    This is a video I've wanted to make for ages! I hope it helps you get the best out of your PS2!
    A point I did not make in the video was the flicker filter settings which some games called it anti aliasing!
    This will put a blur or bilinear filter on the screen & it will reduce image sharpness! If the game looks blurrier than normal, check the options in the game you are playing to see if this feature is turned on! Turn it off & the image will look sharper!
    I've also seen it dubbed as soft (flicker filter on) or sharp (flicker filter off) Silent Hill 3 & Tekken 5 are examples of this! The feature might be hidden as it is in Silent Hill 3!
    Hope this helps improve your PS2 video output!

    An awesome video mate 😄👍👍 I very recently started using a PS2 with official Sony PS3 era Component cable for the first time ever and the difference between that and the standardised Composite cable is definitely a major step up in terms of overall picture clarity and quality. 🎮📀

      It seems a lot of people have still stuck with Composite after all these years so, videos like this need to be made so those who simply do not know can see you can indeed improve video quality on older consoles :)

    For me the best option is undoubtedly RGB on CRT, that's where the PS2 shines, honestly I've never been interested in upscalers because you might as well use an emulator if you want to go up in resolution at 0 cost. Another option I have had the opportunity to test in recent years is the VGA output of the PS2, but which is limited by the low compatibility of games (officially it can only be used with the Linux Kit) and by finding a CRT monitor - I don't take LCDs into consideration 😆- that is compatible with the RGsB signal. I modified a PS2 to have an RGBHV signal when in VGA mode to be able to use it with my monitor and it's simply beautiful! 😍

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay
      @TheAffroShowGameplay  2 місяці тому +1

      I love emulation & I do enjoy my OSSC upscaler, it is now vital because new tvs no longer have analogue inputs & without the upscaler I couldn't play my real hardware :)
      I have heard about the VGA on PS2 but those kits are so rare & only found a listing once on Ebay xD
      I personally love my 4K display with the OSSC because the upscaler helps the games to look good & it is my first time experiencing 480p supported games :)
      Ultimately this is my opinion however, because your CRT supports RGB, the image must be amazing! Definitely well ahead of Composite!

      If the game doesn't utilise 480p Via RGB or Component, S-Video is a good way to play PS1 or PS2 games on the PS2 :) I like using it but it is difficult when my OSSC doesn't have an S-Video port so I always use RGB :)

    There is definitely alot of mileage to be found from forcing 480p or1080i on games through either Xploder HDTV Player or GS Mode Selector. I would advise doing that, and pairing up the system with a high quality video scaler (i.e. Mike Chi's RetroTink 5X Pro), since that'll give you additional picture control, including further scaling options, besides other niceties like scanlines and masks.

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay
      @TheAffroShowGameplay  2 місяці тому

      Don't forget most people will never do these things unlike us & sadly the Tink 5x is very expensive so the OSSC I use is a worthwhile alternative:)
      GS mode selector is great when it works & I know it was updated a few years ago but it's not an absolute fix :) Also there's still not much choice on the PAL games that don't support 60hz, GS mode selector still only offers 576p for PAL 50hz titles, bit limiting!

    Which one of these cable options would you prefer for recording PS2 gameplay? Also which one(s) work best together with capture cards, like the one from Elgato? Thank you!

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay
      @TheAffroShowGameplay  2 місяці тому

      I personally own an Elgato HD60s Plus, which all the gameplay footage from the OSSC was recorded onto :)
      The other upscaler was an Retroscaler 2x, used when I showed off S-Video & Composite:)
      In terms of video quality from the PS2, RGB SCART or Component are the best although S-Video is a good shout as well :)
      If a game has 480p support, using Component or RGB SCART with an RGsB supported upscaler (Like OSSC) or display will work nicely:)
      After that, the upscaler you use will be a factor if you need one, like myself as I have no analogue inputs on my TV or displays :)
      A good starting one would be the Retrotink 2x or the Retroscaler x2, a knock off product :)
      The OSSC I use is more expensive but a fantastic upscaler that can upres the lower resolution output by quite a bit :)
      Hope this helps! Also, I highly recommend using OBS for recording as it is flexible & can see many odd resolutions outputs unlike Elgato's own software!

