I am a software and computer game developer... I re-developed the Mortal Komba 1 game because I played it when I was 13 years old and so far I love it and care about it... Thank you, Ed Boone, for this wonderful work ❤
It was mind-blowing for the time. I was about 11 when the first Mortal Kombat came out, and it was everywhere. The MK franchise in the early-mid 90s wasn't just "successful" or "extremely popular", it was a worldwide phenomenon. The 90s was an amazing decade for gamers. The good old days. I'm extremely grateful that I got to experience it myself.
@@DeadPixel1105 same here, used to ride our bikes to the Arcade all the time when I was 11-12 and play Mortal Kombat and SF2. They had MK on those big huge screen machines. Everybody was gathered around playing it and watching it.
Se tenía el Concepto de que los VideoJuegos eran solo para niños, me intriga ver la cara de los que decían eso al ver juegos como GTA, Red Dead Redemption, MK11 Resident Evil Entre Otros
MKII was my first M rated game (because they sweat in MK on the SNES). I was like 5. And the only thing that got my mom to let me play is because I already saw it being played in the arcade. I didn't even understand the concept of violence, it was just awesome!
i'm just staring at the video and i don't know what to feel. those were some amazing fucking days. such a good game, such a good concept, and what memories it offered!
Same, they were having fun making it too. It's not like nowadays where everything is so corporate driven in the game world. Yea they wanted to make money, but in reality they were having fun first and foremost while making a new and original creation.
I remember playing this at a local pool hall back in 1992 when I was like 13. All of us would bring out scraps of paper to write down all the moves and fatalities and practice. I've must of pumped endless quarters into playing this game. Such memories!
Nothing against the new Mortal Kombat games, I love 'em to death, but the digitized sprites did have a major effect on how those early games felt. It gave them this gritty, creepy vibe that I don't think I've really seen anywhere else.
I honestly prefer these kind of graphics (the realism caused by filming actual people) and wish they would go back to this. The new graphics for so many games, although they are getting REALLY good, still have this cartoony aspect that this game never had.
+Brandon Tackett I know what you mean. This is what separated MK from SF back in the day. MKX is phenomenally awesome in the graphics department. But I can't help but miss these actors doing all this stuff as opposed to CG.
Remy Lov - to be honest, Pit Fighter did this before MK so when MK came out, most people were already familiar with the technique of digitizing live actors due to Pit Fighter
I remember crowding around this arcade game before school at the bodega across the street. Funny to think about little kids paying in to play the best player, like a bunch of old men at a pool hall. Then when it came to home systems, seeing the commercials for it, the feeling of anticipation for the release...what an awesome time to be a kid and a gamer! Not many things excite me in the same way anymore. Pathetic? Probably. But to me, those are some great memories.
+xFeeder84 but see, that would be a bitch to do the special effects on real life people footage. Much easier to work with 3D tools than painfully rotoscoping every frame of blood, guts etc.
Yeah, agreed. Digitized graphics - to me - give something a rather grungy and interesting feel to it. The first game I played as a kid was Mortal Kombat 2 on Genesis, and my God, those graphics still give me some chills. I think the games just felt more real, like Midway had intended, and it gives a really good presentation to the first few games. I mean, in Deadly Alliance, you pull someone's skeleton out (Sub-Zero), it's like, "eh", but if you did it in MK3 (Kano), you're like, "Wow - FUCK!"
@xtrmst_012 Eh, trust me, after X, you're not missing anything, really. Stick to the fan games, like MKP, to really keep the vibe going, if you want something modern-retro. :)
@xtrmst_012 I feel that, I think after Armageddon, the series should have just... ended... it would have been a hell of a lot more graceful, considering what happened to it now... Yeah, I feel the hardest part of learning how to code and work with games, especially on an amateur level, is finding the right resources and help. Personally, I'd say if you're still interested, I'm sure Mortal Kombat Addict on UA-cam would be more than happy to give you some leads on how to work in MUGEN, if you try to get in touch with him. :) www.youtube.com/@MKAddict
@xtrmst_012 Ha, no problem, mate. If you ever need some lo-fi jazz or moody ambiance/noise, I’m always down, and can do it for free. Good luck out there, though. :)
hey nice video.. im just wondering can i use this video? im making a mortal kombat misteries video, hope you respond so soon!!! thanks!!!!! il give you the credits
Wish they would use these digitized real actors again with todays technology for the next MK game, just think how incredible it could look and it would bring back that gritty MK1, MK2, MK3 feel back with todays technology and it would seperate it from the other 3d and 2d animation fighters.
Ha, Kano's vertical jump kick was way more impressive in real life! Must have cut those twist frames for a reason. Also interesting to see they had planned to have a crouching low kick that had a different animation. That appeared for the first time in MKII.
i was hoping to get some insight as to why cage is the only character in the game with no idle laying position, he looks like he's about to stand even after a ko
Man this is one of the most amazing moments in my life. Daniel Pesina replied to my comment. You know how long I have been playing Mortal Kombat! Mortal Kombat is like my father, my friend. I feel honoured. By the way. My favourite Mortal Kombat slang is, "You will never win!" It's counter intuitive, but that's a big motivation.
Besides Boon, Tobias, Forden and the rest of the technical team, the ones that really made the game possible were the mo-cap actors. They were the real stars here by giving the MK games their distinctive look. The 3D games are also great, and I like 'em a lot, but they lost that special something that made the 2D MKs (MKM:SZ included) so unique: the digitalized graphics of real actors.
It's funny just how the reporter is making a fool of himself and making all those dumb questions while the the MK Staff is taking his job seriously. It's like seeing The Office for some reason.
2:47 "this isnt really meant for kids though is it?" "Actually it is". Lol as a kid I played all sorts of violent games but funny knowing the controversy it caused
"Put the video in a computer" = put he frames we need into our game engine just like sprites but instead of pixel art, these are jpegs. And the animate at about 18 frames per second.
Being a smart guy, I realise this isn't the making of. The game is made. This is a publicity video. It's still good because we're seeing a reenactment of how it was made.
@mlopinto2k1 They do use Motion Capture today. In fact they use it more nowadays than they ever have in the past, in movies, as well as videogames. And it's almost exclusively used in conjunction with the "3D bullshit" you seem to dislike. Although,"Motion Capture"wasn't what was going on in this video. This process has never been given an official name, to my knowledge, but the product is called "Digitized Sprites". The end result is only a 2D image, so it has no application in most games today.
From Vietnam with all world play mk 1 in 1992 are bêst game ever from all countries: Africa, America, Australia, Asia, Europe and North Pole or South Pole 9000 years later maybe last mk games❤family graudiant and love
When I did some checking I found something resembling what he said in relation to the second movie, I think it's a fair bet that he just got the movie and the game mixed up.
This seems very unlikely, considering that they made digitized games all the way into the 32bit era. Also I found no evidence of this, you'd think something like that would be pretty big news. I did however find that the director of one of the films sued Midway, claiming to own the rights to many of the characters.
THAT WAS BLOOD! ... Boon- "Yeah..right.."
"This isn't ment for kids..."
"Yeah, Mortal Kombat is for kids" :v
lololol

