This really makes me sad. Developers don't deserve almost a decade of future work being spoiled, their own personal data being released and pre-alpha builds being criticized like they are the final builds. Genuinely disheartening.

I've had some loved ones with personal information leaked somehow. (Unauthorized charges from debit/credit cards) This year is indeed bad with the cyber stuff. Are times really that hard for people to go all out this time around?

I have to keep up with my grandmother and my mom as far as letting them be aware of what not to fall into and such. It feels like a losing situation the more people are kept in the dark.

Well, a lot of these hacks are spawned by bad end user decisions that completely bypass security, it doesn't really matter how much you pay. I also have a suspicion that the security industry itself is in on some of this business too. Larger point being, security is about common sense, which you will never get with larger companies and/or governments.
I don't really give a shit about games being leaked, but leaking personal information is a special kind of evil.

I had this theory for a long time now that people online (specially the people terminally online who spends their whole day just talking sh*t about every game they can) don't play games themselves. They just watch people streams and judge the games through that instead of actually playing them.

It's still so stupid to see people comparing this leak to Rockstar's leak when it's not even nearly as damaging as this leak is. It's not just a few minutes of gameplay footage, it's almost the whole damn game being leaked, what's even more damaging is the fact that the employees personal information also got leaked which Rockstar didn't suffer from fortunately. This might be the worst leak that any game company ever experienced, nothing compares to how damaging this leak is

Yeah me too, personal info is more important, the games were going to be revealed at some point anyway, and some genuinely good criticisms can come from the early builds being released. But the personal info is scary to have stolen.

I remember somehow owning a leaked copy of that movie. It was X-Men Origins Wolverine. Watched it and it was clearly unfinished. Lot of the cgi hadn't been finished yet so it was a very strange watch.
No matter people's views on Insomniac and Spiderman 2, there isn't a SINGLE developer in the world that deserves this nightmare of a situation. Having your work leaked before it's ready can be desvistating, not only to the company but to the developers morals, as well. I really wish the devs the best.

i just don't get how companies as big as this are affected by such script-kiddie type attacks with clear identifying elements. their security needs to be tighter
most orgs are made of people who only know their limited workflow, and they see passwords as another annoyance between them and their workflow rather than something that keeps them safe, so they make weak easy to type ones and reuse them wherever possible. that attitude extends to anything on a computer as long as they don't see how it will lead to their credit card number getting stolen.

ITD staff try to implement solutions but more time then not are told to make exceptions for VIP users which tend to be the ones that are targeted
You’re not wrong but it becomes the struggle of convenience vs security. I’m sure there’s some way to do it but you can only be as secure as your lowest security (or intelligence in security) employee that needs access. Big companies will have big holes in their security for several reasons, partly because they’re too cheap to keep up with the times that just keep changing faster and faster, and partly because the amount of time it would take to train every person in a big company on the ins and outs of it all plus having staff physically available to put out fires as they struggle with it doesn’t seem worth the cost until they come face to face with a ransomware attack.
You get what you pay for, we do exactly what you ask for.

Insomniac data also included release schedule up to 2030 along with rough dates for Wolverine as well as 6 other games they are working on.
Those dates no longer matter after the leaks, everything is gonna be pushed back

The leaked exposed a lot more than simply the Wolverine game. It has essentially detailed marketing strategies, development timelines, product schedules and product life cycles for the next 10 years. Side note: it’s really frustrating we won’t get another Ratchet & Clank until 2029.

Apparently the one dude blowing up in UA-cam shorts (PirateSoftware) got some of his work from a write up used by Mr Robot. They didn't know much of what they were doing - and the one thing they used included a person's personal phone number...the phone number of a puzzlemaster from the DEFcon conference he solved the puzzles that were in his write up.

Ransomware is a pain. Just because you have a recent back up doesn't mean you're out of the woods. Those payloads can sit on your drive for days, weeks, months, or even years depending on the people that planted it. I say this as someone that has had to go through a business' back ups to manually weed out any potential malicious files after they were hit with ransomware.
I agreed. It's like virus, remained dormant. Activate the script after 1 month later where the backups are expired.

