Is that the case in HCMC as well? I fully agree with your comment but I've only been to Hanoi and Da Nang. I think many more of the Vietnamese in the US are from the south than the north (compare how many Vietnamese restaurants in the US have Saigon in their name than Hanoi) so could it be a matter of regional Vietnamese differences?
@@mattdouglas1050yes. Majority of the Viet diaspora in USA, Australia & Europe are from the south because they were the ones who were persecuted (or escaping persecution) when the south democratic govt fell to the north communist govt in 1975. To me I choose Thailand if you can't speak Vietnamese as language barrier is a struggle there. I agree food and women are better. Food is less intense and has less spice, sugar, salt msg than Thai. Women to me is probably the hottest in Asia. They have this very soft feature and look very Chinese or Taiwanese-ish, yet with more curves proportional to their bodies unlike most East Asian women. Women are also very traditional and conversative..wife material type instead of easy hook-up. Ask ChinaMac, he is having a blast there in Vietnam!
A lot of Vietnamese have ancestry in China Proper, having been invaded by various Chinese dynasties fairly regularly and fully conquered in at least four of them. It's even in the origin of the name of Vietnam in 越南, the 越 coming from the State of Yue and the peoples it encompassed.
@@mikeeaston54there are Viets who are darker, esp from the South. The ones from the north are usually fair since many of them have Chinese ancestry. And as the other poster said, they avoid the sun & some use bleaching soaps/ creams.
I talked myself out of Viet Nam and now I'm trying to talk myself back into it--studying the language. I've been to SEA (I'm not Asian), but Philly is my stomping ground (Nam Phuong/Pho75/Pho Ha). The food in Vietnam is healthier than that in Thailand. Many Thais travel to Vietnam, Da Nang, Oi An, and Phu Quoc to enjoy cheap food and stay luxury hotels, etc.. and many Koreans live in VN. Thailand is expensive now! Since Thailand relies heavily on tourism, it is no surprise that 50% of the returns go to Thailand and 5% to Vietnam. In addition, VN has recovered from years of war, sanctions, and covid and is catching up with the world!
I hope Vietnam will never surpass Thailand because I don't want Vietnam to turn diirty like Thailand. I want a conservative clean traditional Vietnam, it is our best quality.
Vietnam’s future for 10 years more 20 years more will be not the same like thai land. Because their economy is not base on tourism as much as thai land. Their developing base on agriculture and industrial more like china, japan. So because of that thai land is more modern for tourists. and If you ask me about my opinion i will choose viet nam because their culture will be hold very tight, the gem is beaty just when is be hidden and vietnam is a special country in the world. When you travel to a place that they use their language more than english, you win
Yes, the Viet people are more aggressive than Thais or Cambodians. Thais are more chill ("sabai sabai"). Also when Viets talk w/ each other, it sounds like they're always angry or fighting (similar to some Chinese languages). Thai language is more "flowy".
I love Vietnamese food in the US and in Thailand. Unfortunately, I didn't find a good one when I visited VN. I tried to search outside the touristy areas and recommended by the locals. But it's still not as good as I expected. Well, I'm sure there must be a really good one, but I may have to stay longer to find it. Pros about VN. 1. I find the people and especially the girls are as nice as in bkk. 2. Coffee. Hands down the best in SEA. 3. Developing infrastructure is Western style and more organized than Thailand, which is way too congested in every big city of Thailand. Cons, 1. I saw a truck load full of dogs in Danang, and it really shocked me😢 2. Tourist towns are either chinese lookalike or French look alike. VN doesn’t have its own unique style in architecture and culture like Thailand. 3. Thailand beats VN any day in terms of street food scenes. The varieties are endless. Not all Thai food is spicy. Thai people can adapt the food from around the world and make it their own and taste good. You can even try Vietnamese food in Thailand as well. They are so clean and delicious.
As a Vietnamese American, I disagree with your comment about Vietnamese architecture are Chinese lookalike. We have our own unique culture and there would be some Chinese influence, just like Japan and Korea, since we have been under Chinese influence for thousands of years. But Thailand was under Indosphere, or Indian influence, so their architecture is of Indian influence as well. Who is to say who is more unique than whom?
@aprilerbe5919 Each country has its own unique traditions. VN is different from China in many ways, of course, especially the food, and Vietnamese people are more welcoming and polite. VN is a country that's blended in Chinese and Indochine together. But the architecture and temples are not the reason for tourists to return every year. I don't think people return to Thailand because of the temples. It's the lifestyle that they love or can't afford it in their home countries.

