Pretty simple. The target defines the test. This is a ballistic gel test. You change the target to layers of cardboard, OSB, a foam target or a fence post. Results will vary due to the type of target material, density, drag, and its design. Gel and targets are designed to stop arrows. Secondly, at this distance KE is constant across all arrow masses.

Let the facts roll. While im not into the 600+ grain setups I find 490-535 to be my area, these test into gel at point blank range are silly. Also If a animal comes in at 20 runs out to 40 when I have my single pin set at 20 im not shooting. An even Chris's shot showed he would of wounded the elk with the lighter arrow if the orange tack was the boiler room. So what are we even doing here.
I think the saddest thing is that Chris is probably unwilling to ever try 650+ in an actual hunting scenario.

For science, put the chrono out at 20 or 30 yards. Measure what the heavy vs light FPS difference is at those distances. Does the gap in FPS remain around 65, decrease, or increase? Which arrow delivers more kinetic energy at the point of contact?
Kinetic Energy = 0.5 * mass * velocity^2

@@Muskiehunter92 Making it through a round of 3D without losing all your arrows is a good place to start. There's no need to slow down 350+grain builds that leave out at 325+FPS. They are still going 300 FPS 50 yds out. They don't have brakes on them. Which many want to imply.
I went form low 410-420 even had one in the high 390s shooting a Mathews reezen it was at 318fps at 30.5 draw 71lbs. I always had arrows deflecting off ribs. fix and mechanical. Moved up to 535 and that last 4 deer I'm looking for the arrow in the dirt behind where I shot them. Bows a little slower for sure. But midwestern hunting your typically shooting within 30 yards and its still fast enough at that range. Out west I'd probably lower the weight down by at least 50 grains.
I use right around 520 and smoked one at 75 yards in the woods in wisconsin this past season. It was a perfect scenario though.

I shoot a 375 grain arrow with 28.5 inch arrow length. Bow shooting at 283 fps. 95% of kills have been clean pass through. Last one at 42 yards. Your problem is not the weight, but the broadhead your using, or your aim...

Seems to be one of the few archers who mentioned accuracy “I want to hit what I’m aiming at” I love that. People get so lost in the numbers and forget to shoot their setup. At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter. Shoot what you’re confident in and run it. Like most things, somewhere in the middle is the best of both worlds.

Love this video- Age old argument between myself and my hunting partners. I shoot 428 grain Easton ACC 340 (2 inch flex fletch 3 vanes/4 inch crest wrap/100 grain head/standard insert and nocks). My partners are all in the shoot heavy camp 550-575 grains. I have showed them that the tighter pin gaps- (we all shoot 5 pin sites for elk 20-60 yards) is much more beneficial. I have also showed them the energy comparison shooting heavy/slow vs lighter/faster is negligible. PS- I have also harvested more elk than the 3 of them combined...lol
Couldn't agree more. I fell into the heavy arrow way of thinking that the internet preaches but when my buddies and i shot a 3d course just doing range estimations, that's where the problems came to light. When my estimation was off a little bit, my shots were way off. There was less room for error for me vs my buddies shooting a lighter set up. Shot placement being so important in bow hunting and with all the variables when hunting i decided to go to a medium/light arrow set up. In addition to this revelation my buddies and i now shoot our hunting setups at local 3d courses prior to season. One its good practice, but two you find any issues that you may have with your setup prior to that buck of a lifetime popping out during season. Great Vid and best of luck this season to you all!!!

