You’ve been grinding this UA-cam thing for a while. Really hope you hit 100k sooner rather than later. Videos like this really help people who want to try new things but can’t go out and buy 6 different arrows and components. Thank you
Josh has me convinced. I’ll be slingin RIP XVs at TAW 428 grains. That’s with a 125 mega meat. Used the Mega s last year at 476 grains and blew clean through everything I hit.
Really enjoy the content and information in these type of videos. It’s very useful for building hunting setups. I’ve been using 410-425 grain setups for 15 years, and had no problems with penetration.
You won’t have issues at that with penetration if you have good shot placement. If you have poor shot placement you will but that is on the hunter and their lack of practice 90% of the time. Lighter arrows give more yardage forgiveness on errors in ranging and also minimize the chance of movement by the game you’re taking. I hate the I need 550 guys 😂. Most are living in the 1970’s or something.
Keep on keeping on. As a blue collar bow hunting and arrow obsessed dude. Guys like me appreciate yall. Great info great watch straight forward and not bought out. Thank you.
Love the tinkering content, you have truly inspired me to tinker myself rather than stay stuck in my old ways, it has helped better myself and my gear! Thank you!
Just built my first set of RIP XVs. 250 spine at 420 grain total weight. 319 out of my V3X33! So far really impressed with performance. Great video, keep putting out the content!
Man I been running that same setup all for the last few year out of a 80# bow and I love it for deer never broke one clean pass threws on deer I king of want to build some tko for hogs I just can’t get the rip tko down to 420 with a lighted nock it helps so much finding blood in south ga thick swamps public land not hunting the same spots
Johnneedham- I know what you mean about those southern thickets. Grew up hunting South Carolina. Lighted nocks are a huge help in finding your arrow and blood trail. The thing I like most about the RIP XVs is how easy it is to get FOC on that shaft. I've never been able to use light inserts on any other 250 spine and still end up with a good 14-16%. I used the stainless inserts that fit my rampage and they have been working out great
Hey guys. I want to thank you again for all the outstanding tips, tricks, and general info. I finally got smart and had my brother mark one of my arrows around a 1/4" past the rest while at full draw. I found out I could cut my Gold Tip Hunter XT 340's down again from 28 1/4" to 27". Which brings my arrow weight and FOC from 469gr and 15.13%, down to 458gr and 15.54%Foc. Even when I switch to a .204 arrow, Probably the Victory RIP 300's, the weight and FOC will be around the same.
Dan I appreciate you man! Congratulations on hitting the 100k subs now. It’s right around the corner and I am stoked for you. Appreciate the content, the pod, and especially your camp that helped me learn to be an elk hunter. Hope all keeps going well for you brother!
I shot RIP XV’s this last year on my elk trip. They’re awesome but definitely have to expect them to break. Year before I shot the X-impacts. I loved them but didn’t find a lighted nock that I loved. I’m gonna try the halos back with the X-impacts and revisit that build. I like being able to Index my broadhead with the FOCUS system.
Love the Podium components! Hands down one of the best! Do agree that it would be great if manufacturers would stop including components and let people pick the components.
Love your team, friends and content. When I’m deployed y’all make me feel at home and when I’m in our beloved USA it keeps me informed and motivated. Keep grinding and never ever quit doing what you love..!!
Once again, I learn something I didn't know. I'm switching to .204's for next season because of watching what has worked for you guys. I will be using Podium inserts and some Elk Shape vanes for sure. Thanks for all the fun of 2023.
I am in for the giveaway!! I have been watching for a while and love where the channel is going. I have learned so much from this channel, MFJJ, and so on. If I won the giveaway I would defiantly give my current bow setup to my hunting partner to elevate his game! Lets go 100K!!!
