Love the little song and dance. Puts this in my top 10 favorite Whiskey Vault episodes. Daniel, I'm very concerned about Rex. Is he feeling okay? He didn't try to mooch a single whiskey this episode. Maybe you should take him to the vet and get him checked out just to be safe.
You reminded me of my 18th century philosophy class from college. My professor (who thankfully was very cool) kept saying "phenomena" with that perfect cadence, and I couldn't stop cracking up. She asked me what the hell was wrong with me and I turned to my buddy and sang "Do dooooo do do do" and he responded without missing a beat, and the rest of the hour was torched.
In the words of the Garden Party - Rick Nelson & The Stone Canyon Band "I went to a garden party To reminisce with my old friends A chance to share old memories And play our old songs again When I got to the garden party They all knew my name But no one recognized me I didn't look the same But it's all right now I learned my lesson well You see, you can't please everyone So you got to please yourself People came from miles around Everyone was there Yoko brought her walrus There was magic in the air And over in the corner Much to my surprise Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan's shoes Wearing his disguise But it's all right now I learned my lesson well You see, you can't please everyone So you got to please yourself"
Hi Daniel and Rex I have a question for you I have been a big johnnie walker fan but I have been recently wanting to try new scotch to bourbon whisky/whiskey I was wondering what you would recommend I have tried monkey shoulder and thinks it’s great. I was wondering if I should go with dalmore or something different thank you and I love the videos you guys are great and hope you have a wonderful new year
My heart skipped today. Usually, when I get on UA-cam you guys pop up as the first new video of the day. Today UA-cam fucked up and made me scroll through other BS videos I wasn’t interested in; until I saw you two magnificent bastards and my soul was at ease.
I thought I was the only one to still do the Phenomena dance LOL. Now I will be on the look out for this dram I already love THE PEAT MONSTER so I bet I'll love it too.
Hey guys, Love the videos. I have been able to better explore whisky and why it is that I enjoy them. Could you review Templeton Rye? I’m from the state of Iowa and it has a great history in the state of Iowa!
Speaking of the Glenora Distillery... In a couple of weeks my birthday is coming up and I have decided to celebrate with whisky! I won a bottle of Glenfiddich Winter Storm back in November, and I figured my birthday is a good time to crack it open. Since it is finished in Canadian ice wine barrels from Ontario, I thought it would be interesting to compare to another whisky with a similar finish...GLEN BRETON! which is finished in Nova Scotian ice wine barrels :-) I'm also throwing in a bottle of late harvest wine from the Okanagan. I've had it waiting for a few years, and is the closest thing I have to an ice wine. Hoping it may help bring out the wine notes in the whiskies. Very excited!
Great episode, I think I'm going to try a little home blending...Thinking some bright buttery to bitter Irish base (Powers or Teeling), perhaps 20% butterscotchy sherried Speyside (Glenfarclas 12), and maybe 5% smokey peaty Islay (Bunnahabhain Cruach Mhona, all I have at the moment, Ardbeg 10 could go nicely). I heard a few drops of Islay in an Irish can be magical. Well, now I must experiment! Once again great episode, funny, and that Phenomenology sounds great!
Hi Fellas, Is it experience or a wee bit wishful thinking to think one is able be able to taste 1/2 of percent of a certain whisky in a blend? I understand that Caol Ila can be a distinct flavour but 'round numbers' that would work out to only about 40 bottles of CI in the 7900 +/-total bottles.
In theory it's possible if the rest of the blend is nothing like that at all. But you'd have to be pretty experienced at that one whisky to find it. It could also be your brain telling you what you want to hear if you already knew what you were looking for.
Question for Daniel: I recently went to a whiskey lounge and ordered Ardbeg 10 year (first time trying it, loved it). After that I ordered Springbank, which I didn't hate but I wasn't particularly pleased with it either. It seemed fairly one dimensional and all I got out of it was a wet cardboard/paper flavor. Do you think this had to do with the order of the drinks I had? Or do I simply not like Springbank.
Another good choice would be the Battle of the Glen 15 year, if my doctor gives me good news tomorrow im gonna go pick it up, or at the least try and get the specialty liquor store to track it down for me.
