- In this video I have a look at a customers 2007 Honda Odyssey that was towed in with a complaint of no power. By no power, I mean NONE! This thing will not even come off an idle. We need to gather a little data and go with our gut and past experience on this one for the win. -Enjoy!

Having little to no tools myself diagnostic wise I might try and put my hand over the exhaust pipe and see or feel what is being expelled but I’ve just started the video

There's a reason you've got so many followers, straight, knowledgeable and honest.
Years ago I did a full exhaust change from the Y-pipe back on my 2000 Buick LeSabre with the N/A 3.8. Due to the gravel driveway being an issue for the stands, I ended up having to drive it up on some ramps after I had pulled the pipes. Naturally at 8pm I did it quietly, making sure to rev it only half a dozen times to enjoy that sweet splendor of an engine. I'm sure the neighbors enjoyed it as well. I like to share such wonders.

Dude the street value of that dust could have paid for the repair.
Used converters that are truly used don't have near the level of precious metals in them as they do when new. Hence why thieves don't bother with old cars even if they are easy to get to. Who ever is buying them will reject them. The catalyst wash that contains the precious metals eventually gets eroded off the honeycomb which is why they will fail even if the honeycomb doesn't over time.

@@Cragified well in the uk so many old converters, especially off Japanese cars are being stolen daily and cost about £1000 to replace , with sensors , as the scum just cut through everything 18v grinder , 30 seconds done , I have my own shop here in the UK and get about 60 /150 pounds for old ones I am replacing due to emission failures , diesels and dpf cars more
@@mikeberry304 Same thing here on the west side of the States. If you have a Prius or other hybrid it's only a matter of time. You hope they didn't just wedge the jack under the rocker panel and bend it all to hell. Or the oil pan. The latter happened to a poor grandma in my apartment parking lot. I heard her fire that thing up one morning and wandered out in my bunny slippers to give her the bad news. Then I saw the pool of liquid dinosaurs streaming from the parking spot and I felt even worse for the ol gal. It's a good thing she didn't try taking it to church like she planned to.
@@mikeberry304 I saw in the news from the uk, a guy was found deceased in a used car lot with a van on his chest. It fell off the jack while he was cutting off the converter. Moral of the story, alway chock the wheels when you’re stealing converters. :0
Use a infrared temp gun and check each side of the cats I've used it to find a cold running cylinders too, great videos love your channel! Sharing trade knowledge is the great thing about being a mechanic cheers from nz

During a training on catalytic converters about 15 years ago the instructor stated that over 90% of the time converters fail due to an engine issue. Basically converters are murdered by engine issues.
Good call on the diagnosis. Also I never used a fancy scope to test back pressure. I would unscrew an O2 sensor and put a pressure gage in its place and test that way. I even learned new technology.👍👍
Thats the way I do it. I can see how removing 1 plug and screwing in a transducer could save a boatload of time though. Sometimes 02 sensors don't want to come out.
@@mph5896 I agree. There is another way that I was taught that I don't like using and that one is to use a IR thermometer and measure the Temps pre cat and post cat. It's a fast way but not good enough solid evidence to condemn the converter in my opinion.
@@JoeBidenIsNotMyPresident we use the IR thermometer in a case like this to determine from front bank to rear bank if one is clogged. I agree you can’t confirm a bad cat with IR but it can save you from spending time on an unclogged on. 👍🏻
With tires like that, you should have left it plugged!
That vehicle wouldn’t be leaving my shop on anything other than a tow truck or a brand new set of tires.

Naper - not a sponsor - probably doesn't stock Honda compatible converter dust. Eric made a mistake in not saving the original dust in case he couldn't get a replacement bag of it.
Honda employs a sealed maintenance free blinker system, but you might be on to something w/ that dust contamination🤔🕵👀🤷
20 seconds in... Bad cat.
On the 1980 Chevy Citations the cat was filled with pellets. These had to be changed every 30k miles. There was a kit of pellets and a new plug at the dealer to do this service. A little yellow indicator came up over the odometer signaling time to service. The cluster cover had to be removed to access the flag.

Love the clips Dude. Watching from Malaysia where we have been under severe Lockdown for 31 says straight. Watching these clips reminds me of why I went 100% Rideshare here with GRAB and never need to worry about bangs and rattles in a personal vehicle. I let others do the driving and worrying about maintenance Mate! So cheap at only two bucks to head to the Mall.

Some folks operate under the misconception that the compatibility between Eric & Mrs O just happens magically. Believe the truth is it's a joint effort based upon a deeply woven mutual respect for each other's strengths that bind this relationship, Not magic, requires effort to sustain & flourish.

Outstanding diagnosis. I enjoy this video because the person speaking shares with the audience the customer complaint and shares the thought process and the possible diagnosis and diagnostic tools and tests to prove or disprove the cause or causes and shares its fairly obvious that another shop had tried and failed to repair and did a lousy job leaving the spark plug loose. Not only does this shop have to fix the actual problem, the shop agent has to find and fix the lousy work done by other shops in prior attempts. Outstanding job!

