Modders usually do this stuff. Rockstar shouldn't have had a team of like 20 people working on one of these games, let alone all three. To charge full price for this they should have had a large team working on these games. They were charging $10 each game prior to the delisting of the Trilogy on every platform.
They actually put it in the hands of some off shoot gaming company called Grove Street games or sum shit so there not directly involved with the release of this game

Making games isn't easy. In Batman Arkham Asylum it took 3 years just to get the cape physics how they wanted. By Rockstar's standards they need every resource they can allocate to GTA 6. Its a perfectly viable option to outsource the remasters, they just needed to give it to these guys to begin with. If they puled this visual quality on ohones, could you imagine how good thwse games would be on PC remastered from the ground up and not limited by hardware?

I'm glad I still have all classic 3D GTAs in my Steam account. Playing modded San Andreas is a blast on Steam Deck. I feel no reason to ever touch these embarrassing remasters.
Shame Take 2 shut down the engine re-creation projects even though I'm pretty sure those were 100% legal. Devs just couldn't afford to fight it in court.
I have them on Steam and PS4. They released as PS2 Classics back in 2016 (or 15, idk). It's the PS2 versions but upscalled to 900p. Vice City and San Andreas are missing some songs but other than that they look and play great. They were delisted when the Defective Editions were announced sadly but those who purchased can still play them.
Ive been playing the PS2 versions of the 3D GTA trilogy, along with GTA IV. I might 🏴☠️ the PC versions, but is it as simple as modding as on Windows? If I remember correctly, Vice City and GTA 3 just need to drag and drop some files, but SA you have to downgrade it. Tbh, might just play the PS2 versions upscaled. And is PC 🏴☠️ even work on the steam deck? Like can you mount virtual disc or do you have to get daemon tools for Linux?
Gaming is in a pretty sad state when companies get praise for fixing broken products a year later, and the products were a remake of an existing game anyway. I guess we should just be grateful they didn't include shark cards for the definitive edition games too, because god knows the slop enjoyers that make up the modern video game customer base would gobble them up
I expect some woke stuff in Gta 6 sadly and yet hopefully it won't be too bad. I remember Dan saying something about not really being there for Gta 6 much cause he was mainly working on Red Dead 2. He said something along the lines of "I'm glad that I was working on Red Dead Redemption 2. I wouldn't even know where to start with Gta 6 in today's climate". I'm getting it Day 1 for Ps5 for my wife and Series X for myself. At least there will still be free roaming but I don't expect the story to be anywhere as good as Gta V. How could R* top that one ? It was their magnum opus with one spectacular mission after another one. Dan went all out with it. Even minor story missions like Michael dealing with his family, Trevor dealing with his drug empire, or Franklin dealing with Lamar's mess ups were all amazing

These days, you have to be an absolute masochist to order games day 1, because they're usually either broken on launch or basically propaganda. In GTA 6's case, my money's on the latter. I expect the gameplay mechanics to be handled well because it's rockstar, but if the game's as obnoxious as I expect, that might not be enough to make it tolerable. I'm not interested in GTA: Life is Strange edition.
I personaly still feel like these games would need an actual full remake and not a remaster. Everything just looks more shiny but with all the original assets and mechanics, it just takes the soul out of it and even if these remasters were perfect, i would still pick the original games to play if i had to choose every time.
Remastering 20 year old games, fumbling badly, and charging full price for them was an absolute joke from Rockstar. These games needed a full remake and they should have had this treatment one at a time and charged $30-40 each.
I think remastering works though cause they’re more cartoony stylistically compared to Rockstar games from GTA 4 onwards. Using all the same story and voice acting from the originals and making it look a lot more realistic I think wouldn’t work as well.

