A friend went to a shop for remote start. Shop has been in the neighborhood for many years. Good reviews. They mounted something under the dashboard and drilled through the firewall into the engine compartment. Found out later on the way home after having no brakes coming up to a red light they drilled a hole in the power booster for the brakes.
Yep, it moves ever so slightly, but unfortunately Eric was the other side of the column so wouldnt have been able to see it move, he got there in the end though!

I was always maddened by every install I ever saw. But also thanked them because I fixed so many I can't even remember how many times. It was good fast money and I never had a come back from my repairs. Also no cheap remote starts should be left in an auto because they always end up DOA some where. They are not passive and interrupt the ignition power and start signal cicuits.
I've had all my remote starters installed at a reputable shop. They do audio systems, remote starts, and alarms. Nothing else. Never had an issue. The work is always neat and done very well. Meanwhile every family member that has purchased a used vehicle that came with an alarm/remote start has been a problematic hack job.
@@luvdady Some modern cars make it way simpler if you get the right kit. It’ll basically be plug and play without needing to splice into anything. But, that often requires a more expensive kit and it won’t be universal so a lot of places don’t bother with them.
Good Catch Eric!! Dealerships generally won't spend time on stuff like that. That's why you are a Top Diag/Mechanic!! You spend the time NEEDED to address, solve and repair the issue professionally!!
Dude. I train people to troubleshoot networks for a living and I WISH I could somehow impart your powers of logic and observation to some of my students. Excellent job, excellent video. Thanks!!
tracking down an intermittent fault is always a burden....you did well....i always become impatient and frustrated after about 10 minutes but that's why expert professionals like yourself are out there......being persistent, exhaustively complete, and methodical is the only way
Yep, I recently had a 09 Ford, that didnt want to start, and would shut off on me. The PCM relay was going bad. it was a very weird, slowly degrading failure. And when the PCM powered off, it threw the code for Passive Security. But that was false. Swapped a known good relay and all the issues vanished. Bought all new relays for it. And sold her off.
Had a VW Rabbit in the 70's. About every 25k miles it would shut off for no reason. Was on the 3rd ignition switch when I figured out that the cause was an overweight key ring. The weight of the key ring kept pressure on the switch trying to turn off the ignition. Took keys off the ring - no more problems.
@@donhomberg6724 if it only happened every 25k miles, I wouldn’t even consider it a fault! I don’t drive much these days so I’d cover 25k in about 10 years 😂
Eric O, your persistence combined with your education, training and experience found the problem. There’s your problem lady. Good job. I enjoyed the journey with you. Learned a lot. Thank you. ?
Awesome diagnosis and fix,Eric. Asking a dealership to fix this problem would have cost hundreds of dollars and wasted time with no solution. Your persistence and work ethic are unparalleled !👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Had an aftermarket remote start installed in my Kia Rio. Did my homework and made sure to choose a reputable shop. They installed and we started having electrical issues. I took it back to the shop, they read the codes which indicated it needed a new fuel pump. Fuel pump was an expensive fix as the tank had to be dropped. Took it back to the show that installed the remote start several times, they finally gave it to their top guy and he found a broken wire from their install. Told me this never happens. Whole thing was a giant pain and I will never have an aftermarket remote start added again. Good advice Eric. Thow it in the trash and save yourself a headache. I cross my fingers every day that something does not go wrong with the remote start.
Back when you were a Young pup, my wife purchased a used Ford Bronco II . It had an after market car stereo, after market car alarm, after market CB radio and tons of electrical issues. We got a good deal on it because of the electrical issues and we took a chance thinking the dealer was to stupid to take the after market stuff out to solve the issues. I spent a Saturday afternoon taking all the extra crap out and fixing the wires. That little beast ended up being a solid daily driver and we never had a single issue with it.
Eric, Don't concern yourself with others. What they think at times doesn't matter. YOU do good work and YOU only need to only worry about what you think we should know, which in my opinion is nothing. It's personal and it should remain that way. Should YOU feel the need to share anything with your fans that's your choice. I hope your dental procedure progresses and ends in success. I'm sorry that some feel that just because they subscribe to your channel that entitles them to your personal info. It DOES NOT. People, respect this man's privacy. Just that simple. Ron
It’s hard to find an honest mechanic. You sir are one in a million. I have a gentleman here in southern Idaho that owns a tire shop and does mechanic work to. I took my frontier in for brakes and he called and told me that they still had 5 mm on the pads. He knows how much I drive and told me I’m good for another year but the fluid was crappy. Did a fluid flush and saved me 400.00. He reminds me of you.. thanks for the great videos.
Get a remote starter. You'll LOVE it. I haven't had any issue like this and I've had 3 vehicles now with them. I have the one that uses a cell signal and has app on phone so you don't have to worry about how far away you are or not knowing if it started. Definitely worth the money if you live in the north east.
