Shout out to "Z3R0-Given" for being crazy enough to spend over $40 with my SC refferal code. I hope the alpha is treating you well. It unlocked a new pew pew for my ship as a reward, although I'm not quite sure how to use it yet lol x'D
I'm jealous... I HAD THAT CARD and had that option.... and chose a different game because "Star Citizen was just this thing in the development, not a real game." Yes, I deeply regret not getting that pack w/ Mustang Omega!
this is crazy. I watched your water cooling videos like 10-12 years ago and forgot about this channel until this video popped up. And, funnily enough, 10-12 years ago is about the time I backed star citizen as well.
I like your soothing voice. Backer since 2012. I play the game often, & I love it. It's buggy (especially on an overloaded server) but there's so many amazing, unique experiences that I've never had in any other game. At $45, it's a great value. That's all that's needed. Additional ships help fund the game but are also earned in-game. The spiritual successor to Wing Commander is Squadron 42. It got so big it was split into 2 games. At 55 pounds, you got two AAA games, I think you've gotten quite the deal. Star Citizen has grown WAY beyond the initial Kickstarter. For example, the entire game was supposed to have 90 points of interest, and flying down to a planet was a cutscene (like Starfield). That's no longer the case. Now we're talking thousands of points of interest (with their new Genesis tech giving us thousands of places, per planet). And now, planets are actual planets. They originally had a poll up asking backers if they should take additional funding to make the game bigger, or just release the initial pledged version. Backers overwhelmingly voted they continue to fund and invest those funds right back into the game. So they did. Problem is, the increased scope increased development time. Is Star Citizen an MMO? MMO is a very flexible term. Elite Dangerous calls itself an MMO, but has a 32 player limit.......for an entire galaxy. Right now, I do NOT consider Star Citizen an MMO. For me, the minimum number of players for an MMO over 200 players. Right now the game can only handle 100 players. However, the upcoming 4.0 (scheduled to release this month and in testing with backers now) has server meshing. Server meshing has allowed them to get to that MMO level and even have as many 2,000 players in game during stress tests. Sea of Thieves is an excellent comparison. With each repairing ships, (putting out fires, replacing components, etc)., turret gunners (manning the cannons in SoT), and power management (the sails in SoT), and boarding/defending ships. What is the end game? The ultimate end game will be more like Eve where you build bases and stations and fleets of ships. Except you inside the ships/stations. But most people will be content to just explore and take missions. You just exist in the world, and define your own success and fun. They have players offering their service as guides on the website. Players volunteer their time to help you play the game. That's the best way to do it until their single player 'tutorial' introduction is done. It takes a lot of time and frustration to learn it all by yourself. People focus on the expensive multi-crew ship prices. Those massive ships are designed for large org goals, and the prices reflect that. Think of having an aircraft carrier with no crew - it's pointless! Some of these ships are designed to hold a crew of 80 people. They're intended for group play, and all ships can be earned (and eventually crafted) in-game. Everybody wants to be the captain. So you'll have no problem joining a crew.
@@drganknstein Hey I know sticks are where it's at if you wanna feel in control of your ship, but I don't have the money or space for sticks, so I'm glad Mouse and Keyboard works so well for this
regarding the crashes during SQ42 presentation at citizen con, turns out that the machine wasn't really prepared to run the gigantic screen on the con, the guy that played the intro section once the con was done for the day got back into the offices that same day and rerecorded the exact same build, but this time at a lower resolution and it didn't crash, you can find said upladed gameplay looking around if i remember correctly, Chris said before putting the PC and connecting it directly to the con display that they where yoloing it.
Ooooh Wing Commander was glorious. Not because of flying, nobody cared about that. But 6 CDs worth of cutscenes with top actors such as John Rhys-Davies and Mark Hamill, sets props costumes and all that, not like those other game cutscenes with amateur acting and static obvious greenscreen, and there was constant voice chatter along the missions, and those dialogue scenes where you have to quickly pick a reply in the cutscenes like in Telltale games. It was a game series that was trying to not be a game. You've got to understand, that was absolutely not a thing back then, unlike today.
@@eltreum1 Angel's execution and Hobbes revelation happened at the same time so you as the player lose your soulmate and best friend. I don't think of it like betrayal though because he was a Kilrathi sleeper agent that got activated. Sure he has all his memories with the humans as a friend/defector but imagine being activated is like waking up from a vivid dream where one accepts reality and puts the dream behind them. Anyone who enjoys this kind of scenario MUST watch Battlestar Galactica (2000s version)
I’ve only been a backer for a year and a half, and it is likely one of my most played games of all time with 600 - 700hrs at least. I’m constantly in awe about the visuals during exploration gameplay, and have done quite a bit of salvage too. I’m super excited for Pyro to release in the next few weeks, and will be jumping into it as soon as it does.
