It's absolutely insane how talented DiCaprio was THIS EARLY in his career. I'd actually argue that he was a lot more dimensional here than in a lot of his later films.

I remember being absolutely disgusted by her when this movie came out. I was also a child at the time and didn't understand. I watch this movie beginning to end a few years ago as an almost 40 year old man and dang I misjudged her when I had child eyes. I was so saddened to hear of her passing and I hope you've be able to find some comfort for the loss.of.your friend

It's incredible this was her first acting role. Everything felt completely grounded and real in this movie including her, even in the more intense or emotional scenes. IMO she, Depp and DiCaprio are all tied for best acting in the film. (I like Lewis great too, but her character is a little more Pixie Dream Girl.)

My mother and her became pen pals. She unfortunately had a weight problem as well ( thesteroids didn't help her any) and Darlene wrote her many emails. I only found out after my mother passed in 2007 while looking through her computer for photo's and documents to remember her. I love knowing my mom had such a supportive friend in her final years... being bed ridden, she felt so isolated. I know it must have meant a lot to her.

@blazinjedi2008 i saw her as a beautiful soul even as a 7th or 8th grader when i first saw and loved this movie, i could see the real person behind her character that she played very well, and she had such a gentle beautiful soul, and years later they confirmed that in the making of and commentary of the dvd release.

yeah, in the movie and vibe of the whole thing they needed that small town school band that was mediocre at best, they couldn't have little ''endora Iowa'' have any excitement of great things like super talented musicians there that, might give off the vibe of - ''hey the town sucks, but they got his band that kicks ass ! you gotta go see em''.... its supposed to depict just a dead-end uber boring town.

Everyone says “This was a snub”, we have to be real though. This same year “Schindler’s List”, “Philadelphia”, “Jurassic Park”, and “In the Name of the Father” all came out and were HEAVILY nominated. When you compare the roles, yes he did very well BUT, no he wasn’t robbed. In fact I don’t think he was EVER robbed of an Oscar, every single time he was nominated there were better contenders against him. Except for the time he won.

Loved the reaction. This was the first movie that made me cry when I was a kid. My mom thought there might be something wrong with me since I didn't cry watching Bambi, but it was just...my mom isn't a doe. My mom was however, fairly overweight (though not obese), and I had a severely retarded uncle that I had to help care for after school, so I was able to connect with these characters a lot more.

There's nothing like Juliette Lewis in the 90s. She kills in everything she's in. Pretty much all the early Depp and Dicaprio stuff is great as well. This one is a hard watch for me, hits real close to home, but it's a top-tier film. They don't make stuff like this anymore and it's a crime.
If you haven't seen it, another great Jonny Depp film that seems to get overlooked from the same era is Benny & Joon. It's a nice bit of Depp being a weirdo before Fear & Loathing/Pirates seem to have stuck him into Ultra Weirdo mode. Another 90s classic for sure.

I watched this film a few months ago when my mom was dying in the hospital. I would work from home on days and would spend every night in the waiting area outside ICU, mostly scrolling thr phone to distract myself. Days in and days out! I didn't have anyone to tell how I felt. In those many days I could so much relate with this character. Sometimes really all you need is a hug!

This movie portrays so many of our families that have so many pressures. Father figure being deceased, mother couldn't cope without him, and all the pressures being a mother of so many kids, with one being a special needs person. Oldest teen son feels obligated to take on ALL the responsibilities of keeping the entire family afloat. He truly loves his brother with special needs, that requires so much of his time, and attention. Being just barely older than his brother, he also has the pressures of his own needs, and desires. The truly saving grace for not only Gilbert, but his brother Arnie is his new girlfriend Becky, who is a truly understanding, and loving soul. It is so hard to watch that their mother makes the choice she does to finally lay down in a bed, knowing she couldn't breathe in that position...thinking her passing would ease her kids pain, embarrassment, and their mental anguish is so sad. The fact that they burned the house to bury her to prevent her being a spectacle for the nosey, and cruel townsfolk that saw her as a joke; is something that is just indescribable in it's emotional impact. THIS FILM is aptly named, yet it really shouldn't be "Whats eating Gilber Grape", I think it would be even more aptly named "What isn't eating Gilbert Grape" as JL said he had SO MUCH on his plate. What phenomenal mental strength he had. At least in the end all the kids apparently had a place/situations to move forward into, and best of all Gilbert, and Arnie BOTH went with Becky, and it appears they will be OK going forward. SO many emotions touched me by this film. Johnny Depp, Leo Dicaprio, and many of the cast members did a fantastic job. Great reactions JL....loved it. Great job as always JL, and Blank...great edit as well my man. BRIAN

I have a son who’s autistic, and although he’s high functioning he has still had his moments for the worst over the past few years and I just thank God that he’s still here and has a village and his dad who cares for him. Leo and Johnny did an amazing job in their roles. The part with Arnie in the tub just killed me. I was mad at his mother because she was at home and couldn’t even get her kid out of the tub and she blamed Gilbert for it! And the wife he was messing with was straight up OC! And when they arrested Arnie she then decided to go and take care of her kid! 🤦🏾‍♀️ Then when Gilbert hit Arnie! 😩 Leo was also in a film called “Basketball Diaries”. I think you’d like it.

If you want to check out another Juliette Lewis movie, I would highly recommend "The Other Sister." It's such a beautiful story, with so many emotions. It's funny, it's sad, it's heartwarming, and so inspiring too. Juliette, as well as her co-stars acted their arses off. In my opinion, she should have won an oscar that year. I think you'd really love it.