The lightest arrow is a good question. For anyone striving for the super speed maximum for your setup there are careful considerations to ensure you still have an ethical and realistic opportunity to shoot thru the elk's vitals "triangle of death". There is an advantage to having speed. There is an advantage to having the durability that comes with heavier arrow shaft builds. Most guys don't find the performance flat trajectory that is possible but instead go so heavy that every tenth of a yard on the laser rangefinder makes a big difference on your margin of error. In timber it is much easier to thread the needle with a light flat shooter, but you must have the ethical angle thru the kill zone. It is unreasonable to specifically shoot an animal positioned where heavy bone is likely to affect arrow penetration, heavy or light. JUST AVOID the bad angles and this arrow weight debate becomes less of an issue for penetration and boils down to what's more accurate. What's more accurate for you and your setup is totally personal as a choice. Any set-up getting above the 280 fps speed producing at least 80lbs of ke at the bow is enough for elk, assuming you have draw length or ability to pull the draw weight to accomplish this. If not then it is better to design a mid-weight super penetrating broached style and reduce/limit the length of shot taken. From a guide's perspective - the moment of truth tells a lot about the hunter. Hunter is either prepared for the task as his bow and arrow combination is capable - or the hunter is not ready; or the hunter compromises in the moment and forces the bad angle shot; and ultimately blames the equipment rather than themself. It is really more up to the hunter than the arrow. ua-cam.com/users/shorts04w0BquZoPs?si=i4QeX6MHdPdih9NN. see more
Good luck on the 100k, its close... 👍 As far as arrows, I'll keep my 2315's w/125 razorheads for my compound and my woodies w/160 razorheads for all my trad bows. theyve killed everything Ive shot over the last 50 yrs. Maybe about 90% pass thru. If memory serves me my longest shot w/compound was 51yds and closest was 7 yds. Trad bow longest is 25yds and closest was 8 yds. I'm a murphys law kind of guy, if it aint broke dont F with it, no point in complicating something that works...😉
I mean I've been using 4 mm since 2019 into 2020 and I really loved all of it. I was using Pierce platinum's and then I found the vap TK TKOs. I think it is the 4 mm. I really like them but yoon's guys got me talked into the 5 mm saying everything that injure using. I started using them. I like them but I don't know man. I really like my micros a lot. Like you said though it was the inserts and everything and then if I wanted a lighted nock there wasn't a good option at all for a while but it looks like there is now. So thank you it's very much fellas
I’ve been shooting 4mm axis match grades with ti half outs 125gr exodus 450gr taw for over 18 months and they’re still my favorite. Super tough, super straight and hit so damn hard.
Halfout with a collar is exactly what I've been looking for. Arrow shaft to halfout, halfout to collar, collar to broadhead=three points of contact. VS HIT insert (no contact with end of arrow shaft) to collar and collar to broadhead=two points of contact. I'm going to take a wild guess here but three points of contact will be more forgiving on impact than two points of contact.
Just got my elkshape hoodie today. Dan I'm honestly impressed with the quality and how well it fits. No lie I was hyped it fits how I like and was telling the wife well might as well order a few cuz they Fit so well. Thanks brother and keep up the hard work. Would love to drop by Spokane valley archery sometime but it's pretty far from the west side of Washington
I use rip tko 27.5 with podium archery 30 grain titanium half out at 405 grains because of you guys they blow threw black tail and turkeys thanks for all the tips and testing
It’s funny you said the Rip TKO included insert is garbage. I threw those on my 6 pack since I wanted around 50gr insert weight. Let my brother shoot my bow and he sailed that stick straight into a concrete wall. Punched a hole in the cinder block, ruined the tip, but the arrow is still perfect. I was actually impressed by how tough it was.
Same thing happened to me and nothing was wrong with my arrows, except I sailed mine because I forgot to move my slider back! Lol arrow perfect and still spun true!
I just talked to my pro shop about this yesterday, we were saying the same thing. They designed it to bend and not break the 20 dollar shaft. That'd what the shop owner runs, jsut the 50 grain aluminum. He says guys will come in madder about a bent 3 dollar insert than losing a 40 dollar total unit. I think I might slightly prefer the 60g Stainless shok for a shorter application but I don't understand the problem. Super easy to install square too. They protect the hell out of the carbon.
Just made up new arrows Friday night...B.E. Spartan 300, 27" carbon 3-fletch AAE Max Stealth... finished weight is exactly 420gn... will adjust front weight accordingly to speed and tune when the rx8 comes in
Good choice of music bro. I really like a lot of that inserts and all that stuff you're using. I got to go back and write down everything of what it was and whatnot so I can check it out myself. But thank you for making this video and showing me all that cool shit. I appreciate it. It helps me out
you guys are awesome I love all the content, you guys really drive modern day archery and make it possible for everyone to learn the ropes. thanks for all the work you guys put into it!
I stopped using fmj for that bending reason. I shot a small whitetail and it bent from hitting the ribs!! lol I went to gold tip black label. But I'm going to try some new arrows this year.
The toughest arrow I own are my Grizzlystik 240's, which are made by Victory for those who do not know. I run Ethics stainless steel components up front and a very big ridiculously heavy 400 grain Tuffhead single bevel. They are purpose built African dangerous game arrows that I have used on Whitetail as well, but with a 200 grain head. Those things are literal meat missiles. My normal Whitetail arrow is the Procomp 250 w/ Ethics components.