Star Citizen has essentially rebuilt its game a few times now. It’s not at ALL like the game it was when the kickstarter was going and I think that’s a good thing. It has WAY more to do now and already looks pretty good. When ray tracing comes in, it will look even better! A game of this scale will never look as detailed as something like Red Dead. For being an MMO style game, it is stunning. CIG has gone to great lengths to make the game work with no loading screens or transitions and I think that is an incredible feat on its own. The game will never be finished, and that just is what it is… but what it has done in this “alpha” state is incredible and will be even more incredible when it is actually optimized! I have pledged in 2015 and haven’t really started playing it seriously until I upgraded my PC about two years ago. It’s my go-to game and is so much fun if you can live/work around some of the jank. I encourage any patient person to try it now, and any inpatient person to try it at 1.0!
@stephenwakeman3074 the last thing any mmo needs is an end product. An mmo at end product is a dead mmo. The big question is can they get their servers stable?
Bought my Sabre Raven code for $50 on ebay while they were selling the Optane drives, was stunned when I looked up the price for Raven codes/accounts a few months ago.
I definitely forgot about it for a while but I've been playing on an off for about the last 10 years now joined an org and such gone through PC upgrades and built out a flight setup. I think with 4.0 patch coming soon and with a progress wipe so it's a good time to start learning as things have changed a lot since the early days so even veteran players have to throw out their accumulated knowledge sometimes. Soon too as a crew member you'll have a lot more responsibilities than just operating turrets so there's no shortage of need there. The bugs are of course still a big thing in an ever changing game but the promise still exists that this can still become the best sci-fi game ever.
I'm be keen to hear your thoughts on it over time for sure. Especially since you seem to have different ideas about how you want to play and what you would be into from what i tend to see. For how bit this game is trying to be I think a lot of people forget just how many different play styles and game loops need to be worked on. Personally I've come to Star Citizen relatively recently after hearing about it for years. I'm in no rush. and really spending minimal amounts of money on it. But i appreciate just how groundbreaking what they are trying to build is and there is no way this would get built if it wasn't funded the way it is.
Awesome! I've been backing SC since 2014 as well and have been enjoying the game for a while now! I would suggest following the game over the next month for a hopeful 4.0 release with the new star system. Hop in then with a group. If you havn't seen some of the new planets in Pyro, they are absolutely stunning. Cant wait to see them on the live servers soon!
SC is a very unique project being crowd funded and playable as they build it. Its original scope was more like Starfield is today but the tech they are coming up with and their customized engine is quite impressive with its scale. Theres a reason game studio's never let players see a game until it's in final polish/beta because its slower when you have to stop to cobble a release patch quarterly when there are still parts missing. It's a neat project to follow if you like the process of development and enjoy making bug reports and give feedback but can be very frustrating to people who are not prepared for the bugs and drastic changes that sometimes come down the pipe. It's a good side game to watch and sample until its ready for a wider audience. I tell people try the free fly events before spending any money and if they buy in do so minimally and save the bigger ships for something to work towards in game. For me the single player game Squadron 42 was the bigger draw being a Wing Commander fan and at the time in EvE we had a war so huge it broke the game for a weekend, and they had to invent the dreaded Time Dilation mechanic to keep the servers from dying. TiDi was supposed to be a temp fix but 12 years later is still the limiting factor in wars. EvE was once upon a time trying to be what SC is with walking in stations and the beginnings of planetary resource gameplay, but the PvP alliances demanded new ways of sovereignty warfare and the devs abandoned the FPS aspect in EvE and wasted time and money on Dust 542 and Valkyrie as side titles to scratch that itch but it never went far. They wanted to try to do server meshing to address the war performance issues but the extreme PvP centric nature of the game chased most players off and limited their financial ability to do any R&D. SC is almost the opposite issue where is very micro focused on the individual immersion and hands on tasks but struggles to work in macro scale like EvE. For hardware 6 core 12 thread CPUs and 64GB RAM with a PCIe 4 NVME SSD is where things peak at 1080p and more just makes loading faster/smoother in 4k HD typically. My 11th Gen Intel gets the same FPS as someone with a 32 core AMD Threadripper CPU and 3080ti like my PC has. The game is still unoptimized and very CPU bound but adding Vulkan and FSR/DLSS/TSA helped for some but still CPU bound. Going from a Ryzen 5 to 7 will help load times and some smoothness as you come out of warp at a planet but FPS will still be lower than expected for now. Faster SSD read speed, and RAM speed seems to be the most impactful for performance once you are on a CPU made in the last 5 years.
Star Citizen is a space-based life sim set in a shared, persistent, and continuously immersive universe. That's the most succinct description I can give. Anyway, it's a live service game. Development continuing indefinitely doesn't mean never finishing with the original features and content. And those subscriptions aren't required to play the game. THAT's the kind of subscription they said they won't have.
14:35 there is an ingame tutorial, though it doesn't cover much beyond basic survival and how to get to your ship and fly. The main way to learn the game is through friends teaching you honestly. and if you don't have friends that play, just ask in chat if someone is up to teach you. I've done this for a handful of new players and it's a fun experience imo
I seriously was just thinking about this game the other day and forgetting what it was called... I knew a guy hyping it up so much talking about how the economy in-game would translate to other things and then I never heard more about it. Perfect timing and interesting perspective.
