Btw as disturbing as the lyrics to this song are, the voice actor did such a great job. the poor guy was so scared that he would've gotten backlash for singing the song, but he did an excellent job and his voice is amazingg
I love how basically everyone's reaction to Hold Them Down is "I will personally oversee Antinous rotting in hell, but dear god did Ayron Alexander *SLAY* with those vocals".
This, in my opinion, ranks up there with the greatest villain songs of all time. Easily stands as a peer of Be Prepared, Hellfire, and Gaston/Mob Song.
Real. The first time I heard the song, my face couldn't stop switching from disgust to giddy because it couldn't tell if I wanted to listen to the plot or the voice
one thing i noticed. in the previous song, the line was "Whoever can string my husbands old bow" while here it's "Whoever can string the old kings bow" Penelope still sees it as the bow belonging to Odysseus, while the Suitors are already treating him as the ex king
I love this animatic. About that person at the end- who ever can string my husbands old bow. I'm enjoying a little to much that you didn't realise who that was.
Ok, something I just noticed, at 13:58, you can see the scar that the boar gave him during his fight with it. In the original story, he gets recognized while in disguise by one of his house maids via this scar
@@supershinigami1 I didn't even need headphones. Read a comment about that, went back to the beginning, and heard him easily. Jorge is good, but I don't think he's very good at disguising his voice. That shit pops out at ya too damn easily once you know it's there.😂
You know its a rule for musicals. The Villain Song needs to be enchanting and somehow make you like the song but hate the person. All the Charm and confusion of "but why do I"
@@leonglitch We DO know because it's literally his voice and because Jorge said on a short that it was a cute tell for people that both knew the original song and that were perceptive enough, cuz both in EPIC and in the original, Oddyseus was already there hearing Antinous and the suitors
@mrbigotes9974 First, Jorge never made a short on that. You made that up. Second, How do you know it's his voice. It's not exactly clear or anything. Also that doesn't make it Odysseus. Jorge has been just part of the ensemble before. Also why would Odysseus start singing alongside the suitors while hiding their weapons and stringing the bow? Odysseus doesn't have a disguise in EPIC so he would just be revealing himself and I find it hard to believe that the sharpest of kings would do that.
clue in the animatic, nobody can sting the bow, so the only one is the "old king" , a figure apears sting the bow and shoot throug the axes , and as penelope said only her husband can do that, so...
One thing that's really cool about this animatic is that before Ody shoots Antinous you can see the scar on Ody's leg that he got fighting Athena's magic boar. In the original Odyssey, when he disguises himself as a beggar, one of the maids who's known Ody since he was a young boy saw the scar and was able to immediately identify him cuz of it. She along with members of the palace staff that were loyal to Penelope and Odysseus are the ones who initially helped him lock the suitors in the palace and hide their weapons before Odysseus goes on his rampage.
The bit you suspected for the danger motif is played by a viola, Penelope's instrument, and if you listen for the notes and melody it's playing, I think it matches one of Odysseus' big NOs...
Oh I wonder who the rugged looking scarred guy who just strung the old king's bow and shot Antinous as he completed the impossible challenge, could be? 😂 Who's to say! He was color coded completely different from the suitors, looked middle-aged and was pretty good with that bow no one could use, huh 🤔 I'm teasing you Jen, you missing what happened in the end was just funny xD
I was about to flip at the end I was literally screaming through the screen “TS ODYSSEUS ITS ODYSSEUS WHAT DO U MEAN COME ON!!!” When she said Surely it’s not Odysseus surely not!
This is beautiful in the way that it is so musically upsetting. Think about what we would know is Penelope's instrument. Listen to the section again when he starts with "Hold Her Down" (if you can, which it is understandably upsetting). You hear hear Penelope's instrument (viola) underneath....like it's wailing/crying. This is by far the most uncomfortable song I've ever heard and I'm obsessed with it's construction and execution. This is definitely top tier villain song for sure~
13:39 kind of loses the shock factor and intrigue with this animatic (I love it still not saying it's bad, the artist just chose a different way to show the events), but in the og animatics used for the official livestream, odysseus wasn't seen among the suitors. Instead you could hear jorge in the background singing with the suitors, and also in The Challenge, which means Odysseus was there with the suitors the whole time blending in the background, so odysseus shooting antinous was pretty much a jumpscare. But odysseus has always been hiding among the suitors, even in the original. It also means he was singing "Hold them down" with a whole different meaning :)
One thing to take into account is that this artist tends to add a lot of the factors from the original tale into this. She includes things like his scar on his leg which tells you who he is and she includes things from the murals that shows us the events from the book as well. So in the original he does sit among the rest of the suitors and he hears everything that they're doing and he's the one who actually finishes the challenge. So it's a nice balance of both and I personally like the original a little bit more than the new version since it does give you an idea of what's really going on. And closes up some of the holes that the actual musical still has.
I'd like to note there is a more subtle musical reference that demonstrates Ody was closer than he ever realized to being as bad as Antinous- the melody of "Where in the hell is our pride and our rage," and one repetition of "Channel the fire inside of your soul" is the same as Ody's line "I am not letting you get in my way!" when he's about to kill Eury in Mutiny. An entirely different kind of monster might have come home...
God I love Jen's reactions. Don't worry Jen the next three will definitely lighten up your mood (Lighten is debatable so No promises on the first but the last two definitely will)
A lot of people have theorized that the viola (Penelope's instrument) in the background symbolizes that she was actually listening in on their plan. just like how if you really pay attention to the last line of the song you can faintly hear Odysseus singing along, this could easily tie in with his needed revenge against the suitors. Odysseus, Penelope and even telemachus are merely background motifs to the bigger picture and it stays like that for one whole song while Odysseus slowly bleeds through the background plot and back to the role of main character. Easily symbolizing his rise back to power as the rightful king of ithica.
I watched Luna's stuff for the first time the other day and was blown away. Like okay dang just crop out of nowhere like that and drop three master pieces
A little comparison between The Challenge and Hold Them Down "Whoever can string *my husbands* old bow...." ~ Penelope "Whoever can string *the old kings* bow...." ~ Suitors
I'm so glad you chose this animatic! My husband and I love this animator. But I do highly recommend watching the livestream animatics at some point ❤ they are beautiful and also possibly even darker 😅
Love the eye-roll at "breaking her bedroom door". The way he sings 'diplomatic mission' like he doesn't believe that's a real thing should clue you in that however clever and charismatic Antinous is, he's really a very simple creature. You'd think he would be preoccupied with thoughts about divvying up the kingdom, or using the other suiters to secure a larger slice for himself and his dynasty. But no, there's a milf to be violated first.
I would advise everyone to listen to this song with headphones on. You can hear Odys voice growing louder and louder as if he's inching closer to kill Antinous.
