Heavy Arrow VS Light Arrow Speed Test!!

- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- I put my PSE EVO NXT 33 to the test with a chronograph. I tested the bow's speed with two varying arrow weights. I have a 52 lb draw weight, 28.5 inch draw length. The arrows used in the test weighed 447 grains and 369 grains.

Greatly enjoy your video channel. Lots of good information. I have been bow hunting for more than 20 years and have been a "go light" supporter. Last year I switched to heavy, weight forward (22%) arrows. Grizzly Stick tapered arrows, 30 inches, 540 grains with tip. Was 1 for 2 last season, the second, a clean miss. Given the arrow speeds you measured (236, 250 and 255) results in a time to target at 20 yards of .254, .24 and .235 seconds and at 30 yards .381, .36, and .352 respectively. The difference between the lightest and heaviest is only .02-.03 seconds. Two to three hundreds of a second. I wouldn't get to hung up on the speed. The energy carried to the target of the heavier arrow far outweighs the loss of a few fps. Obviously, will see more drop over distance, sight pins will just be further apart.
Thanks for the feedback and for watching Jim!
Yeah i dont know where you got your info but ibo has always been 70lbs 350grn and 30 inch draw
IBO Speeds are really overrated in reality my bear paradox hc bow with twin cams is rated at 340fps !! I shoot it at 28 inch draw and 55 lbs..it is still very fast but no where near 340 fps!!!!!
Great video. For whitetail, I suggest using 440gr arrow with a Swhacker broadhead for your setup. Axis with 50 or 75gr brass insert.
im adding more weight to my arrows i dont like it being loud with 422 grains i cant go more then 600 gr or my rest will move up and down already stripped bolts from always tightening the up after 10 shots 66 lbs 28.5
Great video, quiet that rifle, I mean bow down! I had to use hearing pro.
I think you have them backwards
IBO is 5 grains per pound and testing is 70# at 30” with a 350 grain arrow.
Speed doesn't kill. Trad bow hunters are shooting a lot less than 250 fps with 550+ grain arrows and getting a clean pass through on elk sized game. You'll never Beat a deer sound travels faster than your arrow a quiet bow with an adult arrow kills
an arrow coming straight out of the bow aka tuned and a broadhead thats extremely sharp and doesn't take much effort to initially enter the animal, you shouldnt have much of a problem with those speeds. i would go 450 or greater.
The standard of measuring speed should be done at 10yards, 20, 30 and 40yards from the target using a lighter and heavier arrow with the chronograph right up to the target, the arrow is fastest right from release and would lose a bit over say 30yards, measuring like this would give a hunter a much better knowledge of the potential speed on target
In Italia non abbiamo limiti di libbre, in FIARC è il limite velocità 309 FPS, in FITARCO non ci sono limiti..
what happens after impact is all that matters. forget fps and focus on momentum.. and trash mechanicals
Averaging 5fps lost per roughly every 20grains
Allie does a great job giving detailed explanations with enthusiasm. Just love her!
Glad you liked it!
Oh stop. Yer lookin at er butt ya perve lol
Oie bow is good
I shoot 70lb 29" draw. I shoot 530 grain arrow set up and I bet it ibo at like 220. But it's quite and blows thru the deer.
I don't pay attention to #s I practice every day with what I have
Find you a 400 spine arrow with a lower G.P.I. rating and build up the front of center quite a bit and use a Good Cut on contact or any good fixed blade and you will No problems with penetration! AWESOME video by the way!!
Thanks for the tip Paul!
Was it you or your boyfriend that realized the 3 at the end was for error code 3...checked the manual and error code three is light restrictions or low light 🤣🤣
LOL I cant even remember
i was doing a video with for my new oneida bow and my chrono was doing the same thing. Its usually very reliable but for some reason on this day it did more error than readings.
I think low light was my problem.
52 pounds is not high poundage? You mad !
oh thats a nice puppy. i definitely want to see her
There is an old saying, speed is fine, but accuracy is final.
For sure.
With no more change in speed than that you could likely just use the heavier arrow for everything if you wanted. When I first started bow hunting the bow I had shot 190fps with the hunting arrow. And I watched them fall. I am going to a heavier arrow and 60lbs with 27DL. My bows are probably no faster than what your shooting now.
In colorado there's a minimum 30lb draw weight. I didn't find anything about maximum.
Arrow speeds not going to matter too much except for if you don't know your yardage stop placement. Placement shot placement.