One thing I'd really love to see is someone doing a video showing all of the major gameplay loops and features that are implemented now. It would give a sense of how far along the game actually is.
That video would be hours long. Mining, salvage and cargo hauling are pretty fleshed out at this point. I find FPS combat to be a bit of a hit and miss, as it relies more heavily on server performance. Server performance is really the main thing that is holding this alpha from being playable for a wider group of gamers. It is just so inconsistent.
Probably the best way of learning how to do things in SC is to join others, SC is best in multiplayer. There are lots of small, local to you, orgs with regular players that can guide people. You also don't need the bigger ships, others have them and need crew.🚀
Been following you for what feels like 10 years, since undergrad and been a backer since then too. I'm just gonna accept that every PC reviewer I've been following since kickstarter days has been a backer of star citizen also LOL; like who hasn't at this point haha. Cool vid!
Arena Comander has offline mode, and has the 'private server' functionality you're speaking of for now. The scope of the game did change based on a community vote.
Very informative video. I also have a Mustang Omega. Keep it!! When the game releases (1.0), the value may increase of this ship. Tip...look at what people are selling theirs on Ebay as a reference.
I wouldn't worry too much about not having a set of sticks to play. I'm coming up on two years of fairly steadily playing SC, and for the first year I only used mouse and keyboard. Since then I added a set of pedals to control my roll when flying. KBM flying is 100% doable, although you have to be a bit more touchy with your thruster inputs. I prefer flying mainly in "decoupled mode" with gravity comensation enabled. It makes making fine adjustments in your direction of travel more managable on keyboard. Very nice for landing.
I backed in 2014 as well. I knew Chris Roberts' reputation prior to that. So that also prompted me to assemble the beefiest rig that I could at the time, in anticipation of it: an i7 4770k, 16GB of DDR3 RAM and a MSI GTX 670 Power Edition video card. Which has been obsoleted twice over while I wait...😅
Progress? I guess.. but I still stand by what I said 10 years ago. Which is, we will already have real-life bases on Mars, before SC releases. Heck.. maybe before it reaches beta.
@@Penfolduk001 They didnt scrap the engine because they wanted to. Cryengine was going to sue them if they didn't pay them to use the engine or stop using it. They opted to use Lumberyard instead which is free. They have had to start all over again from scratch.

The potential is there. Ive spent a ridiculous amount on this game so I hope it succeeds but they make some stupid decisions sometimes. A big new patch is coming so I would suggest checking it out once the big game breaking bugs have been ironed out.
A casual zero to hero walkthrough would be cool. But if you do it, you need an experienced partner, and by exp i mean someone who plays star citizen more or less often. A few years ago I would have doubted it, but for some time now it has been a sure thing. Star Citizen is inevitable. The game will be released and it will be the biggest and most ambitious game in history. The most fun or played? surely not. Even if many things have been casualised or simplified, SC is still a sim and that will be its main audience, speaking of Star Citizen. Because Squadron 42 is something else. And Arena Commander will be too... you'll see.
5:04 your initial understanding was correct. The confusion comes because a lot of people who have not been following the development closely miss the part where, in 2015, CIG had a vote with backers to change directions because of Planet & streaming tech they developed. The original pitch would have the game like how Starfield is with loading screens between landing areas. When one of the dev’s showed Chris Roberts how the tech worked, they realized what they could accomplish. It’s how they’ve been able to accomplish vastness with no loading screens being able to see the threads of a rug & zoom out all the way to space. They brought this info to all the backers & asked to vote if they wanted this change.
People keep saying there was a "VOTE", but I was there when they introduced the tech and there was no vote. There was simply an announcement that this is what they were doing.
When I was researching the game to try to catch up for this video, I did see a few mentions of this vote, but couldn't find it directly. If you could point me in the right direction I'd be interested in reading about it.
Instead of saying that "they realized what they could accomplish," it would be more accurate to say that once again they saw something cool and shiny and decided to drop all of their previous plans and pivot to something new without thinking about the ramifications.
@@alandab No they was an announcement about the potentiality of 64-bit floating point processing but they held two votes. SaltyMike showed the links and the vote results several times, but I can't recall which videos in particular because he's gone over it multiple times as people have complained about the length of time it has taken to develop. And while he has been super critical of CIG he has also admitted he did vote for them to expand the game.
I would say yes to you doing more Star Citizen videos, but with the latest LIVE patches and 4.0 testing it's not looking too good right now. Maybe they can pull off a miracle and get 4.0 out before Christmas, but whether it's playable or not is the question. I love the game and want it to do well, but man it really feels like they don't want me to like it a lot of the time xD I will say you HAVE to try the jumpgate before you shelve the game again. It's an incredible experience!
Hello! 8 year back here. Loved the video. I always enjoy hearing other people's thoughts and opinions. If you would ever like to have a talk with someone who has been following the project for a while, I'd be delighted to get in contact.
