Which shows Indy that he always did care for him as a son even though he did a bad job of showing it because he was so caught up in his work but in the moment where he could actually lose his son he chooses him over the thing he’s been searching for his whole life.

@@coreym2971 It's about choosing love over material, which is an elemental thing of all Indy films, like at the end of Raiders when Indy says about those who guard the Ark "they don't know what they have there" and Marion says "well I know what I got here". Indy had spent his entire life searching for relics, he didn't keep the grail but he witnessed it, he tested it's faith, he faced the power of bigger things (God and even Aliens) like all of us. In the end all Indiana Jones relics, no matter how valuable they are, are McGuffins.

That is what shocked me with what both Spielberg and Lucas say, that wasn't the main reason? The name was the reason? No guys, it was cause Indiana realized his Dad searched his whole life for it, but still just wanted his son .

Lucas has always been a story guy. Not exactly a writer or director. The outline of these movies lives in him, but he lets more talented people polish his work.
In preproduction, Alec Guinness appreciated the story, but hated his dialogue, so he brought changes to George. The plot stayed the same, but he ironed out his scenes.

I never thought that Indy was trying to grab it out of greed, but rather he wanted to get it because it meant everything to his father. I always thought it was more his father showing that his son means more to him than the Grail and Indy realizing this.

If I remember correctly there's a book adaptation that gives an insight on the knight's thoughts during this scene. He's both in disbelief and relieved, he never thought someone could ever possibly "Let it go" after all of those years. He's spent all his life witnessing people meet a horrible fate and betray each other because of this relic, but finally, after centuries, he has seen that there's actually someone who would pick family over fortune and glory. These are his final thoughts as he relieves himself of his duty, knowing The Grail has no need to be guarded anymore, for he knows that as long as there's people who can make the right choices, relics like The Grail will always end up where they belong.

I rewatched all Indy films again (yes, including the 4th one) preparing myself for the 5th one, all I can say is The Last Crusade is probably my favorite, I'm not saying it only because of Sean Connery (R. I. P.) who ofc was great but because it has the best storyline imo, it delves better into Indy's character. At the end Indy does not stay with the girl (who turned out to be evil)
, but he won a better prize and it was the reconciliation with his father.

Indy calls the Grail Henry's obsession earlier in the movie. And then his dad calling him Indy and telling him to let the Grail go is the final nail for both men that their family and bond is more important than this particular find.

      @@Cloudstrife112233 "Prime Spielberg is untouchable"
Depends what you are into really.
Back then he didn't touch certain genres nearly as well as others, and some genres not at all.
      For example horror.
Spielberg made some great sci fi - but Ridley Scott got him beat dead to rights with horror on Alien, not to mention delivering some of the most amazing non CG visuals of the late 70s to 80s.
ET was great and all but the effects and alien ship design looked remarkably lazy compared to the effort Ridley Scott, HR Giger, Ron Cobb et al put in for Alien.
(that being said I love both soundtracks for different reasons - Goldsmith was always one of my favourites and the chase score in ET was incredible)

Spielberg points out the obvious, but Lucas points out the deeper meaning. It wasn’t “greed” on Indy’s part, but he wanted a connection with his dad. His dad was obsessed with the Grail, and that’s why Indy wanted to get it. To get the love of his father. When Henry Sr. called his son “Indiana” instead of “Jr.”, he understood his son was more important, and Indiana realized that what he wanted was there all along, and he didn’t need the grail to get it.

I also liked the way Jones Sr. who dedicated his life to finding the Grail didn’t hesitate for a second to let it go in favor of Jones Jr.

    • @Tounushi
      @Tounushi Рік тому

It's a beautiful conclusion to the character arc. His life had been about finding the Grail to achieve illumination, essentially casting Indy aside for the sake of his quest. When the quest becomes an adventure, he really gets to spend time with his son, culminating in two moments where near death experiences bring that relationship into focus: "Oh, God. I've lost him. And I never told him anything. I just wasn't ready, Marcus. Five minutes would have been enough."
Then he sees his son again risking his life to get the Grail that's tantalizingly just out of reach, calls to him in a way that acknowledges him as he has always preferred to be and getting them both to let go of the Grail for good. In the end, it was just a thing.
That's his illumination: realization of the value of familial love. And love is what stood behind the original bearer of that cup.
