    There probably isn't much difference because the kinetic energy is likely close in all cases. Heavier arrows going slower might end up with similar KE as the lighter arrow going faster. Personally, I like the lighter arrows for the flatter trajectory and speed to target.

    • @suthernmutt1459

      The heavy arrows have more KE at 60yards than the light arrows have at launch. Ranch fairy radar verified the numbers.

    More momentum is only due to a heavier arrow it has nothing to do with penetration, their slower and have a lobbing trajectory. I don't know why anyone would want this in their archery life. Lighter faster arrows have a flatter trajectory and shoot straighter and penetrate the same as a heavy higher momentum arrow. The armor piercing arrow has a narrower diameter shaft then the field point and the shaft doesn't aquire as much resistance from the target. The field point opens the hole and without resistance from the shaft,goes straight through the target. This effect only works with field points because broadheads open a hole big enough to reduce arrow shaft resistance. Hope this helps, great job on your video.

    you cant just throw a bunch of weight into a arrow and expect it to perform. "dynamic spine" is kinda important. that 710gr should be a 200 spine. Not only does a weak spine arrow effect the amount of arrow deflection during the shot but it also Deflects during impact. a stiff shaft is more efficient in maintaining momentum.

    • @scottpaulsen2649
      @scottpaulsen2649 Рік тому +1

      To be fair he never said how the weight was added if its weight tubes or heavy inserts so you can't just assume he's weakening the spine bc tubes don't really do as much to spine as foc weight

    Multiple videos now showing the trade offs of light vs heavy. Although heavy arrows win in peneteationn out at distance, the trajectory in the woods may put you in the trees and not on the deer. Middle of the road and smaller diameter looks to be the win win.

  • @fishhunter348
    @fishhunter348 2 місяці тому +1

    I reckon the thin arrow penetrated so much better because the larger diameter tip and collar creates a bigger diameter hole for the rest of the arrow to go through with way less friction.

  • @williambartos4797
    @williambartos4797 Рік тому +9

    you got similar results because of how close and because of momentum. Momentum = mass x velocity. Your mass went up as your velocity went down, giving each of your arrows the same momentum and thus the same penetration. You would get different results and distance as energy bled off due to drag.

    • @tsz374
      @tsz374 Рік тому +1

      absolutely wrong. increase arrow weight, increased momentum.
      more energy absorbed by heavy arrow from stored bow energy

    • @michaelpoplawski3246
      @michaelpoplawski3246 Рік тому

      @@tsz374 you would be correct IF you accounted for the fact that he did not adjust the poundage of the bow to keep the speed consistent between the different weights. At this short range, the increased speed compensated for the lighter weight, which is why the arrow penetration remained roughly the same.

    • @michaelpoplawski3246
      @michaelpoplawski3246 Рік тому +2

      You're correct. Unfortunately, that means they're going to need to invest the time and effort to put together a ballistics gel block that is maybe 4 times what they used here (depending how accurate they are at distance). A better test would be at 40 yards, where you're splitting the difference between the shorter yardage that most whitetails are harvested vs. the longer distances that western bowhunters typically encounter.
      What they will find is that the heavier arrow will lose less velocity over distance compared to the lighter arrows. The lighter arrow will bleed off more speed over distance because the lighter weight is more susceptible to the force of drag. The heavier arrow will lose less speed over distance. You'll lose noticeably more penetration over distance with the lightest arrow vs. the heaviest arrow as a result. The downside is that the trajectory for the heavier arrow is such that you cannot afford to misjudge your distance at longer yardage. If you guess 40 yards for a mule deer and the animal is actually 45, most archers will shoot completely under the animal because they're not shooting an 80 lb. bow with 31 inch draw to get their starting arrow speed up to 280 fps.

  • @michaelrosa5410
    @michaelrosa5410 Рік тому +2

    My only comment is that each arrow must be tuned to the bow in order to reap all the rewards of it's penetration. This is because an untuned arrow has a wobble or porpoise and this dissipates energy upon impact. Another factor is FOC if not tuned, doesn't guide the arrow direct thru it's target.