@@urbanarcher3535 but the heavier you go the less room for error so when that buck takes a few extra steps or spooks a few extra yards or you accidentally range the branch in front of your target. Your yardage being off a little dramatically affects your drop for a heavy arrow causing more bad shots. A well placed shot with a lighter arrow is better then a bad shot with a heavy arrow

IDK man I shoot 575g with a fixed blade and that has been my sweet spot for hunting. I am in Georgia and saddle hunt so my distances with that arrow have been 15-35y and I haven’t have any issues. If I was going to do TAC or a 3D course all the time I’d probably build an arrow around 450g to pick up more speed and lessen the drop.
@@urbanarcher3535 Hey man if your arrow setup works for ya and your killing it, keep it up. Don't change a good thing! Everyones different and what works for one doesn't have to work for all that's why I like these conversations because it opens up people to new ideas. I just don't like the mindset out there that you have to shoot the heaviest arrow out there with a single bevel blade or your doing it wrong because that it's just not true. I say find what works for ya and stick with it. If you have problems try something else. Bow hunting is a journey.
I'm shooting around a 550 gr arrow this year for elk. Generally I have always had a >500 gr arrow for elk shooting 60-70 lb bows. I have noticed the pin gap as I prep for this season and it has been somewhat of a concern, but I actually viewed a silver lining of having a clean miss vs a wound if I mis judge a range on the hoof in the moment. I do think if I maintain the bow i have that I will probably build some arrows that are in the 400 gr range to see what changes. At this point I'm tuned up and have invested what I can for this upcoming season so I will live with what I got!
470 grain gold tip hunter xt 300s with 50 grain insert and 100 grain heads @ 70lbs @60 yards on 31" , im punching right through a rectangular bail of hay and 24" through 1/2" plywood., if i dip below the 430grain or so its not punching nearly as hard through
608 gr for me. 200gr single bevel ironwill. Altra 250 arrows. 21% FOC!! My farthest shot in my deerwoods is 30 yards. That set up works great for me. Awesome video!
Short range shots into ballistic gelatin are not telling you anything here.
Air friction has a quadratic dependence on velocity (-f=cv²): If you double your speed, air friction will quadruple. If you measure straight out of your bow the lighter & faster arrow will carry the same amount of energy compared to the slower & heavier arrow. But the faster arrow will lose significantly more energy on its way to the target.

I personally take Aron Snyders advice and go with a “happy medium” set up.
475 grains, 160 up front (125g broadhead, 25g insert, and 10g collar, all Iron Will) 15% FOC. Bow is set at 78# with a 28” draw length. Shooting around 280 FPS.
So my arrow set up for me for total arrow weight is about 490 grains which some consider heavy and others light but personally the arrows fly great and I’m getting great velocities and accuracy with them. I’m probably going to see about putting a single bevel broadhead on in the 125-150 grain area to bump up my foc and just give me a hard hitting arrow I can grab no matter the shot angle

That would make all the difference. The heavy arrows carry more momentum down range. Roll a baseball down a hill. Roll a ping pong ball down a hill.

It's not a crazy difference between 300 and 500 grains but a faster arrow will lose more energy due to drag when going longer distances. If you're driving a Lambo at 55 mph, you're gonna get a lot better mpg than at 100mph. The further you drive, the more gas drag consumes.
The kinetic energy leaving the bow equates to a full tank of gas.

You should have re-zeroed your bow to 20 for the heavier arrow. Probably wouldn’t make much of a difference but it would be a more accurate test
Yeah the heavy arrow was definitely dropping way more then it would have if the pin was sighted in for it at 20

@@JSANDERS247 when a heavy arrow is sighted in and yardage is misjudged, it's far less dramatic than in this video because there's more initial arc in the trajectory. Don't get me wrong, there's definitely more pin gap and drop with heavy than there is with the light ones but it's not quite so outrageous.
Seems like no one ever does these test with varying distances to see how much energy each arrow carry’s over further lengths.

People who use mechanicals don't like him because he's firmly against them, and he sites studies by the ashby foundation which he does work for. However, in his videos he works with the Hunting Public guys, Elk Shape, and many other guys who work in certain fields of science like rocketry that aid in the experimenting he does
Light and heavy is subjective as your draw and poundage will change the result. Using a speed and kinetic energy calculator is a great tool to find what the most efficient arrow weight is for your set up. I'm shooting 302fps with a 535gr arrow so it's a middle weight arrow for my bow set up but gives me fast speed and over 106ft lb of energy. Going heavier my kinetic and speed goes down and you don't need anything lighter as you'll run in to tuning issues.

