Thanks for this! Decided to upgrade my stereo only to find a mess of wires held together with nothing more than tape surprised it never caused a short in the 2 years I've had this car.
I purchased a 4runner at carmax And the previous owner had installed an aftermarket system and I'm guessing when he sold it to carmax he took off the system and put the factory stereo back in and did a complete mickey mouse job. This is a great informative video .
Thank you. A while ago someone stole my radio when it was waiting to be worked on... right in the lot of the shop! Jerks cut the wire and I've been looking for a way to figure out what goes where. This helped a lot. Thank you!
Finally a video I was looking for.Thank you! Every other harness video is about plugging into the existing vehicle harness. That's all good and dandy but what about situations like mine, where there is no original harness but there are free hanging wires and I want to make my own harness. This video answered that question and it called a "reverse harness".Again, thank you!
Hi thomas thats a nice car , what you will need to do is install the new stereo and run the constant power and switched ign wires to the vehicles harness that comes from the key cylinder wew call it the ign harness in our profession, you will need to use a multi meter to determine which one of the wires in vehicles harness are those wires and tap into them, then you will need to ground the stereo to a bare metal part of the vehicle to complete the stereo circuit so it can turn on
I had issues trying to figure all the wires. Your video was very informative and I was able to get my stereo in without any problems, once I watched your video. Your awesome!!!!!
June 2020: Great informative video!!! The previous owner of my 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2dr XJ cut off the factory radio harness so, I had to hardwire a stereo that way. But now I’ll have rewire the cut oem stereo harness by going to the scrapyard, to cut off the harness out of another junked jeep. Will let you know how it goes. I currently have a Pioneer DEH-X6600BT that was hardwired installed, which I had to do myself last year in January 2019.
Update 6/10/22: It all worked & went well. All wires matched since it was oem. Bought a Jvc Bluetooth radio with the aftermarket radio harness adapter to retain the oem harness. Everything worked as they should. Thanks again
Thanks for sharing, I'll take your video as a reference when connecting my car sterio, Only one thing I would like to comment on, is when you cut the wires in the begging you cut them all as a bulk, and that may cause short as they are all in contact with metal part of the cutter at the same time, but better to cut them one by one.

