*SPOILER ALERT* To me, the best scene in this movie is when Gilbert comes back home after hitting Arnie, and as soon as Arnie sees him, he runs to climb the tree and "hide", like nothing happened. The whole family is mad at Gilbert for having lost control, but Arnie, even though he was the victim, doesn't even need Gilbert to apologise to forgive him. He doesn't forget that Gilbert has been taking care of him for all of his life. Arnie is one of the most touching characters I've ever seen in a movie. Superb.
+Dk Kevorkian Hahahahah, that's just too cute ^^ I'd live with my sisters too if they weren't studying so far away. I'll probably tell them that too in a few years :P But, for now... We are not going anywheeere! ;)
Equally touching is how Gilbert simply embraces Arnie when he jumps down from the tree and says, "You scared me, don't scare me like that," as he always says, but this time with a different meaning. This is a very touching movie.
Such a good track. Very memorable movie and one of the best I've seen. I like Johhny Depp in this one. Not like his newer movies. All he does is act "goofy". This is gold. Dicaprio is supberb as usual. So young here but his acting is flawless.
For me is a kind of cruel message, there are times where we can not admit some things because they could hurt others and hurt ourselves too. But at the end some tragedies are needed to go on or to get deppresed. In this case, it is cruel to say but their mom was huge burden (not a joke) and they got free to do whatever they wanted.
Amitabha Chakrabarti This movie portrays the real America. Hollywood is disconnected from the heartland. I don't think the critics understood this story.
The music was composed by Swedish composer Björn Isfält. He composed several beautiful soundtracks including My life as a dog (Mitt liv som hund), A Swedish love story (En kärlekshistoria) and Änglamark. He sadly passed away at age 54 in 1997.
I wish i could go back to live in the 90's, i was a small kid that time but it will always stay like a treasure for me. No smart phones, no social media everything is about connecting to people purely.
I know its years later but does anyone get this weird feeling in their chest when they listen to this? It feels like a nostalgic tune that brings back memories of a simple life but also a sad one with missed opportunities. I dont know it just sounds so nostalgic and sad :(
This movie is based on real people. Families just like this exist, and honestly in real life it's way more disfunctional. Sometimes real life is sadder than emotional dramas
As the gilbert in one of those families, yes, this film still romanticises a lot about this life, but oh my there's some raw bits in it that just make me feel so seen and I cry every single time I watch it, my favorite film (and book) of all time
Best song I've ever heard...there are messages in the movie. This is a very meaningful movie. I watch it again and again and cry. I feel the twists and messages in the music.
The music is made by Swedish composer Björn Isfält. Before his death he made alot of soundtracks, perhaps best known in Sweden for the soundtrack to the movie "Änglagård".
Capturing a time in place takes a lot of hard work and the risk of money. Old Shoe investors today don't want to risk money unless its a sequel, a prequel, or a remake. But I'd like to visit the city in Texas where this movie was made. The movie has burned itself indelibly into it.
Robin Smith I studied film production in college. big school in socal. the answer I got most from the academics is that these stories aren't well understood by foreigners. marvel movies make the most money because people in Asia pay big to watch them.
I have recently broken up with my girlfriend and am missing her more and more every day. I am in the city I moved to at 20 to work towards becoming a filmmaker. Now, 5 years later, I am on a bench in the park, taking a break from delivering Uber Eats orders. I spend weeks on end editing UA-cam videos until I have videos I am really proud of and I can barely break 100 views. I am right now at the lowest point I remember being in the past 10y of my life. Listening to this song and reading the other comments here is pulling out so many emotions in me. This movie means the world to me and this music does something weird to my emotions. Terrifying and emotional. Hope that whoever reads this and whoever listens to this score will get something out of it. Much Love Jonko
Easily one of my favorite movies of the 90s and maybe all time, the ending never fails to leave me floored. DiCaprio and Juliette Lewis' best performances to date and one of Johnny Depp's best after Ed Wood and Fear & Loathing. This epic theme over the end credits is pure magic every time.
Hardly his best. The man is just a genius. Tough to choose one in particular. I think his best is probably Catch me if You Can and his most underrated is Aviator
@@purvathakkar6338 I think it's very hard to choose because he has always been an amazing actor and there are a few movies of him for which he could have won an Oscar.
How did Leo not win an Oscar for this?? Absurd. Arnie Grape, one of the best performances I have ever seen from any actor, along with Daniel Day Lewis in "My left foot."
I loved the movie since I saw it. I keep watching it all the time. The story, the characters and the movie overall is one of the best cinema of all times.
No, matter what What's Eating Gilbert Grape will forever be the best movie no matter how many other movies that will be made in the future What's Eating Gilbert Grape will be my favorite.
Just watched today for the first time, just a reminder HOW AMAZING IN THE 90S WERE AND how this is what cinema is about. Great movie all around!!!!!!!! Amazing performances and music supreme!!!!!!!
This song always makes me feel a type of nostalgia that I can't explain. Like I wish this song was the setting for planet earth, peace, love and harmony.
Love the movie for its wonderful, endearing humanity, I saw it years ago and just recently five more times. Great performances by Depp, DiCaprio, and Darlene Cates and the rest of the cast first rate performers. The theme music really fits in well. Not many movies today are as genuinely charming as this one still is, 20 years later.
Then I must now read the book as well. It must be truly amazing to surpass the movie itself, which I rate 10 stars out of 5 for its Humanity, Sincerity, and Empathy, the best movie now on Netflix, with no violence nor sleaziness whatsover. If there are 'Trekkies' Id like to become that counterpart for this movie--so, a"Gilbert Grapie" please make me!
PHILIP MATHEWS haha I could pretty much recite every line. And I think it would be cool if all of the gilbert grape fans took some airstream camper trailers cross country to Iowa in a convoy.
So did I. I cried almost anytime leo spoke because my stupid brother in law told me he died at the end. I was so relieved to find out he was wrong. And I still bawled.
A great movie. DiCaprio was simply mesmorizing. Of four actors who have played people with disabilities that come to mind, Hoffman in Rain Man, Tom Hulce in Dominic and Eugene, Sean Penn in I am Sam, and DiCaprio in WEGG, it makes me realize how political Hollywood is. Penn was very good, Hoffman was entertaining, Hulce was amazing, but DiCaprio's performance was inspirational.
I still don't understand why this movie doesn't get Oscar ? This movie is one of the greatest movie of all time and it's really a motivational movie which teaches to how survive in this life and also encourage to hard working.
I really feel so happy when Gilbert and Arnie gone with Becky to anywhere they want. They are free and this is what Gilbert's want. Great movie and will be always.. ❤️