    I've got pretty much every cable possible for the PS2! I bought an S-Video cable back in the early 2000's (can't remember where from, but I don't think I imported it and it was way before Amazon was a thing here, so don't know how I got one). On a CRT it really is the best option, it made the games really come to life. Don't know what it'd be like on a HDTV as I don't think I have one on any of the telly's in the house, might check the Bravia later if I remember. Official Sony component works well enough on my 32" upstairs TV, but I expect it'd break down on the bigger one downstairs. I did buy a kit some years ago that has a component set (didn't need it!) and some DVD that was supposed to upscale the picture, but that was useless. Still, now I have two component cables! I don't know if we'll ever really get to a point where PS2 looks as good on HDTV as it did on CRT.

      A lot of people seem to have S-Video cables, which is very interesting! From the UK, this cable was not common & Composite or SCART were our dominant cable types :)
      A lot of people seem keen on CRT & I'm lucky to have the OSSC upscaler which helps my retro games remain nice on even 4K displays but I do understand why many people say CRTs are best :)
      I'll always prefer HDTVs but that's just me :)

My other systems rgb scart cables through a retrotink 2x scart to modern tv, flawless. Set up the ps2 the same way and theres some minor flickering top and bottom of image. Grr. You could do this, but this means your monitor has to deinterlace 480i/576i for most PS2 games & if it can, the experience using a good component cable should work :)

      If it's a TV the display will automatically do it as it has one built in :)
      As for monitors I assume the same thing would happen but if not, you'd either need to use software like OBS which has several options (Yadif 2x I'd recommend or Retro which is bob deinterlacing) :)
      Or perhaps video players like QuickTime which can double as video input solutions might have this too although OBS is more flexible :)

    Hello sir but i have to disagree with you, you are forgetting about how dithering is being used on PS2. I think when the game is running on 480p, the color of the game shows the dithering. PS2 is designed to play on SDTV 480i with composite cable so it can hide the dithering effect in the game. Pumping resolution on PS2 is not the best solution to it, because it will show more the dithering color on PS2. Second things are the jaggies resolution when you do upscaling or pumping the resolution it's still shown. The blurriness on Composite cable is the anti-aliasing effect designed for PS2. So, I think assuming the Composite cable is worst is a bit misconception too.

    • @TheAffroShowGameplay
      @TheAffroShowGameplay  17 днів тому +1

      While I respect your opinion & I do understand why many, many people think this, I have to disagree back :)
      First off, if this is the case, why did game developers or Sony bother making all the effort to make the PS2 support 480p or all these other cables?
      While dithering & jaggies are common on PS2, even 480i games had dithering sometimes (Colin McRae Rally 04 had loads).
      Also, I recently went to a games festival in the UK & they had CRT's running RGB SCART & guess what I saw on them when playing PS2 games... Yes, dithering xD
      I feel most people are so accustomed to Composite on a CRT when playing PS2 that everyone assumes it is the only way when it isn't, not even in the CRT world:)
      Ultimately, we can decide & choose how we want our games to look & if this is your preference, fair enough but this is not for everyone, especially not me & never has been, not even when this was the norm back in the 2000s!

I Noticed that blurriness image from composite cable is not noticeable and its crisp enough in my eyes when it's played on consumer CRT TV. When i plug on Flat TV the AV Cable is indeed the worst output compared to other.

      @sanggakurnia I do understand & thank you:)
      On a CRT Composite is workable but I always loved RGB SCART & always will but I hope you are enjoying the experience, that's the most important thing :)

      As mentioned in the video, S-Video is not affected by the RGB or Component settings, only RGB SCART Cables or Component cables get affected :)
