A few people have mentioned this, and they appear to be correct. At the time I made this video, even while testing, I assumed that the battery was being charged but it isn't, despite what was mentioned in this video. I appreciate that this was pointed out, and I am pinning this comment for others to reference.
Amazing unit, Love it., thanks Dave.
Holy crap! GREAT video and WOW! Now that’s a killer monitor. This is probably the most advanced and feature filled monitor I’ve seen recently. Thank you. Did I say GREAT video? No? GREAT video man!!! 👍👍👍
You're too kind lol. Thank you 🙏
great video Dave! thank you
Awesome video. I'm probably too small time to need all this, but I love the idea and wish I had one. I really like that it has 48v XLR!
Great review! Thank you Dave.
Thank you!
This is super helpful. Thanks.
Dave is an amazing name lol fantastic video clear and concise. Nikon just updated firmware for Z6 now does black magic raw so I imagine a ton of people will be looking into these monitors now. Thanks
Definitely! And I agree about my name haha thanks for watching
Good job on the explaining..
Excellent👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Wow, great monitor !
Yeah, it's fantastic! Probably the best I've used to date!
Dave Andrade - Post. Color. Gear. : Really digging the fact that you can record in monitor
Nobody ever mentions audio, but it's spot on too! Nice one mate!
Blackmagic has superb pre-sale customer support. Unlike for example Atomos or Odyssey. This monitor-recorder records in Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD and DNxHR. However, just so you know, there are cameras out there that record already using one of these two codecs internally.
If they ever get these monitors to give you BRAW with any camera it would be super popular. Nice product review Dave.
Yeah that would be amazing. Just the EVA1 and c200 right now I think. And thanks Jim, I appreciate it.
Hey Jim, I just happened to come across this comment again while answering another one, and it's funny that 2 years later, they DID actually release that ability to other cameras, such as my Panasonic S5! Go figure!
Great review
Thanks Paul, appreciated.
@@PostColorGear absolutely!
Hi Dave,
Thanks for this informative walk-through!
Two questions:
1. Is there a way to display the legend for the false color on the side of the screen? (The bar with the IRE Levels and representing colors)
2. Can you also display the scopes on the bottom right corner, while examining the image? (The way it used to be possible on the URSA 4K and URSA Mini 4.6K screen)
Great review - thank you! Can this record to the sd card and to an ssd (via usbc) simultaneously - essentially creating a real time backup?
Can you do an 8X zoom of the footage to pull focus like on the Blackmagic cameras?
Is it possible to use it only as a viewing monitor and record internally on cards in my eos R5? Thank you for the great video!😊
what about playing back and back to record? does it takes a while to load? does it has auto rec triggering? only by TC? great video. 10x!!!
Nice video, but is it possible to see waveform/histogram in small popup?
any chance to see sample in bright day light ?
Hello. Will i be able to get an hdmi out when I connect an sdi in??
I connected my 6k pro to my new Video Assist 7" 12G but can't see 4k on the video assist (only 1080p). How do i view it in 4k?
Wondering what’s the best recording format for 4K using the X-H1 with the video assist? Thanks
Thanks for the video, two questions.
1) how did you get the histogram to show up on the dock next to the record button.
2) in my audio settings I can only see options for xlr line and mic, but no option to switch to video. Am I missing something or do I need an upgrade? It’s no idea to have to run xlr every time I want record with it.
Thanks for you help
is there picture zoom to check focus while filming? Thanks
Hi Dave,
Thanks for this informative walk-through!
one questions can you tell more about codec quality
In what sense? What the options are? Or if they are high quality? If the latter, then yes, they're amazing. Blackmagic RAW and DNxHD are so easy to edit with.
Hi!
When Lut is ON what's happen for the SDI Output? On a other monitor, do you see the Lut during real time filming?
Do my black magic pro g2 can record black magic raw ...... why would it not be able to transfer black magic raw to a black magic raw moniter such as this ?