Cool 😎 beans Allie
Dang, strong lady
Hola saludos de chile
30 inches 70 pds
Well I must say you have really become knowledgeable about bows and how to shoot ! But you just couldn't get a grasp on how to cast a fly rod ! So it go to show that it is very hard to cast a fly rod great ! 👍
I ♥️👍 your vids as much as possible.
Nick is luuuuuuuucky! LoL take care n keep posting your adventures "Real Deal" Allie D!

55 foot pounds. That's good
Thanks! Been working on it.
Them chronographs are toutchy in differing lighting
Hi allie, this is Wayne from Indiana, I'm gonna give you a little extra history, from and foremost, from the manufacturers original designations, the IBO did come out with the IBO speed, ,and yeah, then the ATA SHOW, came out with their own research, I don't know when the word term was dropped, but the original arrow speed was, "" classified as,,,,AMO,- this stands for, ARCHERY MANUFACTURERS ORGANIZATION, the AMO, there was a guy who, I believe he live in Wisconsin, his name is NORB MULANEY, I think he's passed away, I think he had a degree in engineering, the bow companies """ , would send him their bows for his research judgement, he documented everything about the compound bow, the older models bows ,that had low roll over let-off, were infact kinda hard to hold, then in the possible mid 90s, the let-off cams were getting redesigned, all the companies were doing it, it was referred to as, "" hysterisis , it starts off light, then the rollover hits and explodes, I know your younger than I am, but I am just letting you know a little extra history, but I am glad that you have begun to start using your own bow press, the more mechanics you learn you will get better, but we need to get the word out, there are way too many archery wannabes lazy idiot's out there that talk big and can't back it up, I'd like to hear from you, I do have a lot of archery to talk about, wayneeden95@gmail.com
Thanks for the feedback Wayne! Much appreciated!
The pse you have. They under rated the ibo speed. From the factory. Some states also make you adjust the the let off .from 85 to 80. The chrono needs alot of lite. For testing.
Yes, for sure.
your right shooting paper under 10m i got told off by some english toff shooting paper at 3 meters . this guy made a point of being loud about it ( trying to be self important) 》THE ARROW STABLISES ITSELF AT 20 METERS 《 wooow my reply was i know im new here pal but i think your wrong , a lot of pros on here say the same , within 10 m great video Allie
the chronographs are funny with light . the ones with shades are strange , its not the nocks
Lighter arrows slow down quicker at longer distances than a heavier arrow. I wish people would do chronograph tests at actual hunting distances and not just point blank, because I don’t think anyone learned anything from this video. Yeah heavier arrows are slower than lighter ones coming out the bow. I mean duhhhh…. But how do they compare at 20,30,40 yards? How much quieter are heavy arrows compared to lighted ones? Just a thought.
Interesting idea. Thanks for watching Austen!
ok, but which arrow penatrated deeper? I would guess the heavier slower arrow. Dont even think pulling 50 lbs is a disadvantage, many top bow hunters like Dwight Schuh and Ted Nugent use bow in the 50 lbs range. I just shake my head as the Macho meter keeps going up. First 60lbs was the norm, then 70lbs and now i see many buying bows in the 80lbs range.
Ya, I've heard of 90lb limbs now too!! Crazy stuff.
Thanks for the video sunshine! I always enjoy your bright smile and knowledge. I’m jealous you got to hunt with Jeff though. Love his videos as well.
Love the math. Great knowledge in perfecting ones performance. As a carpenter, i can respect the math. As well a general background in engineering. Not would have realized this. But makes perfect sense
Chronographs are weirdly light sensitive. It can be too dark OR too bright for them, very temperamental! The shades over the chronograph can be adjusted a little bit but mostly you just have to find the right light.
Yes, agreed.
A lethal arrow system is more important than speed. With speed, you just miss faster. You can't beat an animal, they are going to move. Lighter arrows lose speed at distance. Hope you find the happy medium. Good video.
Thanks for the feedback David!
250fps = 170mph
Thanks for watching Mack!
Hi guys! Great video. I enjoy the content that you are creating on here. I’m looking forward to seeing both of you connect on a PA whitetail soon. I hunt in 4D, and plan on tagging my first archery buck this year. Keep up the great work! Greg in Happy Valley
I hunt in 4d also good luck this year, We Are!
Thanks guys! Good luck to you as well!!
Also, my bow is significantly quieter at the 540 grain arrow than my carbons at 380, bow goes thunk versus crack!