Yeah, they're releasing a whole new star system which is what is important. Not the fact that the game is so buggy that it's almost unplayable. What we need is more content. Over this last week I experienced elevators that prevented me from getting where I needed to go. Glitching into walls numerous times. Not being able to refill my ship's fuel because the station wouldn't recognize it. Crashing on a hover bike and teleporting miles away to who knows where. If you want to experience bugs that make a game unplayable, this is the game for you. 👍
13:36 -- If your four drives aren't already raided, then an NVME raid seems to be a possible avenue for squeezing out a bit more performance -- and yes, I am morbidly curious on how well you can get it to perform. I'm now asking myself, "Yeah, but can it play Star Citizen?" in place of the old Crysis meme.
Funny thing about performance is that it’s simply got very different requirements from other games. It’s just not very GPU dependent, but rather CPU bound, and a fast SSD is an absolute must. I wouldn’t say it runs great, but it’s playable on my GTX 1070 since I recently upgraded to a 5700X3D and have it installed on an NVME SSD.
I'm with you, I quite enjoy being a crew member in Star Citizen. Gunner, mining operator, cargo stevedore, that sort of thing. I'm hanging out for the introduction of the engineering and fire fighting aspects of the game too. I'd recommend NOT spending any more money on the game. All the ships can be purchased for in game currency and right that that's pretty much the only form of progression (except for the reputation system) so skipping the work required for that that is skipping much of the current purpose of the game. Also, look into the game Guide system - you can book a player as a guide to show you the ropes - and they can only be better than the current tutorial system which is notorious for having more bugs than a bullfrogs breakfast.
Star citizen is (currently) 2 games being developed in parallel. Where one is the story mode, and the other is a sandbox like open world multi-player game. It is a space ship fly8ng game with ground combat as an fps. technically you can fight in 3rd person. But it isn't ideal. The game has been in development for (depending on who you ask) 12 years. With the studio describing "serious" development going on for around 8 years now. This is all based on if you consider the Kickstarter date the beginning or after the bought their first studio or when they switched to the newer game engine. The development has been rough and indeed has no clear end in sight. Based on the user numbers, the avg player has invested more than $100 in the game.
It's actually five games being developed in parallel, with a rumored sixth unannounced game possibly in development: Squadron 42, Star Citizen, Star Marine, Arena Commander, and Theaters of War.
You don't need a Joystick or HOTAS to be a good pilot, but it certainly makes the game more immersive. Most pilots who use joysticks prefer HOSAS over HOTAS. Often times with pedals. Dual joysticks with twist provide 6 axes of control which is good when your flying in a game which has 6 degrees of freedom. When it comes to learning to fly, some youtubers I'd recommend are Avenger One Johnathan Winters, and PartySquid. Some of their content is from the previous flight model, but its mostly applicable.
For your interests I think you’d enjoy a visit to this game, but the technical headaches do remain. My best experience was running salvage, courier, and mercenary missions with my boyfriend in a cutlass black. We would have preferred my 315p but the whole 300 series has a jump bug where the ship and everything in it simply disappears if you’re not sitting in a chair, and that’s seriously frustrating. One of the big events like siege or prison or jumptown is especially good for e teamwork you’re looking for, but finding a good community in this game is not effortless.
yea i also bought a HOTAS back in 2015 just to play star citizen, lucky for me i bought the Thrustmasters Warthog used on ebay and actually sold it with profit 8 years later.
Initially, there was some vagueness about what kind of game it would be, I don't think they fully knew themselves. But soon afterward it became clear that we would get a Wing Commander-style game in SQ42 and an MMO-style game in SC. Afaik the vast majority of the players only ever bought a starter pack. I bought a starter pack that included both games for €60, and have not bought anything since. However, it has to be said that the temptation is always there. Some players go a bit crazy with buying ships, but they are a small minority. Also, many of these players do it at least partly to help fund the game. And I am grateful to them for that. I hope this funding model will remain in place. People have been getting refunds and are still able to get refunds, afaik... It only makes sense, you can't sell something, not deliver, and expect everyone to be okay with that. I backed the game because I am an old Wing Commander player. And even after all these years, I am still very excited about SQ42. I've also had some unique experiences in SC multicrewing some ships with some awesome people. Adventures I wouldn't have missed for the world. The whole voice chat thing; living as a group of friends in a big spaceship together, is just such a cool experience.
I'd like to know more about this game. I've heard of the controversy and knew a few people who backed it. So I'd be interested in seeing your content on its performance :) Also, commenting for the algorithm!
