Can't wait to see Part 2 where Eliud tries out your regular diet - I wonder if he's ever been to Ikea 😂 In all seriousness, it's great to see you try new things!
I just had six months training in Kaptagat, I would sometimes see Eliud in the forest (he kindly signed my shoes). For me ugali is the hardest food to eat. When I would go for a massage the foam mattress tended to remind me of ugali, I suspect the mattress has more flavour. I once made ugali more palatable by adding garlic, then rolling it into balls, rolling that in egg yolk, roll that in bread crumbs and deep fry. I highly doubt Eliud would approve.
The green stew you can get the vegetables from most supermarkets. They are called spring greens in the UK. Ugali is made from maize meal not corn meal. Love the videos 👌🏾👌🏾
Regarding water consumption, it's probably relevant that Kenya is warmer than the UK. Also, just found out that Kipchoge's favourite food, Ugali, is on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity!
Ugali is a staple in South Africa too - and many neighbouring countries, going by various names like pap, phutu, sadza (wow autocorrect had a field day there 🤨). Cheap and cheerful and goes with anything!
What is not explained is the amount of sugar they are adding to their tea and how much they drink. Its estimated they are eating a full pound of extra sugar for 1800 cals. The tea is so thick with sugar that they joke the spoon will stand up on its own. They need the caffeine and sugar to fuel runs.
I actually just got back from Kenya, and their portion sizes are HUGE and they do eat tons of fruit as well. Mangoes and bananas are staples. They also include meat probably once a day and eat the meat from the meat too. Funny you mentioned cookies- they are NOT well known for their baked goods. Barely any sugar in it! But their chai is literally straight sugar. It’s so interesting!
I've added their Teff-oat porridge (recipe on their site) to my staple, though I do add honey, which they don't mention on the site. But, I thought to have heard about the honey an interview (I put 0 sugar in my tea, so I guess this compensates). I actually like it a lot. I tried adding cinnamon and it works (optional). Since I live in Canada and maple syrup cans were half price last week, guess what will replace honey next time ;-)
If you're used to eating food with less seasoning then it tastes really good, you can really taste the different veg! This is coming from someone who is continually told the food that she cooks doesn't have enough salt 🤣
I have never understood the idea of eating a lot before a session, especially a long run. For years I did c15 miles on Sundays off a couple of slices of toast with marmalade or honey (no butter). You use the fuel you have stored from the previous day's food intake. If I ate anything more before a hard session or long run I'd be pretty certain to see it again from one end or the other (Sorry!). More seriously, Kipchoge's diet does have similarities to the diet Percy Cerutty was preaching in the 1950/'60s and which his athletes followed when at his training camp at Portsea in Australia.
I totally agree, at least for myself as a mere mortal recreational runner. I kind of think the fueling right before and during running can get out of control, as long as you’re eating adequate carbs and calories during meals.
Guess it's different for everyone! I run best in the afternoon after a big breakfast and a big lunch and maybe even a snack - whenever I went for morning runs fasted or with less than 600-700 calories of breakfast I got stomach cramps and many times had to stop. I don't think there is an objective best way, as long as it works for you! :)
Is there really anything better than hot cocoa after a long run!??! Just for comparison I do about double the calories and half the miles. Although I’m also about double his pace (aiming for 3:30 this spring) so there’s that!
I've liked ugali the few times I've tried it - once at the African Foodcourt at the Dubai Expo and once at a hotel in Nairobi. I found it's just like pasta or white rice - not a lot of flavor - and the flavor of the meal comes from whatever you're eating with it.
His diet is simple but very high in sugar and carbs! he doesn't eat a lot of proteins, like "us" runners, just one egg a day... thats all! he recover with bland, carby, simple, sugary foods! (He also eats ugali).
No way could I eat like the GOAT!!!!I agree with you Phily, need to have peanut butter (the food of the Gods) and ketchup to survive. hanks for the interesting post, enjoy the grind.
It’s funny hearing you say ‘Chai Tea’ - Chai is the Hindi word for Tea so you essentially keep saying Tea Tea, no big deal just sounds funny to my Indian ears : )
hmm.. i dont know food ethics in your country..but i think you can sip the tea after bite the bread or dip the bread in cup of the tea for better bread taste..😂
Choc chip cookies.. CARBS & CHOCOLATE (it’s a health food, right? Antioxidants😂)…absolutely, most definitely passes as part of the 🐐’s diet!🤣 Ive just recently upped the protein after it being a bit too low (apparently-per dietician). I can’t imagine going back now. A bit more protein seems to have made a huge difference to my soreness (well, it seems that way🤷🏻♀️). I guess the moral to all this is that we are so individual! Experiment, see what works for you, & most definitely try different things, but it has become fairly obvious to me after watching a lot of running content that carbs are fairly universally central in most runners diets…I personally can’t imagine being a low carb runner, but if that’s what works for u, go for it!
His diet is the best. All other top long distance runners who win medals eat the same diet. No need for dietitian. It is also the common diet for ordinary Kenyans. I can assure you it is 'the diet' , no obesity here.
I wonder if Kenyan food is anything like Ethiopian food? I used to work with an Ethiopian woman who always brought food to share, but it was incredibly bland (no spices!) And she was well-known as the best cook of their food in our huge city.
What? Three Liters a day? I drink twice that much hiking though I have to admit that the better shape one is in the less you need to drink. When it's hot I think I drink a liter every two hours.
You can't just skip the protein in the dinner from the meat lol. He always mentions how he needs it to recover. You can't take the GOAT's schedule and bastardize it.
So how do you feel? Were you the fastest woman in the world for one day? Eliud Kipchoge doesn't eat much, i'm not sure his diet fits everyone's diet. He is 1,67 meters and weights 52 kilos. he is full muscles. No much fat in his body, he must burn all he eats. The avocados, beans and rice sure give some carbs and fat. The beans and chicken for proteins. If some food is not good, add Ketchup, it will taste like Ketchup. Why even add spices or anything when you have Ketchup. My weight is like 12 more kilos than Kipchoge's, might be the reason i'm like twelve times slower.
Yeah, he's basically an ascetic by our standards as are many Kenyans otherwise, nothing we don't already know about food: greens, beans, a little starch a little protein etc. cut out the sugar and salt although the latter is part of what we call electrolytes, go figure. Just need the willpower, and even then we'd never catch up wit someone who's been doing it his whole life. Reading the link she provided also mentioned eggs. yeah, he's reasonably tall but thin as a rail and carrys no excess weight beyond what's needed for a marathon. I'll also argue England has a much colder climate so a little more fat might be necessary.
I think after eating that for a week and someone told me there was a kebab waiting for me 26 miles down the Rd, I'd be there in under two hrs
😂
Only to find out "kebab" was a euphemism for your legs being cooked at mile 26
Try
Eliud has the same diet I had as a student. For different reasons though.
Why do I think I know those reasons lol😂😂😂😂
Why do I think I know those reasons lol😂😂😂😂

