As Bruno's prophecy for Isabella, "the life of my dreams would be promised and one day be mine," and "my powers will grow like the grapes that thrive on the vine," both show up starting in that sequence of the movie. She felt forced to be perfect, when she just wanted to be herself and not have to be perfect. Thus by letting herself be free, her powers did start to grow and thrive.

I find it sad that Mirabell couldn’t see her gift was RIGHT in front of her. I was only 30mins in to the movie shouting “You’re the ONLY ONE the house communicates with!!”. Other family members talked to Casita (a little) but Casita ONLY spoke back to Mirabel. To the point where she can whisper to Casita and Casita would respond. Other than the pressure from Aubela, I feel like the house crumbled b/c Mirabel didn’t BELIEVE in the gift that was right at her fingertips. She felt like she had to dance perfectly and get perfect grades and do everything perfect in her EC's to get into a good college bc that was what her mother wanted for her, and the pressure caused her to be so nervous she picked her skin, didn't eat/was actively afraid to eat sometimes, and had trouble sleeping. My husband actually grew up having a huge house with a spiral staircase, rooftop gathering area, and top-of- the-line games and electronics. His dad is a doctor specializing in dermatology.
When I first saw my husband's childhood home, I thought he was a spoiled, little rich boy who just gamed all day. Now I see that while his father was beloved by the community, he was a horrible, controlling, cheating husband, and an even more absent father. My mother-in-law would cry, sleep, and have fits of rage daily for the first 17 years of my husband's life.
There's so much more to the story, but what I realized is wealth is not everything. My husband always says he would trade all the gifts in his life just for his dad to be there, and to care for him and his mother.
Anyways, things are much better now and we don't associate at all with my father-in-law, and my mother-in-law has found peace, and is the sweetest woman.

It actually created the exact contrary result and i’m even more disappointing my dad now because as i was trying to heal from that, i became overweight, did so much anxiety and insomnia that i didn’t finish my degree (i eventually did another one in graphic design but just a year long and as you can imagine, that’s no way near the doctorate my parents wanted me to have). Isabela’s room is also an endless sea of pink and pastels. Pretty, but also lonely. A symptom of perfection is that one chases away others who fear judgement from you and your own seeming-narcissism towards anything slightly negative. A total opposite to Mirabel’s bed in the nursery, which is decorated with her many pictures of the village.
And there are other theories behind Isabela’s anger towards Mirabel. Isabela was jealous of her sister’s freedom of no expectations and angry Mirabel didn’t value that. Mirabel being the black sheep of the family, was a perfect vessel to funnel frustrations towards even when undeserved. Or whenever Mirabel messed up, Isabela was ever more pressured to be perfect in that sense of “learn from their mistakes and don’t be like (insert person)”
A theory behind Alma’s treatment of her family was that she focused on the candle and magic and giving back to the community as a coping mechanism for her trauma, until that became maladaptive. The candle became all Alma cared about as she forgot why her family received this gift

  • @kaoryakasaka6835

Also someone pointed out that the very morning after Antonio got his gift, abuela Alma already said "I'm sure we'll put your gift to good use" without letting him just enjoy it. He got his gift because he loved animals a lot and Mirabel even made him a plushie. Maybe Isabela was also really into gardening and flowers as a kid, but didn't get to enjoy it, since it was "put to good use" pretty quickly. "What else can I do?" is probably her reclaiming her passion for plants she once had.

Nothing makes it okay, to make a child feel like they are worthless. I can understand why it happens, but it is never okay. People don't even realize it when they do this. The effects can last a lifetime. I know this from my childhood. My parents divorced when I was seven, and my mom and brothers wound up dumped on relatives that made it very clear to me, that I was just a burden, that they didn't want to have around. Even when they tried to be nice, it was almost always condescending. I was never good enough, no matter how hard I tried. So I was a little boy, that felt like Isabela.
When I got older I was very good at learning things and fixing things. Then I was only seen as useful, for repairing electrical wiring, to things like TV sets, and cars and appliances, and working on relatives houses for them. Then I was a pre-teen, and teenager that felt like Luisa. This carried on all my life. I was really only invited around to fix things for family.I felt like I couldn't disappoint anyone. I was always under enormous pressure to be able to repair anything, constantly asked for help, but never asked if I needed any help.
This is why I relate to Encanto so well.

