He figured out what was going on - used ''figured out'' because Odysseus didn't tell the crew that they were going to Scylla.
@@darkwolf9536 What strikes me is a lot of people villianise Ody on this, and he isn't a good person. But rewatching it strikes me hard that back in "Luck Runs Out" he grabbed Eury aside and was like, "Look, you're my second in command. I cannot have you questioning me in front of our men. You must TRUST me or things will go bad." Then to find out it was Eury STILL didn't trust him when Ody said there was no treasure in the bag and opened it. So at the begining I took it as Ody trying to figure out how to do the payment to Scylla, find out his brother-in-law and second in command betrayed his trust, so the payment will be paid by Eury and the 5 other men that Eury chooses since it's likely those men were going to be the most detrimental to him getting home... and sure enough, as we know what happens next...
I think the idea is that Ody's response to Eurylocus's confession was Eurylocus was given the responsibility of choosing who died without realizing it and he was originally holding one of the torches himself so he would have died if the torch hadn't ended up in another's hands
To add in some context from Greek Mythology: in the original Odyssey, Odysseus must navigate 'the Strait of Messina' which contained Charibdis on one side, and Scylla on the other. Charibdis was a danger that risked losing the entire ship, but *could* be passed safely. Scylla would never destroy the ship, but would always eat 6 crew memebers. So it was safer to sacrifice six men, than to risk losing everyone. Personal belief: I think this was, essentially, an ancient greek "trolly problem" to demonstrate an ethical dilemma.
Fun half-fact: If I remember correctly, he actually did try navigating between them safely in the original, and ALMOST did, but one of the crew distracted him, which meant the ship drifted off the side, towards Scylla a bit, where she then snatched up 6 of their men. He didn't sacrifice them, that was just a touch added to Epic, for the sake of the storyline.

i like to imagine the lyrics sort of represent odysseus' realisation after Erury told him about the windbag. With the exeption of "You hide a reason for shame" that one just fits Eury way more than Ody. "We are the same" Both Ody and Scylla are monsters who will now do anything to survive. "Leaving them feeling betrayed" Odysseus now feels betrayed and backstabbed by Eury. It also foreshadows what's going to happen later in the song as well as what will happen in mutiny. "Breaking the bonds that you've made" The friendship/brotherhood between Odysseus and Eury is officially broken. Ody genuinely couldn't care less if Eury died, since now he knows that one of the main reasons he isn't home and he's suffered so much was one of his closest friends. This is also where Ody changes from "We'll all make it home" to "I will make it home, and try to keep as many men alive" "There is no price we won't pay" Call back to when Odysseus said he'd trade the world to see his son and wife "We both know what it takes to survive" self explanatory

Eurylochus is about to confess his secret and he also tried to do so before (in puppeteer) while Odysseus is actively hiding from his crew that 6 of them will not make it out of this cave alive, he's ashamed because he knows what he is planning to do. "breaking the bonds that you've made" also refers to the fact that Ody is just about to cut the final string of them because of the sacrifice. Everything else I 100% agree
I like that Eurylochus is kind of a red herring in the song. Scylla is singing about betrayal and breaking bonds while Eurylochus is confessing but I think she is singing about Odysseus, he is the only one who knows what they are getting into. Then they resonate at the end as they are both monsters just doing what needs to be done.
What you here: "Light up six torches." What we all know it means: "Goodbye, Eurylochus." Also, I always interpreted Scylla's words in this song as a sort of "Welcome to the other side," moment, like she KNOWS what he just let her do. And in a way, I think she's impressed.
Scylla in Epic has some kinda of telepathic powers, that's why she's singing about hiding a reason to shame, and about they being the same. This fit both Eurylochus and Odysseus

5:56 My personal headcanon is that Odysseus already suspected Eurylochus. The public confrontation in "Luck Runs Out," the unsaid confession in "Puppeteer..." It makes sense. And the fact that Odysseus was the only one protecting the wind bag for nine days straight tells me "Luck Runs Out" had already created a significant rift in their relationship. Eurylochus is second in command. It's his job to carrying out the captain's order of keeping the bag closed. At best, the men would have had to go behind Eurylochus' back to open the bag. At worst... he sanctioned it. All Odysseus needed was confirmation.
"But scylla has a cost" he knew that traveling through her lair would require 6 sacrifices as a toll payment. If they hadn't given the sacrifices, or if they'd tried to fight her, it would've resulted in the ship being destroyed and more lives lost. And so he chose the lesser of two evils. Odysseus may still want to get home with as many men as possible, but he knows now that it's not always possible to make sure they stay alive.