My little Ford Ranger. With AC on, every time I’d move the shift column it would blow the AC fuse. During the Summer when it would just be on all the time, start the truck and it would be on then put it in heat and pop, the fuse would blow. Trained myself to turn it of before turning off truck after if replace it while running. Anyway. Found out it’s a fairly common problem with these trucks. UA-cam backyard mechanic somehow in a miraculous way figured it out. Apparently the AC shared a fuse with reverse or reverse lights. Inside the clamshell cover there is a zip tie that holds the wires secured to the column that wears a very very small bit of the insulation away and it contacts the metal and shorts it out. Cut the zip tie and only done at night when it’s dark and a flashlight. You can see the tiniest of a shiner. Placed black tape, leave the zip tie off and good for the last five plus years. Luckily that guy did all the probing from both reverse lights in rear taillights forward to the cab and discovered this. Still amazed he discovered this minute issue. I hope to die before I need to replace my little 02’ Ranger. My chances are good if it last another 10-15 years.
I've been the dash guy in just about every dealership I ever worked at. Heater/ac controls, blower door motors, etc. I refused to "fix" aftermarket ad on wiring. I'm with you Eric, I just removed it and put the wiring back to factory. I've seen horror in the wiring just somebody installing a stupid radio.
At least with aftermarket radios you can get adapter plugs to plug into the factory connections, so that the only shitty wiring possible is between that and the stereo itself. Of course, that didn't stop tons of master youtube technicians cutting factory plugs off and wire nutting everything xD
@@ice44567 Yep. When I replaced the Alpine aftermarket head unit, it, and the one I put in (has BT, USB connections, as well as the 3.5mm jack that I almost never use), the factory radio harness was kept intact and a wiring harness connector was used and as long as that's been done, and pushed in solidly, it'll be fine, the radio will act as if factry, when in fact, it's an aftermarket unit. Mind you, my car is a 2003 Mazda Protege 5 wagon and the JVC unit I put in is from 2012.
Despite my irrelevant dental comment, I'm liking the way you carefully follow the fault here. An ex boss of mine said to me, never jump in boots and all, you'll scare the fault away!
I give you lots of credit ,amazing you laying there on seat floor of car for as long as you do. My back would be killing me .Not sure if folks don't understand position of the body mechanics get into to work on cars ,plus certain body strength it takes and all the knuckle busting .
Exactly I understand it all to well my friend, mechanic of 30+ years here. Im 49 with three herniated disc’s in my lumbar spine and screaming sciatic nerve pain. Twisting under dashboards is a big no no lol.
I'll second (or third) that! It can be downright painful! I recently installed a dash cam in my wife's car, and had to access the fuse box (2020 RAV4). Wouldn't you know it, it's right above where the clutch pedal should have been, and facing downwards! After switching to reading glasses, as progressives don't work at that angle, I suddenly had a regret - some years ago I got rid of my weight lifting set (getting a bit too old now, 67), and that back bench for presses would have been the perfect height for this job!! Question now is, do I buy a bench for the next car, or do I take it to the stealership to install? Hmmmm .... answered my own question there!!
I see that this was a year ago yet it was so enjoyable to watch thankyou Eric O! Dont know what you're talking about concerning "speaking" you sound fine!
I have encountered similar problems ,yes I get called when other fail ,then its 99% of the time what did someone else mess with and trace it back . Most of the time it takes more time to find out what someone else messed with to get to the problem .Good job ,I call it wiring forensics
Im an A Tech at a major tire and service provider. When i get a car that needs dash work or starting issues that has a remote starter or aftermarket alarm, i always try to get the customer to let me remove it. Id have to say that most of the time, i get the "go-ahead" to get rid of it and the car and customer are much better off for it. Those systems are so dang cheap and usually installed very poorly. Keep up the good work, Eric.
I work for a Toyota dealership in Southern California. 25:43 interesting enough I had the same issue along with a few other problems but when I turned my wipers on, I would get the same response the engine would die. It ended up being a poor body ground. The grounds that attached to the left front fender underneath the fender skirt. I actually ended up, grounding them to the sub frame. It had some bodywork done on the left front fender. And because of the paint it was not making good contact through that ground. Something to look at.
As always you knocked this out of the park with logic and common sense... a very rare commodity in this world. I purchased two vehicles that had "factory" remote starts... both wound up in the garbage when I got home from picking said vehicles up from the dealer. I pray the spacer will be short lived they can seriously rip up your tongue, even as your speech continues to get better with every video. Much love n prayers from upstate PRNY🙏💜
On mopars 2001-2007 vintage, the multifunction stalk can cause this kinda fun. Wonders of canbus and running everything on mux sense wires through the bcm.
After rewatching some of the footage, you can actually see the female part of that connector moving ever so slightly separately from the male end as you wiggled the wires. Great fix Mr. O.