For me, I think that Abuela only put pressure on her family because of what she had in her past. My theory is that Abuela believed that if she puts pressure on her family now, in the future, when she disappears, her family will have a great life because e of all the hard work they have done when they were younger and Abuela was still with them. Even though I know that Abuela gave her family a burden, I don't think that she is the antagonist in the movie. She only really didn't pay attention to Mirabel before the near ending of the movie, because she didn't want Mirabel "ruining" all the hard work her family did, and I don't think Abuela only wanted Isabela to marry Mariano because he was perfect and the most handsome man, I believe it's because he resembles Abuelo Pedro so much. And since Abuela DID see herself in Isabela, she just wanted to give Isabela the perfect life that Abuela always wanted when she was younger.
Bute it is just my opinion though.
And if you made it here at the end,
    Congrats 😂
    bye

What I really like about this movie is that nobody was really the antagonist. They were all just family members trying to deal with their problems in ways they felt was right. Isabela and Abuela both realized they were wrong to blame Mirabel for the family's problems.

Isabella was always my favourite character. A perfect child that had problems and learned to let go. It WAS the same for my best friend. I was the "perfect" daughter always getting good grades but my parents didnt have high expectations at all. Meanwhile my friends parents had high expectations and never was able to be good enough for them. She befriended me and looked up to me as some type of god for the first few days. But eventually she learned Im just as human as she was. We learned alot about each other over the past 3 years. But her parents hated me. PURELY because I was better. And because I also cause some, okay alot of "bad" stuff. Hey the "perfect" girl just wanna have some fun sometimes.

Isabella is supposed to represent the apparent perfection of the whole family. The curtains are like a reminder of the secrecy that keeps every member of the family from talking about the hardships, the pressure, etc. It’s a picture of the hypocrisy they are all stuck in because of the need to appear perfect to everybody on the outside. Mirabela’s gift is actually being able to cut through all that crap and reveal the reality, thus allowing real relationships and authenticity in the family and with the outside. That’s why she doesn’t need a magic door. It’s not a trick or an illusion. It’s the power to live in reality, accept it and make the most of it.

Tbh I think the reason why Isabella didn't like Mirabel is because she felt like Mirabel was able to live the life of freedom and mistakes that she isn't able to live because of the pressures of being perfect. That in itself is frustrating seeing your younger sibling be able to live a life you wish you could which is why she was constantly so rude to Mirabel. It was so stressful and hard work to please Abuela and the family. This is why when Mirabel calls her 'selfish' when she confronts her in her room, Isabella immediately flies in a rage. How could someone call you selfish if everything you've been doing as been for everyone, *but yourself* and for years? How could anyone not get upset hearing that especially from someone who has had to freedom to figure out their identity and not be given an identity like Isabella was by Abuela.

I think so too. I’ve heard it from people irl too. Not about being perfect, but I’ve definitely heard from people who follow expectations set before them, sometimes they envy others who rebel or do not care about the expectations. People who are resilient and brave enough to go about their own lives and tell anyone else to “F*** off” who give them ire for their choice.

I just looked up the flower language for jacaranda, because it made me wonder if it had any significance since it had such an emphasis in Wjat Else I can Do, and some of the meanings I found were "The tree represents wisdom, rebirth, wealth and good luck."
"Wisdom" as she opened her eyes to what else she was capable of (outside of what was expected of her), "rebirth" as she rediscovers herself like being born anew, "wealth" I guess can be attributed to how her powers have grown beyond just rows and rows of roses, and "good luck" as she goes down this newfound path for herself.
I dunno how accurate this info is but I like to think it fits rather well ♥

It felt as if they were saying: "You don't need any special gifts. Being normal and well-intentioned is more than enough.... BUT! If you live up to unrealistic standard, it's better." This makes it even more sad, considering that Isabella was never as happy, as when she had no powers.

The question of whether what Abuela did was wrong depends a lot on how you view moral philosophy. Consequensialists believe that intention matters very little and if what you did hurt someone, then it doesn't matter why or if you even knew what you were doing was hurting others, you are in the wrong. I can't remember what they're called, but there's a group that puts a lot of value on intent. If you didn't even know you were hurting people how could you correct your behaviour? You are still in the wrong but you maybe don't deserve the ninth degree. Some people think that if you're not honest about your feelings and then someone hurts them because they didn't know that you didn't like that YOU are actually in the wrong so, they'd probably put some blame on the family too, not just Abuela. It's a really interesting topic :)

The flower pluck from the hair is a hint at the progression of the family line too. Abuela removes the only white flower from Isabella's hair; white being the symbol for virginity. When a woman loses her virginity, it's (a little crudely) said that she's been 'deflowered'.
Abuela removes the white flower right after the 'He wants 5 babies" remark from Dolores. A hint that she's seeing Isabella 'next step' in Abuela's plans.

