The thing is, Sega of America knew how to do good marketing and were actually dethroning Nintendo, with good games to boot, but Sega of Japan and their envy-fueled directors just couldn't handle that the West was being better than them and put everything to lose with their close-mindedness. They still can do good games, though.
+John O I was going to say the exact same thing. I love how the kids spoke about their gaming experiences. Proud to have lived that. NES memories for life!
BlueRice It SHOULD be true. But most people nowadays buy games for graphics. If the game looks like crap, a lot of people won't buy it, even if it's good. Most companies do the same thing. make sure the graphics are good before making sure the actual game is good.
Given that this aired a week before Christmas, I'm sure they figured that a lot of parents were buying games for their kids as gifts. There are probably also some adults gifting games to other adults as well as adults buying games for themselves, but I have a feeling a majority of games that were bought around that time were going to kids as gifts.
That and people were probably remembering the crash of '82 - were parents really going to splash out c. $40 per game based on how well Atari had done with "ET"? I must admit, even UK parents were very reluctant to buy multiple games for one system (based on my own straw-poll research). In 1991, games cost around £30 and it was really cost-prohibitive to have a videogame habit that couldn't be fed by swapping carts with your friends.
Vieweracc99 Were you even alive in 1982? What crash of '82? They didn't even have any discounts or lack of games in 1982, 1983 was a consumer's dream with tons of games, and hardware in stores, but in 1984 the market was dead, I couldn't find any new games in stores, most had them in discount bins, so after school I used to rummage through them only to find Othello and other crap games no one wanted. It "crashed" in 1984 despite what you may read on "Wrongipedia", I know I EXPERIENCED IT!
Jude Law I'm talking about the fact that Atari rushed out ET, and the fallout afterwards (Remember the Alamagordo!) Thanks for thinking I'm younger than I am...how charming!
Kids these days....they don't know the horrors of the Great War of the 90s. Those of us who live through it we still wake up screaming....I still remember the battle of the Mortal Kombats 20,000 SNES and Genesis Gamers went over the top in only 10 SNES gamers and 5 Genesis Gamers returned...the pizza boxes, the wasted mt. dew, the broken catridges and melted consoles...the horror, the horror
+snakes3425 No, it was pretty simple. Sega released the Genesis in the US about two years before the SNES and it was apparent right from the start how much more advanced the Genesis was over the NES. I still think the Genesis beats the SNES for overall total great games, but SNES had their gems too. Super Mario Kart is the best 16 bit racing game, even better than MarioKart64. Mortal Kombat was better on Genesis, but MK2 was far superior on SNES. Phantasy Star II is superior to A Link to the Past(I know I'll get some flak for that one).
Always loved this video as it's quite wholesome, the kids talking why they love the games, the businessman showing what's in store for the future, and to make it better, the news reporter talking about it in a natural manner, without mockery or showing that she has no idea of what she's talking about Maybe she didn't, but still having a professional stance
'when I do get a new game it's fun to play it a lot, because you get to explore new places you've never been before'. Well said, 1990's kid, well said.
18 years later and Howard Phillips is still right. It's always been about the games. But I'm glad to see Tom Kalinske because without him, Sega never would have made it in America.
Phvrvoh Phonk PSX isn't the original Playstation. PSX only came out in Japan and it was basically a PS2 with a built in HDD. Search Gamester81 PSX on UA-cam.
Zarkiv PSX is the original Playstation. That was it's the industry used for Playstation for years before Sony released the PSX (which was a glorified PS2 and DVR) in Japan back in 2004. Go learn your video game facts, since you are obviously failing video games 101.
2:53 this guy fucking gets it, it has always been about THE GAMES! Even today, how much this remains true. I don't give a flying fuck if a PS4 or X1 can play movies, browse the internet, play football, wash my dishes and maw my lawn, if good games aren't there then I won't buy a system. Its funny how these companies seem to strive for other markets and audiences with each new console and yet they forget what it has always been about, the Gamers and their Games.
But Sony is concentrating on the games. They just gave us inFamous Second Son, MGS V Ground Zeroes is out, Mercenary Kings. Xbox 1 is more about the tv crap than anything else.
Jian Costa I'd like to show them Rouge the Bat so they could begin wondering which one of them will turn out to be the sicko who put a pair of breasts on a bat. XD
I don't know if I should get a Sega Genesis or wait for the Super Nintendo to arrive. :) *btw I can't believe I actually got to see Tom Kalinski and he looks focused, after reading Console Wars I have huge respect for the guy. Sega was a real fighter.
1990: The Genesis is 16-bit, is it the end of Nintendo? 1996: The Nintendo 64 uses cartridges, is it the end of Nintendo? 2001: The GameCube is too kiddy, is it the end of Nintendo? 2006: The Wii is too gimmicky, is it the end of Nintendo? 2013: The Wii U is barely selling at all, is it the end of Nintendo? Noticing a trend? Reply to me if you do.
To be fair, they _were_ just electronic toys. Especially back then before more narrative focused games became the norm; it was just something to play with, not something that had any deeper artistic value
@@ShaunDreclin tbh I think most modern narrative based games are really boring. I don’t feel like I’m playing a game half the time I feel like I’m watching a movie. I just want to enjoy the gameplay and then here comes a cutscene then another cutscene then another cutscene. I hate that, I much rather prefer the pick up and play style of retro games.