Can you use the HDMI OUT while recording ProRes? For example, can I connect my A7iv camera to Video Assist to record ProRes; but also use the HDMI out from the Video Assist as a video pass through to something like BMD ATEM switch for live streaming?
What a bout quality and phantom power of the xlr audio inputs?
Nice Review, but can the G9 trigger the recorder? If not, how about a Ninja V? Thanks.
Can you also have the video in full screen with the waveform monitor in small like you would use on SONYs integrated view finders?
Hey Dave, what is the latency like on this monitor? I am thinking about getting a 5" for my Red Komodo which has a 12G SDI out. But I film a lot of action and need something with low or zero latency.
Most latency issues I’ve experienced from working in film have come from cheap wireless video systems. If you’re hard-lined into the monitor, you shouldn’t have issues with latency.
Any recommendation for a v-mount battery to connect both the 12hdr and the bmpcc 6k???
If this could play a video from the memory card and record the HDMI/USB-C input at the same time, it would have been a dream unit.😬
Torn between this and an Átomos Ninja V. Will shoot with Sony A7sIII cams.
Can this connect to a Blackmagic Web Presenter?
Did they address the “V30” Sandisk SD cards?
I’ve got an older Video Assist that refuses to take the V30s. I want to upgrade the Video Assists to these, but I’ll need to figure out another card option. Or just stick to the SSDs.
Thanks for the video. I don´t get how to change the fps. Your Format: 1080p60 . Mine says 1080p50. But my camera is to 25fps
Thamks dave. Perfect review. Hey can i control my aperture and iso etc vs monitor so it saves looking at 2 screens? Thanks buddy 😘
Thank you! and unfortunately, no.
What sd card is recommended to record blackmagic RAW?
Hi ! Amazing vid, just 1 question
With à Canon 1dx Mark 3, will it be able to record 4k60p in prores or any other codec ?
It will show the image on the moniteur or not cause it said it support 2160/60p but…?
Thanks !
Those are a lot of input options. I like the SD card and USB-C hard drive option. Much better than sliding in an SSD.
I absolutely agree with you!
Dave Andrade - Post. Color. Gear. Now, is there a mounting solution for USB-C hard drives? 🤔
Secure connection and device mounting problems due to the fact that BMD had placed the USB-C port on the bottom of the monitor-recorder, and very close to the center 1/4-20 mounting hole. Using an SD card or two with these recorders would be the much safer way to go IMO.
How's the fan noise?
can you use this device to record from a TV, game console, or PC/laptop HDMI out.
Yes, actually some of my testing was footage from a laptop. Thanks for asking!
Is the fan always on and is it noisy? Thanks for the video sir, very helpfull!
No, and no, not at all. :)
Can this monitor also double as a capture card?
Is his ok for stills shots
Hey Dave! Thanks for the vid. Can you record to both SDs at the same time for the backup? Or to 1 SD ant external drive?
Apologies for not responding sooner. I mentioned this in another comment, but basically: Unfortunately, no, according to Blackmagic. I didn't attempt it myself, but that's the response I received.
Hi Dave , Thanks for the video which is very helpful.
I've got a question regards triggering record on the Blackmagic Design Video Assist 7" 12G monitor.
Recently I got a BlackMagic URSA Mini Pro 12K and looking to get a 7" monitor that possibly connects to my camera with option of trigger recording when pressing recording button on the camera itself or on the grip. In order to avoid double pressing Record on the camera and on the monitor individually.
Do you know if this monitor would sync with my BlackMagic URSA Mini Pro and would trigger recording on monitor if I start recording on the camera?
Thanks for your reply.
Cheers, Alex S.
Let me try to get an answer for you. I don't own the Ursa Mini Pro, so I am not 100% sure.
Can you do a dual SD card recording or dual SD and SDD recording on the 7inch 12G model?
Unfortunately, no, according to Blackmagic. I didn't attempt it myself, but that's the response I received.