    I use the VAP VICTORY VOODOO bolts on my crossbows and they go through my target bags as well and more... fifteen dollars each... but for hunting deer and such... well worth the price and the best arrows for going through things I have ever used. I don't need that kind of power for my flu flu archer but bought some flu flu arrows recently that hit harder than I wanted... but will use them any way. Means I have to hike more to get my arrows back... more exercise for me and guess good physical therapy since I lost my left leg below the knee in 2018. Velocity×velocity×mass/450240= KE.......velocity is measured twice , weight once. The difference in KE is minimal as weight goes up or down . The argument for heavy arrows has always been momentum. In real world results , at least for me, light arrows penetrate animals as good or better than slower heavier arrows . KE high enough for the animal your hunting is the key . My current setup is a 402gr arrow at exactly 300fps. That's 80 ft lbs of KE. Exactly TWICE the recommended minimum for a mature whitetail. I used to hunt with a 315gr arrow at 313-325 , depending on which bow I was shooting. The only time I didn't get a complete pass through was on a nice buck at 35 yds . Hit the leg bone on the far side after complete heart penetration . I watched him expire after a 40 yd run.

    I'm not gonna take the time to calculate it, but my guess is that all arrows had a similar KE and that is why they all performed the same. The higher you can get your KE the more penetration you will have. Look up Joel Blitz he has done some great testing on the heavy vs lite arrow set up and basically debunked the heavy arrow myth.

  • @torrielandsman4625

    It is all to do with surface area of the shaft of the arrow in contact with the ballistic jelly, it acts like a brake!
    The skinny arrow has less area so it passed through.
    If you shoot from say 40 yards you will find that the lighter arrows slow faster and don’t retain as much of their energy as the heavier arrows, they don’t loose as much energy to wind resistance as the lighter arrows.

    I didn't hear what the FOC % of each was. Their could be 2 arrows the same weight and one that's 12% FOC is gonna hit way different than one at 25%. Testing the speeds up close, and at 60, that's when you see big performance differences. Between 50 to 60 yards is where you see a huge difference in penetration between light and heavy, and also a big difference in speed erosion when you get past 50. At 60 yards your heavy arrow may lose 15fps out to 60 yard where the light arrow might lose 35fps getting there. It's all very interesting to me. Thanks for the video 🏹

    All arrows shot at 10 yards wether heavy or light, will perform basically the same. Step out to 30+ yards and the heavy arrow will always perform a lighter arrow. Also, no one is building a 700 grain arrow with a 100gr tip. Most of your heavy arrow setups will have 60-70% of the weight out front for a high FOC. instead of making sure the arrow is heavier, changer the tip out front to heavier tips. Start at 100gr and go to 200gr out front and see how that differs. Also on small diameter shafts that use an outsert, the outsert is larger diameter than the shaft causing a larger entry hole, and the arrow virtually has no drag against it. Love the videos, just need better tests. Hope this helps in some way.

    Where the fck does one get Armor peircing arrows?

      We get ours from Russ at Bear Creek Archery in Baldwin Iowa. His contact information is below. You can call him and he could build them and send them your way. Definitely stop by if you live close enough. Great guy and amazing small town service.

    all of the weights are actually way overkill for deer, i will not give up any speed for obese (slow) arrows.

    Just having a heavy arrow vs a light arrow you won’t see much of change but once you increase the foc of a heavy arrow and get perfect arrow flight then you will see a big change.. if you shoot a 710 grain arrow that has a 10 percent foc all you did was shoot a slow arrow…. Get its foc up and you will see a difference also.. ballistics gel isn’t a good medium

    Shoot at 20 yards. Not 3.

    The problem with your test is your way too close it is only showing how they penetrate at launching speed not after speed degradation depending on the distance that's where you're truly see the difference but at the same time you can tell the penetration difference because remember as each Arrow gets heavier it's moving slower and it's penetrating just as deep as the lightest Arrow that's moving the fastest so at distance that light arrow is going to lose more speed than the heavy Arrow which will translate into less penetration

      Great imput. That's what we were thinking but wasn't sure. When we test them again I will shoot form 30-50 yards and will bring some taller targets. 😆

    That's why Ranch fairy is BS !!! Just find the happy medium to keep speed up . 450 I get pass threw on elk!

      I got caught up in the ranch fairy hipe a couple years ago. Happy medium is definitely where I'm at today. I like some weight because it helps keep the arrow more on its path if you hit any twigs, but love my speed because most deer I shoot are moving to some extent.
