I'm glad there seems to be a lot of new stuff coming out for the PS2 these days! Like others, I'm still really hoping for an ODE style solution, as I still find the software preparation side of things extremely antiquated on PS2. Even mx2sio/mx4sio have been *quite* flaky for me in the past, despite modern improvements. Here's hoping, I suppose!
Yes I had a ton of problems with mx4sio , I would not recommend it. Using the harddrive or the ethernet is an OK solution for the PS2 but an OSD would be great.
Hopefully a PS2 ODE does happen at some point. OPL is great, but even nowadays with an HDD the compatibility still isn't perfect. It'd also likely allow for PS1 playback since the main reason PS1 games can't be played from the HDD is because the PS1 hardware is used for the I/O when they aren't being used for games.
It was scary, but easier than I thought. The hack saw allowed for more control in my opinion. Getting the cut started would be the most difficult part.
You gotta see Wii board trim mods, the absurdity of the cuts and all the work done is impressive. I'm not a fan of board trimming frankly, but still, I strongly admire the work people put into knowing the console's board to the point of such a task being possible.

@@tordenninja1773 From what I can remember the disc ejection button sticks out on the 79003 boards and doesn't fit inside the 3D printed case specified in this video. Hope that helps
With how much people are putting effort into modding these days, I really hope that we get a 79000 series full digital out mod at some point, by that I mean tapping straight into the board's digital video out (if the combined EE+GS+RAM chip doesn't do DAC work now...) before it goes to the digital-analog conversion. That would mean perfect HDMI output for PS2s, with the portable-friendly 79000 series (probably similar work on the 90000 series) boards. I would work on a PS2 portable project myself if that ends up happening.
17:17 I think its not because of the brand, maybe will be because of the version, the samsung one is a sdhc card, and the other one is a sdxc card, its like the USB 2.0 and 3.0

It's totally something that I and others could figure out, but it's just a friendly tip for future videos. I loved this rebuild(?)/mod, I've never had a go at home console other than portables such as Gameboys, looks fun.
Love this mod, it's really interesting to see just how small this console can get. I literally had this exact idea, but for a phat PS2 (since that's what I have). obviously it will be a bit bigger but I think it would still be interesting to see how small you can make the OG without the drive bay and internal PSU.
Now make it powered with USB-C (which I am sure you actually can with a barrel adapter!) and somehow add HDMI to it and it would be a complete package. I also like the fact the RJ45 is preserved, allowing you to also just boot games via network through OPL. This is such a cool mod
Blindness is the worst sensory disability imo, shit sucks man. But hey, if you can play PS2 you can probably build, albeit not like this with the trimming.
Not sure if Voultar would build this one, but he's probably the most reputable modder out there. Also, you could consider getting one of those big screen microscopes? Normally people invest in them for tiny stuff, but if this is too tiny for you then, that might be an option too could consider.

Another thing about the slim PS2 boards. They still have IDE interface like that phat models. You can wire up an IDE to SD card into them instead of having to use a memory card slot.

That said, it’s a damn fine mod.
Regarding what you stated at 16:00 - I would actually have to disagree for a few reasons, as shown below: 1) When being kitted out as shown, the SIO mod will forego the weakness of having optically-based media - You don't need to worry about discs getting scratched, disc rot, failure of the laser diode, and drive motor failure, or if using this in a portable environment such as in a vehicle/RV, disc skipping during loads due to rough terrain while at the same time maintaining access to both memory card slots. 2) The removal of the optical drive means that the unit itself is actually more power efficient and will allow the power supply to operate (albeit marginally) cooler. 3) it's further reduction in size is more conducive to sitting it in smaller areas where even the slim ps2 would have otherwise taken up too much space. 4) you don't need to worry about keeping a library of discs laying around when traveling with it. Even if you must use one SD card per game, it would take many, many microSD cards to occupy the same physical space taken up by a single dvd disc.

Great video Tito. You once again knocked it out of the park with this one. While not the most technical you have done, it is the first of it's kind and you still format and explain everything in such a way anyone can do this with ease. Most of what I have learned has been by you, Retro Future, and Mr. Mario. I to would like to see this with an internal HDMI mod. A way to retain that second USB port would be nice to.