No. No Scylla *always* takes six, if he didn't fight only six would die. The only thing the torches did was ensure that he wasn't any of the six, that's the point of the torches, so he would survive at the cost of any random six men, that's why Eurylochus was so mad in Mutiny

15:33 for this question on eurylochus opening the bag, it’s just as Aeilous the wind god said, keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Odysseus always trusted Eurylochus but it was never the same kind of feeling for him to Ody. Luck runs out he expressed his distrust in Odysseus’ plans and was shut down back then because he knew his place when confronted, but behind his own back, he never trusted him, and opened the bag without considering the risk, only the alleged “lies” his captain told.
Not sure if you remember, but Eurlyochus actually tried to tell Odysseus 'something that I must confess' back at the very beginning of the Circe saga. This was what he was trying to say, but Ody cut him off. So he's been holding this confession in since they got to Circe's island.

To add the context as for the reason Eury opened the bag, remember he's the voice of the crew, and the whole crew wanted the bag opened. So surely even if he didn't open it, someone else would, but since he's the bridge between the crew and Ody, he likely opened it so that random crewmembers wouldn't face Odysseus' wrath, as he'd be more lenient with Eury.
I love seeing how people react to the reveal of Scylla. How creepy she is, the looks on their faces when her neck extends and her other heads turn up. And the dawning horror when her face tips back, showing the jaws of the eel.
Worth noting that Odysseus is the only member of the crew who knows what Scylla is, and that she's ahead of them. He's also the only one who cane up with the idea to kill off six men as tribute.
Scylla is one of the songs with the best assortment of animatics imo. I love all the different ways people show Odysseus feeling betrayed and the different ways Scylla was drawn, my favorite Scylla design being from VirusAP's animatic.
I do think it's important to note that Scylla's words at the start of the song can apply to both Odysseus and Eurylochus. Obviously, Eurylochus hid the fact that he opened the bag, breaking the bonds that he made (with Odysseus). However, Odysseus is hiding his plan to kill off six of the men, a plan that will break the bonds he has made with THEM.
Scylla was originally a beautiful nymph who was turned into a monster by Circe, yes Circe😂. Circe liked a sailor named Glaucus and made him into a god, then Glaucus ditched her for Scylla. So in a bid to reveal Scylla's 'true form', she turned her into a monster. And when Scylla sings 'we are the same, you and I' It refers to Odysseus becoming a monster just like she is.

