- In this video I bring you along as I have a look at a customers 2010 Honda Odyssey that has an issue with the power tailgate. It won't open with the handle or with any of the buttons. He replaced the latch and the module and now we have to see what is really wrong with it. -Enjoy!

Eric, dont tease us by saying, "Let me get the lovely Mrs O" and then say no, I can do it with the scan tool. We want Mrs O, not the scan tool! Seriously, we love the banter between you two. You yell and curse at your tools but they dont talk back.
I love how you methodically go thru all the steps to track down a problem and then repair it. Will you ever get a SMA hat in your merch and possibly a SMA license plate?
The SMA license plate is a video production tool so he doesn't reveal the customer's license plate. Having a plate would be cool though.
He might forget to take offa sma plate someday and it will show up on Ebay. I would think the customer would return it because it is a honor to have Eric O to work on your vehicle.
An SMA hat would be nice, I'd get one !!!!
I have said this before but your not a mechanic, your a genius disguised as a mechanic. You fix electrical, physical and engine stuff way beyond the pervue of a mechanic, it's great to see your work and the thinking process. Good to see interaction with Mrs O as well. A kind guy you are.

I also don't think anyone blames you for having a premature money shot with that connector when Mrs. O walks in.

@@lordjaashin Yea ,he should hide her in a closet so guys won't look at her or compliment her . I'm sure that if she is reluctant to go before the camera it's for much worse comments or generally being uncomfortable in front of a camera as many people are.

Great advice Eric! I see so many folks get fooled by their meter. And voltage does not mean amperage. Sometimes a test light is your best friend. Well, and your finger with the meter, but only if you lick it first! Have a great day, Mr and Mrs O! o7
Seen that many times with batteries. Yes, it may show plenty of voltage, but that doesn’t mean it has the amp capacity needed to crank over an engine. Don’t be fooled…..

Or use an old analog VOM as they require current to make the meter move.

Agreed. I imagine the 0.5% of energy he saved not having to lift the tailgate was quickly negated by the cash he had to fire out of the parts cannon. I'll never truly understand why people feel they need these extras. See also : 2/4wd with no intention of ever using the 4wd.
@@PJBonoVox I see a lot of single moms (not only targeting them) that have 2 kids running around while holding a bunch of groceries and trying to open a tail gate. In this case it is nice to have such feature to get close to the car and have it open by itself. It may not be a necessity for us but some others yes.
A family members 7.3 power stroke has rotten main powers and grounds, I've told him over and over
just because wires can carry voltage that doesn't mean they can carry amperage. His journeyman mechanic
son says different, I should tell them both to watch SMA. Because they think im a bonehead. Once again great vid.

The money shot for me was the voltage drop with your finger ground. The wire breaking on camera is something you like. Another money shot would have been Mrs. O. lol
You know it is a bad wire from the beginning. The suspense is building. Then Mrs. O. walks in and says one word . Then BAM premature money shot. Great video as always.
Good trick using your fingers to pull the voltage down, not lighting the bulb is OLD school, good work!

You seem like a pretty humble guy and I think it's great that you find out what the problem is instead of just throwing parts at the problem is. Would be great to meet y'all some day and indeed buy you some coffee and doughnuts. I watch from Scotland, but love the us and have family over there and also have visited a number of times. You are the wiring problem solver! The ones with the works but won't carry current are the worst.
Great example of a high impedance “open” circuit. Several meters now have a “Low Z” (low impedance) setting which does the same test as you did with your hand. The hand test is a less expensive alternative! 😉 Great work! Thanks for the video!

I bought some heat shrink and solder butt connections on Amazon and I have found them to be easy to use in tight spaces. Both stripped ends of the wire go to the middle of the butt connector you shrink the ends then a lighter or heat gun will melt the solder. No crimpers required.
This was a good lesson in ghost voltage issues. Good fix too. I would have done the same thing.
The mini-lesson on not always trusting a meter hit close to home this week. Customer states no 3rd brake light. I pull the bulb and check for voltage at the contacts with my meter and see battery voltage. Then I loaded a new bulb in the parts cannon and it still doesn't work. Then I back-probe the connector with my meter and plug the bulb back in and my voltage drops to 0. Long story short, the bulb was fine and I found a wiring issue was the real culprit.
Yeah need to keep in mind how much current a multimeter draws, which is the square root of fuck all. That's why the scope on a rope is so handy! I used to laugh about my grandad using a lamp with a needle and croc clip, telling him he needed a multimeter. I think he knew much more than I ever will.

I remember many moons ago , when I was a young “ hot dog “ mechanic , I went to my buddy’s shop & saw a grey haired old man with thick glasses on working on a “can of worms” wiring harness talking to himself out load ! I asked, who’s the old fart over there in the corner talking to himself ? He’s one of the best wiring guys in the City! I asked his name , when he told me! , I heard of him many times,, he is real good,, I thought he died ! Go meet him! Yes Sir !!

@@daleburrell6273 an AVO moving coil meter can sometimes draw quite a bit of current, that's sometimes why the old boys prefer them.