Well I started playing Video Games at the age of 3 in 1988, my parents had an Atari 2600. In 1990 I got my Nintendo Entertainment System for Christmas. Now I'm 28 years old, and i still play all my Nintendo games.
It's funny just how uptight Tom Kalinske is compared to the childlike behavior of Howard Phillips. Howie is even wearing a bow tie for crying out loud. XD
I remember my stepdad taking me to mall and made me wait in the car for an hour. I had no idea why. He comes strolling out with a clear GameBoy playing Tetris. I never wanted one or even knew what it was. He just wanted it for himself.
It's mind blowing to me to think that there are kids growing up today only knowing what the current generations of systems can do as video games and not experiencing the magic of the 16-bit era. Makes me feel old at 21...
How is that mind blowing? Do you not realize that not everyone is born during the same time period? Think about how many generations were born before you, now think about how many will be born after you. You just so happened to be born during a time period of retro games. That doesn’t make you special.
***** They only demolished the Master System by using illegal business practices which was bullying stores into not selling Master System, locking 3rd parties to contracts saying they can only make games for the NES. Yeah, real fair competition buddy. As for demolishing the competition, Sony would be the true victor. PS1 sold over 100 million consoles PS2 sold over 155 million consoles Sony did what Nintendo couldn't with their previous systems, the only reason why the Wii did so well was because of the gimmick because once that gimmick dried up so did Nintendo again.
@@LUCKO2022 ok I know this is a late comment but Nintendo didn't use Illigal practices and they had 3rd party companies sign contracts in order to avoid another market crash
I wish I was a Child for the 80s/90s. Being able to experience gaming back when you had to go to arcades to play your games would be so cool. Playing through the classics back when they were still new. Arcades also seem like such a fun environment/social space. Being able to experience the rise of consoles and home gaming would also be great, especially in an economy in which the video game market wasn't littered with copycats and killfests.
"First and foremost, it's games." I like how even 23 years later, they haven't changed their idealistic motto about putting fun before toting their hardware.
Yep, everyone who still remembers Nintendo and how great it was recalls the 90's as the time of its demise! Never would we see another Mario game (he does appear in Sonic Runners 8 but it's just not the same). Nowadays it's Sega this and Sega that - almost nobody even recollects poor Nintendo.
The 80s really started the video game craze. The 70s was treated as a fad. Parents were still in the same mindset that it was a toy. The 90s would change that with more adult stuff though.
my god as a french 01:23 I am totally amazed to hear the children from the 80s, how clearly they speak American English. I mean, as a French person, I can understand every word because they articulate so well, compared to today's kids where I don't understand at all what they're talking about. They eat up words, use slang that I have no explanation for, not even on the internet. It's incredible! Know that we have the same phenomenon in France with our language; we no longer understand today's youth as they mix Arabic, French, and African languages, unlike the children from the 80s who speak 100 times better
Sega fan 4 life here!! My whole family had Genesis, and 3 months ago I got Dream Cast with Crazy Taxi, controller and memory stick for 70 bucks. My brother is donating his old games to me, well except House of the Dead, he ain't parting with that game.
***** Sega wasn't hot in 1990, they didn't even get decent market share until Sonic debuted in 1991. In 1990, Nintendo cleaned house with Super Mario Brothers 3, Game Boy line and Nintendo Power all flying off shelves. The following year was a different story, Nintendo went from over 90% of the market in 1990 to about 50% of the market with Sega taking most of it.
I remember as a young teen going to the mall to kill a day's worth of potential boredom (the bowling alley and pool hall were not busy until night time). You had the top five singles to listen to before you buy at Camelot records, you had the food court, the arcade, and Christmas time always meant the Nintendo display set up at both Sears and Venture with Nintendos and the hottest games available. Of course the security guards ensured a strict time limit on play per kid. I bought an emulation station a year or two ago at Christmas for my family (for those few who may not know, it is a small computer about the size of a deck of cards that has tens of thousands of video games from gaming systems spanning the Gen x era (Commodore, Apple, Atari, Sega, Turbo Grafix, as well as popular arcade games from that tme era). My oldest was bored to tears, my other kids were mildly entertained. I was a six pack of Jolt cola, a greasy pizza, and a cassette tape of Appetite For Destruction from Christmas Break 1986. Watching this video was instant time warp. So simplistic compared to today. The things today's kids will never get to experience
I personally miss all the competition of the great console war of the 90s: snes vs genesis vs turbografx 16 vs Neo Geo vs atari jaguar vs panasonic 3DO vs Philips CD-i
Don't know why they added Michael Jackson to the opening roll that credits all of Nintendos power... Moonwalker was a Sega release. Regardless the game was a blast to play. #DancingZombieDogs 💃
I just finished Console Wars. It was a really interesting look into the early 90s and the battle between Sega and Nintendo and all the people behind the marketing and the game companies. Really interesting read and brought back a lot of memories and gave a lot of context to games I remember playing and pining over as a kid.
I like how Howard Philips described Nintendo's philosophy of it being about the games, not just hardware alone. I think Nintendo still sticks to that in today's modern console clash. Also,$100 for a Nintendo and $200 for a Genesis? Those were the days. Now a PS5 or series x breaks the bank at $500 a piece, never mind the cost of games. I like looking back at these old days of gaming, thanks for the video, well done.