Absolutely beautiful, I can't wait for the future of the PS2 going forward, as PS1/Saturn/Dreamcast all have ODE's available now, with optional HD output that looks and plays great. As a diehard PS1/PS2 collector, I'd say that the PS2 is the last of the older consoles that really needs a way to play on modern TV's with great visuals and no lag. Heck, getting it to look good on the old 1080p HDTV's was like shooting blind. I've had some pretty good results with Monster component cables on an older LG HDTV hooked up to the PS2, but 3D games still don't look good(but 2D and 3D PS1 games look surprisingly crisp played on a PS2 with this setup). Too many jaggies, the colors seem to bleed almost, it's just crazy that the PS2 is the last of these consoles to get a proper, convenient HDMI solution. People in the comments here are talking about current projects, so I'm hopeful that we'll soon be able to easily buy the ultimate PS2 with an SD card reader and HD outputs.
I’d really like to see the second half of this video where you format the SD card to work with the system and load games onto the card. Currently trying to figure everything out by reading through forums.
I am really not into the PS2 and I really stink at soldering but honestly, this mod looks like something even I could pull off. Kinda drooling for it now, especially with a HDMI mod.
Wow this is pretty much a perfect mod for a damaged shell / DVD drive slim I can tell there's a lot of thought that went into the features and design it looks awesome
I have mixed feelings for this kind of mods (the ones that involve cutting boards and destroying parts of the original hardware) when applied to working machines though in this case it wasn't that aggressive (like in handheld conversions). For one, it seems a very fun project but on the other side, destroying parts of working PS2 makes me a bit uncomfortable, like there is a limited amount of PS2 out there and no factories are producing more. I know it's irrational, it's the PS2 and it's the most sold console in history so there will probably be a bunch more of consoles in the second hand market for years to come, but even so, some part inside of me feels a bit uneasy.
The PS2 sold 155 million units, I don’t think you have to be too worried about us running out in our lifetime and there will be thousands preserved in pristine condition. The PS4 was out by the time they stopped production on them. I’m sure most people attempting this mod including myself will use a 79X model they have lying around or find a well used/broken disc drive one for cheap on eBay like i did. Better to use it for a fun project like this than for it to be thrown out for good.
@@MajoraTheEncryption Realistically I don't think we're running out of ps2s either, at least not in my lifetime but do you know those kind of thoughts/worries that bounce in the back of your head from time to time? This is one of them😅
You know what would be an amazing addon to this build? Having the ribbon cable to the disc drive be adapted to usb and allowing any disc drive to be used to load games. Since disc burned games have higher compatibility, I'm assuming.
I understand how cool it is to have almost entirely original hardware on a small scale but at this point I consider it an emulation device since it's not running original discs. Would be sick to see this done with the original functionality intact. Sick project though and it came out awesome , much respect to the work that went in to this!
It’s not an emulation device, booting ISOs from a hard drive or SD card does not automatically mean it’s using emulation - this mod still uses all of the native hardware to run the games, giving you an authentic ps2 experience
@@dylangerescapeplan basically a Series S version of the PS2. Emulator was probably the wrong word to use. I guess a better comparison would be running PS1/PSP ISO's on a PSP?
This is a really nice looking and clean mod for something using a custom shell. So much nicer looking than any of the GBA consolizer mods. Resin printing is amazing.
I love your videos. You'd be surprised how far the compatibility has gotten over these last few months. Running the latest OPL Beta Build 2048 will run about 80 percent of the library if not more.
It's so good to see that intro again, welcome back Tito! Absolutely love this mod, I reckon a couple of blue LEDs to make the case glow would be peak 00's!
A tip I use whenever I cut something like that USB port removal at the 6 minute mark. I make sure there is more left on the board then I'd sand it down with a needle file to get a clean edge. That way you ensure that once you're done its all flush.