Tastes whiskey: “Ah yes that gives me a vey chubbed up note with a hint of vanilla. OH! WAIT! No; now I am fully chubbed up.” -puts down my angels Envy-
So I need Rex’s moochology opinion. I have had a crazy few days and I pulled the bring my own bottle and not even open it through the whole night trick. I brought a bottle lephroig 10 (I definitely know I misspelled that) and never had opened it. Even though I went through a few bottles of my friends whiski(e)s. Does that warrant master moochery yet?
Just so you know the bottles I went through were very expensive somewhere around $350 here in Ohio. Which is very expensive considering how our liquor market is out here.
Four Roses 2017 Small Batch Limited Edition Al Young’s 50th Anniversary, Wild Turkey Master’s Keep Decades, & Eagle Rare 17-Year-Old. Now that I have taken the time to actually figure out what the hell happened that night this is a lot more expensive than I remember. But my buddy told me that the reason the bottles were only worth $350 is because he only paid for the shipping for the bottles. Considering they are actually worth $1605 with the shipping included.
Would it be possible to review Tomatin 12? It's the cheapest single malt at my local store but it's fairly interesting. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
So Rex, oh wise and revered Mooch. Do you get any mooch points by association if someone (my mom) mooches a bottle of Rum for the purpose of making me a Rum cake? And if so are all those points voided when you find out that unbeknownst to me she "mooched" it from my own collection and mooched the most expensive bottle on the shelf (Plantation Guyana I had to order from Master of Malts) ?
I couldn't agree more about how cultural and experiential differences really fuck up note comparisons and communicating the impression one gets from a given whisky. For instance when you chaps describe smells and palates using what are clearly American dishes I find myself always at a loss. I'm sure this is remediable through some kind of unified theory of whisky notes that describe what those subjective experiences might point to that is an objective element of a whisky.
Have you guys considered doing a crowdsourced whiskey of the year video? It would be weird to define what whiskies would qualify, maybe just whiskies reviewed this year, but it might be a decent way to phone in some discovery content.
I like this idea! We need to find a way to execute it on UA-cam and the Facebook group that doesn't involve me reading and creating spreadsheets. Thoughts?
Certainly, someone has a program to auto scrape comments from youtube or something. If nothing else, you might be able to make a post on the tribe, then enlist Terry to do the count. Kinda sucks that this came to my mind the day before the last video of the year.
Man I really wanted to try this. The store I buy from had this and No Name. Decided to get the No Name but once I could afford the Phenomenology it was already sold out. No regrets though bc that No Name is freaking amazing. Have you tried it yet? If not, I'd be willing to send you guys some samples of mine to review.
Charlie, I don't know if they can ship to you but Pavillion Liquors in Surfside, SC has 2 bottles of Phenomenology. They are on the web. The price is around 150.00 I think. They also have No Name.
Daniel and Rex, I was going back through some of y’all’s videos where you were tasting glenfarclas. I noticed that you called the 21 and 25 year glenfarclas a speyside but you called the 12 year old a Highland? What do you classify glenfarclas as, a speyside or a Highland? Great videos like always and keep up the good work.
It depends on what they call themselves in Marketing. Technically they're both. I think the bottles usually say Speyside, but they're often sold in the "highland" section in stores.
The Speyburn Orach was the first whisky I ever tried and I enjoyed it - but now after trying so many I can see where it fits in the spectrum. I've never tried the 10yr, but for the price point for the Orach, you really can't beat the quality with its price (about 25 US dollars+tax here)
Question for the Somm (Rex, drink whisky) I've noticed that some master blenders use colored glasses when they nose the whisky. My theory is that the tainted glass, allows the blender to not get distracted by the color of the whisky, and therefor make more precise decisions, when it comes to which whiskies should be blended... Is this even a thing, or am I just on a wild goose chase? Stay awesome 🥃
Were not offended or anything, Canadians are a lot more easy going than the Scottish Whisky Association, I also had the chance to meet the people who make Laird Fintry, they are very pleasant people, tried their bourbon, it wasn't bad at all.