Had auto start installed in my wife's car. I would have preferred to install it my self but the system is not really available unless your a dealer for them. I did take it all apart once it was home to make sure it was not crap. The installer didn't cut anything instead they have plug in bypass cables that was then wired to the AutoStart box. so to remove all I have to do is chase down the connections remove their harness from the connectors then plug back in the factory harness. They did add hood switch as the remote start also acts as an alarm.
Mr. O, @ around 16:00, you can see the connector, and it looks like the male part is not flush with the female. After you have a solid connection, it appears the male is flush with the female.
Well, I bet that new electrical tape was mighty expensive😂 But yes, I it is clearly visible earlier in the video that the connector was not properly seated. Good job eventually finding the problem and taking us along!!
I had an aftermarket remote start on my 2000 Durango when i bought it from the previous owner... I called it Herby... I ripped that crap out... it use to start the truck randomly when I'd be sitting around at home or at the store etc... it was absolutely insane. I once woke up to it running, I honestly had no idea how long it was running...
Reminds me of the early nineties in Australia, insurance companies were big on immobilizers being fitted and every man and his dog were fitting them. It was scotch lock city and nothing but trouble.
Yep, I remember getting one fitted to my Daewoo by the old Strathfield Car Audio.... Ended up stuck on the side of the road and was so easy to bypass I ended up not having to walk.
I totally agree with you on non-factory remote starters. Owned two vehicles with them for my daughters. Nothing but stress. Ripped them out and will never use nor advocate the use of them. Thank you!
we wouldnt of done that though. we would of just unplugged everything and tested it first then plugged in everything one by one until we could get it to reboot like that.
I had the same exact problem with my FJ Cruiser about a week ago! I was going crazy trying to track down this phantom electrical problem. The only issue was a partially plugged ignition connector. Love your videos!
I recently picked up a 2015 Kia Soul that has a compustar remote start thing installed in it. Total vehicle parasitic draw was something like .060 amps while I would check it. It would kill the battery in about 3 days. I pulled the fuse for the remote start and the parasitic draw moved the decimal to the left to .006 amps! Now it can at least sit for weeks with no issue. I think it was intermittently drawing more than .060 amps to kill the battery in 3 days. Aftermarket stuff struck again.
YOU SPEAK FINE, I CAN UNDERSTAND YOU PERFECTLY. ACTUALLY I NEVER EVEN NOTICED YOUR SPEECH UNTIL YOU MENTIONED IT. THE HELL WITH REMOTE STARTERS, THEY MAKE A MESS OF THINGS, ALL WE NEED IS MORE CRAP IN A VEHICLE TO WORK AROUND.
We had a aftermarket starter in the wife's 2013 Odyssey. Would randomly open the side doors, back hatch. Which is pretty handy when you get up in the morning, it's - 30 and the snow is blowing in the side door.
21years of Honda assembly line experience and I can remember the millions of issues that derived from soft set couplers We had assembly quality checks on line for just such issues YOU SOUND FINE !
I zoomed into the video and I can see that connector move each time it wigged out. When you pulled it towards you it was fine but when the connector was pushed away it tripped.
It isn't just women who want remote starts. I worked in a shop full of guys, i don't know how many had them but here it gets to be MINUS 30-40 degrees or worse in the wintertime and those that did have remotes loved getting into a warmed-up vehicle and clear windshield. So, some guys were pissed off about the range some had over another guy's. I didn't have remote start and drove a VW TURBO DIESEL 5-Spd. Manual.
It's easy to see the connector wasn't fully secured until you secured it towards the end. Very well done Eric! As always you are amazing. Hope you get your voice back soon.
Here's a story with a remote start. a lady complaining she would come in the house, set her purse on the bar and her car would start outside.. she said "it's not my remote, because it's laying on the bar by my purse" (long story short) her remote start had two fobs, the second one was in the bottom of her five pound purse lol (too funny but true) great video as always! I hadn't noticed the speaking problem but we'll be Praying for you!
Don't know how many times I've removed that crap due to causing CEL and drivability issues. Great friend of mine installed them for several years, told him if I ever have to fix a vehicle for drivability issues due to a remote starter or something he installed, we'd have to stop being friends. We both laughed and he said "will never happen".....it's been about 10yrs, and we're still great friends!
What we used to call a trigger finger wiring fault. Some times takes longer than a two wheel brake job to find. You have a great intuition Eric and it pays off for you every time. 👍🔧🛠⚡️it’s like the car is talking to you .
Another great video of real world problems. Great work Mr. O. I found a similar problem on a 1990s Jaguar that would stall at random times. I did some wiggle tests and just as I was going try another approach, sort slammed the passenger door and it stalled immediately. Right inside that door in the glove compartment was the ecm. A check of the connectors revealed one side was hooked into the socket normally but the other side was just inside the socket. I pushed both sides to connect properly. Problem solved
This makes me so glad that nearly all of the current gen Toyotas come with remote start integrated into the DCM/Telematics system by default. Set up the trial account once and shebam, key fob remote start forever. As of the 2023MY all Rav4s have remote start built into them by default. Even the basest trim. It's nice.