You were day tripping whs in a Widow ? Sounds like your Eve experience has been interesting xd. Frankly, to get the best understanding of SC, you need to go through so much material, and understanding CRs mind helps too. Tbh, the current scale of SC is prob beyond most other games already...
i guess this must be common here, but my god your voice is so pleasant to hear :) Now on the video, interesting to point the graphics quality of a game is not set at any point, it is usually among the final touches the game receives, features like ray tracing is a example, and as it doesn't pretty much add anything to polygon count, mesh detail and model quality, it is pretty good that they are adding it by now, since if you put SC side by side with any game, you will see that it's models for weapons ships and even terrain and interiors, is matched by only a few games, and in only some assets class, humans shading and animation being the point where the game still needs to improve, but it is not that far from top tier class. The long development time definitely brings downs, but some massive ups too. Now definitely was very interesting listening your take on the game since you where not in contact with it's development and progresses as well as failures like others who are closely following, they definitely need a clear definition for SC in a promo video or something like it, and make sure it is well known. EDIT: Oh and remember to never leave that ship open when you're doing box missions or anything that requires landing, some people will steal that ship immediately if they see it open :)
The X3D chips will currently make a big difference, even if it's just in the double digits. (although open space can yield triple digits). You can fly with Mouse & Keyboard of course, and many of us that don't immediately have HOTAS or similar setups, do so. Definitely explore what the game has today, utilising Google Search/UA-cam videos on the particular things you're looking to learn (or do) - If you put aside the fact it's still an alpha, there are some enjoyable & 'promising' (let's be honest, it's still a delayed game) aspects to be explored, with patience.
Im in the project from the start and I haven't played Star Citizen seriously yet. With higher player count, persistent Hangars and the new physicalized Cargo, for the first time I am willing to put more time into the game. However with it currently being on the threshold of the 4.0 wipe and some stability Issues I will wait a little longer still. In a quarter or two we should also see the engineering gameplay released. By the End of next Year we should also see the first iteration of smallish player bases in the game. Right now the scope is enough for me to want to invest time. By the End of next year there will be some more compelling features. 1.0 however will be a few more years on top before every feature can be considered polished enough and I personally will enter the fray before that. If right now seems inconvenient I would recommend to wait for maybe another year to see how things develop.
Tasty, you need to play PC versions of Wing Commander 3 and 4, make sure you have some popcorn and a large drink with you... 50% gameplay, 50% movie. You've missed out never playing these as a scifi nerd. Also, congrats - your 2024 goal was 12/12 you've managed 6/12, it's still worth you making content just remove the pressure on yourself and you will likely get out more videos naturally - also, make content on things you want to, then you will find it easier to make quicker content and easier content - you definitely have a place on YT, you've proved that after all these years 👍 Oh and Merry Christmas 🎄 and check out WC 3 and IV, enjoy!
I think sometime around 2016 or so they started making servers on AWS. They also broke up some of the needed services from the main server. This meant that mod-able servers would cost about $10,000 UDS a month for AWS cluster. Or, it would require a monumental effort on the server team to make a fairly small version of the servers. The small server would require that you would have a very limited number of players that could play at one time and it would ruin multi crew shits that have a high number of players. I'm not sure if it's official but star citizen is an MMO and mod-able servers aren't likely. The 4.0 development is going to make it an MMO by more modern definitions of an MMO. They are currently working on 500 player servers. This is exciting. The last time I played the 4.0 build (EPTU), there were about 250 players servers available. I found there where a lot more players around and it was a lot less lonely, even in far-flung space stations. As for how the are going to monetize after release, is a good question. Selling game packages, ships paints and in game plushies might not be enough. I currently believe that a subscription model is the best way to go. It keeps the servers running future development going and the players would know what to expect. Multicrew gameplay is pretty limited at the moment. Engineering is coming soon (hopefully 4.1 in Q1 2025) and I think that would be a good time to come back and give it a try. Otherwise, the game is in a buggy state with a flight model that is in the middle of big changes (look up "Master Modes" for more information). You will have to be the judge if you are willing to be more then an occasional tourist with the game as it is. If you're looking in to HOTAS (or HOSAS) you should consider "Virpil Controls." They make some of the best gear around, with some of the best build quality. But, rob some banks, they're pricy.
Hah, ivown the AMD Mustang too. Though by now I have many more ships. With the Polaris, multicrew has reached it's most advanced stage yet. I think it's now a good time to test that aspect of the game.
wth i had no idea that amd mustang existed. it looks pretty sick ngl. but yeah the games def on the cpu and memory side. amds x3d chips have been know to be literally THE chips for star citizen. for performance stuff, tenpoundfortytwo makes great videos covering performance and hardware for sc. for someone who hasnt really played much if at all, id say 4.0 would be a good point to jump in to experience everything. but not 4.0 exactly of course. wait till it stabilizes a bit. hopefully with the inclusion of some working server meshing. so realistically, sometime q2 of next year? but were talking sc here so that could def be more like q4
With this degree of feature creep, one wonders why they don't just drop the "alpha" tag, and own the notion that a space epic like this will be an ongoing work-in-progress? With the multiple funding rounds, they're almost at the Activision-Blizzard expansions model, where they add new major features through paid-for upgrades. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, either. If they really are going for a galaxy-spanning MMO, as some of your commenters suggest, that might be the most sustainable business path for an ever-expanding galaxy. Engineer the game so people who are happy at their current tier can keep playing at that tier, and I don't see a downside. Vanity purchases, and promotions like your AMD ship, could provide the business case for that effort. This was an intriguing, thought-provoking video. Thank you, Lauren. 👍
@tastypc... all these years I've followed you and finally ... im about to take the plunge.. and I just signed up to patreon... Hope you and the family are well Lauren x I also occasionally hop onto SC ...