It really is a shame how music licensing prevents any remake from realistically ever getting the full soundtrack, let alone maintaining it for digital releases. Neither the artists or the record lose anything when we hear their songs in a nostalgic old game. If anything, hearing their song in game might motivate me to listen to their music on a monetized platform instead of forgetting they exist. They're having their free advertising taken down and everyone loses.
Rockstar are just greedy. They've maintained musical licenses in Gta V for 10 years now. As one example, Outkast cannot be cheap to license and yet the popular song "Elevators" has been in Gta V since the original 2013 release. Rockstar could have easily secured the licenses for the older games and yet they half assed it. They've maintained a good relationship with basically every artist from that era because they didn't have "Steppin Out" by Joe Jackson in Vice City Definitive and yet the same song was in Gta V as one example. The only artist that they've refused to deal with anymore was Michael Jackson after the "kid issues" if you catch my drift and I believe they were fairly public with that. I believe they cut contact with him by like 2004.
Maybe they could just pay the artists to use the music- studios are just lazy and greedy, they dont wanna pay what the original soundtracks are worth, so they go with cheahper alternatives
I checked out GTA 3 with my Netflix account just to see how it was, and what I found is that if you screen cast your phone to your smart tv and connect a Bluetooth controller to your phone that you can actually have a good experience with it

Same. I got a refund cause it was absolutely abysmal. Glad I have better ways of playing them. I don't know how they messed up Denise and Candy so badly. Tommy looked completely off and CJ looked like he had bad botox. They looked way better in the originals. Even minor details like Phil's confederate flag shirt had been replaced with a generic skull. The flag was a spoof of Phil for comedy effects cause he is a crazy country Florida guy.
Also, they should have done the same remaster treatment to GTAVC stories and GTALC stories and add them as DLC or something. Those games are just as good and add more story to the GTA universe.
Both were excellent and I might add that Liberty City Stories (LCS) brought that punishing difficulty back into the games and it definitely was one of most difficult of the 3D Gta games and the last actually difficult Gta games. Like one mission that comes to mind was "Momma's Boy" where Tony's mom is fed up with him not being "a real man like his father" and so she sends hit men to kill Tony. If you weren't on your game the entire time, Tony got bodied quickly by these guys. That was just one mission cause many were like this

Recently finished my playthrough of SA Definitive Edition. While it certainly is not optimized, having not played it in almost a decade, the experience is still satisfactory enough to provide a capsule of nostalgia. To anyone looking to play it: DO NOT pay full price. Wait until it goes on sale and you will not be disappointed.

For me, it isnt even worth that either. They are just mobile ports and there's a lot of differences that make the experience worse than the originals in most cases. Best to skip all together and try getting the OGs

people in ps5 and xbox get kinda remastered of GTA with ray tracing, new atmospheres, new online play yet PC's still stuck at 2013-2016. So, it's not like Rockstar haven't done anything like this before.

If my wife wasn't such a huge Tekken fan with the Playstation controller set up, I'd already sold it. I have far more fun playing 360 era backwards compatible games on Series X. Red Dead Redemption has 4K resolution and Gta 4 is a locked 60fps oh and these updates were free too
The Netflix version is actually SUPRISINGLY better, its a 1 for 1 clone of the console versions, controller support and all the old school cheats still work too!

I sent R* an email after the Definitive Edition was released. I offered to give them $50 more dollars of my money (again) and put the old games back on. No response. I then went to a local mom n pops hobby/video game store. I found Vice City, San Andreas, and 3 empty memory cards. $37.90 later, I'm playing my PS2 again. 🤷♂️
I can never get over the fact that mods make games better. For free. In their free time. When the actual developers get paid for producing a half-assed game. For a living.
Honestly GTA definitive addition is my main concern when it comes to GTA 6. Yes it wasn't made by Rockstar (it was made by Grove Street Games) but the fact that Rockstar green lit this garbage and removed the original games from stores says alot about how the higher ups views their own loyal fan-base.