Man, it would have blown my mind to see this as a kid.

lol
+Volklin it is the 90s hahaha
"Is it for kids?"
"Actually it is." The 90's
He was shocked because when this game came out, blood and gore was very uncommon.

The only thing to understand is that when it comes to violence, make sure you don't do the same thing; otherwise, you'll get in trouble.
Played it as a kid all the time at the arcade 🤷♂️
Johnny's split punch is giving me my LYFE right now. I can't imagine doing a move like that over and over until it's perfect.
I never thought I'd see Johnny Cage wearing a hoody, helping out Kano get his positions right on a miniature flight of stairs
i'm just staring at the video and i don't know what to feel. those were some amazing fucking days. such a good game, such a good concept, and what memories it offered!

Reporter: "So these are video games, not pinball correct?" Tobias: "Correct" (His look is priceless. Like No SHIT you fuckin dickweed.)
I'm like "is this 1993 or 1983"? Who would ask such a question?
This is the first game on the first console I ever had and it's just amazing to see now that this is how they made the game. Mind-blown.
Nothing against the new Mortal Kombat games, I love 'em to death, but the digitized sprites did have a major effect on how those early games felt. It gave them this gritty, creepy vibe that I don't think I've really seen anywhere else.
this was the first mortal kombat game, what do you expect a high studio with advanced equipment right away?
YES!!!
Where did you get this? This is gold man! What I really want to watch is the "Making of Mortal Kombat II".
mortal kombat 1,2,and 3 was WAY ahead of its time
Guitar Kid How?
BelatedGamer because they take vidieo and put it in the game
Guitar Kid Prince of Persia did similar things.
Absolutely
So awesome to find this video, I played MK1 so much back in the day!
21:29 was awesome. It's cool to imagine these people as the real characters doing shoots, but being so down to Earth, hahaha!
"So, this isn't really meant for kids, is it?"
"Well, actually, it is."
"Oh my god!!! He just ripped that guys heart out!!!"
This should be in the teached in school... pure HISTORY !!
After 30 years. Mortal kombat will always be excellent.
Man these dudes were so uncoordinated. I don't know how it turned out to be such an awesome game :D
god i really would like to go back to these times. it was so much better and simpler back then.
I honestly prefer these kind of graphics (the realism caused by filming actual people) and wish they would go back to this. The new graphics for so many games, although they are getting REALLY good, still have this cartoony aspect that this game never had.
Just wait. MkX is in uncanny valley right now, but the next few games are gonna kick it up another notch.
+Brandon Tackett I know what you mean. This is what separated MK from SF back in the day. MKX is phenomenally awesome in the graphics department. But I can't help but miss these actors doing all this stuff as opposed to CG.
There's always Streets of Fury EX

Wow. It's so cool to see the actual recordings of the moves I've seen thousands of times in the game :p
0:45 Ho-Sung Pak from Jackie Chan's epic "Drunken Master II" !!!
and WMAC Masters!