The timing of this couldn't have been better. I have a slim whos laser died about a week ago. It would super awesome if someone could combine the Pi server mod inside the shell
As someone who grew up with this hardware, I love seeing it get a transparent makeover. Seeing the basic black gets boring after a while. Nice that we can mix it up.
I've always been a big fan of custom PS2 slims. Not necessarily modded slims; rather, fat PS2's that have been transformed into slim versions. It's awesome to still have an internal hard drive and the other benefits of the fat model without the bulk or noise.
I just finished to do the same project! (Except that mine is black). Ps2 mini is so cute ! Your video helped me a lot, thank you ! (It was my first time doing electronic stuff)
Actually, instead of cutting the pcb all the way through, you can score it with a knive and break it with your hands instead, like how they break the glass in stained glass art. its way faster in my opinion.
What if you took this concept and someone made a ps2 cube? Slap that disc tray on top, maybe a hdd on the bottom. Lol you can even incorporate a multitap for the ultimate non-Gamecube game cube.
as a 90’s kid who grew up on video games of course i always dreamed about custom made consoles and the endless possibilities the fact you’re actually doing this is very impressive how did you get into this ? and how can i learn to do this myself ?
Everything looked pretty decent with this kit, except for the SD card adapter, which was a bit jank. I think a sub pcb with a micro sd card slot and the necessary solder pads would be a better way to go with future revisions.
Its almost like, I think of something I want to look into, and you just pop out the video days later. This is the second time this has happened; and I'm loving it. Anyways, I watch the video now.
In theory there is 2 versions of the Slim model, one has the rugged dull plastic look on the disc tray and the other has a glossy black style for the disc tray cover, its essencially the same model but the difference is that the disc lens has been improved and isnt as prone to failure as early slim models used to be.
Tito this video was worth the wait! Thank you for linking Wesk's 3D models I can't wait to make shells for my collection of consoles! I'd love to see a Sega Saturn digital only/slim mod if you can find something cool!
I would seriously do an aluminum case for this, especially if I could get it anodized and then laser-etched to look like the japanese FFXII limited edition. Just waiting on PixelFX to release the PS2 HDMI mod so I can tell where the port will go.
I enjoy this channel because it shows how these hobby projects usually go, at least in my experience! Most of the time my projects turn into a series of problem after problem.

I’d have made the case a little bit longer so you don’t have to get rid of the second USB port
you definitely could, but the point it to make this thing as compact as possible while maintaining functionality.
Wow this is pretty much a perfect mod for a damaged shell / DVD drive slim
I can tell there's a lot of thought that went into the features and design it looks awesome
This is one of them😅
This is definitely the coolest mod I’ve seen on this channel. I’m totally gonna do this one day
Meanwhile me: *cries in 90001 console*
You know what would be an amazing addon to this build? Having the ribbon cable to the disc drive be adapted to usb and allowing any disc drive to be used to load games. Since disc burned games have higher compatibility, I'm assuming.
Liking this comment to push it up the chain.
It'd be cool to make one slightly thicker that keeps the disc drive
That's called the original console.
I want to see a ps2 handheld fully portable with a working disc drive
Interesting mod, but why even bother?
Interesting comment, but why even bother?
just for a bit of fun.
Would love a no cut version of the case. I wouldn't mind the extra bit of space it'd take up.
This is amazing for anyone with a slim that's disc drive is dead
This is a really nice looking and clean mod for something using a custom shell. So much nicer looking than any of the GBA consolizer mods. Resin printing is amazing.
I love your videos. You'd be surprised how far the compatibility has gotten over these last few months. Running the latest OPL Beta Build 2048 will run about 80 percent of the library if not more.
Some blue LED's in that case would look great in my opinion.
Thats how it would release today, PS2 with drive and PS2 all digital! xD
It's so good to see that intro again, welcome back Tito!
Absolutely love this mod, I reckon a couple of blue LEDs to make the case glow would be peak 00's!
Really like your intro. Sounds cool!
If I get a bad condition ps2 slim that doesn’t have a working optical drive I’ll build one of these
I love how I got a PlayStation ad on this video
A tip I use whenever I cut something like that USB port removal at the 6 minute mark. I make sure there is more left on the board then I'd sand it down with a needle file to get a clean edge. That way you ensure that once you're done its all flush.