I think other people have mentioned this but just in case, the reason the crew weren't prepared or ready for scylla was bcs in suffering odysseus was the only one who read the sirens lips, the other crew mates were only following they're captain
A majorly important note here is the entire fact that they're even having to go through Scylla's lair is Eurylochus's fault. He wanted to tell Ody about the wind bag back since Circe's island, which is why he eventually brings it up here, but in that exact moment, what he basically says to Odysseus is 'I'm the reason you just lost most of your crew and have had to detour to this place where you're going to lose even more crew.' Because they were almost home to Ithaca before Eurylochus opened the wind bag. He is the direct reason that they ended up losing most of their fleet to Poseidon, getting blown to Circe's island, going through the underworld, and now having to sacrifice 6 more men to Scylla to try and avoid Poseidon, when they could have been home by now. Yeah. There's a reason Odysseus just kinda shuts down and closes off emotionally, because the other option is to scream. He tells Eurylochus to light up six torches because the only thing he can think to do is what needs to be done, because yelling at his second in command in that moment wouldn't help anything.
I swear, Odysseus is so much better than me. The RAGE I felt and would have felt towards Eurylochus when I found out that he opened the bag when they were basically on Ithaca's doorstep and he decided to open the bag at that moment in time!!!
Scylla's story is quite sad actually, she used to be a Nymph, the most beautiful, and a man was in love with her, Glaucos. However, Circe was in love with Glaucos. Jealous of Scylla, Circe poisonned the water where she usually bathed. When she went in, dogs sprang from he thighs and she was made a monster. She was later slayed by Heracles, as was most monsters lol. She isn't evil, she just does what she needs to survive. So either you try fighting Charibdis (the whirlpool monster next to Scylla's strait), which would usually mean death for everyone on the ship, or pay Scylla's toll of 6 men, otherwise she'd eat the whole crew.
Odysseus responds to Eury’s confession by basically deciding right then and there to sacrifice him to Scylla. Ody knew ahead of time the only way to get through her lair was to give up six men. This song really establishes that Ody has become the monster he said he was going to be, especially the end when his voice joins with Scylla’s to say “we are the same, you and I”.
Oh, the full circle this goes... ok, so, obviously the recall is from Monster, but I'd argue it is a *different* monster that the one we believe will need to become from the song. "What if I'm the one who killed you / Every time I caved to guilt? / What if I've been far too kind to foes / But a monster to ourselves?" and then Odysseus proceeds to list entities (you know the roster, hehe) that did monstrous things in order to difend their friends against their foes (that also works for Poseidon, the respect for gods work for one and the whole Olympus). In this case, we expect Odysseus to become a monster in order to save his crew, as he does in Different Beast (oh, the double entendre of the title!! ), but... "deep down I know this well" -> "DEEP DOWN I WOULD TRADE THE WORLD TO SEE MY SON AND WIFE" He's no monster, he's just a man.
Scylla is psychic and her lines are thought to be hitting vibes with both Ody and Eury. While not lore accurate version of Scylla, I love Gigi's depiction none-the-less. Biggest part is the dichotomy of the gore of her devouring the men that were marked with the torches while she dances around the ship. There is a horrific beauty to her that is both memorizing and terrifying,
A couple "fun" facts: Scylla has a price, and Odysseus knows this. When he tells Eurylochus to light up six torches, the men carrying the torches have been unknowingly been chosen as the sacrifices to pay said price. But also notice that Odysseus had Eurylochus hold one of the torches. Also, Scylla was once a nymph but is now a monster because Circe cursed her with one of her potions because Scylla had garnished the affections of Glaucus, a demigod that Circe was in love with.
So...Odysseus was the only one aware of who they were facing. Her lyrics are a direct message to him. They just happen to coincide with Eury confessing and also are a bit of a mislead that she's talking about him. Odysseus stays quiet most of the song because he is going to do the exact same thing, that Eury did. In short, he can't get mad or he'd be a hypocrite. "Leaving them feeling betrayed, breaking the bonds that you've made. There is no price we won't pay, we both know what it takes to survive." This is why Odysseus joins Scylla's vocals at the ends. He's admitting she's right. And just to note, the torches were marked sacrifices, if they tried to fight or hide under cover of darkness, the whole ship WOULD HAVE been massacred.
so in the book Ody had to choose to sail near Scylla, a cursed nymph who attacks ships and eats people with the 6 monster heads that grew from her thighs, or Charybdis, a monster who's maw opening caused whirlpools. Ody was advised to go nearer Scylla because she could only eat 6 men at once and they also could ask Scylla's mum to tell her not to back for seconds while Charybdis would eat the whole boat
Eurylocus actually tried to tell Ody about the wind bag at the start of the circe saga, but was told it could wait till later. It's just unfortunate that he had to get it off his chest here of all places.
To be fair Eurylocus doesn’t know that they are entering Scilla’s lair, they all had wax in their ears and just because Odysseus can read lips doesn’t mean everyone can. And he also tried to confess earlier on when they first landed on Circes island but Odysseus told him it could wait and to scout ahead. After that they were going to the underworld (definitely not the time). So it makes sense that he might bring it up now. As far as he knows they are finally facing calm waters (Poseidon doesn’t go here) and the sirens gave Odysseus hope that they could get home. So it might seem like the perfect time to have that conversation.
A bit late but I think the concept of “Eurylocus, light up six torches.” Was Odysseus’ way of dealing with him because not only is Eurylocus lighting up the torches for the sacrifices, one of those was meant for him.
Eurylochus tried to confess before (at Circe island) but was stopped by Odysseus. Also they do not know they are in Scylla's lair. Their ears were blocked with wax when the siren told Odysseus that. I think that Eurylochus thinks this is his last chance to fess up before they go home.

8:00 ah but the crew doesn't know that. Ody and we, the audience, learned about the lair of Scylla from the sirens during which they all had their ears plugged. Odysseus is the only one privvy to this information because he tricked the lead siren and read her lips.
This song is my favorite of the saga, because although we see dark and gory stuff throughout the Odyssey a lot, this could in fact be considered one of if not the most gruesome part of it all.
The crew didn't hear the sirens talking about Scylla because they had their ears plugged. Ody had two choices, go through the strait past Charybdis and risk losing the entire ship to the monster or Posiden, or go through Scylla's cave, and lose a few men guaranteed. Only he knew that though, so when he asked for six torches to be lit, he was choosing the 6 men that would die, one for each of Scylla's heads. In reality it would have been pitch black in the cave, so lighting torches isn't unusual. Its only when they start getting attacked does his right-hand man start to suspect Ody knew what was going on. In the original story, Eurylochus realizes what's happening, and starts to throw torches overboard.