So I️ have an idea for some fun Friday activities that I’m sure both of you will like. You take a suggestion from the comments for a blend. Then on Friday you recreate that blend. Tell us your opinion and then give us a suggestion on how to improve on that blend. Sound good? Danniieelllll. Rex week voice
Rex, Unlike pound cake, rhubarb pie does not ship particularly well. Pretending to misrepresent the flavour profile in hopes of trolling the tribe to send you samples WILL NOT WORK! Sincerely, T. ❤
Hate Rex? I loathe Rex! JK - Backyard rules. :) The WV w/o Rex would be like Rush without Geddy Lee! Not everyone loves Geddy's voice, but screw them! And speaking of Rex -he's developed the skills of a level 1 Somm just through osmosis. Come to think of it, having watched nearly every episode - so have I. Please send me my well earned sweet Somm medallion. I promise I will wear it while watching every episode. And send whisk(e)y, too! I have Ancient Ancient Age. So hold off on that. It's that top shelf import stuff I don't have. But don't forget - BSM! Proost!
OK, excuse obviously a repeat question here from the channel semi-newb but I cant find an answer browsing thru the video history's, But why is Daniel only a level 3 Somm refusing to go to level 5??? I ask since 1/2 way thru this video Daniel specifically checks to make sure his necklace is showing properly on camera...His achievement in his own mind is obviously important to him otherwise he wouldn't check himself.... BUT, does that mean he is proud and content in his mediocrity and unwillingness to achieve the ultimate level 5 Somm status??? ......I mean come on, REX is obviously an over-achiever and never content with his Mooch status and constantly setting a new bar for Mooch level status setting an excellent example for us all!!!....REX, you're like a shooting star next to an antique rusty glass wick lamp when it comes to drive and dedication. Stand proud....Love you Magnificent Bastards. :-)
I think it might be different from state to state, but from Michigan, Rhubarb pies seem to be only about 40% rhubarb, 60% strawberries, and 300% sugar - then again I've only had it from nana.
Im backing rhubarb pie for my wife myself, sometimes (if I can get rhubarb ripe enough) I use just rhubarb, sometimes with different fruits (even rhubarb technicali is a vegie), mainly strawberries, or other berries ... But yes rhubarb is on its own quite sour, so you need to sugar it
No discussion of Hegel or Husserl? Come on guys (especially Daniel) ! You call yourselves nerds? Daniel, thoughts on Ralfy’s year end rant about NAS and declining quality of scotch whisky?
Yeah, I saw the rant, but I completely disagree. I agree that there are some less than wonderful whisky bottles on the market today. But if you're not willing to allow people to try shit, you never get anywhere interesting. Human temperaments are interesting. There is an entire percentage of humanity who view themselves as protectors of the past and status quo. They will forever be at odds with innovators. It's the nature of the beast. they're not wrong. But both views and perspectives are needed.
Whiskey Vault I’m somewhere in the middle. I live innovation, but not for its own sake and certainly not if the product gets objectively worse. I can’t imagine anyone saying Macallan Gold is anywhere near as good as the 12 Sherry Oak is/was, yet when Gold was released, it cost MORE than the 12 Sherry Oak used to and 12 Sherry Oak was discontinued at least here in Ontario. I haven’t forgiven Macallan for that. I think the 1824 series was a massive “fuck you” to customers and frankly I don’t care about stock management/profitability for investors. I’m a customer. I won’t pay more for a worse product. That said, I’m a fan of Uigeadail and Corryvreckan, but not BECAUSE they’re NAS. I like them because they’re great whiskies. I’d still buy them if they carried an 8 Year old age statement.
Jimmy Leg Thanks Jimmy. The feeling’s mutual. Wait, you used the past tense. Liked. Does this mean we can no longer be friends? Because if I thought you were no longer my friend, I don’t think I could bear it. ;)
I figured you were just keeping with the Compass Box philosophy of everyone who tastes it will have their own opinion. So you weren't putting ideas in our heads.
When the dancing and singing starts, I always find myself rewinding way too many times. This makes me question so many things about myself. Thank you.
