This is the best by far the clearest explanation and illustration on how to wire a head unit. Also, very importantly he talks about wire neatness and safety measures/practices when handling sodering. I have learned so much. Keep up the good work !!! Thanks !!
Working on a Radio right now. I'm soldering all the wires and using Heat-shrink tubing of course. I didn't think of doing it some other way. There is a lot of wires and a number of plugs. Between being just a new car, to Steering wheel controls, Backup camera, etc. Lots of wires to solder. Most of the wires the colors match, but some didn't. So it's looking at both wires listings in the books for each device to connect it all correct.
Wow, this video definitely gave me motivation to try and solder my harnesses. I like that you do things the right way, and take the extra few minutes to clean it up. It looks really professional and I can tell your quality is top notch. Keep it up, and thanks for the video!
If you have an older model car and you're just hooking up your receiver to the speakers and power. All you need to do is buy a specific harness adapter wiring loom for your specific radio to your specific make of car. This connects your radio straight to the harness connector in the dash and they only go for like $15. There is no soldering or cramping or all that stuff.
I really like the way you do things the actual right way and your videos are extremely helpful for me and for many others with that said thanks and have a great day.
Thank you thats exactly what i needed to know. Keep up the great videos and try explaining how to run the separate speaker wire from amp to speakers. and the power to subwoofers and amp.
Thank you. It was either 1/8" or 3/16". I usually purchase a NTE HS-AAST-9 which is an assortment of sizes. Google that part# and you should get a few hits.
Hi, I have the +/- illumination wires coming out of my factory stereo adapter but no wires to connect them into the harness for my new after market stereo. Can I splice them onto the red ignition wire or how could I hook them up so that the radio still dims when headlights are on? I have an 02 ford expedition. Thank you!
If there is no plug for the radio you will have to use a voltmeter to locate a 12V switched wire (comes on with the ignition/key switch), a 12V full time power wire, and a ground wire to get power. You will have to cut and splice. Then either find the speaker wires, or run new wires directly to the speakers. It is a little more challenging when you do not have the OEM power connector. Be careful and be safe.

Thanks for the vid! The tip about "tinning" the wires was a big help for me. Nice work.
Great video. Finally a good job done on a harness. Tks subscribed.
I'm from Philly and didn't realize I had an accent until I moved away. I can always spot it now.

Nice video, but how do you deal with having to hook up three or so ground wires?
Great explanation and demonstration. You have the heart of a teacher!
Great job explaining all the details. Many videos don't do that.

+brad61496 this is a newer version of the soldering iron he is using: www.adafruit.com/product/1204
great video thanks Jim. What type of soldering station do you employ for your videos?
+j jones Hakko FX888
where can i get a Sardering iron?
+Jordan A Haha- you makin fun of my Philly accent?!?!
What are the consequences of skipping the soldering part and moving straight to just heat shrinking the wires?
a bad conection that wont last long or be very strong.

+Jenny Brown a dimmer wire is used to turn down the light on the radio. that is all. so connecting it to the red wire would be not a good idea.
hah, I figured it was a bad idea. I was just hoping there was some way I could make the dimming work. maybe putting a switch on the dash separately
yeah thatsa better idea :)
Good video, very tidy work
I called it neat job...thanks Jim
Im trying to install a cd player in my 77chinook, theres a shit load of wires plugged into this and that, no harness, ?? Im lost?