The worst part for Odysseus with the revelation of his friends betrayal is that literally the song right before, less then a week in world, he told his friend he needed him to trust him and to be on his side. and his friend agreed. Odysseus was realizing his friend hadn't even waited a week before going back on his promise and betraying him for potential treasure. Also a thing about Odysseus not responding, but Scylla singing about betrayal, is that a theme with this song is that Scylla and Odysseus are one and the same, both monsters doing what they see as necessary to survive, her singing was effectively his response, what he was thinking at the time.
Gigi knows how to make unnerving monsters, that's for sure 😂 Also, only Ody knew about where they were going. Only he learned that from the siren and didn't tell the others. So they had no idea that the six torches were basically making them targets for Scyllas six heads and feeding the heads is the price they need to pay to get through. So Ody telling Eury to light up the torches, counting on that he would keep one for himself, was his indirect response to the news about the windbag. He knew that those holding the torches would die, it was just sheee dumb luck that Eury traded off his torch in the middle of the chaos and survived. And Scylla is basically telling Ody they are the same, forced to be monsters because of the gods. Circe, daugther of Helios, cursed Scylla to be the monster she is out of jealousy. The gods keep pushing at Ody and putting him through shit and forcing him to become a ruthless monster in order to get home. So she sees them as kindred spirits pretty much.

Ody was trying to take care of the problem with Eury by having him light the torches, expecting him to keep one, and didn't account for him handing it off to help others. Scylla is the way she is because of Circe (THAT is a long story).
Backstory of Scylla (Or one of them at least): Circe had fallen in love with a sea god named, Glaucus but he preferred Scylla to her, who at the time was a beautiful young lady. Circe was jealous and did something extremely petty, (in my opinion at least). She poisoned the water where Scylla frequently bathed, so when Scylla got in one day she transformed into a six-headed beast who ate six crew members of any ship in order to let them pass through her lair. (Hence the six torches Ody asks Eurylochus to light up)
Also I would like to point out that Ody doesn't tell him to hand out the torches. Eurylochus is the one that takes it upon himself to hand them out....he took that power into his own hands just a foreshadowing for the next song
Oddy is the only one who reads the Siren's lips and never tells the crew that they are going to Scylla's lair (in "The Odyssey" he did). They didn't know that he was literally going to his death.

If you go back to the animatic Gigi did for Keep Your Friends Closer, Eurylocus wasn't one of the men Odysseus spoke to when he came back with the wind bag (but the large man with only one eye - who was the last Scylla took - was). The rumour about the bag containing treasure obviously did spread round the crew - and in the Odyssey story, the ships were in sight of the Ithica coast when they were all blown back out to sea. Eurylocus telling Odysseus in this moment that it was him that opened the bag meant it was his fault that they ended up travelling so much longer and further to get back. Also, Scylla singing that she and Odysseus are the same deep down is her saying "we both are seen as monsters, but we are only doing this because we have to survive - it isn't who we really are" - she was originally a nymph transformed by Circe's magic but now has to feed herself to live by eating passing sailors on ships.
In all honesty, Scylla doesn’t get people to confess their secrets. She’s not talking to Eurylochus, she’s talking to Odysseus. Scylla was able to delve into his mind and find out his plan: sacrificing six men for each of her heads in exchange of the lives of the rest. Scylla, now knowing this information that he’s ashamed of doing no matter how necessary it may be, is telling him that they must do what they have to do in order of survival; that’s what makes them truly monsters. Odysseus still clung onto some of his humanity, and she’s telling him to leave it behind just like she did because she actually doesn’t enjoy killing the people who go through her lair, but it’s something she has to do because she needs to feed herself. That’s why she says that him and her are the same- doing what they must do, becoming the monsters, to survive.
The interesting thing, is that if Odysseus allowed Eurylochous to tell him this back in puppeteer, this betrayed feeling Scylla is talking about likely would never have happened.
The 6 torches was a response to the bag, or part of it anyway. A lot of people think Eurylochus was supposed to die there by holding one of the torches himself. Even if he wasn't though, him unknowingly choosing 6 men who will die is a punishment in itself. 6 torches for 6 men to be targeted by the 6 heads of Scylla. Odysseus absolutely knew what was going to happen. It was Scylla or Charybdis, Charybdis would have killed everyone. He chose the lesser of two evils in a sense. Also want to add a little about Scylla's story. So she is actually just a Nymph who was poisoned/cursed by Circe. If you go back to Suffering when the Sirens talk about Scylla you can hear Circe's theme in the background. The reason Circe cursed her is because a minor sea god Glaucus was in love with Scylla but Scylla didn't love him back. He went to Circe for a love potion, problem is Circe herself loved Glaucus so instead of a love potion she gave him a curse that turned Scylla into a monster...
Eury didn’t know they were going to the lair so probably a good time to bring it up when they though nothing bad was going to happen 😅 little did they know what information Odysseus was holding from the crew

Eury drops his torch to go help another crew member just for a different member to pick up Eury's torch. He figured out what was going on - used ''figured out'' because Odysseus didn't tell the crew that they were going to Scylla.