Thanks for banging home the phantom voltage thing repeatedly, I was working on a simple tail light problem the other day and almost got bit by it, but your voice in my head saved me. I think one of my field techs got bit by it the same day but the forensic report is so far missing. Bonus points for the @$54013 putting a burned out bulb in a new bulb package I had, I suspect it was the same tech.
Ya ditched the bibs but still the best diagnostics on you tube! Long time watcher short time retiree.

Brad, I’m on a smoke break in my garage, so let me help you understand, if you don’t mind. Change the context a bit,,,,, you have a small import car with a good battery. Your dad has a Duramax pick up with a set of dead batteries. Your car is 12 volts, so is your dad’s . You have a $10.00 set of booster cables. You hook up, dad turns the key, puff, cables burn! Not voltage,,,,,, Amp draw ! Eric jumped the hatch motor , boom, worked . Under dash fuse,, good,, 12v. Go to module , 12v ? Trunk latch motor needs +/- 6-9 amps to operate ! Eric’s tailite bulb needs 12v but needs +/- 1.5 amps to light,, no light up ? Bad wire or connector! Hunt & seek! The rest is Elimentory My Dear Watson ! Hope that helps.

I personally like using a incandescent truck headlight to do voltage drop test, for larger truck trailer light cords etc, I see SO many techs get completely Stomped from not knowing how to properly do voltage drop test like you constantly do 😎👍..
Exactly why you need a meter, and a test light. This has got me before, I used a meter have voltage replaced back up alarm, didn't work, when I used my test light would not light up test light. I found a wire partly broken would alow current, but not enough voltage to light up light
Get a newer low amp/ volt test light ! They work every time !

I think I would have put an insulated male & female spade connector on in case the connector ever needed seperating for some reason, but thats nitpicking. Certainly a great diagnosis, shows how following a wiring diagram is a great strategy.
I think the only thing that is going to separate that connector is corrosion. The whole piece is finished.
Those spade connectors aren't waterproof, if the water intrusion is still happening that would be likely to corrode as well..

As you said Eric this getting old stuff sucks trying to see the paper you had in the back. I’m not sure your age but when it starts it’s called 40 itus sometimes begins late 40’s or later when it does it gets bad enough for cheater glasses. Pain in the but to work in the kinda places you do. I had many tight places to work in even when the glasses are on.

Eric Fantastic job in Diagnosing the problem. Seems like evey DIY will shoot the parts Cannon before Diagnosing the problem correctly.
Nice job as usual. I don't know why your shop is not the first choice for more folks in your area. As you said, you seem to be the last resort for many. Should charge a higher diagnostic charge if others have tried but failed before you.

No real comments other than Im always interested in how you track down the culprit. And in helping the algoritms.
Good advice and troubleshooting about checking a circuit under load. Although using one's body is not advised. Especially taking that current right across the chest. Even I as an electronics tech can be fooled by that one. Usually we see power supplies that wont take a load. But, in the end your deductions are correct. One other thing, That connector is probably just for assembly purposes. I would have opened it up and inspected it and yes may be spliced the whole cable since the car will not be assembled again and is thus not necessary.
Question, how can you take "current across your chest" with a 12 volt car battery. Serious question.... Please don't answer it applying logic that pertains to 100/220 volt AC circuits or 400 volt DC circuits. I was applying the application here with the 12 volt DC circuit.
@@SouthMainAuto Point taken. It is only 12V . But, still as an electronic tech I would avoid becoming part of any circuit. It's just safety habits. Like never pointing a gun at anyone even if it is unloaded.
Yeah I totally get it. I never point an unloaded gun at anyone either 👍. I guess when it comes to working with electricity, I take for granted that my thought process includes what circuit is it? What have we proven so far? How many volts and amps can the circuit possibly carry? Then I proceed with my testing. The practice of never making yourself part of a circuit works just as well too 😎 especially when it comes to secondary ignition 😂

I work in the power industry and have saw a few folk caught out with using a meter instead of the loaded test lamps and missing the high impedance fault on the incoming supply.Great work and explanation.

A solenoid electrical meter was my go to tool for troubleshooting. A digital volt meter has it's uses. Many a high end meter user are perplexed why they can't find the problem.
The so called cheat that was utilized. Placing a finger on the probe tip is a great lesson. Hope they paid attention to that Mr.O.

That bit where you used your body to see if the circuit could flow current was really helpful. I bet in most cases, the module would have been mistakenly replaced.
Always use a test light to test load circuitry. I do this all the time and if I cant reach the battery. I use another battery and set up a series.
Eric, on my 2013 Chevy captiva, the wiring harness connection at the top of the hatch door was melted and caused my hatch to not open........once i figured out connectors were bad, replaced and worked fine.

Eric, I’ll be on the lookout for "Green snot" in my wiring. The money shot we saw was fine. We know you try to get it for us. We should try and get our “animals” together for a shake the coke bottle spray fight. Oddly enough, black coffee also gets sticky for some reason. Glad my daughters Honda Pilot has hinged doors instead of the slidders. Those audio only cameo’s of Mrs. O are just barely good enough. We need the Beauty shots…haha!
Great troubleshooting. Electrical can get you. I notice moisture in the spare tire area of my 06 Oddy. Sealed the channel on top but never thought about the door cable area letting water in. Thanks.
