All Motor Racing fans will remember just were they were on that tragic day when they heard that most unbelievable of tragic news. The day Brock was called to drive for god ,and left us mortals shattered by the news..
More fun facts - the car he was driving in that video wasn't the one he started the race in. The 05 car blew an engine early on, Brock jumped into the number 10 car, which was only put together out of spare parts, to fulfil a sponsorship commitment of having 2 cars at Bathurst. It was never expected to even finish the race, let alone win it. I really think you should have a look at Larry Perkins next, Brock was a legend, but LP was just as much so, plus he built a lot of cars, Brock's, his own and a lot of others. There's video of him in the wet around Bathurst, too

There's a photo of Brock sideways in wet at well over 100mph. And he's got one arm casually resting on the door. It's like a Sunday drive to the legend.
G'day Ian, 1987 was a Crazy Year, not only the Weather at Bathurst during the race but it was the year of Brock's HDT/Holden's Bust Up, then the 2 Euro Ford Sierra RS500s that came 1-2 were disqualified for Body Irregularities giving Brock who came 3rd in number 10 his 9th Bathurst win (I think the Ruling was finalised in Feb 88, not straight after the race like in the Tv Mini-series), This was the last year for the HDT Group A Commodore with Carby fed V8 5litre (4987cc-304ci), for 88 Brock raced a BMW M3 & although many were hoping for a Miracle he wasn't in contention for an Outright Win, 1988 was also the start of HRT as the Holden Factory Team again with a VL but with a EFI V8 5litre (4987cc-304ci) & a HUGE Aero Kit
The 1987 race was also the first local race in a newly formed World Touring Car Championship. The Sierras were entered by Euro Eggenberger Team. They were ultimately disqualified for front wheel arch anomalies after three of the local teams had entered protests. Mind you the Euro teams were dodgy with flaunting regs. Modifications were made to the Bathurst track especiallly for this race because the global organisers specified a maximum length for any straight. As a result the Chase was constructed to comply with the specs. and we no longer had the famous Conrod Straight we had been used to for around 50 years.
Well I was there, at the top of the mountain that year, so many cars went off just about right in front of us - was spectacular stuff. I’m a Ford fan, but I must confess, Brocky was magic. Weird dude in some respects, but all of us motor sport fans loved him. Amazing driver. RIP PB.
ian, its great that you are researching & loving the Australian motoring history. Australia must seem like an aliternative universe to an American motor fan. All of the big 3 automakers, GM, Ford & Chrysler built cars in Australia, using ideas & concepts from both the USA, Europe & the United Kingdom. The 80's GM Commodore, was originally based on the Opel Record & Senatoe, but was Australianised with local straight 6 motors & the local V8 in 308/ 304 cc setups. The VL commodore was alos fitted with a Nissan 3litre staright 6. Australia also produced local version of many Japanese cars that were only available in the Australian & New Zealand markets, Nissans, Mitsubishi & Toyota were all given an Aussie flavor at one point or another !!! keep up the great content .. appreciate the video alot.
The VL was the last of the carbuerated 308s. Then the next model, the VN was the last of the 308s. After that they went back to chev, where it all began in the 60s Munros.
It was an hdt ss, 5L holden v8. The road cars worth good coin at the moment, any hdt is. Fun fact, brock ran the same suspension setup on slicks or wets. So when conditions changed, he was in and out of the pits as quick as a regular pit stop.
Hey Ian. How are you doing. I live in Brisbane, Australia. I was born in 1989 so after Brock won his last Bathurst but my dad talked about him so he became my all time fav driver. Absolute legend who is missed dearly
No denying PB was a great tin top driver and a nationally recognised figure. Most real Aussie motor sports fans also identify with our World champion motor cycle riders. In the 500cc / MotoGP eras we have had Mick Doohan, Wayne "Wiz" Gardner and more recently Casey Stoner. Wayne's son Remy is currently riding high in MGP2 and Jsck Miller doing well in the top class. Gardner and Doohan competed against the great US riders like Kenny Roberts, Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz. Also Troy Corser and Troy Bayliss winning World championships on the Superbikes Aussies have also excelled at what is now called Speedway GP which is a global sport (national sport of Poland) with its' roots entrenched in Australia. When I was growing up there where only 2 events that we could miss church for - 1 was the football grand final and the other was to watch Bathurst - known back then as the Bathurst Hardie 1000. Our family was 4 girls and all of us would jump in bed with Mum and dad from the moment that it started on the tv in the morning we would be there ALL day watching it with dad. I grew up watching Brock, Alan Grice, Dickie Johnson, Alan Moffat, Larry Perkins, Jim Richards, Craig Lowndes, Greg Murphy, Mark Skaife. And in the different vehicles - Ford (Sierra), Holdens, Nissans, BMW, Jaguar. And I got to watch some of them race in South Australia at tracks such as Mallala (before it went to Adelaide) the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide and Melbourne and Clipsal 500 which sadly is no longer held in Adelaide - they used Covid as the excuse for numbers dropping but it’s now been moved out to Taliem Bend which doesn’t have the same atmosphere. Love watching your videos- say hi to the family!