I warn my customers against after market remote starters for just this reason. The issues they and the installers cause. I have lost count how many remote starters I have tossed in the trash, Great job once again Eric
So, the install didn't look bad, I've certainly seen/removed much worse. That does not look like a BestBuy Slamstall. Why the plug wasn't locked properly was an unfortunate oversight. I've done plenty of CS installs, Toyotas are super easy (compared to many), now I personally choose to use plug-in kits now, very little tapping in or soldering to do and easily removed. That is a quality starter she has installed, the installer just left a plug loose. Could have happened from anybody who's been in there in-between, we don't know for sure.

The repair was a lot easier than I thought it was gonna be. No aftermarket remote starters for me. They're for lazy people anyway. As far as the speech impediment goes, when I'm under the dash I'm usually choking on snot so my speech isn't so great either. Great vid as always. Thanks.
I spent two days putting my remote start in a 2002 Explorer. Took the driver seat to lay down to do it. And i did the solder & heat shrink bit and made it as tidy as I could. Loved having the remote start.
I worked in a few shops many years ago and I also hated the aftermarket remote start crap. Even now I put stuff in my dash it's a pain to work around. So I started splicing connectors in whatever I wire. Could unplug it at certain points and remove it for service.
If you didn't talk about your speech problem I wouldn't have noticed it. You still speak so much more clearly than most USA U-Tube videographers that I find you one of the easiest to listen to. (I don't think you just have a better microphone than the others)
I can confirm that the remote starters are not done by Toyota. Bought a new 2022 Tacoma last year and added the remote start to my truck order. The guy that was doing it for them stopped and they took it to a local place that installs remote starters and stereos.
My 2021 Toyota Camry did not come in with heated seats. The dealer sent it to a 3rd party shop and had it installed. I made sure that this DID NOT void the Toyota Warranty. Supposedly, if it was 'Dealer Installed', it did not.
Smiling! I go by the rule of if my car is starting, I want to be there to listen for things that shouldn't be making noise. NOT A Mechanic! My dad who was a mechanic told us boys if we wanted to be one, he would hit us in the head with a wrench. Learned much from him over the years that has saved me much money. Passed it along to my son, and lord knows how many motors and transmissions he went through that I helped him fix. Taught him how to hold the spark plug wire to check spark just like my dad did us on a lawn mower. My daughter not too bad on the little stuff, like oil changes and other things. She had heard of the spark check trick and didn't fall for it.
I agree with your assessment of aftermarket remote starters. I bought a used S10 Blazer that had an aftermarket remote starter/security system. The first time I was working on the truck, I rolled down the windows and unlocked the doors. I walked away from the vehicle and didn't get 20 feet before it rolled up the windows and locked the doors. My next act was to figure out who manufactured it and obtained the installation instructions so that I could more easily trace the wiring to remove it all. Lucky for me, the installer only removed the insulation from the factory wiring in spots and wrapped the new wires around them and taped them. There were no Scotch locks or solder, just electrical tape. I pulled everything out and used multiple coats of liquid insulation and covered it with electrical tape. Problem solved. I really enjoy your videos, thanks.
Yep. Experienced this one in my step daughter's car. ( Bought second hand from dealer). Intermittent engine stall when turning. Dealership couldn't replicate. Two weeks and she wrote it off merging onto highway. Lost power, couldn't turn, collided with a car towing a van. Nearly cost her and my wife and the occupants of the other car their lives. No remote start fitted. Think it was a factory fault. What's done is done. No permanent injuries. Live, and learn.
Eric "35 scotch locks, a roll of tape." Me "and one tail light fuse!" Yup. Mobile guy installed an aftermarket burglar alarm on my (then) 2006 Nissan Frontier at my work. He was nice enough to blow the tail and parking light fuse which I didn't find out till later on. 6 years later I had to remove the dash. Going back together I removed the alarm, then proceeded to solder and shrink tube all the damaged wiring! Good one Mr. O! When you said 2017 RAV4 you got my attention! I have a 2020 RAV4 without the remote starter. It's the base model. Key-in-the-ignition to start and run.
Often times people put everything on their keychain including the kitchen sink and all that weight will destroy the internals in the ignition switch and it will need to be replaced. Guys that put those aftermarket anything is a nightmare. From stereos, alarms and remote starters. They often times will butcher everything they touch. I usually don’t do other peoples rework unless I’m going to get paid for it. Having to redo someone else’s work is always a nightmare. Keep doin what you do bruh!