I shoot x-impacts alot for field archery. I ended up using Josh's Ti 50gr inserts and halo nocks for hunting this year. Extremely impressed with the halo nocks. I shot the absolute guts out of them, more than some people probably shoot in a lifetime. Total setup with a Grim Reaper weighted 390gr. Killed a coyote with it. I then switched over to a RIP TKO setup with Josh's insert, total arrow weight 433gr. Killed a doe, so far, with a shwacker Levi edition on the front. Full pass through at 40yds with 1" entry wound and 2" exit. Dead in 3 seconds with a massive blood trail.
I’m ready to come to Spokane baby! Let’s go! I was telling my wife we should look for some property in the area, I want to replace Clem. Hunting and grinding, doesn’t get any better
I’ve always been curious about the mounts on the walls. Josh’s dad was a hell of a hunter. Would be cool to see a little “story time” videos and tell a little story behind a few deer, elk whatever. I love watching both your and Josh’s content.
Really like this video. I want to tinker with arrows more but it cost so much to just try a different set up. I have all the tools but components cost so much.
Remember it's always easier to make an arrow heavier, than it is to subtract weight. Shoot the lightest properly spined arrow shaft and adjust overall weight with components.
I still like my Tooth of the Arrow 125gr XL Solids. I am running 4mm Axis this year. Thanks for the tip on those Halo Micros! Ill be running those too.
For a .166 ID arrow (4mm) you should check out sirius archery orion you can choose all different options for inserts witch are all made by ethics and a 300 spine is only 8.09 gpi
Sounds killer, i have Ethics insert and collar combo on my VAP SS….wish they did titanium components though also. Maybe they do now but i built these almost 3 seasons ago
Thanks for all the great videos! Been on a deployment for about 3 months now and download the videos I missed when I pull in to port! Keep up the awesome work!
I’ve been waiting for a video like this! I am glad MFJJ talked through his titanium components a little more. I shot the lift 33” the other day and they had me at 31.5” draw, which means when I finally make the purchase of a new bow I will need to get new arrows. The FOC talk has gone in many directions in the past two years (how long I have been in the bow game). What is MFJJ magical FOC % and how would he go about making a cross over hunting and 3D target arrow at 31”.5 draw length? Dan I would like your input too!
I’m just starting to peak down this rabbit hole so I’ll only ask one question, what are the benefits of half outs? I think they look cool and my educated guess is it’s a way to add weight to the front of an arrow but something tells me there’s a little more to it. Love your vids guys! You’re my go to for learning more about archery.
Great video thank you for doing vap tko is what I'm tinkering with with easton titanium inserts and so far impressed definitely going to buy Josh's inserts to try
Josh should get you to shoot that straight up VAP. They are all the things that make a great 4MM, and they are bullet proof suited with the right components.
Switched from GT hunters with 125gn head to GT black label quantums, Easton 75gn insert, collar and 100gn head. Same 445 arrow weight but 190 up front on the quantum
Great video! Love the deep technical breakdowns. I’m very new to archery hunting, how does this information or the general philosophy of arrow weight change (if at all) when you start hunting smaller quicker animals such and white tail or antelope??
Firsly, white tail and antelope are very different, IMO. White tail (the majority of my experience) tend to be shorter shots (inside 30 yards) in, or near areas of tree cover, at relatively known range. Antelope tend to be more open shots that are longer by necessity and less forgiving. Generally, just know that you can drop the arrow weight a bit. Any well-made arrow over 350gr will do as long as there is a sharp, quality broadhead on the front, and as long as it flies straight. Personally, I like to run a bit heavier than that for white tail (430-450). I'd probably run on the lighter side of that (375-400) for antelope, given open ranges and longer shots, but at the end of the day, it comes down to experience (knowing when NOT to shoot) and being able to put your arrow where you are aiming. Your personal setup makes a big difference as well. Draw length and draw weight are big factors in arrow speed. I'd focus on building an arrow that is hitting at least 280FPS out of your setup for a forgiving trajectory, especially for antelope. For white tail, it is more about your pre-season scouting and shooting practice than it is about arrow speed and weight. I've killed several white tail with a 490gr arrow that starts at 266FPS. One of those was at 52 yards (this is a RARE shot, and I only took it because conditions where perfect. I don't recommend it.). That setup blows through deer, with the arrow burying itself 5+ inches into the ground on the other side. It is overkill, but it flies well. My point being that tinkering is great, but if you've done your homework (scouting, tuning, practice), any setup over 350gr can work.
Hey, I have been watching your videos for some time now. And I really like them!! I was wondering if you have heard of the broadhead KUDU points?? I would love to see you put them through your Broadhead test?? And her thoughts? They are made locally in my state, Oregon USA!! Thanks for the videos!!