Awesome video! On the HOTAS front get another one and try Elite Dangerous its getting loads of updates just now and has a ongoing live story. On Star Citizen i dont care if they release or not now. But if they pull it off. It will be incredible. More space games, Im down. 😍
Windows Defender (malware) also hits the CPU a bit hard when playing SC. If you disable it or give an exception you should see your GPU usage and FPS go up a bit.
i7 with 8 cores 16 threads or equivelent AMD processor and a 4060 or equivelent AMD card with 16 but reccomend 32gb ram. Doesn't require a monster system like most liars will say lol. My friend plays on an i7, a 4060 8gb, 32gb ram and he plays just fine. want 4k? 4080 or same AMD card and newer i7 with 16 cores 32 threads. Game is more cpu dependant right now.
star citizen is like modding skyrim. its not about the game itself, modding is the game. And here its the ship game. Getting new shiny ships, upgrading and switching them is the game in the game.
It'll definitely be worth giving SC another go to check out 4.0, but probably not when it launches (likely before xmas). I'd wait a few months for them to iron out the worst bugs and glitches. Currently the 4.0 build is improving almost daily but it still has a ways to go. Going through jump gates is very cool and the Pyro system is a real work of art. Regarding HOTAS, if you buy any well known brand Logitech or ThrustMaster stuff it's mostly cheaply manufactured, poor quality plastic stuff that will probably break in a year or two. You need to go for more specialist brands like VKB or Virpil - these products have much higher quality components and good durability. Despite being more expensive, they are better value for money in the long run. VKB's Gladiator NXT is highly recommended and probably the cheapest stick out there that isn't built like a toy.
Hey Lauren, long time sub to the channel, and long time backer of SC! Please do some SC performance videos, I have a 5950x and 3080ti w/ 64gb ram. I'm looking to upgrade for SQ42 in 2026 (hopefully, lol) and I'd be curious to see what results you find with your testing methods. See you in the 'verse!
Im one of the newer backers, play since 3 years, my radeon driver says i have over 1000 hours played it. and i must say its my favorite game. and it runs smooth. if somebody need tipps for more fps, i did some vids, but only for radeon users.
SQ42 looks like it will be a lot of fun, when they finally release it they will be able to fully focus on Star Citizen I hope, also not every GPU can handle RT, so if they add it I hope it's a toggle, because most people can barely play the game as it is with standard raster..
I'd really like to play, however, I've moved away from Windows based platforms and gone Linux...until SC comes to Steam I'd have to faff to get it to run...
I loved playing freelancer with my dad when I was a kid, we just traded goods through several systems all day and bought better weapons, shields and ships, my dad would get the biggest cargo ship we could afford and my brother and I would get figher ships to shoot down the pirates on the route. Always expected this would be a successor to that but I fear they wanted too much too fast its so unoptimized due to them not having made an original engine, I think this is ultimately doomed to fail
Game runs great most of the time...what are you even on about!? When the servers are flooded there are issues, yes. However their server tech has never been done before and those who play the game are really just testers for a full release. There are bugs but it has NEVER claimed to be in a full release state. The progress has been far above and beyond what most people think. There are systems being created for things no one has ever seen in any game ever. Triple A studios have spent more time on games than SC and they even had all the resources and engines that they knew how to work and also could do exactly what they wanted them to do. No engine has ever been made to do the things SC is doing except maybe UE 5 now with all the newest feature sets. People who do nothing but complain because they expect things to happen as fast as they want just bother me. Patience is a virtue and huge strides have been made and the proof is there for ANYONE to see and play. I have friends who play and have fun on lower end rigs too.

You don't need to throw a lot of money into playing this game. My computer has 2 years already, I play mouse and keyboard and it works perfectly (I also have a hotas and pedals, and prefer the mouse+keyboard). An entry ship is all you need... and as you say... make friends and use their ships... it is no only using bigger ships that is nice, but team play is fundamental to have fun in the verse... and if you need something bigger ingame buying/renting is available.
If you want a HOTAS system that won't break, and thanks to its highly modular design, is easily fixed or upgraded if it did, then check out the offerings from VKB. I'm very impressed with my setup, and the prices are much more reasonable than certain higher-end systems that have a reputation for breaking not long after the warranty ends. And as for SC, having watched this, I think I'll stick with Elite Dangerous, thanks all the same. As I've said for a long time (and I see no reason to change that opinion), I think we're gonna have real-life bases on Mars before SC is released. Heck, maybe even before it reaches beta.
I am an original backer. I am ever more confused about where this game is going. I think this game would be done if it wasn't for the massive amount of time spent in placeholder systems for the "live universe" in order to keep selling ships. I play a little after each major patch and mostly ignore the minor ones. It helps me manage the madness.