Man to think this is over 30 years ago is wild. I wonder if any of these people knew just how insane it would become so fast. We'll be able to simulate physically being inside video games in the next 30 years at the rate we're going.
A very interesting news special about a game system that was about to come out soon after I was born, and that I ended up playing very frequently throughout my childhood.
Yet Nintendo were still doing fine for 100 years before they even got into the gaming industry and have never been on their last legs. 90's gaming journalists ¬_¬
@@XanderCrease Remember, when the say "Nintendo" they're actually talking about the NES, which was very much on its last legs in 1990. This was the time when "NES" and "Nintendo" were interchangeable
'Ninendo's on it's last legs!' ...Oddly enough, they're still around almost 30 years later making a mint along with new Hardware and Software. And Sega? Well...'Genesis Does...' games on Nintendo systems now lol
Sega had too much ego. Nintendo will be around for ever, they may not have the power to match Xbox and Playstation, but they offer entertainment, and will continue to do it for centuries to come.
@@josephkreifelsii6596 Very true, in addition to the fact that Nintendo was & still is 'in the black'/made a profit off of every system they've ever sold (with the possible exception of the Virtual Boy) and of course their more-often-than-not top-notch first-party software will ensure that they as a company will be around for a long time.
nah about 70 for console and two controllers w/ mario duck hunt. If you have one in the box in perfect condition you could maybe get 120 for it. Still too many around for them to be incredibly rare although they are becoming harder to find. I'm probably going to buy one I saw on craigslist for 85 and that comes w/system mario duck hunt and zelda
Whatever the numbers, the TG16 was a very capable system. I, personally, am a Nintendo fanboy, but I got a TG16 as they were going on clearance. It came with Keith Courage and Power golf. It was interesting and different, but ultimately it sat in a closet for a couple decades. Pulled it back out a few years ago and got some proper games, and it's really been a blast. I can see how it was a hit in Japan, especially considering the fact that they got a much bigger/better library of releases. Too bad TG16 prices are so sky high now.
ShmupShmupPewPew haha I came back to watch this video and saw your response. I actually got a turbo grafx 16 also. Only game I own for it is Keith courage lol
Tom Kalinske really knew his stuff. He's the reason the Sega Genesis succeeded in the US. Heck, this was his first year with Sega and he already set the standard high! Lowering the price of the console and picking Sonic The Hedgehog as the pack in title... God dang genius!
Tom is correct when he says better graphics Nintendo doesn’t think of better graphics Sega was the like the Xbox most powerful console every time Nintendo caught up sega would make another console step ahead of Nintendo 32 bit 32 x after Nintendo got their Super Nintendo caught up with 16 bit even the sega cd was amazing the games looked so real
While Nintendo has always prioritised gameplay over graphics, they raised the bar graphically with SNES, SuperFX, Donkey Kong Country, and then delayed the Nintendo 64 - skipping 32bit tech (let's ignore the Virtual Boy for now) and going straight to 64-bit. It wasn't until the Wii that they dropped out of the graphics arms race, and focused on novelties (motion controls with Wii, touch screens with DS, 3D displays with 3DS, tablet form factor with Wii U, and flexible Home Console or Portable forms with Switch).
ajmetz82 the Nintendo 64 wasn’t better the Dreamcast it never released any arcade games like marvel vs capcom it was all about Mario and Zelda games Nintendo doesn’t think of releasing arcade games to home consoles Sony and Sega and Xbox releases the arcades Nintendo was boring just like today which console isn’t giving achievements or trophies it’s Nintendo who should of ben doing it when the Wii was released in 2006 then no achievements on Wii U and still no achievements on Nintendo Switch plus Nintendo Switch is very weak it can’t play WWE 2k18 so they stopped making WW2k 19 and 20 Nintendo is boring Sega is way much better without sega there is no sonic Tom is a smart man he would of giving Sega consoles achievements the best graphics more powerful then Nintendo
@@Suhadisgood I never said it was better than the Dreamcast. N64 was released in the UK in 1997, and Dreamcast didn't arrive until 1999. N64 was 64-bit, Dreamcast was next generation 128-bit. N64 was in the PSOne/Saturn/N64 console wars. Dreamcast was in the Dreamcast/PS2/GameCube/Xbox era, although Sega killed it themselves just as PS2 launched, and before Gamecube or Xbox were even out, to become a software company and release for DC, PS2, GC and Xbox, etc.
My point was Nintendo used to be in the graphics race. True, they're not now. With the SNES and N64, they had the most powerful consoles with the best graphics, of their respective console generations. So they did used to lead in graphics too at one point.
I agree Sega was better at Arcade games. I bought a Saturn months after the N64 launch, because I found Nintendo's cartridges too expensive at retail and enjoyed the cheap yet excellent Saturn games going in shop bargain bins at the time. Following Saturn also got me hyped for the impending Dreamcast - and I got that too at launch.
Lol, guys. Nintendo has a lot of money in the bank, they are no where near in any financial problem. Sony as a whole company has problems only Playstation brand keeps them afloat.
Jessie Edsell Well when the Super Nintendo comes out next year Nintendo will gain more profits. I mean look at Japan. Also, Sony doesn't even have a system out yet.
Jessie Edsell Ah the new year! I can't wait to finally get my hands on a Super Mario world. I think Sony is going to do something with Nintendo soon though. That's gonna be badd ass!