But rewatching it strikes me hard that back in "Luck Runs Out" he grabbed Eury aside and was like, "Look, you're my second in command. I cannot have you questioning me in front of our men. You must TRUST me or things will go bad." Then to find out it was Eury STILL didn't trust him when Ody said there was no treasure in the bag and opened it. So at the begining I took it as Ody trying to figure out how to do the payment to Scylla, find out his brother-in-law and second in command betrayed his trust, so the payment will be paid by Eury and the 5 other men that Eury chooses since it's likely those men were going to be the most detrimental to him getting home... and sure enough, as we know what happens next...

I think the idea is that Ody's response to Eurylocus's confession was Eurylocus was given the responsibility of choosing who died without realizing it and he was originally holding one of the torches himself so he would have died if the torch hadn't ended up in another's hands
Odysseus placing the burden of choosing the sacrificial victims on Eurylochus (without him realizing what he is doing) is truly merciless

To add in some context from Greek Mythology: in the original Odyssey, Odysseus must navigate 'the Strait of Messina' which contained Charibdis on one side, and Scylla on the other. Charibdis was a danger that risked losing the entire ship, but *could* be passed safely. Scylla would never destroy the ship, but would always eat 6 crew memebers. So it was safer to sacrifice six men, than to risk losing everyone.
Personal belief: I think this was, essentially, an ancient greek "trolly problem" to demonstrate an ethical dilemma.
Fun half-fact: If I remember correctly, he actually did try navigating between them safely in the original, and ALMOST did, but one of the crew distracted him, which meant the ship drifted off the side, towards Scylla a bit, where she then snatched up 6 of their men. He didn't sacrifice them, that was just a touch added to Epic, for the sake of the storyline.
Maybe in ancient Greece, it was an Ithaca dilemma! :p

i like to imagine the lyrics sort of represent odysseus' realisation after Erury told him about the windbag. With the exeption of "You hide a reason for shame" that one just fits Eury way more than Ody.

Ody genuinely couldn't care less if Eury died, since now he knows that one of the main reasons he isn't home and he's suffered so much was one of his closest friends. Eurylochus is about to confess his secret and he also tried to do so before (in puppeteer) while Odysseus is actively hiding from his crew that 6 of them will not make it out of this cave alive, he's ashamed because he knows what he is planning to do.

I like that Eurylochus is kind of a red herring in the song. Scylla is singing about betrayal and breaking bonds while Eurylochus is confessing but I think she is singing about Odysseus, he is the only one who knows what they are getting into. Then they resonate at the end as they are both monsters just doing what needs to be done.

Also, I always interpreted Scylla's words in this song as a sort of "Welcome to the other side," moment, like she KNOWS what he just let her do. And in a way, I think she's impressed.
Scylla in Epic has some kinda of telepathic powers, that's why she's singing about hiding a reason to shame, and about they being the same. This fit both Eurylochus and Odysseus

5:56 My personal headcanon is that Odysseus already suspected Eurylochus. The public confrontation in "Luck Runs Out," the unsaid confession in "Puppeteer..." It makes sense. And the fact that Odysseus was the only one protecting the wind bag for nine days straight tells me "Luck Runs Out" had already created a significant rift in their relationship. Eurylochus is second in command. It's his job to carrying out the captain's order of keeping the bag closed. At best, the men would have had to go behind Eurylochus' back to open the bag. At worst... he sanctioned it. All Odysseus needed was confirmation.
"But scylla has a cost" he knew that traveling through her lair would require 6 sacrifices as a toll payment. If they hadn't given the sacrifices, or if they'd tried to fight her, it would've resulted in the ship being destroyed and more lives lost. And so he chose the lesser of two evils.
Odysseus may still want to get home with as many men as possible, but he knows now that it's not always possible to make sure they stay alive.
he could have avoided deaths and sacrifices if he had given up on the idea of returning to Ithaca, it's his personal obsession to see Penelope and Telemachus again that condemns the crew (it's clearly shown in _you-know-what-future-song_ )
No. No Scylla *always* takes six, if he didn't fight only six would die. The only thing the torches did was ensure that he wasn't any of the six, that's the point of the torches, so he would survive at the cost of any random six men, that's why Eurylochus was so mad in Mutiny

15:33 for this question on eurylochus opening the bag, it’s just as Aeilous the wind god said, keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Odysseus always trusted Eurylochus but it was never the same kind of feeling for him to Ody. Luck runs out he expressed his distrust in Odysseus’ plans and was shut down back then because he knew his place when confronted, but behind his own back, he never trusted him, and opened the bag without considering the risk, only the alleged “lies” his captain told.
Not sure if you remember, but Eurlyochus actually tried to tell Odysseus 'something that I must confess' back at the very beginning of the Circe saga. This was what he was trying to say, but Ody cut him off. So he's been holding this confession in since they got to Circe's island.