Shout out to "Z3R0-Given" for being crazy enough to spend over $40 with my SC refferal code. I hope the alpha is treating you well. It unlocked a new pew pew for my ship as a reward, although I'm not quite sure how to use it yet lol x'D
You know this game's been in development for some time, when your ship promo code is from an R9 series card.
im still waiting to play the game since that card purchase. 3 pc builds later..... no 4 as i just bought this black friday
I'm jealous... I HAD THAT CARD and had that option.... and chose a different game because "Star Citizen was just this thing in the development, not a real game."
Yes, I deeply regret not getting that pack w/ Mustang Omega!
@@AuralVirusYou know that you can play the Alpha!
@@HHallerYou can play the alpha with an R9 and it'll run like dogshit. Imagine that. It'll run terribly on a GPU it was packaged promo with!
this is crazy.
14:50 btw it's perfectly viable to fly on mouse and keyboard. it's what I use and prefer
Lame. 😂
@@drganknstein Hey I know sticks are where it's at if you wanna feel in control of your ship, but I don't have the money or space for sticks, so I'm glad Mouse and Keyboard works so well for this
@@lurakin88 LOL YEAH IM JUST MESSING WITH YOU. WHATEVER IS MOST FUN FOR YOU. OOPS CAPS
Would love to see you doing gameplay videos of star citizen, the community is more then happy to help new players.😊
regarding the crashes during SQ42 presentation at citizen con, turns out that the machine wasn't really prepared to run the gigantic screen on the con, the guy that played the intro section once the con was done for the day got back into the offices that same day and rerecorded the exact same build, but this time at a lower resolution and it didn't crash, you can find said upladed gameplay looking around if i remember correctly, Chris said before putting the PC and connecting it directly to the con display that they where yoloing it.
Wing Commander games were the main reason to upgrade your PC on in the early 90s :D So so good.
@@esaedvik Yup, it was the precursor to Crysis and set the stage for a lot of cinematic games that came thereafter.
Henlo.
Hehe hell yeah. OG Wing Commander was awesome. Hobbs' betrayal still cuts deep.
Silly guy, some you know this is a scam? You're not actually having fun (jk jk).
If I want to chill for an hour or 4 with SC, I load up on supplies and my Cyclone RC. I go to some moon and just drive....
Looking at the Bengal carrier from 2012 and compareing it to the SQ42 visuals in 2024 is crazy how far we came.
Wgaf about raytracing tho....
Honestly haven't watched your videos in a while, but I'm 100% back for more of this.
The scope did change and thank goodness.. we don't need another Starfield.
Hopefully you don't "need" any end product full stop.
@stephenwakeman3074 the last thing any mmo needs is an end product. An mmo at end product is a dead mmo. The big question is can they get their servers stable?
When I played SF for the first time, I realized Just how good SC is, even in it's current state.
Bought my Sabre Raven code for $50 on ebay while they were selling the Optane drives, was stunned when I looked up the price for Raven codes/accounts a few months ago.
Rub it in why don't you!! lol
Chris needs his 14th house and 2nd themed office. Keep backing him so he miss manages more money 😂
Fascinating video Lauren! I don't play the game but the premise is interesting. More of this or any Tasty content is always welcome.
Citizen Kate does some gameplay vids with loops. Star citizen has free flies all the time. You can try it for free. One just ended yesterday.
Well, most gameplay loops are tier 1 placeholders. And a lot of them are somewhat broken.
There are not many promised gameplay loops yet, such as exploration, data, digital warfare, passenger transport, touring, scientific, etc.
Probably the best way of learning how to do things in SC is to join others, SC is best in multiplayer. There are lots of small, local to you, orgs with regular players that can guide people. You also don't need the bigger ships, others have them and need crew.🚀
Bang on. I backed & have been following the project for ~8 years and feel pretty much the same.
Checked when I backed it: 18 Oct 2012. Money well spent lol
11:30 they are adding raytracing in the future, though whether or not any machine will be able to run that is another question XD
The showcased software raytracing at one point. So not having to rely on nVidia is a huge deal.
12 years later and still making amazing content!
Hey, I have that same AMD ship! Glad to know it is rare, because I was thinking of upgrading it. Thanks!
Great to hear from you, Lauren!
Hope the game will be completed and, indeed, be tasty!
I figure that my 15 year old son will be in his 60's by the time this releases
you are so funny

Very informative video. I also have a Mustang Omega. Keep it!! When the game releases (1.0), the value may increase of this ship. Tip...look at what people are selling theirs on Ebay as a reference.
Ah so nice to see you again.. and very happy holidays. For me the game looks beautiful but its just dead.. where are all the NPC
Agreed on this. SC also plays well with a controller, giving you 'dual sticks' on the cheap
Backer since 2016. Love this describing that you gave. It was certainly a good one ;)
New here. I'd come back for more Star Citizen shenanigans combined with your seemingly calm and methodical approach.