@@jeffleach2668 Eric O said the car's not registered in NY, that's a NJ plate on it. NJ does follow CARB, but only since 2009 and this is a 2007 vehicle so they may be able to get away with a federal cat instead of a CARB cat.

Way back in the 80's when I was a Honda motorcycle tech a Honda Odyssey was a small yellow dune buggy type machine . Some of the engines on the first run off those units had a defect that was never disclosed to us at the dealership . New engines were shipped to our shop to replace the engines that had the issue . With the regional Honda Service Rep standing there as a witness I was instructed to smash the engine cases and bend the crank shafts of the engines I had removed with a sledge hammer before they went for scrap . I didn't much like smashing those engines that were new and had never ran . All these years later I still think of that day when I hear someone say " Honda Odyssey ."

That van’s engine sounds like it was originally in a diesel semi….
Yep, my guess is that it has over 200,000 miles and the valves have never been adjusted. Honda V6's need valve adjustments every 100,000 miles or so. The exhaust valves are probably burned as a result. The owner's maintenance philosophy seems to be "drive it till it quits, then fix it." Look at the obviously misaligned front end that destroyed the tires (thread showing.)

@@JamesSterling The valves are most likely burned because of the plugged exhaust. A plugged cat holds the heat in, and causes all kinds of issues as it slowly cooks the heads as it plugs up worse and worse.

Imagine that going off inside a oil change shop. Dips were fiddling around with a Honda's battery terminals, when the ECM decided it had enough and set off the horn. I was in front of the ride and got an earful of Japan's finest.

And then had ChrisFix pour a sponsored fluid in the tank and call it fixed.
Vcm loves to kill that rear cat, done a lot of reading on Honda's cylinder deactivation. When cruising oil gets forced up through the oil rings from the pressure having no place to go which pools up then when it's reactivated it burns that oil and slowly starts to kill the primary cat by coating it in burned up oil. Happened to mine that's why I looked this up someone even made a vcm muzzler.
What is a VCM on a Hyundai?
It consists of a DC motor which actuates the VCM valve and a position sensor which detects the position of the VCM valve. The VCM system tumbles air flow entering into combustion chamber of each cylinder by closing the VCM valve in the cold start conditions.

Tires probably haven't been changed because they are Michelin PAX run flats. Long ago discontinued, I believe the rims have to be changed out to be able to use conventional tires. Have a 2008 Odyssey, thank fully did not buy the run flats.

i've had several of the 3.5 engines dislodge the filament in the upstream converters resulting in the exact same accumulations in front of the rear cat...what happens is a piece or chunk breaks loose in an upstream cat and blows and jostles around in the housing slowly disintegrating and then collecting in front of the downstream cat causing a blockage, the initial piece that came dislodged can also be beat around enough to become round at which time it can get stuck in the pipe and act as a plug so its important to make sure the entire pipe is clear especially around the bends.
Tell the truth...it is easier to pull three exposed nuts on the converter than pulling a rear bank spark plug that is hidden....LOL

The kitchen is probably there so she can keep a healthy eye on where and what he's having for lunch. For all we know, she may be fixing their supper there also to save time after they head home in the evenings. If so, good on Mrs. O. for taking good care of her family.
Nothing like getting another dose of SMA. Get me through the rest of my day. I’ve seen some plugged exhaust. This ones as bad as it gets. Normally ya see big chunks of honey cones falling out in pieces. That one looked like it was caked with ash. Something tells me this guys gonna either tell Eric he’s gonna run with it without the ash or swap the old one with a new one. I’d prefer the later. The compression test did a good job of finding the back pressure in the cylinders on the exhaust stroke. Nice work Eric. I hope this guy allows you to fix it properly with a new one.

Judging from the almost bald tires, the wrong spark plugs and a plugged cat, these people probably have ZERO money to fix their car.
they are not OEM plugs, not the 'wrong' plugs. Multiple brands make plugs for cars. I prefer NGK personally. Those tires must have a few more revolutions in them! (before they pop)
@@zakuraayame5091 Bosch makes a good pmug though but for japanese cars it's usually japanese plugs. Bosch might well be the oem manufacturer fron honda in some markets though.
those are Bosch plugs....just as good as NGk..it's not like he used autolite plugs or something...
So, the ol' Italian tune-up it is!
I always buy bosch ones and never had problems with them. I one time bought ngk and it snapped on install, no excessive force was used.

I do inspections and emissions all day. Nothing has changed. As long as your check engine light is off, and the tests are passed, if passes. Replacement cats are still sold and completely legal as long as, see above.

My assumption looking at the overall condition of the van and that knocking out all the crap likely made it run a lot better, the customer will decide on the put it back together as is, charge the labor and write down what you found on the invoice route.

Very interesting on this one, I've heard about this type of issue and recall my old Buick had a blocker converter. From that I learned about oil burning in the system, yepper, one year later Plugged again. Learned lots more, they put a after market part in the car it lasted 20,000 miles!! replaced it again and said GOOD BY to that car. lol, thank for sharing this interesting issue. Great job Eric O. Keep them coming and I'll keep watching.