You'll be able to take advantage of the currency delta in both countries. A minimum wage American can basically live like a king in SE Asia. I'm sorry, but spending $8 on a single cup of coffee is absurd, whether it's in the US or anywhere else. This stuff costs them a few cents to make. The margins are insane. I don't care if they sprinkle gold flakes on top. Total ripoff. I think there's generally more dudes that travel to Thailand as passport bros than Vietnam. Maybe they think Thai chicks are easier? I can almost guarantee that China is even more blunt. People will call you out on your flaws to your face without hesitation. Not sure if that's necessarily the case in Vietnam.
I would like to try Vietnamese food in Vietnam. The Vietnamese food here in the US is all the same. Just banh mi and pho and lemongrass chicken and they all taste the same not much variety or complex flavors so it gets redundant. I can’t really find banh xeo so I make it myself.
Duh.. hello.. Vietnam was colonized by Europeans for 60 years which is why it would feel a bit more familiar to Western tourists than Thailand. Thailand was never colonized by a European power.
Thailand feels safer and more freedom of expression. They can protest freely against their government. Vietnam you can’t speak out against the government and they have the death penalty. Thai culture is beautiful and the entertainment sector is developed and is well known and popular in neighboring countries. There’s a lot of cultural sites and their grand palace and ancient cities are unique with its beauty. Vietnam isn’t very well known for that stuff. Like name a famous temple in Vietnam visited by millions a year? None. Like in HCMC I can’t even think of an iconic building that’s pure Vietnamese I’m culture. Thailand also has top notch beaches that’s featured in movies. Etc etc I can go on. Vietnam has great food and pretty girls but that’s about it. Reason why return rate is low there and high in Thailand. Even presentation in Thai American restaurants is pretty while Vietnam looks like a Chinese restaurant, does not stand out . @jimwoo9552 Of course, among NON- East Asian guys & NON- Southeast Asian guys, white Western men are the most attractive to East Asian and Southeast Asian women. There is no doubt about this fact. However, let's analyze some notable points as follows: In the Southeast Asian region, there are clear reasons why white Western men come to the Philippines and even Thailand the most to seek out and interact with local women: Philippines: This is the country with the strongest influence of Western culture in Southeast Asia, and also the country with the most mixed Western blood in the region. Thailand: White Western men can still attract dark-skinned Thai girls here, although it is much more difficult for them to attract fair-skinned Thai girls. Other countries: Vietnam: The most beautiful and fairest-skinned women in the region, so naturally, they have the highest standards for choosing men in the region (most women here prefer local men and East Asian men). Cambodia: Still poor, though increasingly attracting white Western men. Laos: There is little influence due to its large area, sparse population, and lack of coastline. Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei: These countries are Muslim with very closed-off cultural lifestyles, and women do not have much freedom to display their beauty. Singapore: Too upscale for average or lower-level white Western men to reach (just like in East Asian countries). Myanmar: A large country with a large population, but ongoing wars and violence make it unsafe. Timor-Leste: Too small, with too little influence.