I wouldn't worry about Gta 6. Rockstar has always been terrible with these old Remasters. The same team that made these made the awful San Andreas HD for 360 and Ps3. This has been going on for years. They know that Gta 6 will replace Gta V and Gta Online there. Gta Online 2.0 in Gta 6 will be where they make their yearly billion dollars alongside the amount they will get for the game's story mode for Series S/X, Ps5, and PC. They won't screw with that.
I agree. I once installed the Vice City definitive edition and I played it for a while and it soft-locked me after the mission “Cop Land” with some side quests. I couldn’t progress any further because of it.
Thanks for tipping me off to this Muta! I've had a newfound interest in playing the old GTA games, which I didn't play much when they released. Even bought an xbox 360 copy of SA just last week. So to see this come out, this is just another early Christmas gift! Oh yeah, I also forgot to mention that you ignited my interest again after you did that one GTA PC mod, which I attempted and failed to mod on my own PC. Just couldn't figure out how to connect my xbox controller without it being all wonky and the PC controls felt weird. Anyways, thanks!
honestly the biggest stab in the back with the definitive editions for me was that the original games cant be bought from steam anymore. I only bought SA off steam before they took it down, now it's the only one I can play unless I buy the remasters, which I don't want to.
We’re probably around the same age and I loved these games on PS2. I really wanted to get the GTA Difinitive Edition, but with your overview of these games make me want to just emulate these games.
I, for one, having barely played VC in my life, and having never played the definitive edition of that game prior to a few days ago, was actually surprised how fun and clean it was to play. The lighting was better, the 3D models were better and I barely noticed any bugs. The only one time I came across one was when I ran into an invisible wall near a building, but that was it. The controls needed a little tweaking in order to feel good to play. You can't put a button on top of another like you can on CoD Mobile and Terraria, unfortunately, and you have to move the buttons a bit far away from the others so you can resize them. Dumb, but ok. I really hope they keep improving these games, adding cut content, making the cities more lively like you said, and if god allows, Rockstar will relicense the games' original songs.
the only reason i hate those games is that so many memorable soundtracks were removed! what made the games so nostalgic was the music, and when you get rid of that you get rid of the childhood memories you had.

When the definitive edition of GTA 3 was released on PC, some minor errors could only be noticed by those who were lucky enough to spot them. Some players may have even encountered bugs or technical issues. As someone who played the game for the first time on the definitive edition, I can confidently say that it was completely playable and I had no issues. I moved on to play the other games in the series, and they were also playable. However, with the recent updates, even the minor issues that I didn't notice before have been completely fixed. A lot of UA-camrs were more interested in creating drama for clicks and views rather than giving their honest opinion. I'm sure a very high percentage of people who actually played the game were quite happy with it.
I'd be more excited for a Bully 2 if I had more faith in it. Not sure how they would tackle it in today's climate. The original was hinted as taking place in the mid 1990's. They would have to make the sequel to take place in the 1980's if they want to keep it as its own thing. Making a modern era one would be too much like modern Gta. Red Dead Redemption has the old time theme down already

10:05 TBF to Grove Street Games (War Drum), it was probably Take Two who cut costs by hiring/buying them to remake the games, and they literally only had a handful of staff initially, less than 10 people! They actually did an amazing job, considering - like 1 coder per city LOL. Take Two are why we don't have story DLCs for GTA and Read Dead any more, and won't pay for great music, for V (and no doubt VI) and renew the music licences for the "DE" trilogy. BC Xbox discs on the 360 is probably the closest to a true DE on consoles (SA is the only disc that works on XSX, but it DLs the mobile port, not the PS2 port that's actually on the Xbox disc - but it's possibly the best console version. You can play the disc's full PS2 port on 360, with all the music and the 2-player that's missing from the XSX's mobile port, but it looks much worse and has terrible pop-in, especially for driving - I actually prefer the disc's mobile DL port on XSX, which was a Microsoft store-removed 360/Xbox One "Anniversary Edition" mobile port, and the original Xbox SA disc is the only way to get it, but DLs it for free). FYI.
There's definitely parts that look kinda neat But the fact this replaced the old STABLE versions that didn't suffer from many catastrophic issues It's a shame, i dont even care for raytracing or any of that lighting stuff, i would've been happy with higher res textures and 60 fps unlock
Minus the ridiculous framerate dips you get in that area. Which makes no sense at all since it's the area with the least amount of things that need to be rendered.

I've recently installed the original VC and SA, the community remaster mods, to make them run properly on a modern system, and I can't say that I really ever want to touch the official remasters at all
I knew the graphics were bad but i just bought it on Nintendo Switch and holy shit it suckssss! Gang members shoot on site and its impossible not to die or take them on in any capacity and cars blow up in 0.2 seconds making it impossible not to die when cars catch fire.
I noticed that they released it for free for netflix users and I tried it. I thought it was gonna be a buggy mess and look like the definitive edition for all other platforms, but I was surprised and I am happy that I finally have 3 fun games on my phone. Most mobile games are boring and filled with ads. Netflix also released Farming Simulator for mobile but that looked incredibly bad, at least on my 4 year old phone.