I was here in 2020 wishing i could travel back 30 years. I so miss the 90's.
What that guy said about its all about the games and not the graphics gave me chills
its still true till today.
That guy obviously knew what he was talking about, I felt like he was a future-man.
BlueRice It SHOULD be true. But most people nowadays buy games for graphics. If the game looks like crap, a lot of people won't buy it, even if it's good. Most companies do the same thing. make sure the graphics are good before making sure the actual game is good.

i do agree. the topic is very subjective.
You'll never understand where we are or where we are going unless you understand where we came from.
That applies to pretty much everything.
"Will parents be willing to shell out the money.."
Dude just said that over 40% of the market was adults. That's nearly half the market. Oy.
Not all adult gamers are able to invest that much of money, even if they wanted.
Wow, what a war
blisters on your thumbs, these kids with their analog stick controllers. weak weak weak generation
im a survivor of the great pog war of the 90's many kids wound up fighting each other every lunch time till they got banned
There, there,i'm sure it wasn't THAT bad...
was it?
"This might be Nintendo's last Xmas..." Funny story about that...
Meanwhile, Reggie's body is getting ready.

Nintendo hasn't changed at all. And I'm glad they didn't!
+BlueBlur They did change though... they stepped away from third party support after the SNES. Which in turn, means far less games.
+Forever Negative Mainly this is over them not being a dictator or being able to be one anymore.
Their strength already was and always will be their unmatched first party IPs.
Always loved this video as it's quite wholesome, the kids talking why they love the games, the businessman showing what's in store for the future, and to make it better, the news reporter talking about it in a natural manner, without mockery or showing that she has no idea of what she's talking about
Maybe she didn't, but still having a professional stance
Finally found someone from the same year lol ! But still in the newest here but the oldest when it comes to video games oh yeah
A nintendo Game master? Why couldn't I have this as a job?