How can ppl hate rex?
Nobody doesn't like Rex.
Alucard .Tepes They're just lying to themselves. Everybody loves Rex.
Admirable that Rex can soldier on with 15% disapproval rating.......
In the words of the Garden Party - Rick Nelson & The Stone Canyon Band
"I went to a garden party
To reminisce with my old friends
A chance to share old memories
And play our old songs again
When I got to the garden party
They all knew my name
But no one recognized me
I didn't look the same
But it's all right now
I learned my lesson well
You see, you can't please everyone
So you got to please yourself
People came from miles around
Everyone was there
Yoko brought her walrus
There was magic in the air
And over in the corner
Much to my surprise
Mr. Hughes hid in Dylan's shoes
Wearing his disguise
But it's all right now
I learned my lesson well
You see, you can't please everyone
So you got to please yourself"
Old Thanatos: Wow! Mucho Apreciado! Long time fan of Ricky and Stone Canyon Loved the reference.
This magnificent duo proves that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
Hi Daniel and Rex I have a question for you I have been a big johnnie walker fan but I have been recently wanting to try new scotch to bourbon whisky/whiskey I was wondering what you would recommend I have tried monkey shoulder and thinks it’s great. I was wondering if I should go with dalmore or something different thank you and I love the videos you guys are great and hope you have a wonderful new year
Toured Balcones Distillery today. Awesome place and tried some great whisky as well. Loved the Baby Blue whisky.
My heart skipped today. Usually, when I get on UA-cam you guys pop up as the first new video of the day. Today UA-cam fucked up and made me scroll through other BS videos I wasn’t interested in; until I saw you two magnificent bastards and my soul was at ease.
Compass Box is my favorite blended scotch company or whatever is the correct thing to call them. Haven't heard of this one however.
I thought I was the only one to still do the Phenomena dance LOL. Now I will be on the look out for this dram I already love THE PEAT MONSTER so I bet I'll love it too.
Best intro ever!
Person: “what are Rex and Daniel’s personalities like?”
Me: (shows person this intro)
Rex, Rhubarb taste like sour green apples. You had a strawberry Rhubarb pie, that's the only way it would taste like Strawberry.
You guys blend perfectly together ! Ha...
Please review the new irish whisky ...SLANE triple casked
I look at it like this. Rex is the sweet jelly. Daniel is the extra crunchy peanut butter. And whiskey is the bread that holds them together.
Hey guys,
Love the videos. I have been able to better explore whisky and why it is that I enjoy them.
Could you review Templeton Rye? I’m from the state of Iowa and it has a great history in the state of Iowa!
"I drink whiskey so I don't feel anything" Truest statement ever!!!
Speaking of the Glenora Distillery...
In a couple of weeks my birthday is coming up and I have decided to celebrate with whisky!
I won a bottle of Glenfiddich Winter Storm back in November, and I figured my birthday is a good time to crack it open. Very excited!
Muppets FTW
I've been wanting to try Macallan ruby have u?have loved the rest of cheaper Macallans didn't like sennia don't want to drop 300 plus for a ruby
I know it's a cheap whisky, but have you ever reviewed old masters blended scotch?
Hi Fellas,
Is it experience or a wee bit wishful thinking to think one is able be able to taste 1/2 of percent of a certain whisky in a blend? I understand that Caol Ila can be a distinct flavour but 'round numbers' that would work out to only about 40 bottles of CI in the 7900 +/-total bottles.

Rex, not the mooch we need but the mooch we deserve.
Springbank is not for everyone. Campbeltown is its own thing. But try the Cask strength 12 before you give up. or the 15
You should never form lasting impressions of a whisky on one pour. Buy a bottle and live with it, then decide.
Springbank is phenomenal. Buy it from the bottle yes there is something wrong with you or just your experience in general.
I'd be a viewer with or without Rex but Rex adds a ton to the overall charm of the show.
Another good choice would be the Battle of the Glen 15 year, if my doctor gives me good news tomorrow im gonna go pick it up, or at the least try and get the specialty liquor store to track it down for me.