The original phone release of the games by grove street games were the ps2 port version ported back to pc then ported again to ios.. at that stage the code was already a mess being filled with 20 year old code. The definitive edition is then a ported version of this with just a coat of paint slapped on top with "improved graphics", its not surprising it turned out horrendously broken. Rockstar owe the community a true remake worthy of the trilogy that put them on the map
I'd say the original versions on steam are a scam too, all of them need to be modded back to the 1.0 version or you'll get a black screen just installing and trying to play it vanilla.
2:15 If I'm not mistaken, only San Andreas has an actual checkpoint system, while 3 and VC only restart the mission from the beginning. And yeah. SA had different weather effects depending on what area of the map you were in, which doesn't stop at the main three cities, but in mobile DE every area of the game uses the los santos lighting

11:45 I personally think there might actual be a legit reason for not doing the expanded & enhanced features on PC. Remember they just bought FiveM, i think releasing E&E which runs on a newer version of the engine afaik and replacing the current gta client with that would be (temporarily) disastrous for FiveM as it would take quite some time for not just the FiveM devs (obviously they could work with their parent company to make the client work prior to its launch), but the server / plugin devs which *wouldnt* have access before it releases. Just a theory though, i def would prefer to have the newer features, but if it means a major disruption for a major part of the community, we can live w/o it
If you’re on pc, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be playing the original versions with at least a few mods for compatibility, and to restore the full original soundtrack. It’s a way better experience than these lazy remasters.
I just play the original Xbox version and I will continue to until the day I die I will not lose the soundtracks in those games I will never lose that experience

I am actually enjoying San Andres on my phone. This reminds me of the whole sonic classics Chris Whitehead situation.

Found an install pack for OG San Andreas years ago that had community fixes. Was able to do a 100% run without any problems.
Im on xbox series x and i brought san andreas for og xbox and it works like a charm on series x

I expect some woke stuff in Gta 6 sadly and yet hopefully it won't be too bad. I remember Dan saying something about not really being there for Gta 6 much cause he was mainly working on Red Dead 2. He said something along the lines of "I'm glad that I was working on Red Dead Redemption 2. I wouldn't even know where to start with Gta 6 in today's climate". I'm getting it Day 1 for Ps5 for my wife and Series X for myself. At least there will still be free roaming but I don't expect the story to be anywhere as good as Gta V. How could R* top that one ? It was their magnum opus with one spectacular mission after another one. Dan went all out with it. Even minor story missions like Michael dealing with his family, Trevor dealing with his drug empire, or Franklin dealing with Lamar's mess ups were all amazing
@@Deadsea_1993 I've been a GTA fan for most of my life, but there's absolutely no way I'm getting it day 1. These days, you have to be an absolute masochist to order games day 1, because they're usually either broken on launch or basically propaganda. In GTA 6's case, my money's on the latter.
I expect the gameplay mechanics to be handled well because it's rockstar, but if the game's as obnoxious as I expect, that might not be enough to make it tolerable. I'm not interested in GTA: Life is Strange edition.

I personaly still feel like these games would need an actual full remake and not a remaster. Everything just looks more shiny but with all the original assets and mechanics, it just takes the soul out of it and even if these remasters were perfect, i would still pick the original games to play if i had to choose every time.
There are old games that I would like to play but with it looking better and some quality of life updates.

Remastering 20 year old games, fumbling badly, and charging full price for them was an absolute joke from Rockstar. These games needed a full remake and they should have had this treatment one at a time and charged $30-40 each.
I think remastering works though cause they’re more cartoony stylistically compared to Rockstar games from GTA 4 onwards. Using all the same story and voice acting from the originals and making it look a lot more realistic I think wouldn’t work as well.

It really is a shame how music licensing prevents any remake from realistically ever getting the full soundtrack, let alone maintaining it for digital releases. Neither the artists or the record lose anything when we hear their songs in a nostalgic old game. If anything, hearing their song in game might motivate me to listen to their music on a monetized platform instead of forgetting they exist. They're having their free advertising taken down and everyone loses.