To add the context as for the reason Eury opened the bag, remember he's the voice of the crew, and the whole crew wanted the bag opened. So surely even if he didn't open it, someone else would, but since he's the bridge between the crew and Ody, he likely opened it so that random crewmembers wouldn't face Odysseus' wrath, as he'd be more lenient with Eury.
I love seeing how people react to the reveal of Scylla. How creepy she is, the looks on their faces when her neck extends and her other heads turn up. And the dawning horror when her face tips back, showing the jaws of the eel.

Worth noting that Odysseus is the only member of the crew who knows what Scylla is, and that she's ahead of them. He's also the only one who cane up with the idea to kill off six men as tribute.
Scylla is one of the songs with the best assortment of animatics imo. I love all the different ways people show Odysseus feeling betrayed and the different ways Scylla was drawn, my favorite Scylla design being from VirusAP's animatic.
I do think it's important to note that Scylla's words at the start of the song can apply to both Odysseus and Eurylochus.
Obviously, Eurylochus hid the fact that he opened the bag, breaking the bonds that he made (with Odysseus). However, Odysseus is hiding his plan to kill off six of the men, a plan that will break the bonds he has made with THEM.
Scylla was originally a beautiful nymph who was turned into a monster by Circe, yes Circe😂. Circe liked a sailor named Glaucus and made him into a god, then Glaucus ditched her for Scylla. So in a bid to reveal Scylla's 'true form', she turned her into a monster. And when Scylla sings 'we are the same, you and I' It refers to Odysseus becoming a monster just like she is.

Scyllas true firm is even more nightmarish. She is described as being a human body with six legs that have a head at the end of them , between each leg is a dogs head.
Eury didn't knew the went into scylla lair, only odisseus knew that because he readed the sirens lips.
I think other people have mentioned this but just in case, the reason the crew weren't prepared or ready for scylla was bcs in suffering odysseus was the only one who read the sirens lips, the other crew mates were only following they're captain
A majorly important note here is the entire fact that they're even having to go through Scylla's lair is Eurylochus's fault.
He wanted to tell Ody about the wind bag back since Circe's island, which is why he eventually brings it up here, but in that exact moment, what he basically says to Odysseus is 'I'm the reason you just lost most of your crew and have had to detour to this place where you're going to lose even more crew.'
Because they were almost home to Ithaca before Eurylochus opened the wind bag. He is the direct reason that they ended up losing most of their fleet to Poseidon, getting blown to Circe's island, going through the underworld, and now having to sacrifice 6 more men to Scylla to try and avoid Poseidon, when they could have been home by now.
Yeah. There's a reason Odysseus just kinda shuts down and closes off emotionally, because the other option is to scream. He tells Eurylochus to light up six torches because the only thing he can think to do is what needs to be done, because yelling at his second in command in that moment wouldn't help anything.
I swear, Odysseus is so much better than me. The RAGE I felt and would have felt towards Eurylochus when I found out that he opened the bag when they were basically on Ithaca's doorstep and he decided to open the bag at that moment in time!!!
Scylla's story is quite sad actually, she used to be a Nymph, the most beautiful, and a man was in love with her, Glaucos.
However, Circe was in love with Glaucos. Jealous of Scylla, Circe poisonned the water where she usually bathed. When she went in, dogs sprang from he thighs and she was made a monster. She was later slayed by Heracles, as was most monsters lol. She isn't evil, she just does what she needs to survive. So either you try fighting Charibdis (the whirlpool monster next to Scylla's strait), which would usually mean death for everyone on the ship, or pay Scylla's toll of 6 men, otherwise she'd eat the whole crew.
Odysseus responds to Eury’s confession by basically deciding right then and there to sacrifice him to Scylla. Ody knew ahead of time the only way to get through her lair was to give up six men. This song really establishes that Ody has become the monster he said he was going to be, especially the end when his voice joins with Scylla’s to say “we are the same, you and I”.
Oh, the full circle this goes...
ok, so, obviously the recall is from Monster, but I'd argue it is a *different* monster that the one we believe will need to become from the song.