That's the thing with brothers. Every fight I got into with my brother, we forgave each other usually before everyone else stopped being mad.

I wholeheartedly agree this is the best movie Leo ever did.
It’s like a bittersweet
Certainly; coming from you it s an honor.
this movie inspired me to stop wasting time, go back to school, propose to my girlfriend and start a family. life is precious.
Lol why did you leave school ?

Darlene was amazing. Funny how the movie took place in Iowa but was filmed in Texas.
Di Caprio did a good job playing "Arnie"! It's really not easy to play an disabled human....he had to get an oscar for that back then!!
This movie brought tears to my eyes when their mama passed away I cried and cried
I am a big fan of Leonardo Dicaprio. Great actor.
: It's not goodbye, Arnie. : It's good night!
haha. definitely it has to be good 'something'....lol
i am going to play this over and over again and sit with myself. it's just one of those movies.
The most beautiful movie music that I can remember. What an incredible, underrated masterpiece.
Beautiful music...so soothing
Just watched this for the first time. Great feel good movie! Timeless for sure.
how did he not get oscar for dis lol fuken gr8
i agree with you
B Jay Who cares, the Academy is full of pedophiles anyways.
Tommy Lee Jones won that year.
The real reason? He was too young & new. Oscars rarely go to those sorts. Ya gotta pay your dues, according to the Academy.
bjönr also did the score for ronja the robbers daughter.its beautiful beyond words.and he continued like that with gilbert grape.he was a genius.
Goodbye! No, it's not good-bye arnie. Because good-bye means forever. And it's not forever so it just goodnight, Goodnight Gilberrt! Goodnight buddy 💙