Maybe slightly beside the topic, but I've seen several people comment in various places how Isabela nor anyone else never apologized to Mirabel for how they treated her before. And I just don't see it that way because, as they say, talk is cheap.
Maybe it's just me having been bullied at school and having the teachers make the bullies say sorry and then act as if the problem was solved, but I don't put any inherent value in verbal apologies. Someone saying 'sorry' doesn't undo the hurt I felt, but they can make sure I don't have to feel that way in the future. Honestly, I could care less if someone actually apologizes after they upset me, if they just change their behavior.
And we see plenty of that in the end of the movie. People are including Mirabel where they formerly ignored her, she's shown having actual moments of interaction with her sisters rather than being just them all doing their own thing in the same space. Everyone really acknowledges her and how hard she has always worked for the family in those moments, and that is beautiful.

I have such trouble with being okay with Abuela, I know Mirabel forgave, but if i was pushed to the side like her for so many years and disregarded despite trying to help the family: I would not have been able to. Yes, I have a family member I don't love, she is older (thankfully gone now) and reminds me of her. Thankfully, i didn't live her with nor her us for a majority of our life. Nothing was ever good enough for her. Nothing. She was miserable and you had to cater to her whims and desires, even then, it probably wasn't good enough. To me the whole, let's just quickly forgive someone after years of emotional pain from someone who disregarded another just because it's a Disney movie doesn't set right with me.
I think it would have been far more fitting if Mirabel received the essence of the gift in full after the house collapsed, because due to Abuela's behavior the entire family was stressed, strained and had issues due to her emotional problems she wouldn't address, I think Abuela should have _lost_ the gift due to how she treated her family, especially Mirabel. After the collapse is the one that finally the house recognizes as in charge and Abuela needs to be shocked as is the family. That there are always consequences to one's actions and from that point on Abuela learns the hard way, you don't disregard those different from you nor should you raise them to be clones of yourself. You don't use the gifts you have to lord over others to where it's your way or the highway (with all the other family members) and treat those that aren't as blessed/lucky as you as beneath you, which she did with Mirabel. Abuela didn't think to look outside of herself or listen to others, as a result, she hurt her family and loses the essence of the magic. The final nail in the coffin is how she reacted to Mirabel, the house, the essence of the magic was disappointed for her not seeing that Mirabel is her heir.
And the biggest thing I would love to see in this what if scenario, Mirabel doesn't shove Abuela into the basement despite not having a gift anymore and despite doing the same thing to Mirabel. Instead Mirabel speaks to the house and a room is created for Abuela. Showcasing Mirabel's kinder and more loving nature from the beginning. For did Abuela ever try to speak to the house to create a new room solely for Mirabel? Or just shove her elsewhere? She could supposedly communicate with the house thanks to being the candleholder and she never thought to ask? She never thought to at least find a way to build a room for Mirabel?

Based on my observation, being an outcast in your family doesn't hone your life. Although I have never experienced it myself since I was an only child, my friends do. It's quite depressing to think how their family treated them like someone. They do not acknowledge their achievements and often compare them with others. So, I'm always there for them to be comforting and make them feel love and care. Because I don't want them to rebel or choose the wrong path.

I always thought the disturbing detail was mariano wanting 5 babies with isabela and that's what the bed is there for, like imagine if they did get married.

Do another how from the beginning where mirabel was given the house as her door. Her gift was always to take her grandmother's place.

Lots and lots and lots of padding in this video, eh? "The curtains symbolize Isabella being trapped" would take 10 seconds to say and explain, but gotta stretch that to 11 minutes long.

Her cage shattered (along with the house but hey positives her cage has shattered) and then her prophecy came true.
The life of her dream not having the weight of extractions and having a strong bond with her family had became hers.
And her powers thrived like grapes on the vine because of Merabel getting her angry then very experimental with her powers.

To me I think that Mirabel helped Isabela to have the freedom from their grandmother's grip not being prefect all the time and helped their sister relationship to grow to be close together.

Did you also notice that the curtains go up when Isabela was singing "What Else Can I Do" because she was doing what she wants?

Isabela is also isolated from the rest of the family because she can be perfect, so no one will come to support her. Mirabel gets sympathy and affection, Isabela just gets praise, adoration, and jealousy. Being the golden child is very isolating.