@@adamcap7 for arrow flight with a target that constantly moves, speed is subjectively very important. An effective mix of mass and speed I believe is the best of both worlds. Not easy for all set ups though

No need for super heavy arrows. Now, if you want to shoot over a feeder at 15 yards, build as heavy as you like and have at it. But, finding that combination for your draw length and draw weight that gives as much speed and KE (a pleasant combination of arrow weight and fps) often yields the best shooting and most reliable setup. It limits time of flight and doesn't hinder performance while still holding enough overall weight to keep an arrow on course. For most archers, in a 28"-30" draw length range at 70lbs, somewhere in that 440-500 grain arrow range seems to get one there. The longer the draw you have, the heavier you can shoot and still hold a nice speed range of 285-295fps, which I have found to be a sweet spot for me. More focus on practice and a well tuned bow with sharp broadheads lends itself well to success.

you mentioned mosquitos... run 120F water over those itchy bites as long as you can stand and it will eliminate the itch for 12-24hrs. i can't stress how life changing of a remedy this is. obviously its a painful process, but go as hot as your comfortable with. the hotter ive gone the better / longer it works.

I’d say shooting an arrow weight that gets you to your ideal speed is more important than weight. The speed difference is where the drop variation comes into play. Some people can sling 500 grains at 300fps
I preach this too. Weight is relative. A 500grain arrow for a 27” draw just isn’t realistic.
This is my mindset too, 100%. People get soo caught up in arrow weights or getting rocket speeds its become mind numbing to read comments online. After shooting a ton of different arrow weights and speeds for competition, I always find the best flying and most accurate arrows are 270-290 fps... So when its time to hunt, I build an arrow that will shoot around 280 fps with whatever poundage my bow is. Right now this puts me at a 460 gn arrow and 68.5 lbs draw... happy medium. Hits hard, still flies fairly flat to reach out there if need be.... and most importantly, it is almost as accurate as my target set up.
Now for the people that cant use their brains, if I were to go hunt cape buffalo, I would be using an arrow above 600 for sure. There is not a one size fits all in hunting... its like going coyote hunting with a 45-70 or a .223 vs a buffalo with a 45-70 and .223 ... you will take the opposite gun depending on the animal... so yes, there is nuance when it comes to the extremes. For the average whitetail hunter though, just go as heavy as you can WHILE still maintaining close to 280 fps and you are golden.

For most things in life, a middle of the road, balanced approach will work to your favor more often than being all the way out to one extreme will. Archery is no different.
One thing that would be interesting is long draw length vs shorter with light vs heavy arrows. I get crazy instability at distance, unless I'm shooting a heavy FOC (12 to 10%.) 32 3/4" draw length 76 pound draw. I know that it would require different shooters but still an interesting case to see. Either way I appreciate seeing this after conversations with my friends during TAC. Thanks man!

Are you saying, you never had the desire to see what that 1200 grain would do against a moose?
I know today's fad is all about FOC, speed, weights etc. All I focus on is what arrow/broadhead combination is most accurate at my maximum distance for killing animals. It's simple, accuracy is more important than anything else.
Chris, how do you apply thumb pressure to the front of the UV button, without any interference with the thumb mechanism going off? I hope this makes sense.
I’d like to see a test at longer distances and with harder materials. Mechanicals shine in plain tissue and light arrows shine at closer ranges. Heavier arrows just carry energy longer and are better on harder materials like bones. I’m definitely a 500-600 grain guy with fixed broadheads. I don’t claim to be an expert by any means but looking at the data. I’ve seen heavy and fixed is the best setup for all animals in North American.

