7000 you can power in any region with that power supply, you can also buy a European 7000 Slim PS2 and it will work safely on the US power grid. Only the 7000 models are universal for different regions power.

Also some people just like the original fat PS2 because of its hard drive tray and disc drive that pops out. That makes total sense. I like the slim a little more just because it looks cool, should be more reliable and takes up very little space.

One downside is it's prone to overheating and the MechaCon crash that damages drive mechanisms and fries up the laser after attempts to read unofficial or scratched up disks. If reliability in playing games off disks is heavily important, then the SCPH-9000x model from 2008 is the first choice (SCPH-7700x model from 2006 and SCPH-7900x model from 2007 are fairly decent as well). @@Brungemunchi my point is the SCPH-9000x series slim models are one of the most reliable models for being able to insert your disk (CDs and DVDs) and play your games without having to worry about when the laser reading the disk is going to burn out and die. SCPH-9000x has a solid reputation as one of the most reliable models you can get.
The PS2 70000 series was the last to have the MIPS R3000 there for PS1 backwards compatibility, it's not full hardware as there's no GTE but it has everything else The 75000 series and later replaced this with a different chip that's pure emulation and that introduced some compatibility issues with a small number of PS1 and even PS2 games. If you also hate yourself the 70000 series has a truncated network adaptor in it so if you're comfortable with soldering in 40 wires you can gain back the IDE HDD support
I have a 90001 myself i had a 70001 before When ever i put a game in it u could hear the lid buzzing I tightened it and everything then I returned it and got the 90001 and i love it been thinking of doing a clear shell swap on mine
The best version is the 70012. It has original PS1 hardware and two internet ports provided. 1 for landline (useless I know but its included) and the 2nd with an ethernet port. The rest of the other were just stripped out and butchered

SCPH-7900x PS2 slims don't scratch disks since the ribbon cable is mounted with sturdy plastic material instead of adhesive glue like the other slims (SCPH-700xx, SCPH-7500x, SCPH-7700x, and SCPH-9000x)
Initial scratches from this problem are just superficial and won't destroy the data on the disk, as long as you check your disks every now and then your fine. As soon as you start to see it(it will be a scratch that's perfectly circular around the disk) stop using that ps2 and either change the ribbon cable out or buy another ps2. Plus depending on how/where the bending starts to occur it might miss your disk entirely and you won't have the issue.
I had the 9000 but it's mcboot broke (aka the memory card) and the cd reader broke aswell and then my mom threw the dang controllers oblivious to its worth nowdays
bro i have the 7000 slim passed down from my sisters , I have been using it a lot more recently just because i found some of my old ps2 games i bought for it , and i have been playing gta san andreas , it had the laser reading issue but i did every youtube video imaginable and none worked , my solution was i was so fed up thinking i was gonna have to buy another so i slammed the disk tray down and punched it and i’m not even joking on everything , it fixed from me punching and slamming it and it has been perfect thankfully since 😅😂😂

The 700xx are the ultimate version, they have all thr ps1 components inside, so you get 100% compatibility with ps1, and sony left out IDE circuitry inside, if youre skilled you can solder 39 wires in various places on the IDE circuit you could add a micro SD to the 700xx and play games trough HD like you would on a FAT ps2, you dont even need to trim the case for this mod if youre skilled enough
PS2s are growing in value monthly :-) it's great to see them valued how they should be. I remember back in the day Nintendo stuff held its value way more, and that is still the case but Sony stuff is catching up. I believe eventually they will be pretty close.

Sony never fixed the laser issue I had to keep opening and closing the lid so it would read blue CD games, every time I would pop in a game say like wrath of cortex it wouldn't read it the first time the laser would stop until I kept closing and opening lid so many times. I hated that version so much and my phat model doesn't have that issue it reads the games just fine so I'll stick with the original ps2 model

I'll probably say 7000, because of the Free McBoot memory card. I only have the 3000, which still works with the card, but using those OPLs to play games on USB or HDD is impossible, due to not supported on PS2 3000s. But I do remembered few days ago that my console rarely successful of me playing a game on USB, which is Def Jam Vendetta.

@McDonald's The fat ones use to be superior because of the hard drive tray. Now with SD card support there is no real reason to say the fat one is better, the disk drive it's more likely to fail and the Slims don't run as hot so they generally last longer with better performance.

I've left my 70001 on for obscene amounts of time and it has never overheated (like up to 17 hours)

The fat ones use to be superior because of the hard drive tray. Now with SD card support there is no real reason to say the fat one is better, the disk drive it's more likely to fail and the Slims don't run as hot so they generally last longer with better performance.
I can see why you would like it more. I prefer the novelty of having such a small thin console over a hard drive tray. What other advantages would you say are in the fat model?

@McDonald's I see, I wonder if that's just bad luck? The cpu core of the Slim PS2 is 33 Megahertz faster. also I know people with disc tray problems. that's the main draw to the slim for me. Also I don't use the slow usb ports on the ps2.. memory card SD is fast enough to run games... but hey, "Some people say cucumbers taste better picked."