I dont remember having seen this before. Thanks for showing it. IYou might like to see two Australian GP Motorcycle world champions (Mick Doohan- 5 consectutive World championships and Wayne Gardner- 1 World championship) handle riding in the heavy rain at Suzuka in 1992. They were riding 500cc 2 stroke race bikes. Very peaky, narrow powerband and blindingly quick and with no driver aids at all, at all. Much harder to ride than the current MotoGP bikes. This video shows the last 9 minutes of the race. Whats interesting is Gardner slides off the track, picks himself and the bike up, rips the ruined fairing off the bike rejoins the race in last position and in something like 3 laps fights back to 5 position. Doohan was in third but, of course, wins the race. I'm enjoying your series, by the way. Shown me some things I never knew.

I am not 100% sure but i think this Commodore was near me on Sunday. I assume it had been raced at the historic meeting at Philip island and a near neighbour of mine has a few racing cars and room to store a couple for other people. They took the Commodore off a trailer and drove it in to his place - it sounded glorious. This is a VL Commodore and my nephew owns the VP Commodore that Brock raced.
The reason he put the slicks on was because the rain had stopped and he didn’t wanna do it when everyone else come in to the pits so he could make up more time , and also so he’s slicks would already have heat in them so he could push harder then everyone else. Also that’s not the car he started the race in he number is number 05
Thanks for that brother. Think it was the year before he got a smashed windscreen, went into the pits, the crew booted the rear windscreen out and he carried on. There is a great doco called Holden Dealer Team 1969_1987 on youtube which has great interviews and race footage. In the 70s they ran the engines in driving the cars from Melbourne to Bathurst and got up to all sorts of Shenanigans along the way. On one pre race teast drive Larry Perkins got off a ticket by letting the cop drive the race car while he drove the cop car. The good old days...
Yep Perkins was the unsung hero in my book. I was at Bathurst in 92. All the Comodes were running the Chevs but Larry stuck with the old 308. You could hear him coming up Mountain Straight and knew who was coming on shoot out day. Like all the other 308s he built it just sang that beautiful Holden V8 sound.
Great video. I am amazed how you Americans like watching these Australian racing cars, but it isn’t surprising considering you guys like anything powered by a V8 engine. The Commodore was a VL Commodore with a Holden 5.0 Litre V8 engine, this was the last of the small body Commodore.
Don't remember the year but one of the Bathurst races Brocky was racing with no front or rear windscreens. The front one shattered or something so it was removed and then a few laps later, he had to come back into the pits to have the rear windscreen removed so as it wouldn't blow out. Edit: Found what I was looking for...it was 1985...here...>>> ua-cam.com/video/rleqJ-qQSuo/v-deo.html
"how is he not locking up the breaks, going straight into the wall" Answer - He knows how to drive. all other questions/( apply to above as well. ) the answer is- Its because its Brocky on his home turf. (metaphorically speaking)
Can't remember if it was this race or a different one where brocky changed to the slicks when it was still wet and by the end the track had totally dried up and everyone else was at the disadvantage of having wet tyres on a dry track.
Thank you Ian for doing this video on Peter Brock in the wet in the VL Commodore the VL Commodore had a Nissan engine in it can you look at the road going Commodore between the race version love your videos keep it up
Was the only time i have ever been to Bathurst watching Brock towards the end of that race after hearing rumor's that the Sierra's could be disqualified he lifted his game much of the top of the descent off the mountain was on two wheels crazy to watch
I used to have a VL Calais which I had the Grp A bonnet scoop, front spoiler, same as this Brock commodore! Then LE side skirts and bobtail boot spoiler! My Favourite commodore. Spent $$$$ on it. Brock used the dry line!