Great to hear from you. I find that Star Citizen has consistently made progress. This is what renews the faith for me.
Consistent. Snail-like process. Plus presumably you must have missed that time when they completely scrapped the game engine and starts again...
@@Penfolduk001 I'm curious when you think that was? They never scrapped the game engine... it has been consistently rewritten and improved upon.
Progress? I guess.. but I still stand by what I said 10 years ago.

I think, Star Citizen will be a hyper-realistic future space existence simulation.
Play it! I like the way you present your perspective
And Arena Commander will be too... you'll see.
Yep I am one of the people who upgraded my mustang to something else before I realized how rare it was.
I'm fortunately to own two of the Mustang Omegas, one even has lifetime Insurance (LTI).
Which vote? There was none.
Oh sweet! Didn't know you were making vids again, used to enjoy your PC reviews. Glad you're back. And covering Star Citizen as well! o7
Excellent video - would love more like this
Funny thing about performance is that it’s simply got very different requirements from other games.
I don't know but the tastiest channel on UA-cam is TastyPC
Hello.
Have a happy holidays TastyPC
For your interests I think you’d enjoy a visit to this game, but the technical headaches do remain. My best experience was running salvage, courier, and mercenary missions with my boyfriend in a cutlass black. We would have preferred my 315p but the whole 300 series has a jump bug where the ship and everything in it simply disappears if you’re not sitting in a chair, and that’s seriously frustrating.
One of the big events like siege or prison or jumptown is especially good for e teamwork you’re looking for, but finding a good community in this game is not effortless.
SC is LSD of in gaming. .
You might get good or bad trip and you keep coming back for that good trip.
yea i also bought a HOTAS back in 2015 just to play star citizen, lucky for me i bought the Thrustmasters Warthog used on ebay and actually sold it with profit 8 years later.
Tbh, the current scale of SC is prob beyond most other games already...
i guess this must be common here, but my god your voice is so pleasant to hear :)
Now on the video, interesting to point the graphics quality of a game is not set at any point, it is usually among the final touches the game receives, features like ray tracing is a example, and as it doesn't pretty much add anything to polygon count, mesh detail and model quality, it is pretty good that they are adding it by now, since if you put SC side by side with any game, you will see that it's models for weapons ships and even terrain and interiors, is matched by only a few games, and in only some assets class, humans shading and animation being the point where the game still needs to improve, but it is not that far from top tier class.
Society grows great when old men back Kickstarter games they will never see released.
Also, congrats - your 2024 goal was 12/12 you've managed 6/12, it's still worth you making content just remove the pressure on yourself and you will likely get out more videos naturally - also, make content on things you want to, then you will find it easier to make quicker content and easier content - you definitely have a place on YT, you've proved that after all these years 👍
Oh and Merry Christmas 🎄 and check out WC 3 and IV, enjoy!
I've been waiting 12 years to play Squadron 42!! I was an initial backer just for that! still waiting
Love the thumbnail 😂
It looks like a cool game and I would sure like to see more of your video's because I miss the early days when you made a lot of video's !!!!!!!!
I still HAVE that AMD card and that Mustang:) Fun little ship!
@tastypc... all these years I've followed you and finally
... im about to take the plunge.. and I just signed up to patreon...
If you disable it or give an exception you should see your GPU usage and FPS go up a bit.
hope you can do a tasty Pc build to be able to run the game at good frames in either 1440p or 4k.
i7 with 8 cores 16 threads or equivelent AMD processor and a 4060 or equivelent AMD card with 16 but reccomend 32gb ram.
I play it on a daily basis with my friends.
Different hdware comparison would be amazing!
Im one of the newer backers, play since 3 years, my radeon driver says i have over 1000 hours played it. and i must say its my favorite game. and it runs smooth. if somebody need tipps for more fps, i did some vids, but only for radeon users.
325a is a banger, good choice.
It is awesome that you are covering Star Citizen. Yes, I would love to see your analysis on the different hardware that works with SC.
SQ42 looks like it will be a lot of fun, when they finally release it they will be able to fully focus on Star Citizen I hope, also not every GPU can handle RT, so if they add it I hope it's a toggle, because most people can barely play the game as it is with standard raster..
I'd really like to play, however, I've moved away from Windows based platforms and gone Linux...until SC comes to Steam I'd have to faff to get it to run...
same
I loved playing freelancer with my dad when I was a kid, we just traded goods through several systems all day and bought better weapons, shields and ships, my dad would get the biggest cargo ship we could afford and my brother and I would get figher ships to shoot down the pirates on the route.
No engine has ever been made to do the things SC is doing except maybe UE
5 now with all the newest feature sets.
Star citizen is amazing. I love it.
I play it nearly daily :) so cool to see that you are a backer too.
For me, the game would be just screenhotting stuff 24/7 :D I already have some SC backgrounds for my PCs and I haven't even bought into the game yet.
Good Question. But I don't know many publishers ,save HelLo Games, who put as much effort into deveoping game after the launch as they did before it.