holy fuck, thats amazing when you can expand your memories of MK1 arcade with this footage.
That was really cool to see.
This was a real treat to watch.
I think it will be great if they do the motion real characters again in the new MK with the technology it will be the best!
xFeeder84 there are 3d cameras so this would work.
xFeeder84 I think they do, I think mkx is full motion capture
+xFeeder84 but see, that would be a bitch to do the special effects on real life people footage. Much easier to work with 3D tools than painfully rotoscoping every frame of blood, guts etc.
+xFeeder84 The canceled mkhd would of been awesome
It just isn't mk to me if its just cartoony graphics.
THIS IS AMAZING!!
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE THAN THIS!!!!
PLEASE POST THE OTHERS CARACTERS TOO!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
It's so funny how back in the day blood was rarely seen in games. Now every game has some intense brutal bloodsheet and nobody gives a damn anymore
"That was blood!?"
Ed Boon: *"yeah right... Lot's of blood 😀"*
I remember, that back then it was awesome. Nostalgia ;P
"This isn't really meant for kids though either, is it?"
"Ahh, actually it is"
hahah nice, paradise for fighting gamers and animators game dev. ^^
@2:46 "It really isn't made for kids is it"? "Ugh... well actully it is". 😆

High Definition 3D Photograph texture with minimal compression laid over motion-capped 3D models is where they need to go next. Make it so!
hey nice video.. im just wondering can i use this video? im making a mortal kombat misteries video, hope you respond so soon!!! thanks!!!!! il give you the credits

Yes, he did, news reporter... Yes, he did... :)
MK was better using real people instead of computer graphics they should make a MK like this again but 3D cool rare video

It's almost such an simple tech they use here. I love it.
I like how they use the Genesis music at about 1 min in.
Twitter made me come here
"Oh my God, you just ripped his heart out." - Heh. That was only the beginning.
AWESOME! Thanks for sharing!!!!
Looking back at old days now you see the worldwide the sucess the MK is.
Ha, Kano's vertical jump kick was way more impressive in real life! Must have cut those twist frames for a reason. Also interesting to see they had planned to have a crouching low kick that had a different animation. That appeared for the first time in MKII.

LOL thanks

Thought I was the only one, I remember that too.
this makes me feel like playing mk1 again
Fun Fact: the original idea for mortal kombat was to be a game based on Jean Claude Van Damm hence Johnny Cage looks like Van Damm in blood sport.
@BDMachinimas They have to make the moves easy for an old man. (But of course, Lui Kang's actor who played Tsang Shung.)
These people learned how to fight from acting for a guy in the arcade
@DenOfVipers what do you mean? They still use MoCap...
did they ever make a making of mortal kombat 2?
Actually isn't those videos are from the Midway's collection 2 or something, for PS2?
I wish there was more characters in this video
@jonykakuyo Im gunna go make some cheese soup. I forget who invented it, but if you're ever in a bind, it works great for spotty recoveries.
Johnny Cage actor makes Sub-zero(and scorpion too) , he said in the beginning of the video.
too bad warner forbid him to upload the other videos. I would LOVE to see classic scorpion and subzero in action as well as rayden.

3:10 new character for mortal kombat 11 with aqua from mortal kombat project
@OZZIEWARRIORWVHS I think so. I know there was a making of Mortal Kombat Tour.
Elizabeth Malecki (Sonia Blade) e Ho Sung Pak (Liu Kang) onde e como estão hoje?
Im so fan of liu kang and johnny cage
fuck a combo. just slug it out till someone stays down. good shit.
@critThreat well, whatever that technique is wherein the photos of the characters are used as sprites. That was such a silly idea.
@mlopinto2k1 Really? So today's technology should be used to make a photograph sprite? Do you have any idea how backward that would be?
so much fun :>
What's with the shadows? They couldn't properly light the recording room?
THAT WAS BLOOD!!!
3:10
I bet that somewhere that guy is a mugen character now
Ed Boon resembles Kaka from Real Madrid in this video, wait, also the reporter in the beginning.
@DenOfVipers I don't think it would be backward if it genuinely looked better than 3D models.
Did you know that the name Noob Saibot was gotten by reversing the surnames of the two creators of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon and John Tobias?
@xtrmst_012 Hmm, okay
I'm so glad motion-capture went away.
impressive

2:24 pretty sure that move was never in the game.... though it shoulda been lol
Boon looks like Sylar from Heroes
@SupRStanG And also why they killed Johnny cage in mk3.
This seems very unlikely, considering that they made digitized games all the way into the 32bit era. Also I found no evidence of this, you'd think something like that would be pretty big news.
I did however find that the director of one of the films sued Midway, claiming to own the rights to many of the characters.
They should have shown one of the ninjas In this what the heck 😔
Johnny Cages actor, Daniel Pesina did play the ninjas, he said it in the video.
Sonic Memer Scum I know that, i just wish they showed the Live-Action costume for Scorpion.