Rockstar are just greedy. They've maintained musical licenses in Gta V for 10 years now. As one example, Outkast cannot be cheap to license and yet the popular song "Elevators" has been in Gta V since the original 2013 release. Rockstar could have easily secured the licenses for the older games and yet they half assed it. They've maintained a good relationship with basically every artist from that era because they didn't have "Steppin Out" by Joe Jackson in Vice City Definitive and yet the same song was in Gta V as one example. The only artist that they've refused to deal with anymore was Michael Jackson after the "kid issues" if you catch my drift and I believe they were fairly public with that. I believe they cut contact with him by like 2004.

I checked out GTA 3 with my Netflix account just to see how it was, and what I found is that if you screen cast your phone to your smart tv and connect a Bluetooth controller to your phone that you can actually have a good experience with it
There is a little bit of input lag with the screencasting delay but it is playable

Tommy looked completely off and CJ looked like he had bad botox. They looked way better in the originals. Even minor details like Phil's confederate flag shirt had been replaced with a generic skull. The flag was a spoof of Phil for comedy effects cause he is a crazy country Florida guy.

Both were excellent and I might add that Liberty City Stories (LCS) brought that punishing difficulty back into the games and it definitely was one of most difficult of the 3D Gta games and the last actually difficult Gta games. Like one mission that comes to mind was "Momma's Boy" where Tony's mom is fed up with him not being "a real man like his father" and so she sends hit men to kill Tony. If you weren't on your game the entire time, Tony got bodied quickly by these guys. That was just one mission cause many were like this

While it certainly is not optimized, having not played it in almost a decade, the experience is still satisfactory enough to provide a capsule of nostalgia. For me, it isnt even worth that either. They are just mobile ports and there's a lot of differences that make the experience worse than the originals in most cases. Best to skip all together and try getting the OGs

If my wife wasn't such a huge Tekken fan with the Playstation controller set up, I'd already sold it. I have far more fun playing 360 era backwards compatible games on Series X. Red Dead Redemption has 4K resolution and Gta 4 is a locked 60fps oh and these updates were free too
The Netflix version is actually SUPRISINGLY better, its a 1 for 1 clone of the console versions, controller support and all the old school cheats still work too!

The developers that developed this port were Video Game Deluxe [VGC]. In the past, they developed the LA Noire Remaster and LA noire VR.

I sent R* an email after the Definitive Edition was released. I offered to give them $50 more dollars of my money (again) and put the old games back on. No response. I then went to a local mom n pops hobby/video game store. I found Vice City, San Andreas, and 3 empty memory cards. $37.90 later, I'm playing my PS2 again. 🤷♂️

Honestly GTA definitive addition is my main concern when it comes to GTA 6. Yes it wasn't made by Rockstar (it was made by Grove Street Games) but the fact that Rockstar green lit this garbage and removed the original games from stores says alot about how the higher ups views their own loyal fan-base.

I wouldn't worry about Gta 6. Rockstar has always been terrible with these old Remasters. The same team that made these made the awful San Andreas HD for 360 and Ps3. This has been going on for years. They know that Gta 6 will replace Gta V and Gta Online there. Gta Online 2.0 in Gta 6 will be where they make their yearly billion dollars alongside the amount they will get for the game's story mode for Series S/X, Ps5, and PC. They won't screw with that.

I agree. I once installed the Vice City definitive edition and I played it for a while and it soft-locked me after the mission “Cop Land” with some side quests. I couldn’t progress any further because of it.
By the time Rockstar fixes GTA Definitive Edition to be a playable game, GTA 6 would be released for PC.

honestly the biggest stab in the back with the definitive editions for me was that the original games cant be bought from steam anymore. I only bought SA off steam before they took it down, now it's the only one I can play unless I buy the remasters, which I don't want to.