Brock was a legend. Plus that Commodore he was driving was a VL which was the only Commodore model that didn't have a V8. It had a RB30 skyline engine.
It's base model was the VL Commodore and they had an Aussie variant 304ci v8. The 304 derived from the 308 another Australian 5L. Difference is slightly different stroke and the 304 was the start of fuel injection. As for the touring car builds it's highly likely they could be using older engine builds like the previous 308ci and carby set up. Although it's hard to tell because most teams keep all that information secret from the public. Anyway im a Ford fan but know Holdens fairly well too, if there is any Holden fans that notice something i got wrong please correct me
Aw man, when the video finished I was hoping you'd look up at the suggested videos... right at the top, "... Brocky in the wet part 2". It was right there mate!! Haha yah well.
Another reason why Brock RIP, and the Torana were King. Ian my man as always great and loved your reaction and to a great man a legend. How about checking out the car that took Peter Brock to his 1st of nine wins at the mountain, both Brock and the Torana deserve the title ‘King of the Mountain’ and started the Peter Perfect, Torana legend, haha and also dubbed the Giant Killer! The 1972 Torana GTR XU-1. I really do think you’ll be surprised on the history and of the XU-1 and what it did at Bathurst of 1972. 👍🏼😎
You need to watch the 1991 peter Brock's tooheys 1000 shoot out at Bathurst (spoiler alert brocky doesn't need the rain to get the commodore sideways!!!)the car had a 5.0 twin throttle body injection engine
I saw that live with my son, and remember the champion so well. Then later on we lost two Australian legends in one week: Steve Irwin from a stingray and a few days later Peter Brock in a rally, heartbreaking.
That was an ss commodore with a 304 5L v8, they brought out an ss group a of that car called the walkenshaw with full aero package and better intake set up that won batherst in the era of the Ford sierra dominating by Allen grice and win percey
"Damn that Polarizer. They just didn't get it!" Ian, have you heard about Brock's Energy Polarizer that embarrassed a national auto manufacturer... "enhanced car's performance by aligning molecules".
I remember reading a story in motor or wheels magazine. They got 50 of them or something, 25 with Polarizer & 25 without. Blind testing, & the ones they all selected as driving or feeling better, contained the Polarizer. Wish I could find it…
@@gavtriple6 Cool story. I've seen some on ebay (years ago) and been tempted, maybe put it in the HQ or just to have it as a collectors item in the garage. Personally I think there may have been something to it but very hard to quantify.
@@RoverIAC I don’t believe they ever produced any documented science behind it… 😂 Still I love it… looks like the flux capacitor from Back to the Future.
another way they ruined bathurst, in those days they raced rain, hail or shine. the reason he is on slicks is strategy when you run wet weather tyres on a drying track they go off quick you need to start driving outside the racing line on the wet parts of the track to preserve the tyres. brockys wets would have been knackered so he changed to slicks early if the track continues to dry the rest have to come in and change to slicks while brocky has clear track and warm tyres. a huge advantage providing it doesn't rain again.
Is this the year Brocky broke 05 and jumped in another team member's car and took the podium still? That seems cemented in my memory as a bad Brocky moment where I felt he had to still steal some glory. Perhaps my recollection is not the best tho but he's driving number 10 that day....
Ian look up ''Larry Perkins in the wet'' you will enjoy it!! IF you are able too tune or watch live All Blacks vs Australia Tonight starts in 1h 15m, you would enjoy it.
A suggested video idea is to watch another Aussie legend - John Farnham (singer). Check out his songs, 'Help (live with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra)' or 'You're the Voice', his album Whispering Jack was great. We have lots of great singers you might not of heard of so start with John, in the 80's - 90's he was very popular and has a voice like no other.
