The clear witch Hazel has been distilled. So they take the witch Hazel tea and then distill it. It’s clear after that process.
Clean witch hazel is made by steam distillation of leaves or barks. It doesn't contain the pigments which goes into tea which makes your brown color.
Now I want to make my own witch hazel too!! Thank you for this video! And that is such a great point about NOT wanting the gov involved in the beauty industry. We need more personal responsibility and not wanting the gov to do all this work for us!! I’ve lived in Europe before and many people might think it’s so good that they ban so many products (I have thought that way) but now that you said what you did about gov regulation I totally agree.
Hi Kelli. This is the first time I’ve seen your site. I plan to make my first batch of witch hazel soon after I go and collect some twigs from my own trees. I think the reason so much of the bought witch hazel is clear is because it is distilled. It seems to me that the clear would have less of the good nutrients in it, so I plan to make the brown. Anyway, I was so excited to discover that we have witch hazel trees on our property and I am waiting for the blooms to come out before harvesting twigs. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Thank you so much for the Schmerbals Herbals suggestion. I have wanted to move away from Mountain Rose Herbs as well. I had been ordering everything I can from Azure, or finding a more local source or smaller business. But there were some things I just couldn't find at decent prices on.
You are so welcome! I was doing the same thing, Azure carries a lot of the more common herbs but the not so common ones were a struggle! So thankful to discover them!
Thanks for the video. I'd like to add that the reason why some witch hazel toners are clear is because they are technically hydrosols and are made through the process of steam distillation of the plant matter. I think what you created in the video is the extract, and while they both have different benefits, hydrosols don't require alcohol (or any additives for that matter) which is ideal for people with sensitive skin. Unfortunately though, a lot of the commercial grade witch hazel aren't even true hydrosols, they use a combination of extracts with other additives so you're right in questioning their integrity.
So interesting it is brown. I had no idea!
I love the toups and co deoderant!! I have tried so many natural deodorants and theirs is the only one that actually works for me. I have been curious about their lip glosses and will have to try those out now too!
Have you tried their mascara?
I know, I am in awe of how good it works and how little I need of it! I haven't tried the mascara yet, I still have quite a bit of my old brand on hand, but that will be in my next order! If you decided to get it before then or anything else they sell, I'd love to know what you think!!