Anyone know if you can set the unit to trigger from start stop flags over SDI and then play recorded clips out over SDI?
Thanks for the video! Would you be able to record 2 different formats/codecs into the 2 cards? Like 1 card 4K ProRes HQ and 1 card ProRes Proxy?
Not at the same time. It has continuous recording, so that when one is full, it can start recording to the other, but not at the same time.
@@PostColorGear Cool thanks for taking time to reply
I have several old 90s sd broadcast cameras. Can the blackmagic monitor take standard definition sdi signal and record it full hd? Or i have to upscale it in post?
I don't believe so. As I mentioned around the 3 minute mark (maybe just a little bit after), if your camera can't export a resolution or frame rate that the Assist records in, nothing will happen. You can always verify with Blackmagic, however.
Can you connect an input for sdi and the output that is for hdmi? convert this?
You can. I personally didn't test this, to be honest, but based on those that have - it works.
What’s the battery life of this screen using NPF 570 or 770 batteries? I’d like to avoid the 970 because of the bulk
That's a great question. I apologize, I don't have any of those to test.
I am trying to record proxy files to the SD card in the monitor. But the metadata is burned into those files. Does anyone know how to get rid of that or stop it from happening?
Hi - is there an option to power the camera at the same time via the NPF batteries?
In theory, you could. The system only uses one source at a time, but yes, you can have it plugged in while there are batteries attached.
Is it capped at 4k 30fps like the previous version?
Nope. 4k 60fps for this one.
Hi there! I’m having trouble getting the grid to display on my 3g 5” model.
Frame guides appear when I select them, but when I toggle the grid to “on” it will not appear. I see mention of a “grid menu” in the manual, but I do not see any page of the menu dedicated to the grid.
Any thoughts?
I apologize, I'm not sure. May be a good question to pop over on the Blackmagic forums.
I wish I had a better response, honestly.
@@PostColorGear Thanks for your response! I ended up finding it. 😁
In another review I saw where the 5 inch version has some significant latency issues with a gh5. I will be using an S1 - so was wondering if you experienced this with the 7 inch model? Thanks...
I know what review you're referring to, and to be honest, I didn't test it. It wasn't enough that it caught my attention, but I didn't do a "side by side" with the LCD. Maybe that is something I can do in the near future. Too many variables to say whether I just didn't notice it, or there is a difference between the G9 I have, and the GH5...or maybe even the HDMI cable (so on and so forth)
Dave - Post. Color. Gear. Thanks so much for your reply. Yes, there are a lot of variables - you are right. I notice that my shinobi has some latency issues as well. So it is really hard to tell; cables, camera, etc... Its good that nothing was super apparent, though. Thanks again - and really nice review!
While using the monitor can all menus be hidden for full screen?
Kevin Norris yes it can,
Can Blackmagic Design Video Assist 7 Inch 3G SDI HDMI Recorder Monitor operate BMPCC4K via Micro Converter
BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 3G???
Hi. Thanks for a great video, was looking for this. One question if i may. Where do i find the possibillity to make the nits higher? Out in the sun it's not that clear. I cant find the way to adjest the nits.
Unfortunately no. That is just how the screen is manufactured. Having said that, there should be a brightness option. If it's at the fullest, then there's no way that I'm aware of that you can make it any brighter.
@@PostColorGear thank you! Will try that
@2:00 the blackmagic does not have a battery charger builtin, you have to use an external charger. @6:06 this is not used to change screen brightness. it changes the brightness of the tally LED. screen brightness is controlled through the monitor overlay controls in the upper left.
You are correct, and thank you for pointing those out. I have pinned a comment, regarding the charging information error that I made.
Hi, is it a good solution for Sony users? (A7III here) or am I better with Atomos? I'm using Davinci for editing
Either / or would be fine. That it up to you :)
I though it is official video, excelent production! Regarding that you can power and charge at the same time I think you are not correct.