I've been searching for the '87 Bathurst 1000. While Brock was declared the winner after the two Sierra's were disqualified, the fact of the matter was that he was still several laps down when those Sierra's crossed the line on lap 161. He may have claimed his 9th Bathurst victory, but those Sierra's won the day. If you want to see the modern Supercars drifting in the wet, watch this vid (ua-cam.com/video/HnDeKzktUiA/v-deo.html) Here's a little more Brock action from 1985. He had an incident where he needed to have his front windscreen removed... Unfortunately, the team neglected to remove the rear windscreen at the same time. This required Brock to return to the pits for the removal and he almost picked up a passenger! (ua-cam.com/video/rleqJ-qQSuo/v-deo.html)

If only the cameras would catch the action off the track in those days. It was a ufc, octoberfest, camping and burnout out competition all rolled into one
You need to watch Perkins last to first at Bathurst. He is an engineer that built engines for most of the non factory teams and certainly knows how to drive. 1995

1985, chasing the TWR Jaguars. Probably his best ever drive, he was in 3rd place until the timing chain broke
Yeah came in to have front w/screen removed and was only released if they remove rear as well
@@EVOETR1 He did a few laps with the rear windscreen still in but was black flagged, so had to come in to get the rear one removed.
He’s got real control over the car, he’s got some mental understanding of car physics in practice
There’s a “Brocky in the wet part 2”
"how is he not locking up the breaks, going straight into the wall"
Answer - He knows how to drive.
all other questions/( apply to above as well. )
the answer is-
Its because its Brocky on his home turf.
(metaphorically speaking)
Best driver of all time no one will ever be able to drive like him
Can't remember if it was this race or a different one where brocky changed to the slicks when it was still wet and by the end the track had totally dried up and everyone else was at the disadvantage of having wet tyres on a dry track.
Thank you Ian for doing this video on Peter Brock in the wet in the VL Commodore the VL Commodore had a Nissan engine in it can you look at the road going Commodore between the race version love your videos keep it up
this is the best year for sure!
Was the only time i have ever been to Bathurst watching Brock towards the end of that race after hearing rumor's that the Sierra's could be disqualified he lifted his game much of the top of the descent off the mountain was on two wheels crazy to watch
Always was odd how much he was loved, well not really odd. But he was such a quiet intellectual bloke but beloved by the rest of us rougher blokes 👍
another fun fact, i live in Hurstbridge, where Peter Brock lived. only a small town
It was a VL Walkinshaw they were built in the UK by Walkinshaw Commodore 5 litre V8
RB30 was the road car standard motor. V8 optional and used in all these Bathurst racing Commodores.
Anyway im a Ford fan but know Holdens fairly well too, if there is any Holden fans that notice something i got wrong please correct me
Blocky was such a magic driver, he was able to control the drift and kill it. 👍👍
Aw man, when the video finished I was hoping you'd look up at the suggested videos... right at the top, "... Brocky in the wet part 2". It was right there mate!!
Haha yah well.
I can’t believe I missed that lol 😂
@@IWrocker Next time, haha
OMG HERE IS THE MAN the KING OF THE MOUNTAIN R.I.P Mr Brock ty Ian
IAN did u see Brocky had his arm on the the door going across the top of the mountain ?
Another reason why Brock RIP, and the Torana were King.
Ian my man as always great and loved your reaction and to a great man a legend. How about checking out the car that took Peter Brock to his 1st of nine wins at the mountain, both Brock and the Torana deserve the title ‘King of the Mountain’ and started the Peter Perfect, Torana legend, haha and also dubbed the Giant Killer! The 1972 Torana GTR XU-1. I really do think you’ll be surprised on the history and of the XU-1 and what it did at Bathurst of 1972. 👍🏼😎
Don't forget PB was also a rally driver and very comfortable with cars moving around under him.
You need to watch the 1991 peter Brock's tooheys 1000 shoot out at Bathurst (spoiler alert brocky doesn't need the rain to get the commodore sideways!!!)the car had a 5.0 twin throttle body injection engine
KB [Kevin Bartlett] qualifying the 9 Camaro on pole in the rain.
Or when it became the Channel 6 Camaro when a wheel broke and it ended up arse up!!
@@ldnwholesale8552 that was a frightening crash for big Kevin and the channel 6 whoops channel 9 Cameron!
you can see him tryin gto stay in the dry line...
After seeing this I feel so bad for saying the fish tales joke he can clearly handled them
Anyone have a total number of laps around Bathurst that sir Peter Brock ran in his history? It wasn’t just the 1000 he raced in there.