Hear me out… we could end this debate once and for all if all the super TAC guys would admit that THE number 1 reason they prefer lighter arrows is so they can shoot longer distances without running out of sight tape.
Add a layer to this by realizing that expandables are now making a comeback-could this be because those same guys are struggling to get good broadhead flight because they are using underspined, light arrows???
Much to say and much to argue here, but science goes out the window when we realize we are making decisions based on marketing from arrow manufacturers and buying into biases from long range TAC archers.
I’m not heavy or light and I’ve killed many elk with both (I prefer heavier), but what I can tell you with 100% certainty is that we are all getting shafted by marketing.
Your penatration test was good but you need to do the same at 20-30 yards. Where most shots are taken. The heavy arrow should penatrate more.

He has a 28 inch draw and 73lb so he wasn't to ibo spec
also if a bull comes into 20 and runs out to 40 at full draw....I'm not shooting the bull. period! even if I got a screaming bow I'm not risking guessing. Also the gap on both arrows at 40 are 100% misses, or wounded.

All due respect but you gotta put these arrows on their own shot line. You’re zeroed for the light arrow. Shoot at 20. You hit the nail. Then put the heavy arrow on its own shot line where it also hits the nail at 20. Then step back and misjudge yardage and measure the difference then.
There is a South African guy with a channel "outdoors with travis" he built a 2000+gr arrow just for giggles.

You proved what everyone else on YT has proven, good job. The ballistic gel will stop arrows no matter what broadhead you shoot.
The “fad” is light arrows. Looking at the history of archery (just a few thousand years), arrows have always been heavy until carbon arrows arrived 30 years ago. Regardless of your opinion, just make sure you can hit what you’re aiming at.

medium setup 460/480gn + micro diameter shaft with large 2blade head super sharp possibly single bevel so the arrow keep spinning on the impact and take less rotational shock when hit the target, makes a spiral wound channel which is quite effective, comparable a 3 blade head
spot on chris...the only other thing not mentioned is animal drop ...most of my hunting is deep south...reading game body language helps but...lighter way better for accurate clean kills...the deer down here in s.c. have cat like reflexes and with a slow arrow you shoot where the deer was ! also dramatic drop in woods setting more chance your gonna hit a limb or trash ...just saying to each his own

i did the opposite, when carbon arrows came out i was soooo happy to get rid of those old heavy aluminum logs we were all shooting back then. i don't miss those old heavy aluminum arrows one bit.

He's a better Archer than most so mechanicals work for him as his shot placement is usually right on the money hence no need for fixed blades. It's why most professional 3d archers hunt with mechanicals. They just put the arrow in the heart and it dies

One big issue with this test is that the variables aren't controlled. A more appropriate test would be to setup two nearly identical arrows in outside diameter, component, and spine. For example - use a super light RIP XV and a super heavy gpi micro with the same OD. Then glue on the same outsert.
In gel, the surface area of the arrow is the primary factor in the test. If you normalized these diameters, you would have had next to no difference between them.
Now on an animal it likely would be very different.
This is very relevant. The question would be the energy produced at distance. There would be a range that the heavier arrow will carry velocity better but that's likely to be beyond reasonable hunting range. Within 80yds I'll take a faster, flatter shot over a slow bomb
If anything, this video gives reasons to consider using a fixed blade broadhead and a multi-pin sight. 😂
a 4 pin sight with a 450 grain arrow with a cut on contact fixed blade will always be the best all around hunting set up 👍👍

@@eastcoastwoodsman83573 pin adjustable with 20-40. Then can adjust and still have drop pins just have to find the yardage. I can be set at 60 yards and still have close to a 40,50 yard pin. Then a 450ish grain arrow. I used to be all fix pin. Never got on the adjustable train till the multiple pin sliders got more common.
At least a 3 pin scope. Preferably on a slider,lol. IMO, 280 to 300 fps is optimal with a 425-450 grain finished fixed blade arrow.

Just curious why you choose the deadmeate over the megameat? Is it personal preference or is there a technical reason? Also do you shoot 100s or 125s?
I use what my local bow shop owner recommends at 430-450 grains. In 2017 he had the Oregon record for largest Big Horn Sheep. It's since been broken, but I trust his opinion.