Love the Muppet reference!
What’s about “Vault Box” in the future!? I could imagine✔️
8 minutes later after forgetting to comment about the whiskey the whole video, "I like this by the way."
A little jealous you guys got to try the Compass Box extravaganza. Do you guys have Teeling Single Grain in the vault? Would yp u do a review on it?
It's awesome! will do soon.
Can you guys review Buchanan's12yr 18 and 21 year
When I visited the Glenora, I was told by the tour guide that it was in fact them who took the Scotch Whiskey Association to court.
YES!
Question: fireball is only 33% ABV, and yet it says “Whisky” right on the bottle. Isn’t that not allowed?
Only because US is giving Canada deference for allowing something they would call "whisky" or flavored whisky in their own country.
Strawberry rhubarb pie tastes like strawberry. The rhubarb makes it kind sour and bitter. Rhubarb itself doesn’t tastes like strawberry
Tastes whiskey: “Ah yes that gives me a vey chubbed up note with a hint of vanilla. OH! WAIT! No; now I am fully chubbed up.” -puts down my angels Envy-
Awesome job, Chad. Watched to the very end hoping you put in a "chubbed up" hamster dance.
12 hr night shift an that song stuck...thanks guys
So I need Rex’s moochology opinion. I have had a crazy few days and I pulled the bring my own bottle and not even open it through the whole night trick. I brought a bottle lephroig 10 (I definitely know I misspelled that) and never had opened it. Even though I went through a few bottles of my friends whiski(e)s. Does that warrant master moochery yet?
Just so you know the bottles I went through were very expensive somewhere around $350 here in Ohio. Which is very expensive considering how our liquor market is out here.
King of Whiskey, impressive! What were the whiskeys? You're clocking in at a solid level 557.
That is amazing. Your mom is the most badass mooch ever
Yaaaah. You're mom out-mooched you at every level.... I don't know if you should be annoyed or proud. 😂
Can y'all do a top five bottles for around $50?
I couldn't agree more about how cultural and experiential differences really fuck up note comparisons and communicating the impression one gets from a given whisky. For instance when you chaps describe smells and palates using what are clearly American dishes I find myself always at a loss. I'm sure this is remediable through some kind of unified theory of whisky notes that describe what those subjective experiences might point to that is an objective element of a whisky.
That was a haunting dance. Moved a part of me I didn't want moved...
Awesome job, Chad. A+ would chub again
We're reviewing it today! Video to show up next week most likely
Whiskey Vault Sweet
Charlie, I don't know if they can ship to you but Pavillion Liquors in Surfside, SC has 2 bottles of Phenomenology. They are on the web. The price is around 150.00 I think. They also have No Name.
FRAGLE ROCK YEAH!
Try defiant its made in NC
You guys rock.
Instead of adding water, i like to take a sip and spit it back into the glass. It adds a great depth that water doesnt provide
exceptional malt!
Review SPEYBURN 10yr it will blow your minds coming from a small distillery it puts alot of speyside bigs to shame
The Speyburn Orach was the first whisky I ever tried and I enjoyed it - but now after trying so many I can see where it fits in the spectrum. I've never tried the 10yr, but for the price point for the Orach, you really can't beat the quality with its price (about 25 US dollars+tax here)
Question for the Somm (Rex, drink whisky)
I've noticed that some master blenders use colored glasses when they nose the whisky. My theory is that the tainted glass, allows the blender to not get distracted by the color of the whisky, and therefor make more precise decisions, when it comes to which whiskies should be blended... Is this even a thing, or am I just on a wild goose chase? Stay awesome 🥃
it wouldn't surprise me if that was true.
yeah, it's blue glass if what I've heard is correct.
Jimmy Leg that was the color I was referring to. Richard Paterson has these
Daniel,
Any chance you can do a Bruichladdich Back Art 4.1 and 5.1 comparison?
oh man, that's an expensive comparison. I'll see what we can find.
have you guys tried the royal salute?
Some of your jokes remind me of classic MST3K and Rifftrax. Are you guys fans by chance?
of course!