🇦🇺 9 Time winner of the mountain .Hail the King . 🇦🇺. Love ya videos mate keep them coming 👍👍👍
Peter Brock for those who dont know. Hes the greatest V8 supercar driver in history, Bathurst was his Throne and he ruled it
Hahaha Brocky had balls of steel till the very end!! Look at that!! You little ripper!!! Holden forever 🦁
They just didn't get it!"
Ian, have you heard about Brock's Energy Polarizer that embarrassed a national auto manufacturer...
@@RoverIAC I don’t believe they ever produced any documented science behind it… 😂
Still I love it… looks like the flux capacitor from Back to the Future.
another way they ruined bathurst, in those days they raced rain, hail or shine. the reason he is on slicks is strategy when you run wet weather tyres on a drying track they go off quick you need to start driving outside the racing line on the wet parts of the track to preserve the tyres. brockys wets would have been knackered so he changed to slicks early if the track continues to dry the rest have to come in and change to slicks while brocky has clear track and warm tyres. a huge advantage providing it doesn't rain again.
Just can't stay away from watching Brocky vids. :)
I’m addicted to the way he waltzes the car around the track.. it’s hard to describe
@@IWrocker It is a thing of beauty.
NOT WAS…. Is a LEGEND.
Amen.
Brocky signed my mono cap , the most gracious man you could meet
Is this the year Brocky broke 05 and jumped in another team member's car and took the podium still? That seems cemented in my memory as a bad Brocky moment where I felt he had to still steal some glory. Perhaps my recollection is not the best tho but he's driving number 10 that day....
Ian look up ''Larry Perkins in the wet'' you will enjoy it!!
IF you are able too tune or watch live All Blacks vs Australia Tonight starts in 1h 15m, you would enjoy it.
An Australian racing legend,he was killed doing what he loved to do
15 years today, RIP Peter Brock
A suggested video idea is to watch another Aussie legend - John Farnham (singer). Check out his songs, 'Help (live with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra)' or 'You're the Voice', his album Whispering Jack was great. We have lots of great singers you might not of heard of so start with John, in the 80's - 90's he was very popular and has a voice like no other.
@IWrocker there is a part 2 of Peter Brock in the wet
I've been searching for the '87 Bathurst 1000. While Brock was declared the winner after the two Sierra's were disqualified, the fact of the matter was that he was still several laps down when those Sierra's crossed the line on lap 161. He may have claimed his 9th Bathurst victory, but those Sierra's won the day.
If you want to see the modern Supercars drifting in the wet, watch this vid (ua-cam.com/video/HnDeKzktUiA/v-deo.html)
Here's a little more Brock action from 1985.
Brocky one off the very best off all time and that is coming from a Ford Bloke through and through Mick Australia. 305 Holden V8 5 speed getrag not sure about that, 9 inch Diff, light car had a very good look at this Car At Bowden’s QLD if You ever get the chance Ian You need to go there unbelievable great collection.
Try .. Peter Brock 1991 Bathurst 100 Tooheys Top Ten or Larry Perkins Sideways In The Wet-Bathurst 1994
There was Part 2 top right on your screen. You could have just clicked on that iWrocker….
I love your appreciation
So In Yeppoon Peter champion bought most of Peter brock’s car it was awesome to see all the cars he drove
I recon, consider you enjoyed this, you should also watch Glenn Seton in the Rain. The RWD Turbo Nissan Skyline was all over the place in very similar circumstances, I believe that would have been earlier in this same race.
If only the cameras would catch the action off the track in those days. It was a ufc, octoberfest, camping and burnout out competition all rolled into one
Seton in the early Skyline battling the track and watching the body flex breaking the windscreen.
With your love of Brocky can I suggest you check out the Chasers Eulogy Song
Craig lowndes as well Peter Brock was a mentor of his. Great channel too
That’s why we love Brock, he’s even perfect sideways. Like tsuchia.
Up the VL!!
RIP Brocky
You need to watch Perkins last to first at Bathurst. He is an engineer that built engines for most of the non factory teams and certainly knows how to drive. 1995
I wanna watch rhat so bad!! It will come up this week 👍
Man I would love to get my hands on one of Larry's 308s. Perkins was also an F1 driver for a while. He was actually driving in the Hunt Lauda era. There is a great interview with him on the youtube show called Enforcer and The Dude. Hosted by Russel Ingal and Paul Morris. Both tallented V8 Supercar drivers in their own right.
There is part2 as well on the top right