While not lore accurate version of Scylla, I love Gigi's depiction none-the-less. Biggest part is the dichotomy of the gore of her devouring the men that were marked with the torches while she dances around the ship. There is a horrific beauty to her that is both memorizing and terrifying,
A couple "fun" facts:
Scylla has a price, and Odysseus knows this. When he tells Eurylochus to light up six torches, the men carrying the torches have been unknowingly been chosen as the sacrifices to pay said price. But also notice that Odysseus had Eurylochus hold one of the torches.
Also, Scylla was once a nymph but is now a monster because Circe cursed her with one of her potions because Scylla had garnished the affections of Glaucus, a demigod that Circe was in love with.
So...Odysseus was the only one aware of who they were facing. Her lyrics are a direct message to him. They just happen to coincide with Eury confessing and also are a bit of a mislead that she's talking about him. Odysseus stays quiet most of the song because he is going to do the exact same thing, that Eury did. In short, he can't get mad or he'd be a hypocrite.

This is why Odysseus joins Scylla's vocals at the ends. He's admitting she's right. And just to note, the torches were marked sacrifices, if they tried to fight or hide under cover of darkness, the whole ship WOULD HAVE been massacred.
Those 6 people she ate all appeared in this artist's rendition of 'Keep yours friends close'. All 6 eaten were those who opened the wind bag.

so in the book Ody had to choose to sail near Scylla, a cursed nymph who attacks ships and eats people with the 6 monster heads that grew from her thighs, or Charybdis, a monster who's maw opening caused whirlpools. Ody was advised to go nearer Scylla because she could only eat 6 men at once and they also could ask Scylla's mum to tell her not to back for seconds while Charybdis would eat the whole boat
Eurylocus actually tried to tell Ody about the wind bag at the start of the circe saga, but was told it could wait till later. It's just unfortunate that he had to get it off his chest here of all places.
To be fair Eurylocus doesn’t know that they are entering Scilla’s lair, they all had wax in their ears and just because Odysseus can read lips doesn’t mean everyone can. And he also tried to confess earlier on when they first landed on Circes island but Odysseus told him it could wait and to scout ahead. After that they were going to the underworld (definitely not the time). So it makes sense that he might bring it up now. As far as he knows they are finally facing calm waters (Poseidon doesn’t go here) and the sirens gave Odysseus hope that they could get home. So it might seem like the perfect time to have that conversation.
A bit late but I think the concept of “Eurylocus, light up six torches.” Was Odysseus’ way of dealing with him because not only is Eurylocus lighting up the torches for the sacrifices, one of those was meant for him.
Eurylochus tried to confess before (at Circe island) but was stopped by Odysseus. Also they do not know they are in Scylla's lair. Their ears were blocked with wax when the siren told Odysseus that. I think that Eurylochus thinks this is his last chance to fess up before they go home.

8:00 ah but the crew doesn't know that. Ody and we, the audience, learned about the lair of Scylla from the sirens during which they all had their ears plugged. Odysseus is the only one privvy to this information because he tricked the lead siren and read her lips.
This song is my favorite of the saga, because although we see dark and gory stuff throughout the Odyssey a lot, this could in fact be considered one of if not the most gruesome part of it all.
Eury did try to tell Ody before this moment, right before encountering Circe. But Ody brushes him off and has him explore the island.
The crew didn't hear the sirens talking about Scylla because they had their ears plugged.
Ody had two choices, go through the strait past Charybdis and risk losing the entire ship to the monster or Posiden, or go through Scylla's cave, and lose a few men guaranteed.
Only he knew that though, so when he asked for six torches to be lit, he was choosing the 6 men that would die, one for each of Scylla's heads.
In reality it would have been pitch black in the cave, so lighting torches isn't unusual. Its only when they start getting attacked does his right-hand man start to suspect Ody knew what was going on.
In the original story, Eurylochus realizes what's happening, and starts to throw torches overboard.

Odysseus didnt just let the secret slide, eurylicus had a torch originally. He was supposed to be one of the 6 that were sacrificed.
The worst part for Odysseus with the revelation of his friends betrayal is that literally the song right before, less then a week in world, he told his friend he needed him to trust him and to be on his side. and his friend agreed. Odysseus was realizing his friend hadn't even waited a week before going back on his promise and betraying him for potential treasure. Also a thing about Odysseus not responding, but Scylla singing about betrayal, is that a theme with this song is that Scylla and Odysseus are one and the same, both monsters doing what they see as necessary to survive, her singing was effectively his response, what he was thinking at the time.