I think the anonymity of these actors is a major part in why they're so glorified and feared. I honestly think that whenever a cyber criminal is caught, the law enforcement agency release photos of them to prove that they aren't scary looking dudes, and in most cases look pretty pathetic. Much like the anti-work subreddit, I think exposing how unintimidating these people are will be the downfall of alot of hacking groups.
Well this is a great reminder to make a cold storage backup of all my data, I think that's something we all should do during the Christmas break!

Seeing some of the replies about this situation has made me question the evolutionary direction of Homo sapiens.
I’m not too worried about insomnia. They’re a big enough entity ultimately they’ll bounce back. Who I feel sorry for are their low to mid level employees. This will probably lead to at least a temporary but noticeable drop in their stock price, and corporations have a predictable reaction to stem the bleeding of funds: layoffs. The same people that just lost years of their hard work are also going to be the first heads on the chopping block.
They're not going to cancel anything but I sincerely hope the staff that had their personal info leaked the absolute best. Insomniac Games is a damn talented studio with a very clear passion for what they do.

I think companies should start keeping self hosted data. All this cloud services become an easy target for an attack as it requires opening all kinds of ports outside your network. There is no need to pay up for slack or jira, there are many MANY FOSS quality stuff out there, that you can self host, and pay a bunch of it guys handsomely to maintain those.

@@asain3586 if paying a couple of it guys handsomely is coming cheaper than paying for millions of fragmented cloud services, then certainly businesses will do that. In fact, that is how things used to be back in the days.
So what changed? My take is, the quality of software workforce ranging from IT all the way to Scientists have reduced significantly over the years, which is why businesses are going the convenient cloud route if even it is coming costly. But given the cloud guys have milked this way too far, self hosted will make a come back, given the IT workforce is ready to take up the challenge.
I like knowing what the future holds as much as the next guy, but honestly I just feel bad for them with this leak.

The absolute worst part of these leaks. Is the fact is incredibly buggy pre-alpha builds. So no proper lighting, textures, sounds and gameplay will be incredibly basic and filled with bugs. And the devs now get that label slapped on them with thousands of people calling their work in progress utter shit.

I used to work for a major braodcaster that used port 9000 for talkback systems for "outside broadcasts" that linked into every major system in the entirety of the internal network... big corporations are clueless and so tightfsted they wont dedicate the money or man hours to fix simple access points like open ports or MFA. Needleess to say when i showed the "head of technology" over a cup of coffee down the street from the broadcast centre how i gained access to his personal email it was swiftly made a priority to implement some security. To this day they still use XP for critical operational use connected to the net becasue it "costs too much to buy new software" yet the bonus for one manager is more than a licence for windows server lol

I think there is a very real way for them to turn this whole thing into a massive publicity thing , like were I in charge of INsomniac , id put out a statement saying "Yes , that is a game we were working on , but this is barely the start of what we were working on , if you saw our plans and our up to date version , youd lose your mind , but please enjoy the leaked version and consider it a demo and we will reveal more on this game soon" and use this as a way to not only anger the hackers but also make hype for the game . I think they could flip a positive spin on this for sure.

I have a voice acting background and have to say that Yuri Lowenthal's performance is Spidey 2 has been such an inspiration for me since the Prince of Persia Trilogy. The vocal training was really tough, sometimes without noticeable results for months but actors like him and the late Kevin Conroy are a great impulse to not give up. You almost saw me as Leon in those new RE games :)

@@ares395 Don't worry about not being a native speaker. You can always start small. Doing vocal exercises at home is great. There's this one I like; put a wine cork between your teeth and read out loud any text you can find; poems, songs, books etc. You could also look for ppl who offer private singing or vocal lessons in your area. Our phones are a great tool to record ourselves and monitor the progress.

Sounds like getting hit by ransomware is lose-lose for the victims. If you don't pay up, bad things happen. If you do pay up, then you make the people who screwed you over that much stronger...giving them more resources and more profit motive to do it again and again.

I will say, how anybody can watch that footage and be disappointed is beyond me. While I am bummed for Insomniac’s devs, I am also pleasantly surprised at how good it all looks 3 years in advance.

I work remotely and before everytime I can log in, I need to get an authenticator token to be able to log in on top of my credentials. The token is valid for 60 seconds before I need to ask for a new one. Thank you for the great video Muta!