Solder has no place in a wiring harness
Good Catch Eric!! Dealerships generally won't spend time on stuff like that. That's why you are a Top Diag/Mechanic!! You spend the time NEEDED to address, solve and repair the issue professionally!!

tracking down an intermittent fault is always a burden....you did well....i always become impatient and frustrated after about 10 minutes but that's why expert professionals like yourself are out there......being persistent, exhaustively complete, and methodical is the only way
Totally agree but some mechanics just load the parts cannon 🎉just wish Eric was closer to NYC
Asking a dealership to fix this problem would have cost hundreds of dollars
and wasted time with no solution. Your persistence and work ethic are unparalleled !👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
It wouldn’t have a problem if they never got an aftermarket remote start installed…
The customer also voided any warranty they did have too 🤷♂️
@@christophervanzetta They only voided warranty if what Eric did directly resulted in a failure, otherwise, warranty still stands.

Almost makes you wish it had a red locking tab 😂. As a Mopar guy I had to throw that out there. Love the channel! You are an amazing mechanic!
THE ONE TIME!!! Hahah good comment man
Some of these connectors today you gotta be Harry Fricken Houdini to unlock !
Was considering a remote start system for my car, but after watching your videos I've decided to build a heated garage instead. LOL
You are wise in your generation.

I’m 50 years old now. I remember my dad had an awesome remote start for his car that never failed.