The most interesting part of this mod is seeing the SD card adapter directly to the memory card slot, I was not aware this pin compatibility.
a disk drive made for this that could plug into a port would be sick
It could even just be stacked on top of the console with minimal added bulk
it looks really nice. but not being able to play actual PS2 discs is a bummer. I feel like that should be a necessary part of making a true PS2.
Wow, this looks really nice 😮
that thumbnail is great, gameboy play iut loud clear really made the iea of a transparent clear rectangle of leectroinics so awesome
This thing is SICK!!! 😮😮😮I kinda dig that its a "sketchy" build in the most professional way possible!
I'm going to build this as soon as I have the time! Thank you so much for sharing.
I've always been a big fan of custom PS2 slims. Not necessarily modded slims; rather, fat PS2's that have been transformed into slim versions. It's awesome to still have an internal hard drive and the other benefits of the fat model without the bulk or noise.
Normally I'm not a fan of destructive mods, but this one isn't too harsh. Great video as usual, Tito. Good to have you back for another year!
Isn't too harsh? So if sawing pieces of the motherboard off isn't too hash for you, then what is? 😆
@@retroraider2794 Look up the Wii trims. That's when things get insane for real.
That thing looks amazing. I'd buy one in a heartbeat or ship my Slim off to someone to mod mine if I could.
Man, this looks AMAZING! The kid me would squeal over this. I grew up with PS1 and PS2. It's been years since I last touched a PS2.
Didn't know the 79k model was smaller than the 70k, interesting design indeed.
I can't trust anyone who skipped the intro
Now im curious to know what the modding community can do with that to make new slim downed portable ps2 consoles!
Dude UR CHANNEL IS SO FREAKING GOOD RISE THE MODDING COMMUNITY
Thank you!
What if you took this concept and someone made a ps2 cube? Slap that disc tray on top, maybe a hdd on the bottom. Lol you can even incorporate a multitap for the ultimate non-Gamecube game cube.
Pretty sure someone’s done that minus the hdd
as a 90’s kid who grew up on video games of course i always dreamed about custom made consoles and the endless possibilities
the fact you’re actually doing this is very impressive
how did you get into this ? and how can i learn to do this myself ?
Might get a solder set up just to try this, the soldering seems more then simple. Great video man!
Everything looked pretty decent with this kit, except for the SD card adapter, which was a bit jank. I think a sub pcb with a micro sd card slot and the necessary solder pads would be a better way to go with future revisions.
Its awesome, i agree an hdmi outpout would be the ultimate micro ps2 cristal versión
Its almost like, I think of something I want to look into, and you just pop out the video days later. This is the second time this has happened; and I'm loving it. Anyways, I watch the video now.
is a ps2 memory card really just a proprietary shell around an SD?? that's fascinating
In theory there is 2 versions of the Slim model, one has the rugged dull plastic look on the disc tray and the other has a glossy black style for the disc tray cover, its essencially the same model but the difference is that the disc lens has been improved and isnt as prone to failure as early slim models used to be.
PLEASE cover the Ashida!!! I'm looking into making one for myself, and your videos are SO helpful for informing/teaching!!
Tito this video was worth the wait! Thank you for linking Wesk's 3D models I can't wait to make shells for my collection of consoles! I'd love to see a Sega Saturn digital only/slim mod if you can find something cool!
This is awesome. Now I'm dreaming of a stacked configuration with a slot loading drive..
I would seriously do an aluminum case for this, especially if I could get it anodized and then laser-etched to look like the japanese FFXII limited edition.
Just waiting on PixelFX to release the PS2 HDMI mod so I can tell where the port will go.
You can get hobby knife saw blades! I have used a couple on Gundam plastic models, and modifying a GBA cartridge shell to fit a custom PCB.
dude your channel is blowing up bro I love it. I remember when you just started. glad to see the channel doing well.
I enjoy this channel because it shows how these hobby projects usually go, at least in my experience! Most of the time my projects turn into a series of problem after problem.
