't infinite in size. Conflict ensues (inside the family and possibly between the refugees and originals). One of the refugees, either through naivete or malice, leaves and clues Seemingly Evil General that there's a great resource there. Maybe even make him sympathetic but still willing to sacrifice others because he doesn't see any other options. (He's still the villain, don't get me wrong... just a relatable one). The greater conflict helps solidify the family once again but ALSO brings the original and new settlers together. In the end, the villain is either defeated or reformed (either works).

I don’t think they can leave and keep their gifts… Bruno moved out of his room to the walls and lost his gift. I think if they left they would loose their gifts.
The plot you mentioned around 10:00 sounds like the plot to season 1 of Tangled the series
mirabel becomes the next candle holder because abuela could leave the encanto to look for the other characters, but the family comes looking for her. and afterwards, dolores and marianos wedding lolol
I think that encantwo would be better than a disney+ show because I'm not sure if Lin Manuel Miranda can handle making songs for a series and the songs are a big part of what made Encanto so good
The movie isn't clear as to if the Encanto was impassable. Bruno says he didn't leave because the mountains surrounding the Encanto were pretty tall, but that doesn't mean they couldn't be passed. After casita crumbles, a mountain is cleaved open...allowing access to the river where the miracle first appeared. It would stand to reason that now, people could enter and leave the Encanto if they were determined enough to try...and it was likely always possible if someone was determined enough. After all, where did they get an optician to make eyeglasses or a priest younger than Abuela?

Something I thought the movie could improve upon was the fact that there was just not enough time for the number of characters they had. The characters were amazing but so many of them had wasted potential and I would 100% argue Encanto should have been a series instead of a movie.
I'd like to see Encanto 2 or an Encanto series but Abuela is gone and Mirabel is the new candle holder. It would have her children and her cousins' and sisters' children.

Plus it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if Disney were to add a historical death count. I mean have you seen the potential death counts from the previous movies. Heck MatPat from Film theory made 3 videos about Disney’s death count.
I would think it would be too bad and take too much time to make a movie so instead I think they should make a series about each characters life so it wouldn't be too much information to not have theories but be just enough. Plus if they did make a movie what would it be about bc it doesn't really give anything to wonder without making it where people cant have theories and enjoy it as much as the first one.
Personally I don't want a sequel to Encanto purely because it doesn't need one. If the creators did a series that dwells more into the world I would like that more. Every character could get their own episode, development, and problems.
I think a second movie or a tv show about a separate madrigal family would be cool , like Alma and maybe another woman named Amy were separated at birth and Amy had her own madrigal family full of scrapped characters and somehow finds the madrigal family

This TV show idea with the first season staying within the original bounds of the movie and the second season having the main characters venture out into the world sounds alot like a specific TV show on Disney plus called "Tangled the Series". Just a feeling...

I really hope that they would be a show and it went like one of the madrigal families got sick and Julieta cooking could not cure him/her so they search the cure but its outside of the encanto or something so the family ventures out and I want one of the madrigal familys member get a love interest outside the encanto and thats all i need.............. Also i want Dolores to already married the guy and have a baby one one year old and this time period is like 3 years after the encanto movie :)
Before I watch this video, I'll leave this comment. I saw Once upon a time and I think Encanto is a very similar place to Storybrooke. I just have a feeling that the residents are not allowed to leave Encanto, and if any of the Madrigals went and managed to go away, I think they would lose their powers in the outside world.

my must is that the first season should be during all of you. during the rebuilding of the casita. this is the only time they can tell the story of the family dealing with losing their powers, without jeopardizing the ending.