Why do people hang heavy junk from their car key? The key cylinder is meant to support the key; nothing else.
@@pattersonfilm9117 Yes ,just getting to fuse panels under dash or even changing the dimmer switches back when was a pain .
Same with alarm systems they hack the harness up so bad. Like you I like to remove them and toss them in the garbage.
Great video. Even though the fault was in a difficult position to video I could see exactly what you were doing. Brilliant.
I see that this was a year ago yet it was so enjoyable to watch thankyou Eric O! Dont know what you're talking about concerning "speaking" you sound fine!

Great job Eric. I wouldn't have guessed there would be so much wiggle in that steering stalk assembly. Thanks for taking us along.
Another great job. Im thinking about moving to your town, just so i can have an awesome mechanic!!! You are definitely the man!!!
An honeset mechanic and an honest accountant are two of the most important people that you can hire.
You are the best auto troubleshooter I have ever seen. I wish I had a shop near me with half your ability.
You're definitely an inspiration for all new mechanics to take on the trade.
Mr. O, @ around 16:00, you can see the connector, and it looks like the male part is not flush with the female. After you have a solid connection, it appears the male is flush with the female.
Great eye!! You can see the connector move. If it was plugged in all the way, the wires might move, but not the block.
Well, I bet that new electrical tape was mighty expensive😂
But yes, I it is clearly visible earlier in the video that the connector was not properly seated.

@@hvacr24 I had one installed that would actually run until it ran out of gas, and you only had to press one button to start it.
Makes me wonder if it was on the same frequency as a close neighbor, starting both vehicles?
Some people just don't start with the basic of things and work their way out like you do. And yes you do speak clearly.
Reminds me of the early nineties in Australia, insurance companies were big on immobilizers being fitted and every man and his dog were fitting them. It was scotch lock city and nothing but trouble.
They probably *did* immobilize vehicles, even if unintentionally. 😁
Thank you!
Absolutely love your debugging. I wish more people in IT thought like you.
we wouldnt of done that though. we would of just unplugged everything and tested it first then plugged in everything one by one until we could get it to reboot like that.
No worries Eric we love all you do and pray for your recovery
What happened to Eric ? Is that why his voice sounds different than usual?
I learned a long time ago, "the thing that changed is the cause" see it a zillion times!
Be nice to occasionally see a customers reaction when you tell them what the fix ultimately was.
Who would want to do that!?
21years of Honda assembly line experience and I can remember the millions of issues that derived from soft set couplers We had assembly quality checks on line for just such issues
YOU SOUND FINE !
I zoomed into the video and I can see that connector move each time it wigged out. When you pulled it towards you it was fine but when the connector was pushed away it tripped.
Eric, you are much smarter than the average Bear! I'm not surprised a dealership could not figure it out.
i found out over the years with aftermarket remote starts. Never question a woman about removing them, its like cancelling their hair appointment
Manual.
A sloppy job this would make a person never go back I wonder if the dealer will help this women with the cost. Once again your da MAN
It's easy to see the connector wasn't fully secured until you secured it towards the end.
Nice work Eric. I've chased ghosts introduced by poor workmanship in auto electrical in a former life and that was textbook effort right there.

Does anyone really know it was the installer and not a factory mixup
@@josephprainito662 It was the installer. Anyone who hass worked on cars can see that. Especially when a remote starter is installed.

Great job, Eric!!
Hi, Mr. O. Oh, the frustration of the chief detective. But perseverance carried the day. Thanks for sharing! Stay healthy!
Well WTH! That is a strange issue!! You get all of the good ones Eric. You just have too much fun there! LOL ☺
I really enjoy watching your work and have found you just maybe two months ago. My only desire would be that you have better lighting.
Eric you fixed it that's all that matters, the owner is happy :-D
The stealership failed lol.
Eric "35 scotch locks, a roll of tape." Me "and one tail light fuse!"
Yup.

Nice find! Your diagnostics are spot on man. I normally hate paying a diagnostic fee to shops, but if it was yours I wouldn't even bat an eye!
Over 40 years I always found connectors suspect!
Often times people put everything on their keychain including the kitchen sink and all that weight will destroy the internals in the ignition switch and it will need to be replaced.
Guys that put those aftermarket anything is a nightmare. From stereos, alarms and remote starters. They often times will butcher everything they touch.