Idea/suggestion. Instead of using a battery and wire to "pop" the speakers, I would get a cheap aux cable, cut it and strip it, then probe the speakers and check the sound. Would imagine it would be a pain pulling apart panels just to look at the speaker cones not to mention if you got enclosed tweeters
So I'm trying to install a double din radio on 98 Toyota Camry XLE. I had unfortunately cut off the factory harness. Now trying to match up wires but before that when I tried to test wires to see if current is passing through, not a single flicker on my light tester when touching the wire. First ever radio installation on my own just to be informed
My phone cuts out right when you are naming the order to test the wires. What's the order? And what setting on the multimeter? It only cut out for about 30 seconds.
what are those little things you're reattaching the wires with called?????? please help. i have the harness but it got cut i just need whatever those little adapters are called. please
you can find them at any autozone but they are expensive for how many you get .if you buy from eBay you will get like 5 times the amount of them for the same price .
+TheGiftedKJ32090 there is a blue wire with a white stripe on your aftermarket stereo did you connect it to the blue wire with white stripe on your vehicle specific harness you bought for your car
i have a power acustik pd 650 and it does not have a blue (w) wire just solid blue one. im also thinking maybe they connector harness might be wrong but it fits inside my factory radio harness.
then you will need to run new wire to each speaker that you will be powering from the new cd player, or you can tap into the speaker where the wiring goes into the door before the speaker but that can sometimes complicate things better off just running new wire .
I have an 82' toyota pickup, the wiring harness has been cut off and has no speakers and I've noticed the cables that are left of the harness are different (light green red stripes, blue red stripes) Do I just buy a replacement harness and try to match them??
You will have to do a rewire. I have a video on how to do it although it is somewhat technally difficult to do. But if you are good with a digital multimeter you should be okay. The video is called how to rewire a cut car stereo harness. That Tacoma has 2 plugs for the stereo, one of them has the power ground and 12 in turn on and the 2 front speakers and the other harness has the rear speakers wiring and a wire for the illuminated wire. Buying a replacement harness from the car audio manufacturer like Metra will have completly different colors on them so that won't work but you can maybe find a plug from the junk yard. I suggest using a multi meter and finding the power ground and ign wires from the factory wiring and connecting that Strait to the new stereo.
I have a 1995 Mazda and all the wires are cut like in the video. For the reverse harness do I buy it for that year of that car. If so for my radio do I still need a stereo kit??
my 2010 Dodge journey has a cut factory harness. im trying to rewire with the 71-6522 rev harness. all speakers leads are connected, but im left with an orange/white & white wire?, orange/gray wire? , yellow/red wire?
Thanks for the great vid... Question: I have 3 wires that react when testing for ground. Two of them go from 0.2 to 0.7 and one goes from 0.2 to 6.0 when I cycle the lights. Which one is my ground? Thanks!
Hey. Great video. It got me really far but after a few hours of the stereo working nicely, I pushed it further back bc it's not mounted with screws and it went out and now nothing that used to work with the key off will work now. What might have happened?
You say nothing will work with the key off? The stereo your saying right.. You most likely have a blown fuse check your in cavin fuse block and also your in engine bay fuse block and see what fuses you blew but make sure to crimp the lose wires better so they don't end up touching again. Let me know if it works again
+Adrian Witzil in the car stereo harness there usually is a Illuminated wire, that wire probably got shorted out. The stereo uses it to dim itself when you turn the lights on at night time. Check your wiring and make sure you check all fuses
if you have a smart phone pioneer stereos use a app from the phone that lets you control the stereo from your smart phone that would be really cool to use .
Thanks wasome info but hey I have a ford explorer 96 and they took the factory stereo and cut the factory harness off, but I found a harness from another ford explorer on a Junk yard do I rewire it by colors how it is or they go in another way? Thanks!!!
Look look to see if the colors match up. If it's from the same years you should be able to match them up by color. If your harness has the same colors as the replacement harness from the junk yard you should be okay.
Ok I’m having trouble my Chrysler only have 6 wires left and the after market harness has eight for speakers is it possible my negative wires are already grounded
there is a shroud that installers commoly use to install new stereo under dashes the part number is 99-9000 its made by a company called Metra you should be able to find that part on ebay , if i were you i would install the cd player in the glove compartment and use a remote to change the station or tracks that would look alot cleaner but you would still need to mount it to something and that shroud would also be okay to use ,
Now! After I confirmed that the audio was causing a short and draining my battery, I find out that my door speakers are the ones that are draining all the power! So I'm thinking on rewire both front speakers! Would be a good idea to do so????
ive never seen speakers drain power, i dont even think that is possible but who knows ive seen stranger things before . do you have any amps in the car? is the constant wire which is yellow split into any other wire
No I don't have any amps installed on my car! Just the stereo and speakers. And no, the yellow cable is not split into any other wire! But when I unplug the negative terminal and connected back to the battery, I can hear a pop up from the door speakers!!! Even if I disconnect the stereo!!!
Miguel R check something for me,see if the vehicles cut stereo harness has 2 wires joined together..it sounds like to me that the factory amplifier is draining the battery cause it is constantly on. what im thinking is the installer tied the vehicles contant wire to the factory amp turn on wire ...that would explain why you are getting a pop from the speakers even when the stereo is not connected .if you cant find 2 wires tied togethjer on the vehicle stereo connector side then try to locate the factory amplifier and see if the wiring has been modifed at all
connectedcaraudio and sorry i know you checked the stereo harness but check the vehciles factory wiring at the stereo ..not sure if i made it clear through the last message ..let me know how it goes .hopefully you can fix the issue
Ok I will do this today!! Also I was doing some research and I found a Web site where I can find the power distribution diagram for any specific car! So I found that diagram for my car and I already located the fuse and I'm going to follow the fuse power wire to see if there is any wrong connection! I also have the diagram for the grounds distribution! Do you think that I need to check for ground cables as well??? Thanks!!! :)
I mentioned Nissan because usually they don't have a ground wire but rather ground through the factory stereo antenna or metal brackets of the factory stereo. Your good using the aftermarket stereo to ground to vehicle chassis to complete the circuit. Also check out the12volt.com for factory stereo wiring diagrams they may have your vehicle diagram there
How do i know which harness to purchase? Its for my daughters 1994 Nissan Primera... The harness will take it from the cut factory wiring to an ISO plug wont it? Cheers
I'm not sure what harness is for your vehicle but I do know where you can find it. In the Google search look up Metra car audio, they are the ones who make all the harness and adapters for car stereos. Just call there support number and they can point you in the right direction

