    11 episodes ago, this guy had just failed to conquer Earth.
    Now, he's trying to save all of existence because he wants his friends back.
    What an insane character arc.

    • @AngeloBarovierSD
      @AngeloBarovierSD 11 місяців тому +14

      And they made it sane every step of the way! This episode was just … sublime.
      Really felt like an oasis (or oases) of normal, amid a torrent of crazy. Science/Fiction, indeed.

    • @pali1d
      @pali1d 11 місяців тому +5

      @@AngeloBarovierSDOh, fully agreed. It's an insane character arc in terms of how far he's come with relatively so little screen time - but it's 100% believable because of the quality of the writing and acting along with what we've learned about Loki in the rest of the MCU. He's always been a person who defined himself in relation to others, usually to the detriment of all involved - but now, as in Ragnarok and Infinity War, we're seeing a Loki who has learned to do so in a positive way.
      He's still the God of Mischief, but he's become so much more.

    • @THG-3141
      @THG-3141 11 місяців тому +1

      @@pali1dit's looking more like he may no longer be the God of Mischief. He's becoming the God of Stories. (A seriously OP version of him from the comics). Basically if he writes down "and then you were aborted" you would simply not exist. You were never born, you never existed, the universe itself never considered you as an idea.
      And if we think about the heavy emphasis this season has put on people's stories, it feels like it lines up.

  • @TheIllerX
    @TheIllerX 11 місяців тому +44

    I like that Loki is not only the God of mischief, but also the God of stories.
    This fits perfectly with him being able to control all the stories/timelines here.

    Casey as "Frank" on Alcatraz in 1962... there was a real-life Frank who actually did escape from Alcatraz in 1962.

  • @DJHolte
    @DJHolte 11 місяців тому +35

    This episode highlights what a great actor Eugene Cordero is. Casey is innocent, brilliant, approachable -- yet Frank is a hardened criminal, with all that comes with that. And he's able to portray those two wildly different characters without having to say a word -- just through his face and his body language.

    • @tetsuoishiki4677
      @tetsuoishiki4677 11 місяців тому +7

      Is he Frank Morris? Supposedly he was one of three men who escaped from Alcatraz. Clint Eastwood played him in that movie.

    • @loneassassin1015
      @loneassassin1015 11 місяців тому +2

      @@tetsuoishiki4677yes. IIRC Frank and the other escapees were never found and despite being listed as wanted to this day it is widely assumed their boat capsized and they drowned. In the episode we see Morris and the others successfully escape, which as a result caused the branched timeline and led to him being taken in by the TVA and become Casey after mind-wiping him

      Book series
      Radio drama
      80s tv series
      Movie.
      Each has different plots, but the same general thing with same named characters (but they have different personalities)
      My favourite is the Radio drama... followed by 80s tv (my introduction), then the books, and last the movie.

      You should. But you should also read the books or listen to them, as there is a great audio book version narrated by Stephen Fry, or at least the first one as there are 5 books in the "*trilogy."
      *he only intended to write three books, or to stop after the third one, his publisher and editor coaxed two more out of him.
      For being as great a writer as he was, he had to be forced. Famously being locked inside once and forced to complete some pages at one point.

    Casey's character is a real-life guy-- he was played by Clint Eastwood in "Escape from Alacatraz." Note: they give people's name in the End Credits, so for example Owen Wilson is listed as 'Don,' not as Moebius.

    Sylvie's variant timeline was pruned when she was a little girl, because the sacred timeline dictates that Loki should be a "male" and "evil/bad", so there was no variant timeline for her to be returned to (not to mention the fact that her aging as an Asgardian might mean her real timeline might have been pruned a thousand or more years ago). The closest thing was her "McDonald's" timeline, where she was trying to establish a "life", so she was returned to that one.
    Her memories might be a little trickier, since she has no lifetime established there, to be restored. Possessing He Who Remains TemPad might also be keeping her full memory intact, since He Who Remains would probably have some sort of built-in protection that allowed him to always remember how things are "supposed" to happen, which would be one of the reasons why his was different from the normal TVA ones.

    • @jaybennet4491
      @jaybennet4491 11 місяців тому +2

      Sylvie's nexus event wasn't being female. If that had been the case, she'd have been pruned at birth. It's most likely that she began showing inclinations to being good that got her pruned. Any Loki in the sacred timeline must be mischievous, must fail at taking over New York, must die to Thanos. It doesn't matter whether they're male, female, or alligator, as long as they follow the script for being a Loki, they'll be fine

    Frank Morris escaped from Alcatraz in 1962 with two other inmates. They fooled the guards by leaving behind paper mache dummies in their beds that fooled the night guards, crept through an unguarded access hallway behind the wall of their cells and up to the roof, and got off the island with an improvised raft. Bits and pieces of the raft and their improvised life-vests washed up on the shore the next morning. It's generally believed that the three men drowned.
    Casey is a variant of an actual historical figure!

    It actually makes sense. He can’t travel to something that doesn’t exist… and yet he does. This establishes that our ‘knowns’ don’t take that reality into account and therefore it may be possible beyond our knowns..

    Loki, God of Stories, lets go!!!
    Also, wouldnt all these be branched timelines? Since the sacred timeline imploded on itself?
    Also Loki was ripped from time when Mobius extracted him in episode 1, which IMO makes him outside of time.