Get a v3. Dead quiet with 375ish gr arrow. Good luck.
I got the VXR and it’s ridiculous quiet with my light target arrow. My hunting arrow is a 300 spine 4fletch gold tip hunter pro with a 100 grain brass insert and 125 grain point, and it’s also more civilized in the sound department. Thank you Mathews for the engineering work of art
@@voxpopuli905 I have shot 375 gr and now about 405. Both have been super quiet. No noise at all 58lbs. Shoot darts at 30yrds
@@voxpopuli905 Heavy arrow will quiet it down more. I shoot 595 grain out of a traverse
@@christophergolla775 I just built a dozen 6.5 matrix match grade 250 spine with Ethics stainless 100 gr inserts and 125 tip. I can probably step up higher in weight by 50 grains if I wanted, but I’m getting near perfect arrow flight where I’m at. I estimate somewhere in the neighborhood of 525 grains total. I may add a footer on the outside for durability insurance and with a IronWill I should be able to pound that arrow through anything including shoulder on a quartering in shot.
I did some testing this weekend on my 3d target and that arrow blew through the target and through the hay bales behind it and lost the arrow. Meaning it penetrated into the earth and I’ll prob never find it. I need a tougher 3D target
About 450 is the lightest I’ll go
You could try this too increase speed by cutting your arrows half inch shorter than your draw length I think it’s called over draw your arrow rest is closer too you the problem with this is you can’t use 4” vanes feathers on your arrow
Thanks for the feedback!
Loved the cameo from Abby! Great video ☺️ my draw length is 25” 😩
And the first thing Abby does is moon the camera. 😆
LOL she's awesome.
Thanks for watching Holly!
Loved seeing your Abbey. We lost our sweet yellow lab Abbey two years ago. RIP Queen Abbey the Labby.
😢 They're the best!
That arrow is not a heavy arrow try more 730 grains
So, anyone know why and who at IBO decided to jump to 80 pounds? Part of a speed bow marketing sales pitch so bows look like they are shooting rockets??? Just wonder how many IBO 3-d competitors do 80?
Next time you are in low light try taking off the white plastic covers over the chronographs eyes.
For sure! Thanks for watching Christopher!
A better question than speed at the bow, is what is the terminal energy at a given realistic hunting distance?
I get the idea of where you’re coming from, but arrows don’t carry enough kinetic energy to kill medium and larger game species in the United States. They kill by cutting vital tissues and blood letting. Arrows need kinetic energy to move and to deploy expandable broadheads if used. But momentum is what drives penetration.
Two main standards = fast and slow, but all kill! You be rocking some legit arrow weights, i know many dudes pulling 70+ shooting arrows in the mid 300 range; However, Major jelly about that bitchin bow...
Thanks for watching Chris!
@@OutdoorsAllie Word!
Sometimes with the chronos when light gets low all you have to do is take the shades off the top and you are good to go.
Thanks for the feedback!
70lb 27 dl 450gr 4mm arrows , but what gets me is 12 year old drops first white tail , 13 yr old girl kills first deer , were all tuning our selves and gear for speed accuracy and pass through impacts with heavier arrows , what does a 12 year old kid draw , ( ps some of the chonographs with the top shades often miss shots ) theyre funny in certain lighting
Allie is such a fresh breath of air! So down to earth :)
Sexy too. How many girls of that caliber do ya know that aren’t super bitchy? And on top of that she’s shooting bows and hunting. Almost unheard of
243 up my guess 😊
I was cursed with short arms and a short draw length. What’s a good arrow weight for those who aren’t drawing 30”/80 lbs?
I'm not sure. I'll have to do some research!
What you are comfortable with there is no magic weight for bow hunting a well tuned arrow nock tuned squared knock and insert ends try different field point weight find which one tunes the best and gives you the best foc for your tuned arrow and bow
Always fun seeing the differences in arrow speeds. Everyone just please keep in mind, speed is cool but arrow weight is the top factor in penetration. Heavy arrows will always penetrate better when all else is equal. Find that balance. And use a fixed blade broadhead.
For sure. Thanks for watching Landon!
Error!
Your form has gotten so good. Nice job Allie!
Thank you!!
But how's the draw? (1) and (2) How's your shoulder doing with your 33? I am still enjoying my NXT 31 but do wish I got the 33 instead.....At least I can carry a smaller bow case Lol😏👍
Shoulder hasn't improved much, but hasn't gotten worse either.