Does it matter wich reverse harness I buy? I messed up and cut the Harness on an 04 santa fe with the monsoon wiring and curious as to the reverse harness I need
You want to purchase the correct reverse harness, it will be less confusing when installing it. Some vehicle reverse harness have only 1 acc wire while some may have 3 while at the same time some may have none at all because they use database systems to communicate. What year is your vehicle?
It looks like your vehicle is the type where you have to tap into the acc at the fuse block to give the aftermarket stereo power to turn on. You will need a 70-2003 harness and a 71-2003-1 reverse harness and if you want to keep the chimes and the function where the stereo turns off when you open the door there is a separate module for that. Metra is the company that makes all these stereo kit and interface modules. Google Metra car audio and you will be able to get the parts, you can also find them on eBay for cheaper
I have 2 wires that are constant what do i do? 1 is at 11.14volts the other stays at 11.42volts. The 11.14volts drop to 4.25volts when i turn the key to the accessory position. Do you or anyone know what could be the problem?
what happens if their are some speakers that pop and some that dont? i.e. what if only my front right and front left speakers pop and not front left and front right?
I have a 2002 Pontiac sunfire and the factory harnesses has been cut do I have to take my dash bord apart to a put in a new harness I toke out my stock stereo and I pot in my newer sony CD car stereo in it was working fine and the radio fall then my dome light burnt out and now I'm kinda stompt I don't no there a few thing I think I blow out a fuse in the radio or I blow out my amplifier fuse and the light fuse to the dome light
You probably have a blown fuse in the vehicle check both inside cabin fuses and engine compartment fuses. Also sounds like you need a dash kit if your stereo is falling out. I suggest taking it to a shop to have them use the proper connectors and dash kit so it doesn’t happen again
Lol I did buy a dash kit it Sid it fits my car and it did but my stereo did not fit in it I think I mit have to take my dash apart to re harness it but I well buy a amplifier fuse and a newer stereo I hookt up my stereo to a car battery it was blown lol I was putting it in a 2002 Pontiac sunfire It's kind hard when I had my 1977 Pontiac lemons it was easy
my car flooded 2 years ago and ever since the audio in my car mutes without me turning on or off.? Can someone please help me fix this ? The audio comes back every time but I can't say when it will be back .. I want to know if I can fix this myself or is it something that I need to pay for please help!!!!
fahim black. i hope you get this message i have a 05 equinox also and im having trouble with the wires all so im been at this for two days. so did you ever get your fix email me dannyc5150@gmail.com
Where has this video been this whole time :) Just my case, previous owner hard wired the head unit and cut the old harness off. I have had no instrument panel lights for about 3 months, I got the 12v from the grey illumination wire when turning the switch on & off the volts go from 0 to 12 but when I test the brown dimmer wire i get nothing. Does this mean the headlight switch is faulty and if i replace it will it bring the panel lights back?
some vehicles do not have a dimmer wire .and i would check all the fuses in your car in the engine bay and also inside the car for blown fuses.vehicles have dimmers switches at the light switch but that doesent necessarily mean that the stereo factory wiring has it also. i think you have a blown fuse though for the panel lights
Beatriz Jodon okay on your factory stereo plug you should see two different harness or like a split in the harness . one of the splits will have all your rear speaker connectors and the other split will have all your power and front speakers. what color were the wires that you found that were constant?
I need help with a 1999 Cadillac deville I want to keep the factory head unit where it is and connect a aftermarket one under it run all new wires to all new componet speakers to a four channel amp and 4 subwoofers to a mono amp
I have a 99 chevy silverado 1500 and it has more wires than this. It has a violet and white wire (turns any wire on when it touches), a green and white wire (don't what it's used for) and two extra dark green wires(don't know the use for these either). Problem is my meters act weird when I start the truck, but still work normal... but then my radio and dash lights cut off when I turn it up loud. It seems like I've tried every single wire combination there is and it still won't act normal. Someone please help.
Depends on vehicle.... But anywhere from 50 to 100.00, if your vehicle is older pre databus style it will be costing less but newer vehicles are more complex and will cost more
Ok. I can make some awesome instrumentals on Fl Studios, and even produce my own tracks but this is like rocket science to me and I am beyond confused. Screw this..... I'll just ask one of my friends that knows what their doing. lol thanks anyways for the vid
By far the most thorough, and informative video for this cause. I couldn't have done it without you. Thanks!