They also have some 5mm arrows that are great I've been shooting there sirius Gemini witch are 8.65 gpi a 28 inch arrow with a 75 grain insert 100 grain point nockturnal and 3 bohning x3 vanes is 470 grains
i don't shoot heavy because i don't think a light arrow cant go through a cavity on a good shot, I shoot a heavy arrow because i seem to find the vertebrete and humerous and i want my arrow to blow through that. However, that is pretty impressive to blow through those big animals with a lighter arrow. I think the fact the front of the arrow diameter is wider than the shaft makes a huge difference since friction will take longer to slow it down, just like a tapered arrow.
Dan, love your videos man! Quick question tho…. Why don’t you use Sirius arrows? Especially the Sirius Orion? Would love for you to tinker with those and kind of review those. I’m sure you’d love them. Thanks for being awesome man!
I am a keep it simple kind of guy. I shoot the carnivore full length, blazer vanes, 100 gr magnus stinger. #70, 30.5 draw V3X in the upper 290s fps. Best part is i dont have to order or find special parts to build arrows. OTC
You’ve been grinding this UA-cam thing for a while. Really hope you hit 100k sooner rather than later. Videos like this really help people who want to try new things but can’t go out and buy 6 different arrows and components. Thank you
103k as of today. Moving nicely.
You and Tim C videos are some of my favorite on UA-cam
Another member of the 27" draw club here, checking in. SALUD!!!!🏹
I would give anything for a 27 inch I have a 32-1/2 and bow are hard to shop for most stop at 32.
This would be my far the best channel to win that giveaway from. You’re getting a great workout then building with mfjj. Hell of a deal.
Josh has me convinced. I’ll be slingin RIP XVs at TAW 428 grains. That’s with a 125 mega meat. Used the Mega s last year at 476 grains and blew clean through everything I hit.
Your content is awesome sir! You circle of friends and knowledge is top notch I have learned a lot watching you and mfjj. Keep it coming sir!
Thanks, will do!
Really enjoy the content and information in these type of videos. It’s very useful for building hunting setups. I’ve been using 410-425 grain setups for 15 years, and had no problems with penetration.
You’re full of sh*t or never tagged an elk then
You won’t have issues at that with penetration if you have good shot placement. If you have poor shot placement you will but that is on the hunter and their lack of practice 90% of the time. man you got to love arrow components and tinkering ! ive watched this like 4 times ,
Keep on keeping on.
Thank you!

Keep killin' it Dan!! Tons of knowledge!!!
Just built my first set of RIP XVs. 250 spine at 420 grain total weight. 319 out of my V3X33! So far really impressed with performance. Great video, keep putting out the content!

@@mountainmancaraway6431 yeah man and it’s hot during bow season u can’t let a deer lay over night
I do love the 5mm myself. But I’m only 1.5 yrs in on the the journey. Love the info thanks to you both.
Great to hear!
Great video Dan. Thank you for sharing the grind and information you do. Nice little close out line there to btw hahaha
Dan I appreciate you man! Congratulations on hitting the 100k subs now. It’s right around the corner and I am stoked for you. Appreciate the content, the pod, and especially your camp that helped me learn to be an elk hunter. Hope all keeps going well for you brother!
Awesome! Thank you!
Enjoy your videos and appreciate your help in learning archery equipment. Can't wait to see the 100k!
I shot RIP XV’s this last year on my elk trip. They’re awesome but definitely have to expect them to break. Year before I shot the X-impacts. I loved them but didn’t find a lighted nock that I loved. Awesome stuff guys, going on a mountain goat hunt in 8 months and planning to upgrade my arrow set up so this video is good timing 👍
Love to see you guys showing Day6 some love. I love those arrows.
That 3 blade blood trail speech was church 👍 totally agree.
only 300 subs away from that 100k as of right lets goo! thanks for the amazing content!
Woody's lighted nocks blow everything else away. Give them a try. They're also cheaper and have replaceable batteries.
We need to Check those out.
Good luck on the 100k, its close... 👍

Halfout with a collar is exactly what I've been looking for. Arrow shaft to halfout, halfout to collar, collar to broadhead=three points of contact.

HIT insert (no contact with end of arrow shaft) to collar and collar to broadhead=two points of contact. I'm going to take a wild guess here but three points of contact will be more forgiving on impact than two points of contact.

You deserve 100k and some
Thanks 👍
Really like this video. I want to tinker with arrows more but it cost so much to just try a different set up. I have all the tools but components cost so much.
Remember it's always easier to make an arrow heavier, than it is to subtract weight. Shoot the lightest properly spined arrow shaft and adjust overall weight with components.