Also, only Ody knew about where they were going. Only he learned that from the siren and didn't tell the others.
So they had no idea that the six torches were basically making them targets for Scyllas six heads and feeding the heads is the price they need to pay to get through.
So Ody telling Eury to light up the torches, counting on that he would keep one for himself, was his indirect response to the news about the windbag. He knew that those holding the torches would die, it was just sheee dumb luck that Eury traded off his torch in the middle of the chaos and survived.
And Scylla is basically telling Ody they are the same, forced to be monsters because of the gods. Circe, daugther of Helios, cursed Scylla to be the monster she is out of jealousy. The gods keep pushing at Ody and putting him through shit and forcing him to become a ruthless monster in order to get home. So she sees them as kindred spirits pretty much.

Ody was trying to take care of the problem with Eury by having him light the torches, expecting him to keep one, and didn't account for him handing it off to help others. Scylla is the way she is because of Circe (THAT is a long story).

Backstory of Scylla (Or one of them at least):
Circe had fallen in love with a sea god named, Glaucus but he preferred Scylla to her, who at the time was a beautiful young lady. Circe was jealous and did something extremely petty, (in my opinion at least). She poisoned the water where Scylla frequently bathed, so when Scylla got in one day she transformed into a six-headed beast who ate six crew members of any ship in order to let them pass through her lair. (Hence the six torches Ody asks Eurylochus to light up)
Also I would like to point out that Ody doesn't tell him to hand out the torches. Eurylochus is the one that takes it upon himself to hand them out....he took that power into his own hands just a foreshadowing for the next song

Oddy is the only one who reads the Siren's lips and never tells the crew that they are going to Scylla's lair (in "The Odyssey" he did). They didn't know that he was literally going to his death.

If you go back to the animatic Gigi did for Keep Your Friends Closer, Eurylocus wasn't one of the men Odysseus spoke to when he came back with the wind bag (but the large man with only one eye - who was the last Scylla took - was). The rumour about the bag containing treasure obviously did spread round the crew - and in the Odyssey story, the ships were in sight of the Ithica coast when they were all blown back out to sea. Eurylocus telling Odysseus in this moment that it was him that opened the bag meant it was his fault that they ended up travelling so much longer and further to get back.
Also, Scylla singing that she and Odysseus are the same deep down is her saying "we both are seen as monsters, but we are only doing this because we have to survive - it isn't who we really are" - she was originally a nymph transformed by Circe's magic but now has to feed herself to live by eating passing sailors on ships.
In all honesty, Scylla doesn’t get people to confess their secrets. She’s not talking to Eurylochus, she’s talking to Odysseus. Scylla was able to delve into his mind and find out his plan: sacrificing six men for each of her heads in exchange of the lives of the rest.
Scylla, now knowing this information that he’s ashamed of doing no matter how necessary it may be, is telling him that they must do what they have to do in order of survival; that’s what makes them truly monsters.
Odysseus still clung onto some of his humanity, and she’s telling him to leave it behind just like she did because she actually doesn’t enjoy killing the people who go through her lair, but it’s something she has to do because she needs to feed herself. That’s why she says that him and her are the same- doing what they must do, becoming the monsters, to survive.
Ngl, I just wanna give Scylla a hug but I am not sure if I want to sacrifice 6 people for that

The interesting thing, is that if Odysseus allowed Eurylochous to tell him this back in puppeteer, this betrayed feeling Scylla is talking about likely would never have happened.
The 6 torches was a response to the bag, or part of it anyway. A lot of people think Eurylochus was supposed to die there by holding one of the torches himself. Even if he wasn't though, him unknowingly choosing 6 men who will die is a punishment in itself. 6 torches for 6 men to be targeted by the 6 heads of Scylla. Odysseus absolutely knew what was going to happen. It was Scylla or Charybdis, Charybdis would have killed everyone. He chose the lesser of two evils in a sense.
Also want to add a little about Scylla's story. So she is actually just a Nymph who was poisoned/cursed by Circe. If you go back to Suffering when the Sirens talk about Scylla you can hear Circe's theme in the background. The reason Circe cursed her is because a minor sea god Glaucus was in love with Scylla but Scylla didn't love him back. He went to Circe for a love potion, problem is Circe herself loved Glaucus so instead of a love potion she gave him a curse that turned Scylla into a monster...

Eury didn’t know they were going to the lair so probably a good time to bring it up when they though nothing bad was going to happen 😅 little did they know what information Odysseus was holding from the crew

at first eurylochus had a fire torch so odysseus wanted him to die after he told him he opened the bag in this animatic. I really think this animatic is accurate in that extent
