Watching perfect snatches on youtube IWF competitions make it look so incredible simple, but, as Sylvester Ogletree said below, it takes a lifetime to perfect. I'm 68 and have a really big handicap. I've only been in the sport for 2 years. Never lifted a pound before January 2019. I've managed a snatch PR of 43 kilos and a clean and jerk PR of 57. I've been in three competitions and my weights just keep going up in the total; 90 in the first, 99 in the second and 100 in the third.
snatches are so hard for me mentally! it feels so scary to get the bar over my head. this is really helpful, especially the bit about taking your time in the set up.
I'm planing to incorporate this into my workout routine for speed in soccer. I was always somewhat worried about hurting my shoulders with this one because it looks like your extended arms go behind your head.
he is pushing his head through his arms to keep his back straight, the reason why you keep losing balance is probably because your not keeping the bar close to you as you bring it up. think of keeping the weight going in a straight line and "catching" it on the bottom. also think of it as one whole movement. something I would do before you do snatching is called, power snatching and that is basically just catching the weight and not squatting down after. in will teach you to keep the weight close to you. hope this helps!
I have positive associations with the word “snatch”, especially when it comes to the hip thrust, so I think I’ll really love the lift as well. That said, I think that I’ll feel unusually experienced with the clean and jerk, when I get around to that.
Make sure your shoulders are over or slightly in front of the bar. Also, your elbows should be straight or locked, and the bar should contact just above the pelvic bone when standing with the bar. Also the second pull you want to explode up with the bar. You're not smacking the bar off your body to push it out, but driving it up where you will pull and then push the bar as your drop below it. There is more too, such as making sure your weight is in the center of your feet (not on the balls or heel), back straight, but keep practicing and after six months to a year you can have a general idea of what it should feel like, then you can start to make real progress.
@@alelollipop1903 a proper gym that provide weightlifting is quite far from where I live in and that gym is the only gym in town. Been there before tho, and I wasn't allowed to pay for one day visit, i need to sign a contract for a year membership.. thanks for the advise anyway though..
Started practicing my snatch today (12 AM August 7) because of this easy video! No weight on the bar (I’m a small athlete, 5’5 123 lbs) but I’m proud! I’m a cyclist and runner, trying to be more functionally balanced/strong. Thank you! I’m gonna keep practicing these and box jumps for more explosive power. Want to get better at doing steep inclines so I got strengthen these legs! 😂🥳
hi, I just had one question, I noticed that everyone who does the snatch and clean and jerk has what looks like a thrust in the middle of the lift when the bar passes their knees, I do not have this thrust, I just bring the bar up in a straight motion up above my head, is there something I’m doing wrong?

I’ve been watching all these videos on how did you snatch or a clean, but none of them have said how to prevent smashing your nuts with the bar during the hip extension. Any ideas?
stay over the bar. Your pulling your shoulders back on extension more than likely. Its either that or your throwing your hips into the bar instead of bringing the bar to you.
Been trying this, but i never can get to do it correctly. I'm only using the bare bar, but i still can't get myself to do it. I don't know if it's my mind that is scared, but it's pretty futrating nonetheless.
It’s used in the olympics and competitions. It actually is uncomfortable and unsafe if done incorrectly. It can become more safe if done correctly which takes a really long time to complete. I myself still can’t do a snatch.
Why do people trying to demonstrate a squat snatch oo a power snatch and then overhead squat it. If you catch it in power just stand up. You look ridiculous squatting after you've caught it.
A pity! So many talented athletes, with incredible movement standards and most importantly, come from countries that have Olympic Weightlifting rooted in their cultures to be participating in this project and the Olympic Channel calls an American. Unless the goal is the same... Politics!

Keep it up!!
What is your bodyweight
I'm in the 81 kilo class. I turned 69 one week ago, so when January 2022 rolls around, I'll be in the 70 to 74 age group!!
@@getdusty1 thats nice but I think you really focus on form. Cause 50 kg was my first snatch ever. Im 68 kg. You are probably strong enough
It takes 5 minutes to explain the lift, and a lifetime to actually practice proper technique
Yes!
took me a month to learn decent form
A lifetime
I agree it looks easy and makes me confident when he explains then you go try and it’s like why isn’t this easy haha
I totally agree with you. Cheers.
It’s one of the easiest lifts, but also the most technical lift.
Simple, but not easy to do
Easy but not easy!
Wrong wording. It's a simple exercise to explain but hard to do and the hardest to master.
Easy according to who haha it’s terrible!

I really enjoy working those snatches. Thanks for tips: where to put your fingers, good speed above the knees, push the bar hard

Weightlifting is one of my favorite sports, and your advices were simple, but most essential!
And thanks to remind me that 'Worth of Practice' !
Another important point is to reach full extension in hips, knees, ankles commonly known as to triple extension to achieve full power
such a great tough workout like a combo deadlift, pull, press and squat in one exercise!
I'm planing to incorporate this into my workout routine for speed in soccer. I was always somewhat worried about hurting my shoulders with this one because it looks like your extended arms go behind your head.

There are variations of them with dumbells.
tried snatching for my first time today. so much fun
When i first tried it i hit my chin, then i came back to powerlifting now im going to try again hope i wont break my jaw
I did it without the hook grip with just the bar the first time I did it… that bar went flying… and I did not take the blame 😂😂
Never attempted it again lol

Slow Pull to mid thigh
jump down
catch and stand up
- snatch

this comment is underrated lol
Thanks my brother❤
The snatch is one of the most technical lifts in olympic weightlifting. The other most technical lift is the clean and jerk.
How many times do u need to train for weightlifing?
Thanks I am from India it is a very amazing and helpful video for me

Great video thanks for your time and help 🏋️
Thorough explanation! I did not like the "music" in the background - it wasn't needed especially when Cummings was talking.
Nice weighlifting from Olympic Channel.
Bar during standing should align above shoulder?
It's mentioned in a book I'm read, had to look it up. Nice video, thank you 🧡
Question, I have small hands and can not wrap my hands around with the hook grip. What should i do?
Laurel Hubbard has been looking for a real snatch for years
How do I keep my balance during my squat part? The bar keeps going forward when I squat
Good form.
Hi CJ do you have other videos on UA-cam for weight lifting thanks
I'll definitely practice these techniques great video aswell.👍
Who is this dude? He’s cool 😎
This is something i never do in a gym, but i always wanted to do this kinda movement..
You should definitely learn it. Olympic weightlifting is very fun. Never too late to give it a shot.

how do i get into olympic weightlifting?
i have a hard time getting it in the correct position overhead squad. I dont have enough mobility in my back/shoulders. any tips?
That slant in the bar when it's over your head - seems you might have a curvature in your spine.
think he has a hip shift, look at his hips, leaning to the left I believe, could be due to a mobility issue but it's an easy fix !
What a technique 👏

The title is misleading. You can’t master the Snatch with a 3 minute tutorial. There is so much material not gone over that beginners would miss.
i have bad mobility. I can only the lift with a pvc pipe or a training bar 😅
Song?? @2.40
With a grip that wide, I always feel paranoid about the barbell hitting my head while snatching.
“Pull bar to above knees--jump---squat”
About the title...my search continues.