    • @Rascool69
      @Rascool69 11 місяців тому

      Yes. That's what I believe too. I think becuz he & Sylvie were in the void, it left them immune to mind erasure. I also think Loki is travelling backwards to times before the timelines were falling apart. That's why Sylvie & O.B.'s timelines spaghetti-fied

    I work nights and have been waiting all night for your reaction. I'm surprised it took so long lol. I guess normal people sleep at night. In real life, three men escaped Alcatraz in 1962. One of the three was named Frank Morris. That's who Casey is. All three men were never heard from again. Frank Morris was declared dead in 2008. I think it's cool that Casey plays Frank because rather than being dead Frank aka Casey went to the TVA, that's why he was never heard from again.

    When O.B. is telling Loki that he already did something impossible, so therefore doing another identically impossible thing should be possible...what he means is that they're two infinities cancelling each other out.
    It's...like with your noise-cancelling headphones. They operate through something called wave interference. Throw two waves of the same type, at the same modulation, but exactly opposite frequencies, directly at each other...and they basically shut each other down. That generally only works with waves propagating through a medium like a gas, solid, liquid, plasma, or other form of material. With things like light, radio waves, and other phenomena, it doesn't really apply.
    But, since this is all bullshit anyway, the implication here is that two identical collapsing waveforms (quantum mechanics terminology for "any given thing that happens") in direct opposition to one another...should cancel out. Meaning that something that should've been impossible, is possible.
    It's super fast and loose here, and an extreme oversimplification...because nothing anywhere in this show is how anything works at all...ever. But, for the story, it's internally consistent, and the plot overall and the characters are worth a little bullshit tolerance.

    19:35 Since the original sacred timeline Loki died in 2018 Infinity War, he could go to ''present-day'' New Asguard, where at least he knows people. Brunnhilde (Valkerie), maybe Thor. With all the years that passed since Ragnarok and IW, it wouldn't really disrupt anything. It might be a bit awkward to explain, but him dying and coming isn't unprecedented.

      Except, Loki might not know these things since he was only shown "his life story" in the start of Season 1, which ended with his death to Thanos in Infinity War.

    If you want more great Tom Hiddleston acting then you should check out the movie Crimson Peak. Directed by Guillermo Del Toro it's a beautifully shot movie and Tom Hiddleston is great in it.

    I may have missed this in the discussion, but what did folks think about Loki's "I'll gut you like a fish Casey" line from ep.1/season 1 & the line from Casey/Frank's escape: "if they catch us theyre going to gut us like fish"?
    Not a coincidence, right?

    Another idea. What if he “rewrites the story” back to being on the Asgardian ship before Thanos attacks, or even wilder, back to the point where he uses the Tesseract to escape the Avengers, and then becomes a good guy. Resets the entire MCU?? 🤔

    The next & final episode drops the same day The Marvels does. And I am beginning to think this was intentional and not just a fluke of scheduling. I think the events of this season will tie directly into the Incursions rumored to be happening in The Marvels.

    I'm guessing there's a Kang variant manipulating things in the background. Loki was time-slipping to specific places and times, wasn't just a glitching thing. There was a purpose. Does he save Victor Timely and Timely becomes Kang?

    Lol I was just thinking about season one and this is the new one. The idea of a mobius strip,ouroboros, the concept of imagination (science and fantasy). In the first season Sylvia was making/reviving the threads or reconstruct things. The timeline itself is isolated and in a constant repeated flux kinda like those fun toys you pull apart and expand, then retract and it shrinks. That’s maybe how that timeline is always isolated from the other versions/dimensions/timelines.

    This was easily the best episode this season. There are still a buttload of problems with it but this felt like what the plot should have been from ep 2. B-15 still is given next to nothing to do in any scene except look concerned or confused. I still feel Slyive doesn't take enough accountability for her actions. She literally started the countdown to the end of reality, acted like it wasn't her fault, hid in a McDonalds and called Loki an asshole for trying to prevent it. Like i get she wants to be free to live a normal life but she doomed reality and acts like she didn't. I have read people say that she doesn't think she caused it and that's why. But the problem there is the writing because Loki never clearly laid out the fact that reality is ending because of her actions so we never got a chance for her to deny or accept that. I dunno it bugs me. And yeah, called it with the reset button. I'm worried Marvel is falling into the classic sci-fi trap of time-travel fixes. Endgame went to such great lengths to stress you couldn't just go back and undo mistakes because the writers for that knew that the second you introduce that all narrative stakes are gone. And that's what has happened here. Because of the reset button that is Loki's time-slipping who cares if Victor Timely got vapourized? Just go back to when he didn't. Who cares if reality ends? Just go back before it does and stop it. No death is permanent, no issue is unsolvable if you have infinite time to fix it. One left then i think i'm going to take a break from Marvel for a while.
    Glad you are still having a good time with it though, best reactions on youtube as always :)

    Another reactor--sorry, I'm seeing other reactors (we never agreed we were exclusive, okay?)--noted that Casey makes sense because in the TVA is kinda klepto, like he has all those infinity stones in his desk for no real reason. And I think we've seen him take things somewhere else, too.

      Yeah read that too. Even before E5 aired, people who read that were saying how can an episode giving us all this character development be considered as just filler. Then after it aired, many, if not most, we're calling it a banger. I like that people appreciate the various character arcs. Plus there was so much growth and awareness for Loki AND he got a new ability. The suspense factor shot way up at the end. These Loki seasons need to be 8 - 10 episodes long, not 6.