We’re probably around the same age and I loved these games on PS2. I really wanted to get the GTA Difinitive Edition, but with your overview of these games make me want to just emulate these games.
I, for one, having barely played VC in my life, and having never played the definitive edition of that game prior to a few days ago, was actually surprised how fun and clean it was to play. The lighting was better, the 3D models were better and I barely noticed any bugs. The only one time I came across one was when I ran into an invisible wall near a building, but that was it. The controls needed a little tweaking in order to feel good to play. You can't put a button on top of another like you can on CoD Mobile and Terraria, unfortunately, and you have to move the buttons a bit far away from the others so you can resize them. Dumb, but ok. I really hope they keep improving these games, adding cut content, making the cities more lively like you said, and if god allows, Rockstar will relicense the games' original songs.
As far as I can remember in 2 of 3 definitive editions the 'checkpoints' didn't worked well and were basically restarting the missions from the start.
Im getting tired of videogame companies selling us unfinished games. And gamers being dumb enough to buy them.

When the definitive edition of GTA 3 was released on PC, some minor errors could only be noticed by those who were lucky enough to spot them. Some players may have even encountered bugs or technical issues. As someone who played the game for the first time on the definitive edition, I can confidently say that it was completely playable and I had no issues. I moved on to play the other games in the series, and they were also playable. However, with the recent updates, even the minor issues that I didn't notice before have been completely fixed.
A lot of UA-camrs were more interested in creating drama for clicks and views rather than giving their honest opinion. I'm sure a very high percentage of people who actually played the game were quite happy with it.

10:05 TBF to Grove Street Games (War Drum), it was probably Take Two who cut costs by hiring/buying them to remake the games, and they literally only had a handful of staff initially, less than 10 people! They actually did an amazing job, considering - like 1 coder per city LOL. Take Two are why we don't have story DLCs for GTA and Read Dead any more, and won't pay for great music, for V (and no doubt VI) and renew the music licences for the "DE" trilogy. BC Xbox discs on the 360 is probably the closest to a true DE on consoles (SA is the only disc that works on XSX, but it DLs the mobile port, not the PS2 port that's actually on the Xbox disc - but it's possibly the best console version. You can play the disc's full PS2 port on 360, with all the music and the 2-player that's missing from the XSX's mobile port, but it looks much worse and has terrible pop-in, especially for driving - I actually prefer the disc's mobile DL port on XSX, which was a Microsoft store-removed 360/Xbox One "Anniversary Edition" mobile port, and the original Xbox SA disc is the only way to get it, but DLs it for free). FYI.
Those lighting and fog changes are literally just 2 sliders in unreal engine.

GTA back in the day was like Elden Ring, but instead of losing runes; you lost saves.
I noticed that they released it for free for netflix users and I tried it. I thought it was gonna be a buggy mess and look like the definitive edition for all other platforms, but I was surprised and I am happy that I finally have 3 fun games on my phone. Most mobile games are boring and filled with ads. Netflix also released Farming Simulator for mobile but that looked incredibly bad, at least on my 4 year old phone.
the fact they released it now is so upsetting, all three games need major updates still that have yet to come over a year since it’s release. pop in is so bad, traffic disappears once they drive past you, i can go on and on but thank god they can rip off even more people

The original phone release of the games by grove street games were the ps2 port version ported back to pc then ported again to ios.. at that stage the code was already a mess being filled with 20 year old code. The definitive edition is then a ported version of this with just a coat of paint slapped on top with "improved graphics", its not surprising it turned out horrendously broken.
Rockstar owe the community a true remake worthy of the trilogy that put them on the map
I'd say the original versions on steam are a scam too, all of them need to be modded back to the 1.0 version or you'll get a black screen just installing and trying to play it vanilla.

And yeah. SA had different weather effects depending on what area of the map you were in, which doesn't stop at the main three cities, but in mobile DE every area of the game uses the los santos lighting

11:45 I personally think there might actual be a legit reason for not doing the expanded & enhanced features on PC. Remember they just bought FiveM, i think releasing E&E which runs on a newer version of the engine afaik and replacing the current gta client with that would be (temporarily) disastrous for FiveM as it would take quite some time for not just the FiveM devs (obviously they could work with their parent company to make the client work prior to its launch), but the server / plugin devs which *wouldnt* have access before it releases.
Just a theory though, i def would prefer to have the newer features, but if it means a major disruption for a major part of the community, we can live w/o it
If you’re on pc, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be playing the original versions with at least a few mods for compatibility, and to restore the full original soundtrack.
It’s a way better experience than these lazy remasters.