Great vid. You should visit all nearby countries and tell us your take on the food & culture. If possible, team up with a local influencer/ UA-camr for a food crawl or one with a company that does food tours. You're in the region and flights are affordable (check out Air Asia, Scoot, Tiger Air, Cebu Pacific Air, etc). Hope you also do podcasts w/ Andrew, even if it's via zoom. Andrew doing sociopolitical content without someone to bounce ideas with isn't all that great (and the views reflect that). Merry Christmas to you & your loved ones! 🎄 🎅🤶🎁
None of the Vietnamese foods aboard is on the level of the Vietnamese foods in Vietnam. Next time hire a local who know where to take u. U will see
Is that the case in HCMC as well? I fully agree with your comment but I've only been to Hanoi and Da Nang. I think many more of the Vietnamese in the US are from the south than the north (compare how many Vietnamese restaurants in the US have Saigon in their name than Hanoi) so could it be a matter of regional Vietnamese differences?
pho and banh mi definitely tastes better in the states i ain't gon' hold you.
@@mattdouglas1050yes. Majority of the Viet diaspora in USA, Australia & Europe are from the south because they were the ones who were persecuted (or escaping persecution) when the south democratic govt fell to the north communist govt in 1975. The south call it "fall of Saigon" while the north call it "reunification of VN". (History is written by the winners.)
The early groups of migrants from Vietnam (boat people) from late 70s to early 80s were from the south. Later on, ppl from the middle & north also migrated due to economic hardship.

Msg use in Vietnamese food come in form of clear soup and those variety of processed meat which is also very intense.
You are absolutely right. I wonder how they are able to stay so fair skinned when it's hot as heck there.
@@mikeeaston54dark secret they bleach their skin in addition to staying indoors during the day. They adopt a night owl lifestyle for the most part.
I'm making Thịt Kho Tàu for Christmas today. I've learned how to make some Thai and Malay food too from traveling.
Pho Ha was the best Vietnamese restaurant in the United States in the 90s and early 2000s. I kid you not
@@mattparke4370 Pho Ha was the 1st Viet place I ever tried back in 05-06. It was recommended by a Khmer guy in one of my classes at community college. Back then I think a large bowl was about $7 (pho tai chin was my thing) with the tea pot. Now it's double... across the board and I don't think the tea is included anymore.
@@Hrangue Pho Ha was our Ichiraku Ramen before real Ramen arrived
@@Hrangue Oh yeah, let me let you in on a secret. I think Pho Ha has been through 3 to 4 owners by now. The FIRST original owner left and went to New Jersey. I don't know which restaurant it is but it is a success there too. I had his Pho in 2021 before I left Philly and yes, it was THE original. Good luck finding him though cause I forgot which restaurant.
Vietnam still had a high of 20 million tourists each year (mostly new tourists who have never been before) which is one of the highest in the world.
The coffee shop game is peak in Ho Chi Minh
Cultured!!!! You doing good on this bro. Especially as an Asian too. 👊🙏
Thailand tourism is more mature than Vietnam but in the next 5-10 years, I think Vietnam will be right up there, maybe even surpass Thailand.
I hope Vietnam will never surpass Thailand because I don't want Vietnam to turn diirty like Thailand. I want a conservative clean traditional Vietnam, it is our best quality.
@@mattparke4370 Never surpass for sure.
Vietnam the food is really amazing especially in Da Nang !
people need to tell fung bros to go visit S21 museum in Cambodia and see why US and China support pol pot in the 1970s
The Café fin at 3:20 has a picture of napoleon on it. Viets love French stuffs and napoleon lol
This is a good review bro! Cause all goes to marketing cause . But quality of consistency then yes.
I don't like the aggressive nature in Vietnam.
Yes, the Viet people are more aggressive than Thais or Cambodians. Thais are more chill ("sabai sabai"). Also when Viets talk w/ each other, it sounds like they're always angry or fighting (similar to some Chinese languages). Thai language is more "flowy".
I don’t think Vietnamese people are aggressive though.
That's north Vietnamese
Been here in Saigon for 9 years, where is this aggressive nature you speak of?
Maybe just in the north where theres the worst people in the country. In the rest, we re just so chill and friendly
Cons, 1. I saw a truck load full of dogs in Danang, and it really shocked me😢
Just pick both. Done!
I'm a Vietnamese, living in Thailand on DTV visa. I prefer Thailand over Vietnam for these reasons:
- Corruption
- Dangerous Traffic
- Noise Pollution
- Scammers