To find ground you still need the black probe grounded ? And set to ohms? To find ground ?
Professional and straight to the point. Fantastic video
This really helped I can't believe I attempted this without multimeter using just guess work
this video needs a double like button, this is truly amazing. thanks for the video
Thanks for sharing, I'll take your video as a reference when connecting my car sterio,

Watched 10000 videos , only one that actually helped thanks !
Glad i was able to help
And there was me thinking you just had to match up the colours. I guess i’ll be taking the car to the shop then...
Or you can look up the pin out of your current head unit or look up the wires color code of your car by using the build year, make and model.

Thanks, now I have some idea of how to find the right wire to power the power outlet, I am putting in the truck.
Can the constant wire and the ignition wires be the same in the truck?
Very well done, really helped
What kind of shop would i go to for this kind of problem?
Thanks dude. You rock the house
Glad to help
My phone cuts out right when you are naming the order to test the wires. What's the order? And what setting on the multimeter? It only cut out for about 30 seconds.
So the only way to test positive and negative on speakers wire is visually?
Great video mate! Explained beautifully, now I'm confident
Thank you legend
Why is the continuous current wire important to be connected?
It retains memory like clock and eq setting stereo won’t power on without it

My multimeter doesn’t have a clip. The black and red are like pens. How do I ground it?
would it be possible to pull the pins from the factory connector if it was cut
Is it possible to just use a wiring diagram that's in the manual for my car? The connection harness should have some kind of diagram as well correct?

Thank you so much for all the help!!!!

Where has this video been this whole time :)
Just my case, previous owner hard wired the head unit and cut the old harness off.
My vehicle has way more wires than that and I found 2 wires that are 12v constant. How do I figure out which to use?
do you have a gm vehicle?
I have a 1997 nissan pathfinder
Beatriz Jodon okay on your factory stereo plug you should see two different harness or like a split in the harness . one of the splits will have all your rear speaker connectors and the other split will have all your power and front speakers. what color were the wires that you found that were constant?
connectedcaraudio
You should make a vid installing a harness from scratch to the fuse box, battery etc...

Great Video! Thanks!
Hi I have a 2002yukon and it has the harness cut of and Mi dashboard light don't com on and the ac com's on

good explained video thank you
What do I need to do this on a 06 colbalt ls
Can someone say what do I do with the black(negative) cable on the meter?
what would this cost if done by a professional?
Depends on vehicle.... But anywhere from 50 to 100.00, if your vehicle is older pre databus style it will be costing less but newer vehicles are more complex and will cost more
cant i just solder that adapter that comes with the stereo on to the wires on my harness
+Twizums yes you can also do that .if you change out stereo again you will have to resolder again though
connectedcaraudio thanks heaps :)
connectedcaraudio where to buy this type of harness from
You don't show how to use the multimeter. Thankfully I do but, if some one is a beginner they have no clue.
What about the memory wire on a stereo
The memory wire is the constant 12 wire mentioned in the video
Hey I test for my ground and found multiple ground wires
Yes man thank you
We have two wires which are constant at twelve. There is no wire that will switch off with the ignition. Hmm...
Ok. I can make some awesome instrumentals on Fl Studios, and even produce my own tracks but this is like rocket science to me and I am beyond confused. Screw this..... I'll just ask one of my friends that knows what their doing. lol thanks anyways for the vid
thanks
Bsst video in this category.
Thwart if you don't have a multimeter
Nice video, but for gods sake, can't you do it properly and tin the wires? Instead of using these cheap connectors.
Still need help! :(
If you scion xb 2012 good luck
