    Nice job man on both the video and the work under your hood.
    Back in November I picked up an old 77 Sierra K15. Whoever owned it before me dropped in a 5.7 TBI with a 700R4 and np205 transfer case out of an 87 Suburban. Nothing has been hooked up.
    I'm an old guy who grew up around carburetors and old square bodies. The easiest thing for me to do is a carb swap.
    Your engine bay looks sweet man, it's clean no clutter beautiful work

    I converted my 93 Cadillac Fleetwood from TBI to carburetor because TBI doesn't like big cams high flowing heads and engines that push way over 350 horsepower. I absolutely love working with the carburetor. I don't even touch it really after initial tuning it just fires right up and goes. My TBI was having ton's of issues I rebuilt it and everything still had issues with the TBI so I did the next best thing build the engine to the point that TBI is useless lol!

    Yours is a late 1987 model square with Tbi. I’ve seen a few of these. Know someone who is the original owner with one.
    All obs trucks in 1988 got Tbi. The oil pressure transmitter has to see pressure for the fuel pump to operate. It’s a fail safe if you loose oil pressure.
    There are some instructions on what to bypass online.

    GREAT video, finally a CLEAR video I could take a few screen shots for reference, I have an '88 Square body, its not necessarily the oil pressure switches, its mainly just having Keyed power, you can pull power from the Purple w/ White tracer that went to the 4 pin connector on the distributor to the TACH connection if you were running an HEI, then put the power wire from the old coil to the BAT connection on the HEI, or do like you did with the MSD box, I used the MSD Pro Billet that has everything built in including rev limiter an external coil.. My wiring harness I stripped back and labeled keyed or non keyed, etc then brought them back through the boot and coiled the tails under the dash in case I want to use them later for any accessories. Where the AC was is that a block off plate? I'm looking at getting rid of the factory unit and going with the cleaner looking Vintage Air unit, I went with the Brodix heads, tried 2 sets of edelbrock heads an they were Both junk, I wish I had looked at some of the horror stories on Utube before buying, I dont have the provision for the temp sensor in the head but it was just for the TBI anyways, the one at the thermostat is for the gage, again absolutely FANTASTIC JOB!

    I still run the Tbi on my 92 Silverado. It’s the same Ecm, same Tbi units used in the trucks and cars. And it’s useable on my 350. 1990 iroc 350 heads, 083 castings, small chamber, milled, gives me 9.7:1 compression, small vortec hydraulic roller cam, rebuilt Tbi, larger cop car injectors, air horn cleaned up and milled off. Custom burned chip. 17 mpg at 80 plus. Moves the 4400 pound shortbed out pretty good. And mine is also a 5 speed. I have gone back and forth with changing the Tbi to carb. Hard to argue with 17 mpg and there is no way I could run 87 octane with my compression and a carb. The timing still controlled by 7477 Ecm. Ran this setup before I got the custom chip and 7477 Ecm and it demanded 93 octane. For me it was worth keeping the Tbi. I have a few big block Tbi units. When I change to those I will get another chip burned for the application.
    You have to have a tps and the TV cable for the 700r4 to shift properly.
    For those with the heads with the 4 bolts in the middle at the different angle, the china made rpm air gap intakes from professionals products come with the spacers for the 4 center bolts so you don’t have to grind an intake.
    Tbi pumps are 14 psi pumps.
    Maybe I will go carb. I run all msd on my 74 Camaro. I have looked at msd adapter wiring to hook all msd into the factory harness so I won’t have to cut anything, maybe have to cut the msd adapter harness. But factory wiring stays intact.
    If I get to that point in power. My custom chip removed the factory rpm cut off and fuel cut off.

      Kerry Carrizal use the pink wire to run your distributor. Leave all of your wiring alone until you test run it before you start cutting wires out.i didn’t have to mess with any of my wiring to keep the fuel pump running. The only thing I had to do was make sure my oil sending unit and pressure gauge were hooked up along with a ground wire that goes to the back of the passenger side head. Haven’t had any issues with the fuel pump yet. 👍

Thanks

    • @ModdedProjectsGarage
      @ModdedProjectsGarage  4 роки тому

      I just got rid of the wiring I wouldn’t be using anymore. As far as gauges go I just kept all of my factory gauges for oil pressure and engine temp. Only gauges I added that I can think of were the fuel pressure gauge which was mounted directly to my fuel pressure regulator and then I added an air/fuel ratio gauge. For AFR gauge you just need to add an o2 bung by your header collector and finish it up with some simple wiring. Other than those gauges I left everything alone. I used all of the same plugs in the head and block for my factory gauges and left the computer alone.

But i can get chips for it so it will increase the fuel and air ratio. Im wondering if i will need to put a carburator on it. Also will i have to do any thing with the computer, like flash it or something?