I'm sorry, but spending $8 on a single cup of coffee is absurd, whether it's in the US or anywhere else. This stuff costs them a few cents to make. The margins are insane. I don't care if they sprinkle gold flakes on top. Total ripoff.
I think there's generally more dudes that travel to Thailand as passport bros than Vietnam. Maybe they think Thai chicks are easier?
I can almost guarantee that China is even more blunt. People will call you out on your flaws to your face without hesitation. Not sure if that's necessarily the case in Vietnam.
Spot on bro.
Yet Vietnam is the LEAST European of all the Asian countries in mindset
I find the beef tastes better in vietnam pho. The beef is more tender, fatty, and sliced more thinly so it kinda melts in mouth.
Sorry just speaking from experience
France bombed and destroyed all ancient temples and ancient architecture. We will never know what it looks like. All the books are destroyed too.

The locals call it Saigon
Living in the states as a first generation, I've always called it Saigon since that's where my family immigrated from. When ever I talk to the younger generation they always correct me to say Ho Chi Min City. Does anyone know why?
Searching top 10 evil one and you will find why. I'm not remember the word the person k8lling all massive race @snowdude1080
@@snowdude1080the south ppl will always call it Saigon. The north ppl (and the young ones) will/ may call it HCMC. For the south, to change the ancestral name of a city and replace it with a leader from the north (who killed many of their south brethren), there are still wounds that hurt. Immigrants/ 1st gen in the US, AUS, Europe (who are mostly from south) will always call it Saigon bcos it's part of their southern identity/ motherland.
The young ones born in VN (after 1975: fall of Saigon/ reunification) may call it HCMC bcos it's part of their schooling/ indoctrination.
Think of it this way: suppose N Korea won & took over S Korea. Then N Korea changed the name of Seoul or Busan city to Kim Il Sung City. How would the south Koreans feel?
@@snowdude1080 Sài Gòn was the name of the city that predated French colonialism and US occupation of Vietnam. Its history is over 300 years. Ho Chi Minh city was the name given to the city to celebrate the reunification of Vietnam and the fall of the US backed puppet regime in the South. Nowadays many people still call it Saigon for short, including people from the North so it's not like a North vs South thing like the anti communist diasporas like @kitty_s23456 trying to manufacture non existent tensions. Most of these overseas people are pro white supremacists, pro colonialists and have zero understanding of the history of their motherland.

Kebab Banh Mi is great. Costs about the same as a traditional banh mi.
I never eat Vietnamese food in the US (unless my relatives cook it). Its way too expensive. $8-9 for a bowl of Pho? $3-4 for a banh mi? No way I'm paying those prices.
how can you make profit in US if you sell the food same price as Vietnam? are u that delulu?
Vietnamese food is worth the price because it is healthy and the ingredients and prep are more complicated than western cuisine. So Vietnamese food should be placed on pedestal

I go out to experience and watch street videos in Vietnam, observing as follow:
Most of the Indian and Black African guys (over 90/100) are either alone or in male groups, never with Vietnamese girls.
The remaining 10/100 are mostly paired with girls from their own country.
@@DacLam-p5v Need to remember this, for trips to Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia. Hong Kong...
@jimwoo9552 Of course, among NON- East Asian guys & NON- Southeast Asian guys, white Western men are the most attractive to East Asian and Southeast Asian women. There is no doubt about this fact.
However, let's analyze some notable points as follows:
In the Southeast Asian region, there are clear reasons why white Western men come to the Philippines and even Thailand the most to seek out and interact with local women:
Philippines: This is the country with the strongest influence of Western culture in Southeast Asia, and also the country with the most mixed Western blood in the region.
Thailand: White Western men can still attract dark-skinned Thai girls here, although it is much more difficult for them to attract fair-skinned Thai girls.
Other countries:
Vietnam: The most beautiful and fairest-skinned women in the region, so naturally, they have the highest standards for choosing men in the region (most women here prefer local men and East Asian men).
Vietnam is booming they have their own beauty pageants now miss cosmo and misss charm ,,