In all seriousness, it's great to see you try new things!
The simplicity of that diet fills my heart with joy.

😂😂😂
Mattress comment deserves more hype
I love how there is a documented achrive video of the legend eliud or grabbing exactly two slices of white bread
The green stew you can get the vegetables from most supermarkets. They are called spring greens in the UK. Ugali is made from maize meal not corn meal. Love the videos 👌🏾👌🏾
Oh and no salt. It’s meant to be bland, you get the flavours from the stews you eat with the ugali.
Ah I’ll have to try that thank you! Bad time to admit I thought Corn and Maize were the same thing? 🫣
@@PhilyBowden anyone would think they are, the colour usually gives the clue. Maize meal is white in colour and corn is a yellowish colour.
@@87scaly that's just yellow corn vs white corn. Maize is corn.
@@adamjohnson5285 my point was ugali is made from the white whatever you call it. If you have seen Kipchoge’s videos you will see it’s the white one.
Regarding water consumption, it's probably relevant that Kenya is warmer than the UK.

also regarding maybe a little more fat in the diet in the other direction
Well done National Champion. Awesome video both, had me smiling all the way through with a lovely warm feeling🏅🍾🎉

Does Eliud have ketchup? Shall we ask him 😂 Fascinating how simple his diet is, great watch!
He is just missing some of them VO2 mushrooms Ben and then he would be all set!
So funny! Class.
His conscience does not allow him, ketchup. Please note.

I’m the same way in the am except coffee with honey
Let's be honest. If IKEA was in Kenya, Kipchoge would be eating the meatballs.... brilliant video as ever.
I'm pretty sure the dude can have a chef if he so wished

I wish mangos was cheaper. I love them
@@hiphopheaven I buy frozen mango in the winter and have it with some kind of high protein dairy (yoghurt or german kwark)

"Felt like a duck" 🤣
I've had a full English breakfast followed by an afternoon half marathon on at least two occasions.
Sugar in tea and white bread? Absolute mad man 😂

Where was the footage from is there an original video?
Philly, you run at 80% of the speed of the GOAT which is phenomenal. You run 2:29 to his 2:01.
11:53 that's one big Ladel 🤣🤣🤣

Great video
I thought he said he doesn’t eat any sugar?
The sugar and the white bread surprised me. I'd never touch that stuff, the rest while bland at least sounded quite heathy.
I'm going to eat EXACTLY what he eats! -instantly adjusts tea to her preference.
I do 2 white English toast with 2 eggs and guacamole and 2 cups of coffee.
Phily, your tap is dripping. While you were having your breakfast at least
It is, it’s a problem 😂

Love the little Greta Van Fleet appearance at 9:49! ❤
How much time do you have to wait after that breakfast before you start running
It’s funny hearing you say ‘Chai Tea’ - Chai is the Hindi word for Tea so you essentially keep saying Tea Tea, no big deal just sounds funny to my Indian ears : )
That fermented milk contains a very high percentage of proteins
Welldone. Hes also running further so you wont need 3litres of water necessarily and with the tea 😊 . Cheers
You do not put salt in the Ugali
Adding tomato sauce for taste is such an Australian thing to do. Did we get that from the Brits?
Oh I never heard that! I’ve always been an absolute ketchup fiend haha
4:49 2slices of banana😂
Phily, correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't you supposed to run the Valencia marathon?
A while ago I was yeah, but cancelled that shortly after my recovery from Covid took a lot longer and scuppered my training for it
nice retro bed 😀

6:50 per mile is pretty quick wow
I love eating untoasted bread, and now I know the GOAT does too! Woo!
I don't nap, it makes me feel worse
I think I could eat like that for a limited period but not long term. I like my spicey food too much.
dip your bread in tea ,its tsate like heaven
Sure wouldnt a few good
ole irish spuds be as good a carb fuel as anything
I would have made a banana sandwich rather than eat everything separately, quicker and tastier!
If you are running 20 km you need 3 liters a day of water
Imagine Eliud forgot to say bread AND butter 😂
Ugali 🔥👊🏾
She just found out about bread dipping? are you joking?!
Life without tomato sauce is unthinkable. It's the difference between dining and fine dining.
On the ketchup front, I'd have probably put a squirt or two in the green stew too and added it to lunchs beans 😁😂
Second run 😭😭😭?!?!
Does Eliud have ketchup 😂😂😂😂 The diet is so basic, we are too used to flavour so I imagine it’s pretty bland. Good to try it out though.
Nop