Hey Chris! Any tips/advice for someone wanting to get into Bow hunting that has a longer draw? I feel like for most people they can maybe get something a bit less expensive to start, but for me being 6’8 and having a 34” draw, it’s tough to not spend an arm and a leg… Anything you’d suggest?

I just aim for a sight tape I like to be able to shoot 100 yards with my bow to do that I needed about 287fps so I added weight until I hit that ended up at 480 grains +-2 grains I use tooth of the arrow broadheads 125 grain my buddy has the same bow we can both shoot 100 yards but my broadheads go through my foam block his arrows same weight with kudu heads go about 6-7” in so I think sharpness matter more than a couple grains everyone is shooting a 700 grain single bevel and it’s crazy I shot a big deer at 86 yards double lung didn’t even know he was hit so I think people just like to argue but confidence does make a huge difference in archery so as long as someone is confident that’s good enough
Doesn't a heavier arrow lose less velocity downrange, fight wind better, is quieter, etc? Shooting a huge gel block at 60 yards would be interesting :). We all know by now that 450-500gr is enough arrow out of a reasonably fast compound and the sweet spot. I do have some 593gr day six arrows that I occasionally use in my Hoyt RX4 Turbo (65#) around 246fps, so it's interesting to see the speed out of that bow as well at 70.
my 500gr arrows at 300fps from a 70lb bow do similar pentration in gel as 370gr arrow at 290fps from a 60lb bow. shoot them into a tree still a fake thing, shows an arrow that gets stuck in a tree vs the one that bounced off.cardboard and gel, hard to get mechanical to open and stay open in gel gives false depths since the friction is lower. proves why mechanical lose more deer though then fixed blades

To the recoil part I remember when I was like 10 when I had my pro comp elite at 35lbs 19” draw I decided to shoot the old black xx75 27s and I could really feel the recoil almost pushed me back🤣

The light arrow had a better wound channel though and opened up fully. It looked like the other heavier arrows didn't open up all the way

Every setup has a time and a place where it performs best. The video idea was great for views and comments, but a better video idea would be detailing if I shoot weight x and am hunting animal y and my shots are within x-y yards would i want heavy or light? Again… time and a place for everything. Keep up the content !
I'd want to see all the penetrative tests at like 60 or 70 yards through a shoulder blade. All these are pretty neck and neck if you get a perfect shot, we need the contingencies for imperfect shots.

No idea fps but haven't heard any complaints from my targets about my bows speed.
Haven't found an animal in the continent that can stop the stick, out run it, or live after taking it.
Dropped a Texas 8, 52 yards with the phase last year. Same sight.
I'll let you know what it drops if I get shots this Texas trip in December looking for audat, axis, and white tails. So all mid range shots I can handle with one or two pins and minimal thinking.
When I'm not traveling I'm guilty of sitting in a saddle and molly whopping Kentucky/Ohio/Indiana/Pennsylvania white tails within 40.

Keep in mind most 2 sided fixed blades you really have to be 280fps and under or it can start to plane and enhance your tweaks significantly. Currently shooting 525gr at 282. I’m able to get away with a heavier arrow and I will probably bump it to 540 550 cause I do see flyers if I tweak anything in the shot

Another would be proper arrow for your setup draw length and poundage , a 27” draw length at 70 pounds to a 32” draw length at 70 pounds better be a different arrow weight if both are the same on the front end 👍✌🏻🇺🇸
I went from 650 grains in 2020 down to 390 grains for the 2024 season. Heavy arrows have cost me more opportunities on deer than they have helped me. Your mileage may vary.

Throw a normal weight arrow in the test, (425 - 475) grains. This would give better data points to people who haven't done their own testing.

Excellent vid. The name of the game is killing the animal. Whatever is the most consistent at that is the way to go. I still hunt more that I stand hunt. A lighter setup that helps alleviate misjudged yardages is what works best for me.
Bow hunting isn't about how far but rather how close if your a good bow hunter you will never need to shoot over 30 and that's even pushing it