Thank you for sharing your data. I appreciate it. And I would love to see more more weights. What is the speed with a 1000 grain arrow? A 2000 grain arrow? For the weights shown 255fps*(369grain/weight of arrow)^(0.4) seemed to predict the speeds. And suggests that a 1000 grain arrow would move at around 170 fps. I wonder if that would hold in reality. Also, if you have a traditional (non compound bow), I'd like to see how it works relative to arrow weight.
Thanks for watching. Much appreciated!
Need more light.
Allie, thanks to you and Nick for the great videos you do. I wish they had to use a 28" draw length and provide the minimum and maximum FPS speed for the adjustable strength the bow using a 400 gr arrow. That would end a lot of the guessing and speculation. I was surprised that your bow lost so much energy from 70lbs down to 52lbs 315-ish down to 240-260ish. I would have expected you to be up around 280fps. I shoot an old Matthew FX at 62lbs and have a near 28" draw length and get in the near 280 out of a 388-400gr arrow. You all keep it going strong and are you going to ETAR here in PA this year?
Thanks for watching Dan. I've never heard of ETAR, I'll check it out!
I thought IBO was 70lbs at 30”draw
Same
Me too
IBO is 70# set at 30” and 5 grains per pound. This is the first time I’ve heard it’s at 80. I just googled it and only find one source that says 80#
I guess as long as the 5 grains per pound is followed then it should be good at a 400 grain arrow for testing
Yeah IBO is at 70lb 30" otherwise you would use ATA which is at 28? 26 inches? It would be tested at 60lbs.
Speed doesn’t kill, penetration does. I’m shooting the Carbon stealth 35” 72lbs 28.5 DL 589g arrow @240FPS I’ve gotten 2 deer this season with great results. For 3D season this coming summer I’ll be shooting a lighter arrow again for getting more distance and speed.
Thanks for the feedback!
I'm shooting 52# at 25" draw, a 500 grain arrow with about 19% FOC. I get about 200 fps. With a 360 grain arrow, I'm still only getting 230 fps. So I'll take the slower speed for a heavier arrow with more penetration any day. It just means closer shots are necessary, and isn't that what is cool about bowhunting anyway, getting in close?
No doubt.
Allie, anything bow with a speed over 200.......is cocked, locked and ready to Rock. Arrow placement rules the day anyway. Another resourceful video.
For sure. Thanks for watching!
It's surprisingly difficult to find ANY info for what different bows shoot at lower poundages, seems everyone in the world but me shoots 70lbs. Awesome video good job!
Thanks for watching!
Very cool video. I have a cheap chronograph at home and tested my speed. My Xpedite, which is PSEs speed bow, has an ATA rating of 352 fps, with loop and peep tied in I get 345fps with my 345 grain arrows. With my 666 grain arrows I still get 273fps. Bow is set to 80# with 30" draw. Your speed is actually pretty good considering your "low" poundage.
Just think about what you wanna be hit with: a 30fps Pinpong ball or a 3fps bowling ball. Kinetic energy is not everything, but as usual, the goal is the middle between speed and weight.
Nice. Thanks for watching Peter!
I shoot 60 pounds and I have on order black eagle carnivors 350s that are 7.5 grains per inch with 50 grain brass insert..I'm not telling you what to do but I'd shoot a lighter arrow and go with 50 grain or so up front. Btw luv your videos..👍
No worries. I appreciate the feedback!!
Just throw a Valkyrie Bloodsport into that Axis arrow with the 50 grain insert. Adopt the mindset of what that broadhead does when it meets flesh & bone & put that 237# out of your mind. Your bow will be quieter too which is why people still use recurves for hunting.
Thanks for the tip Joe!
Great review on all your points. Total arrow weight with a decent FOC ( maybe 15 to 18%?) is to me way more relevant than speed. Mass & momentum. Have you tried the Magnus Black Hornet 2 blade? Have you tried increasing your draw weight by adding a halfturn on the limb bolts and shooting that like 5-10 times a day for a week or so? Do it enough as to where it feels comfortable and you are in control. Then add another turn and repeat. Literally, in 4-6 weeks you could possibly add some serious draw weight and maybe get into the 270fps.
No, but I plan on doing something like that this year. Thanks for watching Tim!
To get the best reading with a chronograph you need good natural lighting I can tell it’s a little dark outside try it when you have a good overhead lighting
Next time for sure!