Maybe you guys need to do a review on the unofficial Rifftrax scotch, J&B! Be sure to have a couple of well done new york strip steaks with it!
Also, its the "Province" of Nova Scotia, we have 10 provinces 3 territories.
thank you!
Were not offended or anything, Canadians are a lot more easy going than the Scottish Whisky Association, I also had the chance to meet the people who make Laird Fintry, they are very pleasant people, tried their bourbon, it wasn't bad at all.
dont hate on rex .he thrives on it.l treasure the moochness .
I like Rex. Compass Box however, the jury is still out.
Rex is just a slightly very slightly cooler version of nerdlyness. Lol but i still like him. Lol
Did Daniel just indirectly say he loves Orangerie? Is that the one magical flavoured whisky for which he admires?
No, I despise that one. But primarily because I have a bad memory associated with it.
3:42
rex, start throwing backhand underhand, you'll make every shot
So I️ have an idea for some fun Friday activities that I’m sure both of you will like. You take a suggestion from the comments for a blend. Then on Friday you recreate that blend. oh man.. I heard it in my head too....
You know you’ve made it when you have haters!
Your guys dancing reminds me of Elaine from Seinfeld
YES!
The Compass Box Blendageddon?
Rex,
Unlike pound cake, rhubarb pie does not ship particularly well. Pretending to misrepresent the flavour profile in hopes of trolling the tribe to send you samples WILL NOT WORK!
Sincerely,
T. ❤
last time i checked daniel 500 people is still 10 times 50 people...
dont leave rex
ha haha aha... Dorks! love it...
Now that should have been the whiskey down song!
lol. "chubbed up for compliance issues."
daniel "the chubbed up" whittington
Awesome review guys. I love this whisky.....a little overpriced, but amazing nonetheless:) I can totally spot the Talisker!
How the hell could somebody not like Rex or Daniel?
Hate Rex? I loathe Rex! JK - Backyard rules. :)
The WV w/o Rex would be like Rush without Geddy Lee!
So hold off on that. before 2:50 rex's glass is almost empty. then after it has more content.
Rex, I love you.
Am i the only one that would be interested to see these fine gents do a Blind Whisk(e)y taste test?
OMG! I just realized Rex is Fozzie Bear!
Did you guys jump 2k in subscribers since yesterday??
They are growing exponentially!
Duck the 15 that doesn't need Rex I personally gotta have Rex just to drink

hahahaha. Yeah, I'm studying like crazy and developing the new curriculum as we speak.
What level somm is Rex now
rhubarb taste like sour strawberry :D ... rhubarb pie is favourite of my wife, so I know thing or two about rhubarb :D

The reason so many Scots settled Nova Scotia is because they got chubbed up over how much Nova Scotia resembles Scotland.
I believe it.
Or their landlords fucked them over in Scotland. It's one of those.
That is why they came to Canada, a good portion settled Nova Scotia because its like Scotland, with more hellish winters.
I always liked you Unbound.
Jimmy Leg Thanks Jimmy. The feeling’s mutual. Wait, you used the past tense. Liked. Does this mean we can no longer be friends? Because if I thought you were no longer my friend, I don’t think I could bear it. ;)
Rex you are legendary. Stay magnificent!
I'm getting #chubbedup thinking about the bottle of Deanston Virgin Oak I'm about to open.
ROFL...how did i miss this episode..
Daniel, you really need to do the beads. Please
Bring back #rexmonth!
Hair pie?
Actually Rex does look like the mana, mana guy. How can you not like the mana, mana?
Calo Q. Daniel and Rex would look awesome as muppets. I can just imagine it as they are singing.
i think you underestimate the number of people that just want good information and review about whiskey....
chubbed up
i saw the tasting, but was there a review? rex week needs to take control again!
hahahaha, yeah, it may or may not have missed out on a full review. Just like yesterday's Kentucky Owl. A bad trend.
I figured you were just keeping with the Compass Box philosophy of everyone who tastes it will have their own opinion. So you weren't putting ideas in our heads.
3:15 c'mon guys.. are you gonna make me say it? Do i have to type it?
WHISKY!!!!!!!