@Elephant why didn't you try?game tester or designer many jobs in games

18 years later and Howard Phillips is still right. It's always been about the games. But I'm glad to see Tom Kalinske because without him, Sega never would have made it in America.
While everyone fighting on Nintendo and Sega in 1990, im sure none of them never realize their worst nightmare is yet to come..... Playstation....
SNES > PSX & PS2
Phvrvoh Phonk PSX isn't the original Playstation. PSX only came out in Japan and it was basically a PS2 with a built in HDD. Search Gamester81 PSX on UA-cam.
Zarkiv Oh, I thought PSX was the original and then PSone was the mini white version that came out later.
Zarkiv psx was the internal/industry name for the original playstation, although sony later released the ps2/tv recording device branded "psx"
Zarkiv
PSX is the original Playstation. That was it's the industry used for Playstation for years before Sony released the PSX (which was a glorified PS2 and DVR) in Japan back in 2004.
Go learn your video game facts, since you are obviously failing video games 101.

No they still have jobs, at Burger King sweeping the floor.

Yep
Nintendo lost me during the Gamecube - Wii production runs because yes they were too kiddy and gimmicky. The Wii U has been a nice turnaround so far!
they never regained the 90% market share they once had, even Wii only managed about 60% at its peak, which is SNES level, not NES level dominance.
2017: The Switch is hard to buy. Is this the end of Nintendo?
Jude Law 90% was a high mark that no company will ever reproduce.
"it's all about the games" nintendo's mindset from day one
It's interesting that video games, were merely considered to be toys. They weren't prepared for what is out now.

"Sega's Genesis is Nintendo's nemesis."
So much better than doing what Nintendon't
It's mind blowing to me to think that there are kids growing up today only knowing what the current generations of systems can do as video games and not experiencing the magic of the 16-bit era. Makes me feel old at 21...
How is that mind blowing? Do you not realize that not everyone is born during the same time period? Think about how many generations were born before you, now think about how many will be born after you. You just so happened to be born during a time period of retro games. That doesn’t make you special.
Damn you, history! Always repeating yourself.
"Will it be its (Nintendo) last?" HAHAHAHA...that's rich!
*****
They only demolished the Master System by using illegal business practices which was bullying stores into not selling Master System, locking 3rd parties to contracts saying they can only make games for the NES. Yeah, real fair competition buddy.
As for demolishing the competition, Sony would be the true victor.
PS1 sold over 100 million consoles
PS2 sold over 155 million consoles
Sony did what Nintendo couldn't with their previous systems, the only reason why the Wii did so well was because of the gimmick because once that gimmick dried up so did Nintendo again.
@@LUCKO2022 ok I know this is a late comment but Nintendo didn't use Illigal practices and they had 3rd party companies sign contracts in order to avoid another market crash

@@thomasholzer8881 omg thats amazing, I love videos like this. It's like hopping into a time machine.
born in 92 and missed the experience of early Nintendo consoles. my first ever console was the ps4 and I had to pay for it myself. 😞
It was AWESOME 👊
"First and foremost, it's games."
I like how even 23 years later, they haven't changed their idealistic motto about putting fun before toting their hardware.

Killer app! :’D
thanks for sharing Grooveraider, The History of Sega with Ken Horowitz - The Retro Hour EP131 brought me here.
Watching this video today is a powerful lesson about the tremendous gap between hindsight and how things feel in the moment.
50 to 70 bux some of those games still cost that much just for the dam cartridge
I remember paying $70 for "Mortal Kombat II" back in 1994 on Genesis.
I love watching these news programs as an adult and seeing the adults not understand video games.
It was SUCH A COMPETITIVE TIME
Sega fan 4 life here!!
Back when parents where looking at video games as investments. Rofl
They forgot.. "And you could get fired if you don't stop playing on the job" ^^
Also, a nice shout-out to the Game Boy, which was THE big thing during the 1990 holiday season.
I personally miss all the competition of the great console war of the 90s: snes vs genesis vs turbografx 16 vs Neo Geo vs atari jaguar vs panasonic 3DO vs Philips CD-i
illuminatioracle or SNES vs the wannabes
do NOT mention the CD-I as a "games system"
Don't know why they added Michael Jackson to the opening roll that credits all of Nintendos power... Moonwalker was a Sega release. Regardless the game was a blast to play. #DancingZombieDogs 💃
Damn I miss these days!!
$200 from 1990 adjusted for inflation would be about $450 today.

Wii U didn’t suck dumbass Sega fanboy
Aladdin didn’t sell like hot cakes dumvass