Started into bowhunting and my draw weight was at 75 pounds. Shooting 3d and league indoor events that became too much. New bows are so much more efficient I can shoot my old arrows way faster now at 62 pounds.
For sure.
Just for future reference, that target will work as a decoy in the rut. Left mine in the woods behind our barn last season and a buck came up in the night and absolutely demolished him.
hahahahah that's awesome! I'd love to see the footage!
Can you tell me more about your p s e. I'm starting to shop for my first bow. I have 24.5 draw length. I am strongly considering the Matthews prima or the Hoyt eclipse. My shop sales p s e brand but did not offer them as a option.
Can't go wrong with either. I've had great experiences with all 3 brands!
4:25 but ATA is tested at 60 lb, at either 26" or 28" draw length IBO rating is tested with 70lb 30" draw. Just thought let you all know that:)
The fastes compound i ever see was from apa archery king cobra with 370 fps 🤩 greetings from germany
Thats nuts!!
Forgot two more things that affect arrow speed, percent let off and brace height. Bear LS6 was rated at 355 FPS at 70 pounds. It was able to achieve those speeds because of its low let off of only 70% and short brace height of 5 inches. High arrow speed always comes at a price, and it’s usually at the cost of shoot ability and smoothness.
Thanks for the feedback Robert!
What do you hunt mostly, for deer that's really not a bad speed but for elk that's a different story but your speeds will still kill an elk you just have to hit him right on you ever wanna come to new mexico private land elk hunt let me know I've been doing this to long we dont worry about speeds here # 1 your placement
Yes, this time of year mostly deer.
You look great! Always my favorite huntswoman.....
Great info and video
Thanks for watching Richard!
Arg... should have stayed with Mathews.
I like them both!
@@OutdoorsAllie pse has come a long way.
caldwell chronos suck. i get more errors than readings.
In low light take the shaders off of metal poles, your chrono doesn't need them unless it's really sunny. But I've owned the Caldwell chrono and it gave me a ton of errors even in good lighted conditions. So you are not alone! Keep it up and best of luck!
Thanks for the tips Dom!
I've got a couple of tips, for gaining speed.
1) You can have your string builder, make you an, 18 strand string, instead of 20 strand string.
2) Shorten you center serving, most are around 5 inches, make 3 inches.
If you do this, you can gain up to 8 fps..
I would suggest going to a cut on contact broadhead, if you hunt Elk, you don't have-to spend a ton of cash, Magnus make good heads, I personally, love the stinging, it'sgot a lifetime warranty and it shoots awesome. But call around, you may be able to get companies to send you some for testing...
Best of luck, love you guys, much respect.
That Magnus Stinger you like is pretty much an updated version(but not significantly altered) of the venerable old Bear Razorhead designed by Fred Bear back in the 1950's. The fact that it stands up well against all the fancy, new technology heads out there today says a lot for the design!!!
@@scotscheideman9800 You are right, I would use Bear , but you can't find them anymore, best head ever made in my opinion, not saying other companies are making bad stuff, but you just can't beat The old bear heads.
Thanks for all of the feedback guys! Much appreciated.
heavier weight arrows with heavier fixed blades do alot more damage then a faster lighter arrow setup think of it as if u got hit with a golfball moving the same speed as getting hit with a ping pong ball the heavier one has alot more momentum. Great video though i enjoyed it for sure c: im bout to go hit some public land here in iowa wish me luck.
Good luck out there in Iowa!!
good video next you should do a kinetic energy test
Thanks for the idea!
@@OutdoorsAllie your welcome and I did notice my arrows are 7.7 gn per inch and I checked it with a fmj which is 10.+ gn per inch the amount of kinetic energy to me did not make a big difference .
Your chronograph is a Southern one that talks funny! Error is its way of saying "Arrow" lol
LOL thanks for watching Zane!
Colorado is 35#. I am not so interested in speed anymore and I am in the process of building HFOC going from a 475gr arrow going to a 550gr + and using fixed heads from now on. Made a bad shot and lost a deer this year using the 475gr arrow 12% FOC with a mechanical head. I have been down for about around 3 months and learning more about the heavier/HFOC. Can't wait to be able to shoot again.
Dang. Get well soon Bryce!

The chronograph needs overhead light to create a shadow to read. When it was giving you an error, it looked slightly more overcast which most likely was the mishap.
Yes, learned the hard way LOL
@@OutdoorsAllie I think we all do. I did the same thing with a rifle. After spending the money I felt robbed until I learned as well.