You're right and thank you for the kind words
What if you already have a Blackmagic 6k. Can you operate the camera with the screen?
Unfortunately no.
do you think you can use it as an editing screen
Technically, I think you could connect it up, and use it, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it. It's a little too small, for that, anyway.
Does it also record 12 bit color as is ProRes 4444?
No, it doesn't record ProRes 4444, it records 10 bit ProRes 4:2:2
Do you think the 7" monitor is good for on-camera use? Would be too heavy? Is the 5" good enough?
Too heavy? No. I've tested it on my G9. If you have a smaller camera, such as the A6000 line from Sony, maybe. It would be fine, but not needed. The 5" should be good enough, especially if you don't need as many ports.
A SmalRig will solve the problem
Can this be powered with dtap
Yes. And apologies for a delayed response!
anyone tried using this monitor on a sony fs5 or 7 just to see if the SDI raw output converts to braw. I know these cameras are not on the list but maybe it might work.
That's a good question. I wonder. I doubt it, but who knows. If I get my hands on one, I'll test it.
Sony still refuses, so no BRAW with e.g. A7S3. But ProRes422 10 bit is not bad either.
Does the G in "12G" mean "Generation"?
No, 12G is basically the pipeline. So 12Gigs per second which allows for 4k video at 60fps. There is a 3G version too, and that only allows recording up to 1080p 60fps. It's the bandwidth of the ports (for a simple explanation)
did you tried some mics ?
I got my Sennheiser K6+ME66 which is recording at maximum of -20dB (screaming at 30cm of the mic...) So that's a problem for me !
If you have a good mic which is working, I'd be so glad to know, to buy a compatible one ! (took 7" expecially for the good sound they said they have) x)
I use an audio technica mic, but you are correct. Even with the +48 phantom power it does seem to be a little low. Unless yours was extremely low, then yes, it may have been an issue with the mic. Or maybe an issue with a setting? (there are level adjustments within the menu. Without me being there, it is hard to determine)
@@PostColorGear This is not a settings issue unfortunately.. Sound is set at +6dB (the maximum)
If you're recording a normal voice at 1 meter from the mic around -18dBFS, then it's low for a normal use. But that's the way to record like a pro ! haha
+6dB fixed gain? That sounds very unlikely as such a mic gain would virtually let no sound in. Is that input line or mic level? If line, balanced or unbalanced?
@@pascaldeshayes5459 in the Video Assist, I can adjust the gain by -6dB to +6dB. I can also add a PaD @ -15dB.
I'm of course, using it in mic level.
it's balanced mini-XLR also.
It's looking like @Post. Color. Gear. got it better with an other microphone. I'll try to find one and test it !
@@PostColorGear hum... Btw, do you know which model of audiotechnica it is ? and also at what level in dBFS a normal speech at 2meters is recorded ?
Those could be precious informations for my problem !
They can’t record 1080p at 120fps ?
It can. I will outline that in an upcoming video.
is it compatible with Camera Canon C70 ?
It is technically compatible with any camera that can export clean HDMI. Some cameras, however, cannot export raw video. To be honest, I haven't researched the C70, but I also hadn't heard about that being able to (record raw, I mean. It could record prores or DNxHD)
@@PostColorGear
I thank you for the reply
Does this monitor gives you the option to switch multi cameras?
In theory, yes. You could connect one via HDMI and another via SDI, for example, but you'd still need to go into the menu to switch between the two. I don't believe it can record both at the same time, however. I didn't test that to be honest.
better than smallhd ?
I'd say. Just based on the ability to record, the screen, and powering options.
Can it record 4k on Sony A7s ?
As long as the camera can export it, the monitor can record it.
Dave Andrade - Post. Color. Gear. It’s so nice. A7s fight again.

Probally 2 cameras
The SDI ports burn out extremely easily making the monitor worthless, and it cost almost as much as the monitor to have the port replaced. I had three of these and have now replaced them because the SDI port keeps going out. I can not recommend this monitor