    • @ModdedProjectsGarage

    I’m doing a tbi to carb swap but have a question. So I took off the fuel pump block off to install a fuel pump but it looked different. There is supposed to be a little rod thing that interacts with the fuel pump. How did you do your fuel delivery? I’m guessing not a mechanical fuel pump as that didn’t work for me... please explain if you know

    • @ModdedProjectsGarage
      @ModdedProjectsGarage  4 роки тому

      The TBI trucks all have an in-tank fuel pump. They have a line that brings fuel to the TBI unit and there is another line for a return. I left the in-tank pump and just ran it through a fuel pressure regulator ( the TBI needs more psi than a carb). Once you regulate it down to around 5-7 psi you are good. If you go this route make sure you get a regulator with a return. For a mechanical pump you would need a fuel pump push rod. I know on later blocks they did not have a provision for that rod ( there was never a hole drilled for it). I’m not sure if that’s how your block was or not.

    • @kipbarksdale1758
      @kipbarksdale1758 4 роки тому +2

      Yeah my block doesn’t have the push rod which is the problem I ran into. I might go to scrap yard and pull sending unit out of an 87 and try to use that

    • @ModdedProjectsGarage

      I was having surging problems. Checked for vacuum leaks. None found. And replaced multiple parts in the TBI system. Still did it. I had the 383 stroker ready to go and knew the TBI wouldn’t handle what I was going to do to it, so I just ditched it all together. To get all the parts that I have just to get rid of the TBI I would say I’m in over $1k with carb, intake, fuel regulator, fuel lines, fittings and ignition. It can be done much cheaper though. I went with a pretty high quality setup because of my future plans with the build.

      My TBI was having issues where it would surge like it had a vacuum leak, but I couldn’t find a leak anywhere. I replaced quite a bit of parts on the TBI and it never solved the issue. I had the same issue with the amount of info I could find and decided it wasn’t worth it anymore and when I was swapping to the 383 I didn’t want to mess with the TBI for it to work right with the hp numbers and cam that I was using. Just scrapped it and went with the carb!

      I only ended up keeping the wiring for the distributor and the oil sensors on the block. And obviously the alternator and such. From what I could understand the oil sensors are what turn on the fuel pump? I could be wrong, but mine still work after the engine is cranking. I cut a lot of wires out that were for the TBI unit

      @oldschool-ef4jz 3 роки тому

      The truck I'm doing has the factory dual tanks and I'm working from the tanks to the front just to see exactly what all sends power to the pumps, I think the only thing that the computer controlled was timing and oil pressure switch control fuel pumps, I believe that there was a rollover safety switch to cut the fuel off , The truck is an early production 87 because my dad bought it in November of 1986 and the ecm seems to have been spliced into the wiring harness

    Yeah there's not much you can do in terms of upgrades with the TBI engines. Instead of going back to a carburetor to restore some of those lost ponies that have gone to pasture I went the opposite direction and upgraded to multi port fuel injection.
    I have a 91 single cab short bed 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive Chevy 5.7. I went into the bottom end and and replaced main bearings and piston rings. Then I swapped the heads for some junkyard vortec heads. Swapped the cam for a pretty aggressive Comp roller and did a valve job to match the cam new lifters and push rods. Holly dual plane intake with the Holly multi port fuel injection system and I robbed a fuel sending unit and fuel line from a wrecked 2007 Silverado and used fuel injection management programming recommended from Holly to run their multi port fuel injection system. I put a set of Eddlebrock long tube headers and ran duel 8inch Cherry Bomb glass packs 2.5 inch pipes dumped down under the bed. It's a little road eating machine now.
    Next I'm gonna drop it about 2 inches in the front and back, take care of the bodywork, redo the interior and seat, probably upgrade the dash cluster, and get it a nice new set of wheels and rubber to sport.

      @@ModdedProjectsGarage well it's a 2 wheel drive so honestly it didn't feel right lifting it and putting big tires on it.
      Plus it was my grandpa's truck before I got my hands on it. He bought it brand new in 90 and he had until 2018. He always talked about dropping it and restoring it some but just never had the money.
      Front end was sloppy and the breaks could hardly stop the thing anymore. He refused to let me work on it or take it anywhere to get fixed. I told him I would pay for everything. He's just too good to ask for help.
      So I hit a police auction and found a 2015 4 door GMC 1/2 ton 35k miles on it for like $10,000. I took it by his house and said "I'll trade you trucks" and threw him the keys and used my spare to drive the sloppy jalopy home. We traded titles and I've been working on it ever since.
      I'm still thinking about dropping another 2 or 3 inches but I don't want it to be too conspicuous if I'm going for the sleeper look.

    The simplest answer to get rid of tbi is gutless and to top it off no one makes a tune or anything for the tbi so your very limited on what you can do carb is wayyyyy better anyway

      For the amount of money you will spend to get it working again you might as well throw it away and upgrade to performance parts and get some extra power out of that engine.

      Swap definition - “an act of exchanging one thing for another” .. exchanged the TBI for carb.. “swap” still makes sense to me 🤷🏼‍♂️