I still like my Tooth of the Arrow 125gr XL Solids. I am running 4mm Axis this year. Thanks for the tip on those Halo Micros! Ill be running those too.
Perfect video to lead in to an off-season of tinkering
For a .166 ID arrow (4mm) you should check out sirius archery orion you can choose all different options for inserts witch are all made by ethics and a 300 spine is only 8.09 gpi
Sounds killer, i have Ethics insert and collar combo on my VAP SS….wish they did titanium components though also. Maybe they do now but i built these almost 3 seasons ago
Love it guys! ABT
Killer Give Away!
MFJJ: “It’s OUR podcast”. Dan: Ahh, that’s cute. - Tim Watching - *breaks his coffee cup*
Ha! It was the way Josh said it - no shade thrown at TC, we got love for everyone! -DS
agreed 👍🏻
Nice video Dan. And congrats on the channel growth! 100k by Jan 1 !!! Let's go! BTW, when you get your UA-cam plaque, shoot an arrow thru it!
New to the channel and loving the content and info! Thank you guys for putting out good stuff!
Thanks for the sub!
Great info! More of this 🤙🏻
I’m just starting to peak down this rabbit hole so I’ll only ask one question, what are the benefits of half outs? I think they look cool and my educated guess is it’s a way to add weight to the front of an arrow but something tells me there’s a little more to it. Love your vids guys! You’re my go to for learning more about archery.
Awesome video. Really enjoyed it guys!!!
Thanks so much!
Good stuff. I would run a airstrike for lite weight setup and a Kaos for a heavy setup.
Right on
Great video thank you for doing vap tko is what I'm tinkering with with easton titanium inserts and so far impressed definitely going to buy Josh's inserts to try
Thinking about doing this excact setup but shooting with fixed broadheads. Whats your experience with broadhead with the vaps
Ive been around that 430-450grn out of 70lb prime. At 275fpsish. Its been great for muleys and elk.
Love what you're doing! 🤘
Awesome info guys! I’m over here in Vancouver island and would love to make my way over there one of these days!
You should!
Josh should get you to shoot that straight up VAP. They are all the things that make a great 4MM, and they are bullet proof suited with the right components.
Im doing the RIP TKO with MFJJs 30g half out. With lighted nock 100g head etc im coming in at 420g TAW. Fast and hits hard
Keep an eye out for our 4mm arrows we are about to release soon! 🧐😎
Dude, as much as your workout would kill me I would try to survive. But I would love to have that opportunity at winning that let's go 100k
Really hope you hit 100k great videos as always
So close!
Always great videos from both of you, can we get a more in depth video on half out collars and incerts and their difference/purposes.
Love this stuff! ABT!
I can’t wait for you to get to 100k
Switched from GT hunters with 125gn head to GT black label quantums, Easton 75gn insert, collar and 100gn head. Same 445 arrow weight but 190 up front on the quantum
I still like 5mm better. It would be great to have a complete rundown with the whiteboard like that with the 5mm as well.
Ok I’ll see you at 100k!!!
waiting for you to hit 100K LFG!!
That would be an awesome give away not sure about the workout ive seen how you work out lol lookin forward to it
Killer content my doods thank you, what’s your target FOC% if you had to pick an exact %? 10% good? 15% gooder? Orrr… thanks man
15% ISH…
Great information ! keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
Yeah baby next stop 100k
Come on 100K!
I'd like to see a video with all the different after market grips available. Chris bee, elk shape, and the new ones Tim Gillingham has available.
It’s been a journey getting to 100k and there ain’t no one more deserving my dude.
Also, Can’t wait to meet Josh’s girlfriend. 😂
Legend!
They also have some 5mm arrows that are great I've been shooting there sirius Gemini witch are 8.65 gpi a 28 inch arrow with a 75 grain insert 100 grain point nockturnal and 3 bohning x3 vanes is 470 grains
Love it guys 💪🏼💪🏼
Can we get a link to the 5mm components Josh uses?
i don't shoot heavy because i don't think a light arrow cant go through a cavity on a good shot, I shoot a heavy arrow because i seem to find the vertebrete and humerous and i want my arrow to blow through that.
Have you ever looked at the Exodus .204 arrows? I'm curious what you think. Good videos. Enjoy them.
I am a keep it simple kind of guy. I shoot the carnivore full length, blazer vanes, 100 gr magnus stinger. #70, 30.5 draw V3X in the upper 290s fps. Best part is i dont have to order or find special parts to build arrows. OTC
Hey Dan, do a review of the Triple Point Clovis Helicut Broad heads! I’m curious what you think💪🏽
